      Arnold's Design - After visiting your channel and watching a couple of your videos, I can tell you're the type of person who gets what they want. You do some very interesting things, and I'm going to watch more of your videos. I'm sure one day you will have a Cobra, and the cup holders that go with it. That cup holder you see in my car is a custom piece the wife and I put together. We online ordered one that was pretty close to what we wanted. It was too big of course, so we took it apart, cut it to our own design, and put it back together. It fit just right. It's not used at a cup holder though. One cup hole holds an ashtray, and the other holds my cigs, lighter, and radio remote controller. The "box" part of it hold numerous items. Such as gate opener, garage door opener, flashlight, glasses, chap stick, pen and pad, extra lighter, pistol w/spare mag - you know - necessities needed for the road. The car had no storage space and it became a major problem, not even a place for the proof of insurance and registration. So we decided to add the cup holder and, later, the glove box mounted in the dash. That, too, is small. On race night the cigs come out and the GoPro remote controllers go in. That's what's so nice about the Cobra kit cars, you can build them any way you want to suit your lifestyle. I've gotten several comments about the cup holders, and they tend to be negative. I should do a video on just the cup holder and the glove box. Anyway, thanks for the comment and for watching my video. Let me know when you get yours......

    • @ArnoldsDesign

      @@redbay8527 That's nice craftsmanship on the holders and glove box. I know what it's like to not have storage in a car. I have a small Rubbermaid tote on the floor of my car to hold extras. My truck had more room, but the car gets much better mpg. What was your kit manufacturer, if you don't mind me asking? Did you build the engine?

    • @redbay8527
      @redbay8527  3 роки тому +1

      @@ArnoldsDesign When I bought the Cobra in about 2011(right after the last Space Shuttle landed) I didn't know anything about Cobra kit cars, who made them, what they cost, etc. Now I know more about them. Mine is a Hurricane Motorsports manufactured kit. A guy in Tampa, FL put it together in 2007. It had a 302, 350 hp engine in it when I bought it. It was fine, ran good, was fast, and fun. But, I soon tired of it, and wanted more HP. So I ordered a 347 cu in 500 hp engine for it. That was a step up for sure, and it sounded awesome. I beat the hell out of that engine for several years until one night at the track it broke. After a race I noticed the oil pressure was low and wouldn't come up. I almost raced again, but did not - I went home about 35 or so miles away and kept my eye on the oil pressure which stayed low. The next day, my mechanic came over, evaluated the situation, and we started working on the car - dropping the oil pan to have a look. We didn't believe what we found.....a broken crank shaft!!!! Really broken, not cracked. I should upload some of the pics of it for you to see. One of the mains broke, and the crack went up into the block. The cam shaft bearing slid over and was hitting one of the lifters. The engine was ruined and it's a miracle that it made it home. I sent the engine in for rebuilding(it's my spare engine), and immediately ordered a new engine(the one that's in it now), a Dart manufactured 363 cu in iron block and everything else premium. It dyno'd at 615 hp. I had a choice of carb or EFI, and took the EFI, a decision I regret to this day. But, that is another story that I won't tell now. I have not built any of the engines for this car.
      The old 347/500hp best time was 11.3 secs and the best time for this engine is 10.9 seconds. But, now I can't seem to get it befow 11.5 or 11.6. I have had nothing but trouble with this piece of shit ever since I've owned. Why I have kept it? Because one mechanic after another have told me it can be fixed. And one tuner after another said they could fix it. And none of them ever have. I've paid top dollar for famous tuners and it didn't do any good. I'm at my wits end with it and am on the brink of buying another, maybe with a carb. EFI's are great - IF YOU CAN TUNE THEM. I'll uplink some pics of the broken crank now for you to see....

    • @redbay8527
      @redbay8527  Рік тому

      joemama1151 - It's a front brake lock switch. It didn't last long, either. It was a Summit brand device and it failed on the road one day. My mechanic and I were on a short drive to check things out, and it locked up on me when I tried to cross a two lane road to pull into a gas station. I was in the middle of the road and LOTS of traffic was coming at me from both sides. I just gave it extra gas and(with the front tires locked) muscled the Cobra across the road and into the gas station. The mechanic knew what to do, and with the tools I carry in the trunk, was able to bleed off the master cylinder and free up the front tires. Needless to say I removing the device and have never revisited that set up. Thanks for the comment and I hope you enjoyed the videos.

