    I'd like to point out it's not the engine braking that causes you to spin out but the sudden change in speeds(between engine and wheels). If it was the engine brake like you mention, the car would still spin out after a heel and toe downshift.
    It's the inertia of the engine that causes a "shock" to be sent through to the wheels when you lift the clutch aggressively, all that heel and toe does is rev match so that there is no change in speed and therefore no inertia forces are transmitted.
    It's a bit like trying to get into 1st gear while driving, if you lift the clutch quickly, the wheels will slow down and lose traction, if release the clutch slowly there will be no loss of traction, and it will take a 'long' time for the engine to bring up the revs. All that happens is the energy of the car is used to accelerate the engine, however it feels like heavy braking because the engine has a lot of inertia and there is a gear disadvantage.
    In physics terms, Impulse (shock) = Force/time
    If the force is the difference between engine and gearbox(wheel) speeds (and their respective inertia), it is clear to see that in order to provide a rapid gear change without upsetting the balance, the speeds have to match
    Nonetheless, a good video explaining the technique. I just like to be picky

      Semantics. It’s not technically a brake but the fact that if you press two objects spinning at Different rates together means one will slow down and the other will try to speed up, says it acts as a brake. Missing too low on the revmatch will lock the rear wheels, if you miss in the other direction you over spin the clutch and it tries to spin the tires when the clutch grabs. The engine braking effect will stop your wheels, like the e-brake example, or accelerate them if the engine revolutions go to high. The compression of the engine working against the vacuum pull and gearing is what gives you “engine braking” by gear.

      Mine is even worse. I never touch a controller since the non-analog PS1 era so I'm not familiar with controller. I play on PC but I drive with keyboard better than with controller (only steering). Wired, right? Maybe my controller setting in Pcar is needed to be tweak?

      Vitor Francisco Lamounier I used to be a pleb too, well I still kind of am, but that's besides the point. I got a G29 (probably will upgrade in the near future) and I can't stand playing any racing game and not use a wheel.

    Epic lesson and great explanation. Just one more thing. On manual transmission, the heel toe downshifting permit you to do rev matching. When you downshift on the good rev, you don't have to care about the frictionnal point with the clutch and can engage the gear faster.

      ***** when you make a perfect heel toe downshifting with a good rev matching, there is no slipping on the clutch plate and you conserve the synchros of the gearbox. All good for the mechanical parts.

    "Speed Secrets" by Ross Bentley - "Step-by-step explanation of how to heel and toe:
    1. Begin braking using the ball of your right foot on the brake pedal while keeping a small portion of the right side of your foot covering the gas pedal - but not pushing it yet.
    2. Depress the clutch pedal with your left foot, while maintaining braking.
    3. Move the shift lever into the next-lower gear (eg. from fourth to third), while maintaining braking.
    4. While continuing braking and with the clutch pedal depressed, pivot or roll your right foot at the ankle, quickly pushing or "blipping" the throttle (revving the engine).
    5. Quickly ease out the clutch, while maintaining braking.
    6. Continue braking in lower gear."

    (4:15) I see. On sequential transmission cars, this is where Electronic Kicker comes in.
    In short, "No need to blip the gas while downshifting" refers to "no need to do heel-toe technique".

    Great video. I just like to point out that heel toe isn’t really like ABS in a technical sense since what heel toe is trying to achieve is to slow down the car and downshifting while releasing the clutch in the correct RPM to avoid engine braking. The former applies and releases the brakes rapidly to prevent the car from skidding. Both however prevent the car from locking the wheels so they both are the same in that aspect.

    While this is mostly true on many sequential car , some of the model of the 911 gt3 doesn"t have the autoblip (like the one represented in the flat6 mods for rf2) it's still sequential but you still have to heel&toe Excellent video and channel by the way ;)

      Comrade Hatuey heel-toe seem touge like? Well maybe but, it's more of (like in this video) a technique to downshift effectively.
      This technique have more importance in Rally than anything since there's a lots of consecutive hairpins hence a proper downshifting is needed.
      He may not mentioned drifting, but eurobeats are associated with drifting ffs.
      Unless you're trolling me right now...............

