Still relevant 8 years later !!!! Great clear to follow tutorial. Thank you. I was looking for a quick refresh view of making and sewing shoe pocket storage bags today that hang on walls or doors or even closet rods. I'm actually making a 56" long single row version for the box storage frame under a jack knife sofa on my newly renovated Class B+ 2001 RV. I've cut out all the fabric and velcro needed for that project in my head but it was almost a year ago and I can use a re-look at making the pockets even though the basic design is precut out and ready to sew pockets onto the base. This caught my eye. The RV is only 21' long including the driving cab area. So that means very little storage. And the cab truck style seats do not have storage pockets on the back of bucket seats and they lack removable head rests so no way to take advantage of the metal rods on those that so many things are made for like hooks etc. Behind the drivers seat about 10-11 inches is the back panel of a dinette bench however. I thought originally I'd put something like 3 to 4 rows of shoe like pockets hung on that area. But instead it turns out that's the best place to hold small folding tables and duffle bag of mattress toppers & even a 5 step tall step ladder. Not leaving much room for a storage pocket BUT hey hey hey here you are with this video share. This would be a great design where the pockets are too deep and allow papers and larger items to be stored safely. I'm thinking a bit wider than you made one to custom fit at the top pocket a road atlas. Those big over sized map books that you buy every 5-10 years when you need an updated version for traveling across the US and Canada. How to safely travel with out damage to them. Usually in cars we've had back seat pockets built in or ones you can hang from the separating head rests. This has been a challenge. My friend who bought a 1993 RV van to renovate her's comes with plush big pockets built in but my gem didn't. Mine is a more strip down model unfortunately one of the compromises after looking for over 2 years and settling for close to it but not my ideal one. It's pretty much ready to hit the road for distance. New Toilets, faucets, vent fans, microwave, antenna, back up camera even the toilet is new. I redesigned the sofa and cushions adding a touch of whimsy to the shank buttons I chose and re-placed even the foam core and all polyester battings. So it's clean and comfy and over the top lovely. I had no idea it would come out this nice because most of that was not planned for. Just needed to clean and replace and update. Color choice was either light tan oatmeal or light dove grey both in marine canvas with a softer hand than some marine canvas but coated side. Went with grey and it's amazing. All soft yellow to marigold shades of yellow accents like a three tier hanging basket and similar. I did not want to go so far as to paint the cabinets white like so many people do. And it's now light and airy feeling even when I've got all the light and heat reflective window treatments up including one for the 14" Vent/exhaust fan. I had to cover it though it was smoke colored cover it was letting in a lot of heat when the days were in the 90's on up outside. The cover in an aluminum like insulated material one one side and a microsuede light grey fabric on the inside also used to cover the window valances did an amazing job of blocking the heat and helping keep the coach cooler. So I'm leaning towards making your design in the microsuede wide enough and deep enough the top pocket to hold an atlas just right and may make the second down pocket divided into 2 or 3 equal widths to keep currant single road maps handy then too. Our cab doors again being more a trip down Ford E350 has no door pockets either. My husbands F250 has great map pockets in the doors but not this RV even though it's newer by 4 years. It had only 40 K miles on it so in decent mechanical shape. New front tires and spare two weeks ago set me back more than expected. Planned on just the spare which was missing when we bought it. I'm finishing up just little odds and ends the end of summer into fall and not much else left to do. I'm waiting on special separating zippers to finish already cut out privacy curtain between cab and coach also another more simple privacy curtain for the back end to provide a changing room outside the tiny bathroom and can be moved to hang between the two twins beds when my husband chooses to stay home and I have a girl friend along. That way we have plenty of privacy sleeping. I think their would be just about enough fabric left to make a 2 to 3 tier pocket for the dinette back. (I saw where someone took a commerical shoe pocket item and screwed it onto a bench wall too on their RV. I really do not have the area to spare for shoes or cleaning supply bottle storage. But definitely enough to work for the atlas and maps as they are slim enough. Very happy I stopped today to watch this video. Well done and thanks for the share eight years later and I'm sure many more decades later too.
Best sewing video i've seen - including being specific about what kind of interface to use, and how to make bias tape (never seen that handy gadget before!) Every step is nice and clear
WOW.... What a great idea and so very useful. This will be a must sew project. Could do with a couple of them in my sewing room and maybe a few more pockets. LOVE THIS.... And fantastic fabric as well. Take Care and Happy crafting.
This was very informative and what an awesome set of pockets. I'm looking at making something very similar to hang on the walls of my van for books and knick knacks. I'm avoiding have shelves and cupboards as I'm not a huge fan of wooden interior schemes. Thanks!
I've upsized this pattern as suggested to create a 4 across x 3 down version. I've cut everything and made the pockets, but I can't see how to stitch them onto the stiffened back piece with a regular domestic machine. Please can you explain more about how to do this?
It needs to be stiff to make it hang properly, but it might work if you hang it in a different way. You could put a wooden dowel through the tube on the back and then tie ribbon to the ends of the dowel to hang. You may want to also add a dowel to the bottom.
Stabilizer is a material that's either sewn or ironed onto fabric to stiffen it. It can be lightweight to stabilize fabric for embroidery, or it can be very thick and stiff like the stabilizer used in this tutorial to give structure to the project. The stabilizer used here is: www.onlinefabricstore.net/pellon-no-72f-peltex-ii-ultra-firm-fusible-stabilizer-double-sided-.htm

Glad it was helpful! Good luck with your project!
This is great, do you think you could do a video on how to sew your own pocket chart for teachers to use school? It would be so helpful.
Absolutely love this, it’s exactly what I am looking for - just wish I knew how to use a sewing machine.
Check out our sewing machine basics video. I hope that helps! Good luck! - ua-cam.com/video/oWj7W_OHaF4/v-deo.html
I really like the no hot glue in this pattern 🥰 also thanks for sharing!!!

You are going to have to do some rolling. Try using chip clips to keep it in place when you are sewing!
Beautiful!
at 2:03 is the diagonal cuts on both sides and all the pieces???
very cute thanks! why are there tins of info in the description box but Never the fabric dimensions? nobody ever puts them in!
I was wondering if you used a regular sewing needle to sew the stabilizer fused fabric, or do you need to use a heavy duty needle?
We just used a regular sewing machine needle and has no problems.
what's the no. of needle you used?
I think it was size 14, but 16 may be better.

What do you do with the stabilizer if it’s not fusible?
You are going to want to sew it to the fabric before constructing your project.
Thank you so much! I’m
So excited about this project.
Can we still make it even without stabilizer cloth?
It needs to be stiff to make it hang properly, but it might work if you hang it in a different way. You could put a wooden dowel through the tube on the back and then tie ribbon to the ends of the dowel to hang. You may want to also add a dowel to the bottom.
Nixon- Tale 4 Stiff plastic canvas.

How much stabilizer was used?
You will need about a yard of stabilizer.
thanks very beautiful
