    Lisa…you will get plenty more subscribers because you are lovely to listen to and your work is thoughtful and instructions are clear! I enjoyed this and I like your work. I too collect random images of patterns and shapes which I record on my phone. I still have an old colour printer and I print them out and paste them into an ‘inspirations book’ so they are all gathered together. 🙂

      Oh okay. Then most likely, the layer of pigment you applied the next color to, was too dry. It's best to work on leather hard clay for that process, I believe. I've had that happen when using pigments.

    Beautiful work and enjoyable easy to understand demo. Thanks so much for sharing! I just wanted to mention though, please either wet-dry sand paper under running water or wear a respirator. That dust can really make you sick and permanently damage lungs if you breathe it in. Exacto knives & needles do well to remove clumps of underglazes.
    Larger pieces need to be thicker. You probably know that.

    • @WildAcornsArtStudio
      @WildAcornsArtStudio  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for subscribing!!! Yes, I like when pieces are a little thicker. I'm clumsy. I always see other potters make these really thin bowls, and I always think to myself, "I'd break that in a day." 😀 I think a needle might take too much glaze off, but yeah, maybe an exact knife could just razor it off. I hardly ever use it. Thanks for watching!!

      @WildAcornsArtStudio  3 роки тому +1

      Hi. Make sure you're not watering down the underglazes too much, because they tend to burn out at higher temperatures in the kiln. I think that's what happened with the red underglaze I painted on the flower mugs. Underglazes are meant for low fire, but can be used at all temps, but they do tend to change colors if they're not thick enough. I try not to water them down as much. Greens tens burn brown, and so do reds. It's all about testing, and trial and error. Also, make sure not to use a clear glaze that has zinc in it. Zinc can also alter the underglaze colors. I fire to cone 5, and that seems to work fairly well.

      Yes, I showed them in the video of the kiln opening. The kiln opening date would be approximately 2 weeks after the painting video. But with underglazes, the mugs turned out exactly how they were painted, except some of the red burned out a little. I have 14k members??? I thought it was 1400. Wow, I'm going to have to check! 😀 😃 🙂 🙃 Thanks for watching!

      Hello! No worries, I don't mind answering questions! 😀 Yes, you can definitely apply the underglaze to greenware, whether it's dry or leather hard. After the bisque fire, then you can apply a zinc-free clear glaze. Underglaze can be applied to the bottom surface, but regular glaze cannot, unless you plan on stilting the piece. I bisque fire to cone 04 and glaze fire to cone 5. Good luck! 😀

      @WildAcornsArtStudio  2 роки тому

      @@tinepeeters1854 So it sounds like you are using low-fire clay? (Cone 08 is fired much lower than cone 5.) Just make sure that the clear glaze is designed to fire at the same temperature as the clay you're using. Underglazes have a wide range of firing temps, so they'll be fine. Google "Ceramic Cone Firing Chart." It will help you understand the range and temperatures of the cones you're firing to. It's easier to look at a chart than have me explain it. 😀 It's kind of weird how the numbers relate to temperatures. 😀

      Hello and thank you! 😊 Most of my paint brushes are from Hobby Lobby or Michael's, except for the Mayco Fluffy Fan Brush #8. I buy mine from my local clay supplier. But most clay suppliers carry them. It is the best for applying clear glaze or any brushing glaze to a bisqued surface. (Make sure to get the fluffy one.) It holds a lot of glaze, which makes it easier to get an even coat.

    Lisa, I am watching this one again but have a question. For some reason I was thinking you first put 2 or 3 coats of white underglaze on the piece first, and also inside. But It looks like you are painting the color underglaze directly onto the bisque. And no white underglaze inside, just the blue “water” bottom painting and both inside and outside finished off with 2 coats of clear. I am working on a piece today which I take to get fired tomorrow so I am wondering whether to put base coats of white or just jump right in with the color. I’m using the underglaze in overlapping watercolor type layers. ALSO… I was going to ask what kind of kiln(s) you use, and if they are digital or the older kind, and was it hard learning to use a kiln? Thank you : ).

    • @WildAcornsArtStudio
      @WildAcornsArtStudio  2 роки тому +1

      You are correct, I am applying the underglaze directly to the white clay. (B-Mix 5 w/grog) I only apply a white slip first if I'm applying it to dark clay. (I dip the leather hard greenware piece in white stoneware slip.) Good luck!
      I have an older Skutt kiln with a digital controller. They are fairly easy to use. The hardest part is getting it hooked up to your electrical panel. They take a lot of power, and can cause fires if not hooked up properly. I would suggest starting out with a smaller kiln that doesn't need a special electrical hook-up, and with a digital controller. My kiln is so large that it takes a lot to fill it, which slows down the firing process, which is why it's hard for me to show my pieces fired at the same time I am filming making them. So I wish I had a smaller one. They aren't very expensive to run. Maybe $15 to $20 per firing.

      @@WildAcornsArtStudio Thank you so much for your help with my underglaze question. : ) Re. kilns... I've only been working in ceramics for about 1.5 years now, thru a local adult ed class (for which I am very grateful!!). But I did acquire a Cress kiln from a friend a while back. According to the serial number it is about 50 yrs old, so I have been afraid to even try it once! The plug looked very unusual so my retired electrician friend came and put a different plug on there that will fit my electric dryer plug, but ... now I don't trust that plug and have never turned it on and am about to get rid of it. I have fantasies about getting an L&L but am not rushing into that purchase. Thank you for sharing with me your thoughts about a smaller kiln. I noticed they make those "doll kilns" too... for doll makers. I haven't really considered those but now that you said that about having a smaller one, it might be something to check out.

    • @WildAcornsArtStudio
      @WildAcornsArtStudio  2 роки тому +1

      @@ckunitysd8592 I would be very hesitant to use the Cress kiln if the plug was changed to fit the socket. Not all electricians are aware of the type of draw a kiln is on the electric panel. I've heard of wires melting at the socket. Is the electrical sure the outlet will handle the heat from the kiln? If so, you could do a test run, with you or someone checking on the wires every 30 minutes to make the socket and the wires are not getting overheated. Cress makes a good kiln, and I wouldn't worry about the age, if it's in good shape. Are the elements all tucked into place, or are they slumped to the side, like dominos collapsing? Do they have a whitish corrosion on them? Those are signs of old elements. Make sure you set witness cones on each shelf when firing a kiln, so you know what temperature/cone it's reaching. What cone is the clay that you plan on firing? I'm not sure doll kilns get to cone 5 or higher. Be sure to check on that. Make sure your kiln is not within 18" of anything that will melt or catch fire! :-)
