@@esclavitud4869 It's all explained in the trailer, which spoils much of the ending, Selma says: "I used to dream that I was in a musical, because, in a musical, nothing dreadful ever happens."
Only bjork can get away with such a swift 180 in emotional expression! Another really great example of this is in the outro for pagan poetry film clip where she's wearing that Alexander mcqueen dress with breasts exposed and threads of pearls sewn into her skin. She morphs into like 7 different moods which would make any other actress look crazy but she makes it seem totally natural and seamless
The difference in lyrics with selmasongs, it's fascinating that here it is "you did what you had to do", by her son, and in selmasongs " you have to find out for yourself" it is a message to search what is means and watch the movie what it is about. Very subtle.
This film introduced me to arthouse european films. They have such an unique vibe compared to American cinema, even this one that is supposendly set in the USA.
the last few frames of this video impressed me since the first time, I never forgot that dramatic change in her expression, it literally destroys you 💔
I wish they would put the versions of the film to buy, even as a special or something, cause the stereo sound of the tracks in Selmasongs are far better then what you can hear here but the versions of the film just kills you emotionally. They're far superior and so meaningfully touching
I remember watching this movie when I was 11 yo with my older brother, I ended up in tears completely DEVASTATED, my brother was so concerned for me (and what my parents were going to do because of him playing that movie to me) that i don't think he even had a chance to processed what we had just witnessed.
Small detail, but I've noticed that some versions of the film version do include the repetition with the vocal break/grit at 6:10 in the vocal take. In some versions it like just repeats one of the other repetitions exactly. I don't like this. The one with the vocal break is by far the better and most iconic version of this song and the most plaintive because you really get the clearest depiction of the raw emotional turmoil and desperation of the song and the character of Selma at this point in the film. Sometimes people's voices break unintentionally as a result of emotional strain or screaming or exertion. Vocal breaks are one of my favorite artifacts used in singing and I know that Björk (like most professional singers) is able to use them to great dramatic and emotional effect in her technique. Has anyone else noticed this? I just got the DVD of DITD in the mail from Amazon a couple days ago and it too does not have this vocal break at this point in the song. WHAT IS THE DEAL with this?
That's not a vocal break though. As much as i agree that vocal breaks highlight emotion and are underrated, if you know Björk's songs, this part was her doing like a smoky voice that sounds a bit like a break. It was a bit short here but she's able to pull it off in many performances.
Additon well whatever it is they should’ve kept it. Small details that add to a big picture. It was on the DVD 📀 of DIT that I rented back in 2005 but then it never appeared again on any other DVD 📀.
Kurt Hutchinson yeah and now it seems to appear and disappear randomly in different versions or clips of the film. Which is really weird, I don’t know why they didn’t just leave it in on all versions to begin with instead of this weird copy and paste thing on some versions. Like I’m pretty sure when you get the movie from the iTunes Store 🏬 it doesn’t have it and some DVDs 📀 of it have it and some don’t.
I hate musicals with a passion. With one exception - Dancer In The Dark. It's just so powerful and emotionally loaded I find it miles above the typical "Lloyd Weebber" stuff.
This movie should be made illegal. I haven't been able to bring myself to watch again. I keep telling myself I'll find the strength, but I just can't. :)
This movie caused so many reactions when it came out,, many people even walked out upset. I loved the movie but many people I know hated all the emotions it stirred in them, calling it manipulative.
This is a certain part of an already sad tale where everything just gets all that much more profound and time itself freezes ... And one cannot help but feel that if they were there and it was real ..... they would put their life on the line for Selma . That's how I feel about this specific song/moment in the movie. Maybe it's just me but l think that for English school or art class this movie could be of much more educating than Ann Frank's diary or Hamlet/Go ask Alice?(no thanks, Alice let drugs get the better of her) ... Maybe someday in a fancy European art school it WILL be the benchmark...

Björk is so beautiful, both physically and audibly
I kind of find it very endearing that in her fantasy all of these people are trying to help her. It's like she can't see the bad in any of them.
It’s pretty sad she’s so innocent
She might be on the spectrum
It's also a good example of what people are like and what they could be instead.
Well Selma is… blind. Actually you’re right symbolically this is awesome. Her downfall kindness.

The way she looks at him is what kills me bc she knows that’s the last time she’ll ever see him or hear his voice.

Björk is so heartbreaking-stunning-beautiful
i love how she divided herself in so many faces and personas just to understand her own process as a person
It is very sad and deep that every musical scene is Selma’s imagination☹️
Cannot find my original comment, but the last "I just did what i had to do" chilled my entire soul.
This scene, when you break it down, is downright genius, I've never seen anything like it in a musical (or any film). One of my favorite scenes ever.