    Downshift without heel and toe provokes not only engine brake, but most importantly clutch brake. In this case the clutch will be the most important cause suddenly decreasing the driving wheels speed. Since while doing heel and toe you downshift, you are actually provoking a stronger engine break.

    now i know how to do it. thank you very much. so all you have to do first is brake, and then clutch (while at the same time downshift and blip throttle). i thought at first it's clutch while downshifting and brake+blip throttle.

    some car with sequential shifters. ie the ford falcon supercar. you should throttle down shift. and use the clutch if granny shifting. as its a square cut gears ( analogue sequential ) and not electronic paddle ( digital sequential ) that rev matches for you and you shound be able to miss match gears. as the onboard computer will not shift as the wrong rev range.

      thats if you have auto blip off. even with auto blip off. the some cars will still blip as its part of there engine management computer.

    Good that you pointed out "in racing games" because in real life you can feel that clutch and can catch the right point when the engine breaks, as a result you can use that point to assist in breaking and car won't spin. If you drop the clutch like you showed in the video then the car might spin. It is also possible to replicate in game but is very time unefficient and will make you actually slower.

    Actually, everything that has 3 pedals should use heel and toe, and that audi at 4:03 is semi-automatic, it doesn't have a clutch pedal. secuential manual is like every other manual gearbox, the difference is that you can't select random gears, it selects it in order (1-2-3-4-5-4-3-4-5-6-5-4-3-2-1 is an example), but you can shift a lot faster, like almost half seconds faster, more power and torque transmitted (straight cut gears). Keep going bud!

    Tap handbrake and use sparingly if you can't heel toe or put automatic on and drive like a rally driver (right foot brake)

    It took me a long to time to understand and execute the movement. Nowadays I can do it, but I still struggle to maintain the same braking level while kicking the gas. Everytime I go for the gas I press the brake a little more and, depending on the speed, lock the wheels.

    Sometimes i try heel-toe on the road, but as it's not needed cause you don't need to slow down fast i'm really really shy on the throttle cause i'm afraid i could push the brake too hard. I guess this technique becomes easier if you push the brake hard

    Well I wanted to learn the heel toe technique some time ago and this video appeared. And guess what I wanted to heel-toe (and do some other racing tehniques) in the C9 Sauber, guess what there's one in this video. Now I need to wait for a g920 to appear with a shifter.

    But you can disable the throttle blip from the settings if you have sequential

      Windows98 that’s for manual only, sequential will still blip the throttle, because that’s how it works on real cars (I know it sounds stupid). Sequentials are made to quicken up gear shifting, and blipping it yourself would slow it down, so there’s no sense in doing so.

    i had already figured out this by myself when i started racing on pcars and here i just see how i was right XD thx anyways. i sometimes use the downshifting without heel toe on tight corners so it helps to corner faster in tracks like california highway where rhere are 40km h corners

    I always put to much pressure on my break during the rotation and increase my chances of locking the breaks during heel toe, I think I need a pedal with a larger break travel.

    what you sad for sequential transmission only apply on commercial shifter like DSG in this chase if you have dog box and sequential shifter without electronics you still need to use heel and toe

    Actually, braking for a corner can be done way easier. (Wheel users only+pedal and clutch/manual)
    First you ofcourse brake, then when you brake: Give around 10% throttle, release and downshift, continue giving throttle a bit and it shouldn't lock :D
    I recommend it on cars with higher horsepower like the Zonda R, but i guess it will also work on an Abarth :)

    Oh... so it's called engine break... I figured through playing forza that the car will slow down faster if you shift downward as rpms decrease. But, I never knew why. I just knew worked... Learn something new everyday.

      Ahh so that's heel toe. The thing with controllers is you can just map the clutch to another shoulder, and boom. However, for the cars that have manual or sequential transmission in game, do they still behave the way shown in this video, or does it depend on the game?

    right so i got another question. i've seen some videos where people with sequential shifting still blip the throttle while downshifting in like open wheel cars. is that because the car probably doesnt blip for you or is it redundant of them to do so. they were using left foot on the brake and right foot blipping.