    • @redbay8527
      @redbay8527  3 роки тому +2

      Marlon Elmore- I road raced at Palm Beach International a few times, but it was too much of a hassle to get to the track as getting rained on was always a threat. And if I broke down I would really be screwed because of the distance I'd have to travel to get the car home. I have a tow truck driver who has agreed to come get me no matter where I'm at. He's very good at what he does and always handles the car carefully when loading it up and getting it home. The track in Palm Beach is about three hours away while the drag strip is a mere half hour. Also, the Palm Beach racing is about $600 for all the expenses to get there, time on the track, and getting home. The drag strip is about $40 for everything including my grandson going with me. So, the road racing is just too much worry. The car did real good, though, in Palm Beach. It cornered with the best of them, even with the wrong tires, and it out muscled most of the other cars in the straightaways. Believe it or not, the best cars in the corners seemed to be the Mazda Miata. They were really under powered in the straightaways but really were impressive in the corners. BUT, the track photographer got a still shot of it with the wheels off the ground. You can see this at: ua-cam.com/video/iTGedjkSHuU/v-deo.html He raced the car twice that night, and showed no mercy to it. He twisted both axles and I had to rebuild the rear end. I went all the way with it, Eaton Tru-Track posi device, bigger, better inards, and the best, strongest axles I could get from Moser. I considered rear end bulletproof at that point. But, I was wrong because my son bent and twisted the axle HOUSING when he raced the car several months ago. I replaced the axle housing with a heavy duty unit(much thicker tubing), and upgraded to a 4-point rear(I had 3 point prior). SO, once again I consider the rear end to be BULLETPROOF!! Not a real Cobra here, but a Cobra replica which is probably faster than an original which had about 400 hp with the Ford 427 Side-oiler engine.
    And why not when crate engines can be bought with 600+ hp, no problems!

    • @redbay8527
      @redbay8527  4 роки тому +1

      Stewart W. You're right, not a real Cobra. And it is faster than the original 1965 427 AC Cobra. According to zeroto60times.com, the 1965 427 did 0 - 60 in 4.5 seconds and the quarter mile in 12.5 seconds. The 1966 427 is listed at 0 -60 in 4.9 seconds and the quarter mile in 13.3 seconds. Why the difference with the same engine - I don't know. I've tried to figure out my 0 - 60 while editing my videos as it shows the time down to 1/100 of a second. I mark when the car first starts to move off the line, then watch the speedometer. Although I know it's not too accurate, when I see the needle hit 60, I check the clock and have come up with a 0 - 60 time of 3.4 seconds. As far as quarter mile, my best time was 10.957 seconds. My top speed is 140 mph, at least on the straighaway at Palm Beach International Raceway. I hit the long straightaway and just GO. When 4th gear winds out, and I shift into 5th, I'm at 140 mph. I'm only in 5th gear for just a few seconds before I have to slow down for the next curve. And crate engines are the way to go. Mine dyno'd at 615 hp at 7300 when first built and cost a mere $13K - bolted right in, too. Thanks for the comment and the info on the car. New rear end housing is being installed today. Heck, those a good times there RedBay!
      I remember the claim by Shelby of 0 - 100 - 0 at 13.8 seconds and a 0-60 time of 4.2 secs back in the day when the 427 was first available. Back then absolutely nothing came close which is why I craved one of these as a schoolboy reading the road tests!
      Years later I could have bought a 289 all original flat-sided body version with 30000 genuine miles on the clock for 1300 British Pounds! Could not afford the insurance being only 23 years or so!
      I continued to lust after a Cobra and finally by 1988, lo and behold kits were available, so between 1988 - 1992 I built a replica 427 from a kit available locally here in South Africa and drove that as my daily driver until 2002 when I sold it. Great car, totally reliable and FUN!
      Mine was built up as a road going car with underbody pipes, soft-top etc. One thing I did not have was monster power though. I used a rebuilt Ford 302 Windsor with performance mods and Borg-Warner T5 box and saw about 300 hp at the wheels. Still fast enough on the road but I never raced it on the track as there were many around with more grunt, 'cos more money!
      I have read that the later 427 Cobras were slower than the originals because Shelby sneakily changed to the Ford 428 engine which was cheaper but it slipped his mind to publicise that change. The 428 was the "soft" version with longer stroke and not as powerful as the Ford 427 engine. That could explain the different times you quote.
      Wishing you many happy years with your beautiful - and damned quick - Cobra!
      As they say - or used to "Take it easy - but take it!"
