  • I got lucky and ran a 11.47 sec, 119 mph, 60' = 1.6 sec. to the Dart's 13.36 sec, 98.84, 60' = 1.92 sec. run. I'm glad I beat him, but this was a very nice Dart. Orlando Speed World in February 2015.

    Obviously Patrick you don't know what a 427 soch motor is, bone stock on gas is about 600 hp@ 6000 rpm.
    That's 1963 technology.also very underrated because of insurance companies. This motor was banned from NASCAR because GM and mopo cried.

      The Cobra did not come with the 427 SOHC motor and was rated at under 500HP. Also the reason the 427 SOHC motor was ruled out of NASCAR is that they were hand made and not in any significant production. I can assure you that Chrysler or GM could have made a few SOHC or even DOHC big blocks by hand if they wanted to. That is not what NASCAR is all about.

      @@mikepetroff4240 :No! You may want to look it up before making that comment. NASCAR banned it because they got wind Chrysler was developing a "DOHC" hemi', which it's estimated hp was above 900. That's when NASCR said "NO! I believe that was stated in the book about the "cammer", about fords "Single" ohc 427! Chrysler discontinued the development after completing 2 prototypes but never tested them because of the ban. Why continue when it would be banned, it's was being developed for NASCR. Ford tried it in NHRA, work great until it started to eat parts and the 6' long timing chain kept stretching and throwing the timing off. They didn't want to spend the time or money to develope a gear system, like Chrysler did, because they were probably afraid Chrysler would have finished theirs first! First to market, first to sales!

    Hey RedBay ... your racing the Cobra on the strip. Have you taken to the track yet? It seems to me that the track is where the Cobra will really perform ... on the strip, you're probably much lighter than most of the other competitors and have such a superior power/weight ratio.

    • @redbay8527
      @redbay8527  5 років тому +3

      Dino Jay - Yes, I've raced at Palm Beach International a few times. The Cobra did real well. It out-powered most of what was there and also out-cornered most of what was there. My tires were the drawback for me. I didn't buy the tires I needed cause I wanted to try it a few times before committing to a set of tires. As it turned out, the trip down there is weather dependent, and if I break the car, I'm stuck down there. It's just a bit much effort and risk to race that far away. I've got a clip from PBIR titled, "AC Cobra has spinout at Palm Beach International Raceway". Check it out - you might like it.

Another guy noticed the cup holders, too - YES, cup holders in a Cobra! Hell, without the glove box and the "floor console", I'd have no place to keep stuff - stuff I need when I go driving - like a flashlight, cigarettes and lighters, ash tray, pens and a pad, driving gloves, registration, gate opener, garage door opener, gun, napkins, chap stick, etc. I'm an old man and I don't like doing without all those things - LOL. Also, on race night I need the storage for everything I've mentioned, PLUS - GoPro equipment, like the remote controllers, air gauge, windshield marker, time slips, rags, etc. Rest assured that the console/cup holder is a custom piece. My wife and I ordered one that was close to what we needed and then COMPLETELY disassembled it, cut it up to our specs, then put it back to together the way we wanted it - small, so it doesn't show so bad, and useful. I'll take some pics and post them showing the console/cup holder and what it usually holds. Give me a day or two and watch for it. It also has a hidden radio. But, that's another story. Do you mind if I ask what rear tires you use. Recently bought a Cobra and the 295/50/15 Goodrich T/A's have zero traction. Was wondering what you're using to get those 60' times.

    • @redbay8527
      @redbay8527  5 років тому +3

      Scott Stubler - I see you've found out that regular street tires are not enough to get these lightweight Cobras hooked up. I once had the same tire as you, and they were terrible on the street - no traction. I have Mickey Thompson Sportsman S/R for street tires, 26x10 on the front and 26x12 on the rear. I use Mickey Thompson 275/50R15 GT Street R drag radial tires for the track. They are 26 inches tall. I usually leave them on the car and rarely use the rear street tires because of the danger of spinning out with very little throttle. The drag radials wear out fast and only last about 6,000 miles. I always order 3 tires because one of them, it seems, will not balance properly. Also, if you're going to race, you should screw the tire to the wheel - or the tires will spin on the wheel and will become unbalanced. 8 screws on the front and 4 on the back does the job for me. Once, my car developed a severe vibration at the end of the race - and it turned out to be the tires spinning on the wheel. If you have a risk of wet roads, you cannot leave the drag radials on - they lose traction immediately when wet. My Cobra is a permanent convertible, and I never drive on a wet road, so the drag radials are no problem. I subscribed to your channel, and I hope to see some Cobra videos on there soon. Good luck with your car and ask me anything you want...I'll help out whenever I can.

