Karen was easily one of the best voices ever. So many great songs, bringing back so many memories. Yes, I was around when this was new music.

@stephenstubbs7682. Karen Carpenter had relative pitch not perfect pitch. You could play a reference note on the piano and then a second note and she could identify the first note after hearing the second note. Her brother also has relative pitch.

Lets just say...there are the legends and famous female singers....and then there's Karen Carpenter.... Karen is the bar female musicians strive to reach. Welcome to the Carpenter rabbit hole. Their music is beyond great, it is legendary. Considered a legend on the drums. Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote the song. It was their first of 15 #1's on the Easy Listening Charts. Unbelievable.
One of the saddest losses to the music world and the world in general when Karen Carpenter died
She has such a beautiful voice. An A&R man said that when he put their demo on he felt that she was sat next to him singing to him and only him.
Those harmonies at the end 😍i think the words sumptuous and luxurious are probably the best way to describe them.

I have fond memories of this song. I remember sitting in the car with my dad when I was little and this song came on the radio and after she sang "Why do birds suddenly appear every time you are near," my dad said, "she probably has worms," and changed the station.

Excellent reaction Kathryn. Im in my 60s and remember Carpenters well. Herb Alpert heard Karen's voice on a demo in 1969 and signed her brother, Richard, and her to A&M records. Karen received 3 or 4 Grammys in the 70s and sold over 80 million records by 1982. She was 1975 rock drummer of the year according to Playboy. KC had the most beautiful voice-ever, and perhaps THE best female vocalist-ever, because she compels you to listen as she sings in perfect pitch to you, not at you, with emotion and enunciation. No auto-tune or gimmicks. No professional voice or drum instruction. She was known by the studios as 'one take'. She rarely, if ever, did more than one take of any song. She was also the ONLY female harmony/background voice in all her songs. She was truly born with an incredible singing talent. Documentaries point out the accolades to her voice, such as, Paul McCartney said she had the most angelic voice after hearing her sing 'Ticket To Ride'. John Lennon ran into her at an LA restaurant and told her "you have a fabulous voice, luv". Supposedly Frank Sinatra stated that Karen was the only singer he'd pay to hear. I recommend songs such as, Yesterday Once More, Solitaire, This Masquerade, Need To Be In Love, Hurting Each Other, Only Yesterday, I Can Dream Cant I, Rainy Days and Mondays, Crescent Noon, Ordinary Fool, Superstar, We've Only Just Begun, A Place To Hideaway, and A Song For You. KC never knew true love. One of her few friends included Dionne Warwick. 5'3" KC really lost weight, due to anorexia, in earnest beginning in 1975. She died in Feb 1983 at age 32 due to heart complications from anorexia.

Richard's lush arrangements and their use of massive overdubbing with just the two siblings voices grabbed me right away way back then. After hearing the Carpenters do a completely unique version of the Beatles "Ticket to Ride", I searched all over the city for the 45 rpm until I finally found it in a tiny, dingy little record shop. Thrilled beyond belief!!
Karen and Richard were everywhere in the seventies. They even had their own variety show on TV. Both were extremely talented. Karen sadly passed way before her time. She was happiest behind her drum kit and didn't really want all the attention of being the face of the band. You should also check out any of the videos of her playing, the joy on her face was priceless.

That was a Burt Bacharach and Hal David composition. Richard added the opening tinkles. Legendary writing team, if by chance you are not familiar. It started life in 1963 with three failed efforts. Herb Alpert gave Richard the song and said see what you can do with it. You heard what he did. For comparison go listen to the Richard Chamberlain original cover of the song. Night and Day. This was a lip sync not live. Also used the YOU set that is featured in numerous Carpenters promo videos. The most famous time being the We’ve Only Just Begun use.
The song is live in some concerts and Karen is vocally live in a BBC show where the rest are using a track.
If you want a song example of Carpenters performing fully live, not a full concert, it would be from 1970. They were on The Ed Sullivan Show and performed The Bacharach/David Medley outside an Army hospital for vets at a Veterans Day special. It was live to tape. It features all vocals and harmonies live, no hidden violins etc. Karen live singing/harmonizing and drumming. It’s magical. I’m an OG fan and this is one of my faves as it just has everything. I’ll look and see how much Carpenters you’ve done. Subscribing…

Best voice of all time!
Paul Williams wrote a lot of songs for The Carpenters but I don't know if he wrote that one or not. What a lot of people don't know about is how they got that massively lush sound on their backing vocals. It was all done by Karen and her brother Richard. They probably spent more time in the studio laying down backing vocal tracks than any other instrument.

Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote it...the Carpenters did a medley of Bacharach songs early on. Look it up, it's fantastic.
Karen Carpenter was a once in a generation voice. Perhaps once in many generations. Considered by many in the music industry across all genres to be the best female voice of all time, and also regarded as one of the best drummers of all time. There are others who have more powerful voices, yes, but Karen had an extremely rare perfect pitch, and range of more than three octaves as a contralto. She also earned the nickname of one take Karen, for her ability to walk into the producer's studio and record an entire album, flawlessly in a single take. A vocal phenom gone way too young. If only she had considered herself to be as beautiful as the rest of the world did.
The song was written by Burt Bacharach and was given to the Carpenters to see what they could do with it and they nailed it. Richard's arrangements were legendary : )

I love it when the younger generations realize what real music is, in comparison to today's computerized crap. I recommend Carpenter fans get " The Carpenters Essential Collection" CD. It has more than 50 songs. They made the song "Superstar" a hit before Luthor Vandross did and his version was beautiful.

Karen's brother Richard was integral to the sound and success of The Carpenters. It's his lush arrangements (he and Karen often overdubbed their own harmonies) that give the perfect setting for that voice....
When it was recorded she was also playing the drums at the same time.

This is far from their best song . How do I know? I saw the Carpenters in 1972. I think the Burt Bacharach Medley was pure magic. Her best songs singing and drumming were on her cover of Help at the Boudokan in Japan in 1974 and the one from a BBC concert and Dancing in the Streets. Her very best songs ?-so many. Rainy Days and Mondays, Superstar ,A place to Hideaway, Goodbye to Love, Yesterday Once More. But the very best song in my opinion was released 11 years after Karen died. Trying to Get the Feeling Again was recorded in 1975 and then lost. It was found again by Richard Carpenter and released 19 years after it was recorded and again 11 years after Karen died

I've not yet decided but like many TV show performances of the era, I believe it was lip synch'd from the studio record. Especially the orchestra and over-dubbed harmonies imply that. Although I'm sure Karen could sound that good live. No matter, it was a beautiful song. PS: Richard Carpenter did use many songs written by others (especially at first) but his arrangements brought out Karen's voice so well. Check out We've Only Just Begun, Superstar, Rainy Days and Mondays, and Goodbye To Love.