    One thing you didn't touch on there was the value in rev matching, which is the more important fundamental basis for heel toe, and becomes more important when you downshift without using the brake and need to rev match before rolling into the lower gear. Also, your heel toe is far too slow, considering the throttle response of your car is ridiculously quick.
    Apart from that, still a good video.

      Yes, it's useful in real life, but only on sporty driving. On city it's completely useless (and maybe even dangerous too).

      While heel-toe braking may not by useful in normal driving (you usually don't break agressively in city), engine braking allows you to save fuel and put less wear on actual brakes. Rev matching on downshifts also makes the ride much smoother.
      Why do you think it's dangerous to heel-toe in city?

      I actually prefer wear on break pads than on the clutch (friction discs)

      i rev match it in my diesel crv though the engine takes some time to rev up cuz its so unresponsive but the transition between gears especially from 3rd to 2nd is pretty smooth cuz the my car has very wide spread gears (1..2.....3..4.5.6)

    thanks for the tutorial. One question tho. at the moment where u bleep the throttle and downshifting, which one goes first? do you downshift first then bleep the throttle, vice versa, or do both at the same time? Professional race car drivers do it so fast that it kinda looks like they're doing it at the same time but I just wanna make sure. thanks in advance

    LoL,I am used doin trottle and brake with left foot...so the right foot is always in Control of power.

    Do i have to press and release clutch for every downshift or i can hit the brake pedal, press clutch, downshifting while hitting the gas pedal, downshifting again while using a bit of gas to raise RPMs and then release the clutch and the brake?

    what if you use the pedal shift from your wheel, but the car you're driving is old model with regular shifter. Do you need to bleep the throtle?

    Haha, i'll be home in a few days and then i can go ahead an use my new pedals and off course learn heel and to, the timing couldn't be better, thx xD

    Hey Viper. I was watching your video on heel and toe, though I could never understand how to be smooth in pedal controls. In general, I mean having steady brake pressure and blipping the throttle just enough to bring the revs up perfectly. I've tried a few different techniques, foot positions, and practiced them. However, it seems that I blip the throttle too much or too little, or my brake pressure is unstable when blipping the throttle, making the car quite unsettling when entering a corner.
    Am I doing something wrong? Or do I just need way more practice than I think?
    I'd like your tips and advice on being smoother with downshifting.
    I have a G29 with the H-Shifter and play on Assetto Corsa and GT Sport.

    informative viedo. but one complaint. when you did the downshift and the car spun, you didnt brake at the same time. but when heal/toe shifting you did, so the brakes were helping you. i would have liked to see another run where you bliped the throtle only (no brakes) while down shifting.

      The point of that without braking is to show what happens when you improperly downshift like a fucking pleb 90% of drivers out there do. You know that chug you feel when someone is slowing down and downshifting? Like something bumped the car when shifting into previous gear? Yeah that's drivers being plebs and just downshifting without throttle blip.

      Dagzilla brofist exactly. In real life car you break and downshift and there is no need for heel and toe. Althogh, without heel and toe you lose time. However, do heel and toe on your street car and your clutch will be gone in very short time.

    So, note 1: In FWD cars, the engine's brake will help me branking the car for the corner;
    note 2: In RWD cars I can use the heel and toe technique or I can downshift without releasing the cluch.
    Is that correct, @viperconcept?

    is it ok to accidentally left off like half of the brake pressure while blipping the throttle for a split second? if not, how to fix this?

    I didn't understand a thing. If you remove your foot from clutch rapidly car stops in a real car but why doesn't anything happen in sim racing when you remove your foot from the clutch rapidly?

    3:57 About that question, in Live For Speed when you downshift with a sequential transmission, the car doesn’t auto heel-toe. So in that game even with a sequential car you have to do the heel-toe technique, for me is a good point of the game :3

    So doesn't matter if i use h shift with heel-toe or sequencial shift is the same efficiency?