After a Google search, I think I'll have to go with 1972 Dodge Dart.?.? I've always liked the Dodge Dart, not too big, and not too small, and with a big block, they were really quick. Thanks for watching my video, though.

    Looked like that Dart was having some problems. Poor thing could barely spin the tires. I know it's a lot heavier than the Cobra but with a 440 it should be able to roll those tires.

    • @redbay8527
      @redbay8527  5 років тому

      Veteran Lowboy Driver - Yes, you're right. Seems like it should have been a little quicker, but you never know - could have been trying a new tune, different tire pressures, having trouble, etc. I thought the 60's Darts(this was a 70's car) were really cool cars. Nice, clean body lines, light weight, and they just looked good. I had a friend with a GTS, and had the 383 in it, and man that car would go, and sounded GREAT. I found some data on a 68 with a 383 at 14.6 secs. Same year with a 340 was 14.8 secs, and a 426 Hemi at 13.1 seconds. And a rare 440 ran 13.3 secs. at 107 mph. Check out: www.automobile-catalog.com/car/1968/629285/dodge_dart_gts_2-door_hardtop_426_hemi_v-8_4-speed.html. So, based on these times, this Dart didn't do bad at all. Most people think the older muscle cars were really fast - but today's muscle cars are faster than the 60's cars. The older cars SOUNDED a lot better than today's cars, though. I remember the High School parking lot in 1968 - lots of high performance cars belonging to the "well off" students. Being a military brat, I was relatively poor, so there was no high performance car in my life - LOL. Our family car was a 1966 Chevy Malibu 4-door with a 6 cylinder engine. I did well for myself in life, so after I retired I bought this AC Cobra clone and was able to experience some power. It came with a 350 hp engine, then I installed a 500 hp, then on to the current 615 hp engine. I know you've left comments on my other videos and I appreciate you watching my videos. Take care, and hope to hear from you again.

      @@redbay8527 hopefully he got it figured out now. You're right 60s muscle cars, while powerful weren't super fast compared to modern cars, but they were so much cooler! I had a 61 Impala in high school major project car but it was coming together. I swapped the 235 6 cylinder and cast iron powerglide for a 396 350 hp and a 400 turbo transmission. It ran decent for as heavy as it was but the sound was awesome, I love the sound of a healthy big block!!

      @redbay8527  Рік тому

      @douglaslane4480 - Really? Damn, I was WAY off on that one. I've always liked those Dodge Darts - in the 60's I saw them with BIG BLOCKS, and I always thought they were the perfect size for a race car. At that time most of the performance cars were big. I was 18 in 1968 and remember seeing all the performance cars. Unfortunately for me, I was the son of a retired Army Sergeant and my family couldn't afford a performance car. We had a 1966 Chevelle with a small 6 banger and a 66 Triumph Spitfire. All my friend's parents owned big American performance cars. I could talk about those times all night. Everything has changed so much since the 60's and that is so sad. I'll tell you one story. I took the Triumph to the shop, the repairman needed a small part for it and asked if I could go get it for him using his car. I said sure as his car was a early 60's Dodge and he had stuffed a 426 Wedge in it. I couldn't believe it? Off I went to the store, nice and slow. Coming back I was stopped at a red light ready to turn left. I looked in the rear view mirror and saw this kid I went to school with that had a hot Corvette pulling up behind me, and also going to turn left. The light turned, and I pulled into the right lane, leaving him the left lane to pass me. I gave it a little bit of gas, he thought I wanted to race and I heard him hit it. When I saw the front of his Vette out of the corner of my eye - I FLOORED IT. It sounded like a bomb going off, and I swear the front of his Vette never got even with the front of my car. I ROARED down the road - way ahead of him. That 426 Wedge was something else. I'll never forget that and from that day on, I always dreamed of having a performance car. Well, thank you for correcting me, and for watching my video. Hope you look at some of the others.
