    "What are some signs you're conventionally ugly?"
    I had never been hit on, flirted with, or cat-called until 2020 when masks were required basically everywhere. Apparently I have really pretty eyes that are "ruined" by the lower half of my face lol.
    But seriously, this is a very loaded question since people are inundated with beautiful faces online, many of which are highly deceptive due to makeup and editing (including men). I'm positive that I'm just very average looking and had zero confidence before. Once I got out of the school environment and felt safer to experiment with how I express myself, I started dressing nicer, spoke a lot more, and gained a lot more confidence in a short span of time. At the time, I had assumed the change in others' attitudes was because of the mask, but as the mandates were slowly lifted, the occasional flirting still happened.
    Be kind to yourself, and people will notice your genuine demeanor.

      Wow, I could have written this comment! Everything about me is extremely ugly except that I have nice eyes (not according to me, but others). I love wearing a mask to cover up the lower half, it allows me to pretend i'm like a 4 instead of a 1. Do you have green eyes by chance? I have green eyes and I've wondered at times if it's not even something about my eyes themselves, and just that green ones are less common than brown or blue.

    • @chibibble
      @chibibble 4 місяці тому +21

      @@jijitters I actually have hazel eyes! Specifically, I have a center ring of golden brown, middle ring of bright green, and an outer ring of dark green/blue. They’re pretty unique, and I like them!
      But I wouldn’t write yourself off so easily. I don’t need to look at you to know that you’re selling yourself short. And besides, being interesting and kind are far more important than any beauty standard, since you have to live with those the rest of your life, unlike beauty which fades.
      So instead of being pretty, be interesting. Learn knew skills, go out and experience things, find new hobbies, and try to think in ways other people don’t attempt to. People will pick up on it when they talk to you want to know more.

      @@jijitters Hey, I know it's been 3 months and you probably won't see this but I'll be real with you. If your pfp is your face, you are FAR from a 1, and I mean it. You look like the kind of person I'd talk to just to be funny around because I'd be compelled to see your smile when you laugh. Body dysmorphia is a nightmare, especially in a world where the standards of attractiveness are constantly rising higher and higher due to the rise of photo editing, plastic surgery, unhealthy/extreme weight loss and professional makeup/lighting being the standard for much of what we see online. We're fundamentally social animals with the genetically ingrained desire to compare ourselves to every single other person we see. Human beings were never designed to live in a world where we're socially competing with literally billions of people to be at the top of the top of the top of the top of the ever narrowing pyramid of perfection. Your life is hard and your self perception is negative and considering your context that's totally normal, just know that the world you're being sold where you're never enough is a world sold by no more than corporations and idiots. While a lot of people subscribe to that world, there are (even if they're admittedly hard to find) kind people out there who aren't trashbags who won't expect you to achieve the impossible. That's all, you deserve better, even if the world hasn't given you it.

    I got on the elevator at work & there was an attractive woman inside who asked me “which floor?” to which I instinctively said, “4” & with almost no hesitation & the conviction of a Baptist preacher, she replied, “yeah, you look like you’re about a 4” & I just kind of stood there wide eyed, desperately hoping she was only going to the 2nd floor.
    I am happily married so I’m not looking to impress anybody but I have to admit it was pretty devastation to my self-esteem. I expected that behavior in high school but I’m in my 40’s now, so to hear someone be so blunt was jarring.

    Side note to maybe help cheer up this topic: I read a study once that concluded that the biggest factors in overall attractiveness wasn't genetic, but stuff like a good haircut, physique and a positive attitude, basically the stuff you can control help your attractiveness more than stuff out of your control.

    Ooof the last question. Being an ugly WOMAN in particular adds a weird element. So many women talk about men and dating and going out like they are always in danger, they talk about the ways they're hit on, or how they feel about cat-calling. These things are always talked about as the Female Experience or whatever. But not only do men see me as a blob instead of a woman, I can't relate to women at all when they talk about their experience as a woman because of this. I've never felt unsafe walking down the street because no one would ever want to look at or touch me. Never been hit on, never been flirted with, never been cat-called, never been someone's crush. It's alienating as hell not only from people in general, but from my gender.

It feels like being denied access to womanhood in a way. And then we get called lucky to now have those experiences but you know what else doesn't happen to me? The other nice things that happen to attractive people. It's very clear I'm on my own in life you know?

      When I was thin I remember thinking that the world was scary, and as a larger woman now I feel pretty safe. It's bizarre! Although I don't think I was ever very attractive, at least I had the body of an attractive woman. Without that it takes a lot more patience, care and love to move through this world that both glorifies and demonizes the experiences of only conventionally attractive women.

      Omg this. I've NEVER been cat called or hit on or any of those things that woman claim make them feel unsafe. It's to the point to where I would actually feel flattered if I was even if I know its not a good thing. I've gained a lot of weight in the past few years but even when I was actually a pretty healthy size I was still never noticed. I've straight up walked down a New York street at night and didn't feel unsafe in the slightest. Everyone would call me lucky but I feel like less of a woman.

