Patty Loveless has one of the finest voices ever. Vince Gill is one of the best guitarists, bar none. And a wonderful, graceful voice. I saw Patty and Vince Gill together many years ago at the Puyallup Fair. Their musicianship and friendship are there for all to see and hear. These are both top drawer American singer/songwriters. Thanks TNT.

Singing at a funeral of a dear friend is an impossible task & I don't know how he did it. Patty sang much louder than normal, covering him so well. She is usually a soft backup singer on this one, even though she is a star in her own right. You should look for the official video instead to hear him at his best. He & George were close friends & George is in several of his videos. Vince wrote this song after losing his brother, several years ago & I have heard this at every funeral I have attended in the last several years. Vince has many hits & is also known for his guitar work. 'Whenever you come around' is probably my fav by him, but his duet with Reba called 'The heart won't lie' is awesome. Also, a fun one by Vince from years ago, is called 'one more last chance' & George is in that video. Cute song & video. And Patty had several great songs & had a fabulous hit many years ago, called 'You don't even know my name' & recently she came out of retirement & sang it as a duet with Chris Stapleton at an awards show. Great song & both versions are amazing. Maybe you heard that one?

Vince and George had a special friendship. He and Patty also are great friends. I love how she gives him her support and then steps back. I've heard that his guitar solo in the middle was not planned but he did it to try to compose himself. You'll catch George near the end of Vince Gill's "One More Last Chance" video. A really young Vince can be seen singing the lead on the Pure Prairie League's video "Amie" and "Let me Love you Tonight".

When my beautiful 19-year old son died over 20 years ago, this song brought me so much comfort, as it allowed me to truly grieve. I still weep every time I hear it. Thank you so much for reacting to this wonderful song. May I recommend listing to the original studio recording to hear Vince Gill's beautiful vocals.

This song was actually written in tribute to Kieth Whitley. He had shelved the song for a while leaving it "incomplete" in Vince's own words. After Vince's brother passed away, he dusted off the pen and paper and added an extra verse as a memorial to his brother, and then considered it "complete".
I spent 15 years in country music radio and this is one of those songs that make you glad that time was taken in order to create a masterpiece.

The guitar instrumental wasn't planned, it was Vince's way of getting ahold of his emotions and the band and Patty just let him have his moment. George Jones was a good friend to Vince and gave him the nickname Sweetpea. Patty and Vince have sung together for decades and often sang backup on one another's recordings. Vince is a legend in bluegrass, country and even rock, with 22 Grammy's and was originally asked by the band Dire Straits to join them and he had just begun his solo career and turned them down. With Glen Frey's death, the Eagles asked Vince to join them and he now plays with them. He started with a band called Pure Prairie League before going solo. Vince has done duets with Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, and his wife Amy Grant among others too.

I left home and thought I would never have to hear it again. I got a little older and homesick while serving in the navy I listened to feel like I was home. Vince was at NW Classen High School (OKC) when I was across town at Putnam City West --- (Class of 75) The 1st time I remember seeing him was with a bluegrass group called Mountain Smoke, that used to come up to Stillwater when I was going to Oklahoma State. Great memories, He is just fantastic and we Oklahomans are so proud of Vince and many of the talented folks to come out of the state. This song really gets to me, the way Patty was there for him, that the 1st people to stand up were Garth and Trisha, fellow Okies... thanks for sharing this with everyone.

There's an upload of this that includes Vince telling a funny story about George Jones.. George used to call Vince "Sweat Pea".
Vince acknowledges Charlie Daniels before singing. Charlie gave an awesome eulogy before singing. He has an beautiful way with words. And he drew loud applause when he spoke a line about "today's cookie-cutter sameness" in country music.
In a strange way, it's almost like Charlie Daniels got to hear Vince sing this at his own funeral. Because when Charlie passed a few years ago, I happened to tune into the livestream of Charlie's funeral, and I saw Vince perform this as a solo. He didn't break down that time.
