  • I'll be fighting in the HEMA Icebreaker tournament later this month, and I'd quite like to see if I can protect my head a bit better. Not with better swordfighting, of course, but with better armor ;)
    I'll need to do some more work on this addition, like poking more holes in the visor so I can see easier and adding locking mechanisms, better throat protection, etc. But don't worry, none of these will compromise the historical accuracy.

    Looks great !
    Perhaps make a follow up Video with some Sparring where you can give a final opinion on the helmet.

      Thank you! I was able to spar a little in it last weekend, and I know one of the guys recorded some video of it, so I'll see if I can get those from him. And then I'll do the same once it's finished as well, of course.

    ....7:45 and there i was, starting off my first armouring project....a freaking miten gauntlets....ended up looking like most horribile monster you can ever imagane, more likely gona hurt the wearer then the attacker, but they worked....with constant repair obviously....but still, taking on quite chalanging thing to make is veeery much worth it

    I'd really like to do a bascinet, but there's no way I can get access to a welder in the near future. And I don't think I've already got the skills to raise it from one piece

    • @LivingManuscript
      @LivingManuscript  6 років тому +2

      Would you consider using a riveted construction? Depending on the status of who you're trying to portray - if that is the goal - you could probably get away with riveting three pieces together like this one: ua-cam.com/video/-Ecx9LgB2zo/v-deo.html
      As long as you can shape the metal then you should be able to pull that off without many tools.

      Living Manuscript I've already done riveted constructions, just not a bascinet. I'll probably go the raising route for now, starting with simpler and smaller pieces, like elbow cuffs

      Sounds like you've got a pretty solid plan then, good luck!

    Looking good! I bet visibility is pretty much perfect in that isn't it?

      Thank you! There are definitely more degrees of vision in this, though I still think I'll put even more holes into it where I can get away with that.

    Great job however please finish planishing grinding sanding and buffing the helm

      Thanks, you're absolutely right. In fact, since this video, I've learned a lot more about making the surface finish better. I was even able to make my best polish yet on a sallet I'm making for someone.

      I did, thank you! I usually wear it with my great helm, but that doesn't see a lot of use unfortunately.

    they allow medieval helmets in your tournaments?

    • @LivingManuscript
      @LivingManuscript  6 років тому

      The Icebreaker folks will need to approve it, but my current instructor seemed to think it would pass once I make a few little changes.

      hm in Europe as far as I know steel armour is almost always prohibited

    • @LivingManuscript
      @LivingManuscript  6 років тому

      Hmm, that's interesting, I know that at least in my club here in Wisconsin there are several of us that are developing steel helmets specialized for HEMA. An I already wear a reasonable amount of steel armor that I also use for my reenactment stuff.

    • @Gloin79
      @Gloin79 6 років тому

      well it's mainly like steel gauntlets only things like melmets are allowed

    • @LivingManuscript
      @LivingManuscript  6 років тому

      Ahh I see, plenty of melmets around here haha. I've been using the steel Wisby gauntlets I made so far, but I think you're onto something with that since I think I'll be getting a pair of Spez heavies.

    HEMA would be a much safer sport, if they allowed people to wear a Sallet and Bevor, with a riveted chainmail arming cap, that covers the nose and mouth. A HEMA fencing face mask sucks and will dent overtime, and so does a gorget. Neither protects your chin, neck, throat or cheeks.
