Such bold designs! And I’m so glad you show the finished mugs. It’s a huge disappointment when one watches a work of art being created but the finished piece isn’t shown.
The purple flower cups with a black background are beautiful; very folklore style and the classic blue cups with the *Mist* are just beautiful! I miss the sound of the seagulls in the background but if you have snow in the area we just have to wait for it. In FRA it's European sun, rain, cool weather and back to the start. My blocking is still, the free lines without messing up the cup and having the freedom to let the brush do its job. This is the difference between professionals and non-professionals! Thanks for sharing.
Love that sink! Love the Nova Scotia mist mugs too - very cool technique 👍. But, the star of the video is your new design. You've got me thinking about another way I can decorate mugs, vases, ETC!!!! Thank you!!!
Those are beautiful! I’m a beginner and have a couple of bits to glaze and I want to do an underglaze on them. You have given me a lot of inspiration! Thank you!😊
Hi Vaughn, thanks for sharing your work with us! I just wondered how these mugs became black in the areas that were not painted before. I‘m asking because I have a pottery project where I didn‘t order enough white underglaze to paint a base colour so I thought maybe I can do something with black 🧐
Hello. These are lovely. I'm new to this, so I have a question. You applied the slip and undergraze on leather hard body, then you bisque fired? and then applied transparent graze and glaze fired? Or do you just did one firing?
Vaughn, I’m wondering if you can talk about using stilts. I see you use them all the time. My question is do you use them when firing plates, tiles or wide flattish bowls? If so, how do you prevent the plates etc from slumping around the stilts? Do you just use bigger, wider stilts? Or do you use 3 or 4 underneath wide pots? Thanks. I enjoyed watching your method of spontaneously drawn leaves and flowers. The black background with the bright foliage is stunning.
The quick answer is all of the above. I do not fire flatware on stilts. The wider the foot the wider the stilt. I hate the multi pin stilts, too much grinding.
You are so incredibly skilled in sooo many things. It just amazes me!! All of your pieces are so beautiful! I LOVE the sink!!!! May I ask what kind of schooling you had for clay?
Just High School pottery for two years. Then studied Fine Art at college for 5 years. After college I got a teaching position at a high school in Kent, UK, for 5 years . I moved to the States and set up a pottery in Ohio in 1985. It was an unusual track.
You forgot to show us what color you used for the yellow 😊. Very pretty. When you say I fired to cone four do you mean 04 or 4? I’m new to all this just learning.
Cones are confusing because they go 06,05,04 etc getting higher in temperature and then 4,5,6, etc. still going up in temperature. I fire the flower pieces to cone 4.
Is the only reason you fired your B-mix at a 4 because it saves you power? I'm assuming the reason you can get way with that is because your using underglaze with a clear top? Whereas other color glazes you wouldn't hit there potential at the lower temperature?
If you put slips over underglazes you will get flaking, that is why I start with slips for the stencilling and paint underglazes over top. You also have to put the slips over soft clay.
Hello i look your great vidéo from France. You give the receipe of black sleep it's hard to translate for me; have you write this receipe Somewhere please ? I love your création and your video. Thanks
That was such a fun lesson. It is so inspiring. I love the kiln opening, everything in it.
Got a Bob Ross vibe from this video. I love the flowers! They look beautiful on the black background. Thanks for sharing!

I lime the addition of the stem...gives a depth to the decoration. Lovely!
Those black mugs with the flowers are very elegant looking

Practice makes perfect and the right brush makes a huge difference. The consistency of the underglaze also makes a big difference. Good luck.
The sink...so beautiful!😍
this video is mesmerizing...cant stop watching every brush stroke! ESPECIALLY THE YELLOW!!! awesome Thank You
You are welcome.
Love that sink! Love the Nova Scotia mist mugs too - very cool technique 👍.

The mug is thrown in white B-mix5, then sprayed with black slip, then hand painted with underglaze.
Beautiful ❤
Thanks
Amazing. Thank you.
love the flower mugs. Why do fire to Cone 4 instead of Cone 5?
I get better colour from the lower firing.
Hello. These are lovely. I'm new to this, so I have a question. You applied the slip and undergraze on leather hard body, then you bisque fired? and then applied transparent graze and glaze fired? Or do you just did one firing?
You got it right, slip is on just shy of leather hard clay.
@@Vsmithpots But than is still the question is it al in one firing. I like to hear from you. Like your videos, learn a lot. Greetings from Holland
@@lizbrouwer6347 The pieces are bisque fired and then glaze fired. Two firings.
How do you make the three armed kiln stands? What metal is used for the stand-offs on each arm?

Beautiful! I’m loving the underglaze process. Did I miss what cone you fire your clear?
cone 4.
Beautiful! May I ask0 how many coats of Amaco snow? To what cone did you glaze fire? Thanks!
I do not use Amaco snow.
incrível como o pincel desiliza a mãe uma leveza, 🇧🇷!!!! Assistindo o vídeo, Brazil
I like the black background. Is that underglaze or glaze?
Slip with Mason stain 6600 at 10%
Beauty full! Did you go lighter to darker green shades or the other way dark to light thank you
I start dark and go lighter. I like to over lay the dark with lighter washes.

I love your designs. The black slip recipe you mentioned, does it have a mason stain in it to make it black? If so how much is added?
Mason stain 6600 10%.
Hey Vaughn! Very nice. On the Nova Scotia Mist pieces do you use the technique shown in your stencil and masking vid ?
Yes.
Is the only reason you fired your B-mix at a 4 because it saves you power? I'm assuming the reason you can get way with that is because your using underglaze with a clear top? Whereas other color glazes you wouldn't hit there potential at the lower temperature?
I use a slip that only goes up to Cone 4, as does the glaze.
with all those layers of underglaze did / do you ever have issues with buckling, bubbling, or flaking off?
If you put slips over underglazes you will get flaking, that is why I start with slips for the stencilling and paint underglazes over top. You also have to put the slips over soft clay.
I love the dark slip as a background. Do you find you need to do inside and outside separately, or just dip the whole mug at once?
I spray the slip on.
My ancestors came to Nova Scotia.
Как красиво!
Спасибо 🙏💕
Спасибо и берегите себя там. Мир .
❤❤❤❤
Muito lindo !!!!
Do you ever make your own underglazes? :)
I looked into it but you need a ball mill to do it.
Yes I’ve heard that. Thank you for your response.