    Attraction bias is a thing, it’s just like racism. As humans we naturally find comfort with those we find easier to look at, so we unconsciously create biases towards those we think look better, and it’s especially easy if the majority of people you spend time with, whether their personalities are good or bad, are conventionally attractive. That’s the main reason why twist villains were such a cool phenomena back when they weren’t everywhere, because it was easier to be more comfortable around someone who looks nice only for them to reveal they’re evil and break the convention.

    • @botanicalitus4194
      @botanicalitus4194 4 місяці тому +60

    • @irishjournalgaming
      @irishjournalgaming 4 місяці тому +13

      This can also slide into other biases as well. For example, if you knew someone who was considered attractive but you really didn't like, you'll gain a bias against attractive people. The human brain likes to find patterns, so if it sees similarities between people, we might assume they also share other traits. Personally, I has a bias against middle aged women, because I have known so many (like my mother and teachers) who treated me bad. That type of bias comes from the instinctive parts of our brains to protect us. Obviously, it's not an excuse, and biases can be overcome. I knew a lot of girls, especially lesbians, who were really bitchy, and I used to have a biases against them. But now I have friends you are lesbians, and am even dating a girl myself! (I'm bigender, so I identify as a girl and a boy) Biases suck, and can really affect our ability to make good friends. Notice when you have a bias against someone, and try to put that aside. Focus on what you know for sure about them and their personality.

  • @KooblyK
    @KooblyK 4 місяці тому +11

    I think with the attractiveness thing, there's also a factor of self-fulfilling prophecy at work, at least to some degree. If people FEEL ugly and are super aware of that all the time, they're not going to be as confident. They're not going to be as empathetic and charitable, because that's a hard space to stay in when you're feeling judged and caught up in yourself. And then it just highlights whatever you've got going on physically and becomes a vicious cycle.
    There are plenty of people out there that are in no way conventionally attractive, but they're just so confident and magnetic and not thinking about it, that it doesn't really matter. People are just drawn to them. Look at Brennan Lee Mulligan. He's never going to get scouted to be a model, but he's got people drooling over him all over the internet. Because when you look at him, you see HIM and how wonderful he is over everything else, and that makes him beautiful.
    Is pretty privilege a thing? Yes of course, but not to the insurmountable degree people often assume, and it comes with its own host of crippling insecurities and disconnection from others. It's all about attitude and perspective. Are we being kind to others because we want to see them smile? Or is it because we feel we have no choice because they won't accept us otherwise? People can pick up on which it is, subconsciously. And no one finds people pleasing attractive except users.

    I'm demi-sexual (on the ace spectrum) and TBH, I think it was a benefit when it came to choosing a partner. My brain does not turn to soup when I see an aesthetically pleasing person. I don't experience *any* attaction to a person unless I already have an emotional connection with that person. My husband and I were friends for a couple of years before we started dating. If I hadn't already connected with his personality, I wouldn't have agreed to date him, even though he is objectively, a hottie.

      I'm also demisexual and sapiosexual, which is a major plus because authentic organic connections can be formed long before most people consider physical attractiveness, which for me is extremely complex on its own and has a lot to do with the heart of an individual first. I truly value visual beauty as its own thing, kind of like art, but I do not attribute it to more subtle important characteristics typically.

      Aaaah it makes me sad when ace people talk like this, like they're some advanced form of the species and non-asexuals are primitive. The average non-ace person's brain does not "turn to soup" when they see a beautiful person. We are just normal. The men who consistently go "eh I don't really like her but she's hot" are driven by misogyny, it's not because they're not asexual.

Misdirection is the biggest key tool in those moments so you don't get stuck in depressive or panicked moods as much. It's a lot harder than it sounds, but once I started to notice I was getting down then naturally seeking out something like colouring or journalling or playing a game, I started to notice that I was having less depression and anxiety overall ^-^ Not being on phone as much was also a big help with those anxiety and depressive moods

It's true that back in the 20s-40s there wasn't sound in cinema, but movies have evolved so much since then to the point were having good dialogue and good music and good sounds in general is very important. There are movies which don't look great, but their dialogue and sound is incredible, which in my opinion can make up for whatever's wrong visually.

    if you are a hypochondriac, cycles don't last forever. i heavily suggest telling someone whenever you start to get nervous or anxious about health. Writing anxious thoughts in a journal also works. Once you get those thoughts out of your head and into the world, it helps you see how you were extremely overthinking

People who are overweight are also less likely to get a job (if there is a qualified skinnier person), and they tend to be offered a lower starting salary. It sucks. I've been told by basically everyone all my life I'm ugly af and I agree I certainly ain't easy on the eyes. People are generally meaner and young people are especially cruel about it and generally act like they have special permission to abuse ya if you don't look conventionally attractive and people are far less likely to intervene. But I have learned a good few of them are projecting their own insecurities onto me so when I happily agree that I am in fact hella ugly they pretty quickly turn their tune into being like you aren't ugly and act like I just called them a slur or something lol. I have also been called many a slur, only a few of which I can personally reclaim lol. People love being mean but hate the repurcussions of being mean so will latch onto any they see as being easy targets. Pretty privilege is real but so is average privilege. I'm perfectly fine being ugly but I sure wish it didn't come with the everyone tries to abuse/harass you bit.
