Otyken is one of my favorite groups, of late. Ummet Ozcan does a lot of cool stuff as well, but Otyken already uses a "throat singer" of their own on most of their songs. While this is now my new favorite, the track "Phenomenon" is pure sonic ambrosia. Also, as someone also noted, check out their concerts. They are possibly better live than on video. Slaínte.

Ötüken was the capital of the First Turkic Khaganate and Uyghur Khaganate. It has an important place in Turkic mythology and Tengrism. Otukan (Ötüken) is also one of the names given to Mother Earth. Otuken is located in Kharkhorin district in Övörkhangai Province of present-day Mongolia.
Etügen Eke (Mother Earth) is an earth goddess in Tengrism. She was believed to be perpetually virginal. The word "etugen" associates with woman and daughter of Kayra. Also her name may have originated from Ötüken, the holy mountain of the earth and fertility gddess of the ancient Turks. Medieval sources sometimes pair Etugen with a male counterpart named Natigai or Nachigai(Natikai, Natıkay), although this is probably a mistake based on a mispronunciation of Etugen. In mythology Etugen is often represented as a young woman riding a grey bull.

Ummet Ozcan is the real name of male vocalist and he is of Turkish decent. Otyken is pronounced "OH-too-kyen" and they are of Chulym decent in Siberia. Both of the languages stem from the same Turkic language family that are from the region of Altai in Siberia.

When translated from English to Turkish, the word Rüzgâr, which is of Persian origin, appears, although the word Yel still exists in Turkish.

Thank you for checking this out. Otyken are a group from remote central Siberia. They are all members of small tribes (Chulym, Ket, Selkup, Tuvan, etc.) who speak historically related Turkic languages. There are just over 200 native speakers of the Chulym language left in the world. Like other tribes in the region, they were decimated by centuries of invasion and war, and more recently by the rampant environmental destruction starting in the Soviet era.
They play authentic traditional instruments, made by the band-members and their families. The artists also sew their own costumes. These are based on traditional indigenous outfits, but incorporate attributes of several Siberian tribes at once. They want to be ambassadors for all of the indigenous people of the region.
Their instruments include: ikili (a two-stringed bowed instrument used in Siberia, similar to the Mongolian morin khuur); khomys (jew’s harp, also known as “jaw harp”); rattles similar to maracas and tambourines; a local variant of the mandolin; and several kinds of drums, as well as modern electric bass guitar and electronic keyboard/synthesizer. They occasionally play a saxophone they found abandoned in the forest near one of their villages.
My favorite description of their ikili is “You look like someone who no one should mess with because your instrument was made out of a freakin’ BEAST!”
Otyken incorporate throat singing and chanting into their vocals, as well as imitating wild animal sounds and bird calls. When they were founded, they started off doing straight-up folk music. When they began to add a fusion of folk with modern rock sounds, they found themselves attracting fans from all over the world.
They are fully aware that their language and culture are dying. Part of their purpose in performing and recording their music is to leave behind a record of their culture before it is gone. Their manager and producer is a Russian who is sympathetic to their history. Through these performances, they are getting their story out to the world.
To date, they have released tracks mainly in Chulym, but also in Khakass, a related tribal language, and one song in Russian, addressed to the people who took their land. As they say in “Paradise Lost”: “The land is yours now, but the sky is ours.”

Otyken means "place of power". The girls were summoned from the indigenous villages in Altai, Russia. They speak both Russian and their native language - some from the Turk family of languages. The lead singer's name is Azyan, she used to be a regular cow-milker, has no musical education. All they do is from their natural talent and culture!
