  • I had a cable start to go bad due to use and got a replacement.
So I took this moment to actually cut open the index cable. Cutting it open it looks like ALOT of wires and the insulation is just not good enough. The single cable design is functionally great but because all the signals audio and video are next to each other...after the armor and insulation breaks down due to use you will have a failure in the cable.
This design should be beefed up/ audio and video should be separate cables in the future to prevent this issue.
Also the cable should be centerline and not all to one side. I hope if they make an index 2 they fix these issues.

I work on these at my current place of business. We have a lot of Index headsets that come in with various problems. Swapping the cable into different headsets multiple times a day also kills these headsets. For such an expense headset, they sure have many annoying issues. There is also very little information on the tear-downs and repairs of these devices for average consumers.

Valve seriously need to redesign this cable. It's one of the downfalls of the index and it's a serious issue. Both of my dead cables have no damage on them what so ever and yet they've gone out and theres literally nothing you can do besides give them more money for another.

Just recently got artefacts on my valve index (white sparkling pixels on black background), after 3 years of usage. I figured i get more or less of the artefacts when bending my cable in a specific place, same as with yours right next to the headset's plastic strap. This video could be useful for me soon. (Also, any update on if it was succesfully repaired?)

I haven't attempted. It looks very possible but it's kinda so many cables that I think some might be fiber optic.
