      It's a bit like painting watercolours, where you use an excess of watery pigment to give a certain hue of colour, by leaving it fairly wet to dry or using the brush to suck up the the liquid, and in pottery, the baking in a kiln will change the colours she was using into (in this case from grey to blue).

      What Oscar Wilde meant by that saying originally, was attached to the status of owning such china like this, it was less about the quality of the work and more about the sheer wealth it cost, to commission a full dinner service and then have it sent by boat across the world without it breaking. (Although the work she’s doing there is stunning!)

    • @vinm300
      @vinm300 4 роки тому +18

      @@isoldehammond23 , how on earth did you form such a wrong-headed opinion ?
      Wilde was an aesthete : it was the sheer quality not the "sheer wealth" which impressed itself on Oscar.
      Wilde was famous for criticising wealthy people who possessed art without appreciating it , and would have felt far greater affiliation towards someone who cherished a meagre sample of blue-china, than with some toff who lazily owned a dozen tea-sets.

    Japanese pottery is absolutely amazing!
    From the beginning of throwing a plate, bowl or whatever item it may be, the finished product will be not only perfect but will be a lasting beauty for many generations.
    I would love to travel to Japan to meet some of the master artist from pottery to woodworking and everything in between. The knowledge they have of their craft that they are passing down to selected individuals is absolutely priceless and would be lost if those of the younger generations wouldn’t commit to the task at hand. It takes many years to become a master and they themselves will tell you that they are still learning their craft as well as the new students.
    The pottery ware shown here is absolutely beautiful!!
