YES!!! When I was in high school we did this talent expo concert where you had to come up with unique acts. You couldn't just get up on stage and sing something. Me and five friends of mine put this song to a dramatic stage performance. We recreated the video and did our own thing. We kicked ass and won first place!! We had the custumes and everything. Fond memory. Ha!!!
But my all time favorite Styxx song is "The Best of Times." Beautiful number.🎉

  • @lonbecker113
    @lonbecker113 Місяць тому +4

There is a story behind the song that is impossible to get from the song. Dennis DeYoung, the singer here, loved concept albums. The rest of the band at best put up with them. The previous album (my favorite of theirs) tells the story of the rise and fall of an actual dance club in Chicago that they used to go to growing up called the Paradise Theater. The Kilroy album tells the story of a dystopian future when rock music has been outlawed and a musician called Kilroy leads a rebellion. In this song Kilroy escapes from prison by somehow short circuiting a robot guard and using his shell as a disguise.
It is more of a time-capsule that for a brief time there was a kind of panic that Japan was going to overtake the west technologically and economically. In Pink Floyd you get the line "got to compete with the wily Japanese" and there was a movie Gung-Ho which was a comedy based on this fear. Then in the 90s Japan's economy stagnated for a very long time and now we panic about the Chinese instead.
I do remember that when I first heard this song I thought it was Queen rather than Styx. It does not sound much like Paradise Theater, and Queen was coming off of The Game with "Another One Bites the Dust"
It is true that Styx is one of the bands that has kind of become unhip in retrospect despite a string of 4 really great albums. ELO has kind of gone the other way. They were the height of unhip at the time, but since Guardians of the Galaxy they have become respectable. Styx seems to have gone in the other direction.

24 years ago, my wife and I walked into Jamesport Brewery in Ludington, Michigan. There was a man playing an acoustic guitar and I wasn’t really paying attention to him for the first few minutes we were there. After listening to him and wondering what he was playing, I realized it was “Mr. Roboto”. And he was just jamming it out as best as he could and singing his heart out. John Merchant is name. He will always be a legend to me.

Re-upload, and you've already seen a few other Styx songs ("Man In The Wilderness", "Queen Of Spades", "Renegade", "Suite: Madame Blue", "Too Much Time On My Hands"), so you already have an idea of typical Styx music and that they have a wide variety of song styles (with 3 lead singers/songwriters); see below for more song suggestions.
As mentioned, this song is from a sci-fi/political rock opera. It is also an outlier from the typical Styx songs (even though they have a wide variety of styles). Pure ballad "Babe", european folk "Boat On The River", and jazz-rock fusion "A Day" are also outliers.
Kilroy is the name of the character in the story, and not an action to be taken. It's origins go back to WWII where allied GIs wrote "Kilroy Was Here" and a drawing after an attack or raid, and Dennis DeYoung heard stories from his relatives about it; so he gave that name to the character that is the symbol of resistance to an authoritarian government of a future where rock music is banned. In concert, you got a summary of the story and they showed a mini-film before the concert. It was OK in a theatre, but for outdoor festivals of drunks it didn't work - they should have just played their usual mix which includes a lot of harder-driving rock.
    More typical...
Dennis DeYoung: "Come Sail Away" (NOT Official video, album audio or live 1983,1996), "Lady", "CASTLE WALLS", "Pieces Of Eight", "Claire De Lune/Ballerina".
Tommy Shaw: "Fooling Yourself", "Blue Collar Man", "Crystal Ball", "Love In The Midnight".
James "JY" Young: "Miss America", "Young Man", "Snowblind", "Man Of Miracles".
"Fooling Yourself" live performance by Styx with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra is a fun one( ua-cam.com/video/brDDzKOcvPA/v-deo.html ). Tommy also did an awesome "lockdown" multi-remote version of "Fooling Yourself" with the CYO( ua-cam.com/video/nECouHrb6aQ/v-deo.html ).

"Kilroy was here" began as markings from an inspector named Kilroy in the shipyards that were building the warships. As the ships required routine inspections for quality control during construction. He would mark each section with this phrase to indicate that it had been inspected, and presumably, to make sure the ship builders knew their work was being monitored. That's where the armed forces got the name and phrase from, and used it as psychological warfrare.

Styx was dipping their toes back into the concept album pool. Kilroy was here was a callback to the meme during World War II that showed people's opposition without overtly calling out anything in particular, sort of symbolic like that blade of grass that grows through concrete.
Styx's Storyline (I saw this in concert)
The Paradise Theater was closed and was a museum to the destruction of Rock and Roll, with a loop of Kilroy k*lling a concert goer with his guitar. He wanted to clear his name and bring the people responsible for this to justice. There were robots that took over a lot of manual tasks for us. Kilroy disguised himself as one of these robots to break out of prison ("Thank you very much Mr. Roboto for helping me escape when I needed to"). Throughout the story it was found out that the leader of the Anti-Rock and Roll movement, thinly veiled reference to the Moral Majority IMHO, actually did the k*lling and blamed it on Kilroy. They used this as a touchstone to ban all rock music. This was Styx's attempt to bring music back to the people.

"Mr. Roboto" warns about the advance of technologies and censorship.
The protagonist, Robert Orin Charles Kilroy, hides himself inside of a robot to escape the prison.
From the album liner notes :
_"Kilroy was just a man whose circumstances went beyond his control..."_
Dennis De Young (Keyboard, Lead Vocals) as Kilroy
James Young (Guitars, Lead Vocals) as Dr Righteous
Tommy Shaw (Guitars, Synthesizer, Shami-Sen, Lead Vocals) as Jonathan Chance
Chuck Panozzo (Bass Guitar &Bass Pedals) as Lt Vanish
John Panozzo (Drums & Percussion) as Col Hyde
    __________________________________________________
    THE PAST
Dr Everett Righteous, founder and leader of the MMM (The Majority For Musical Morality), became influential in American politics through the use of his own cable TV network.
He spoke about the evils of rock & roll music, and how its permissive attitudes were responsible for the moral and economic decline of America.
He was charismatic, entertaining, and above all, he understood the media. The MMM soon gained enough power to have rock & roll banned.
    THE PRESENT
It is a future where Japanese-manufactured robots, designed to work cheaply and endlessly, are the caretakers of society.
"Mr Robotos" are everywhere, serving as manual labor in jobs that were once held by humans.
Dr Righteous enforces his own morality by holding nightly rallies where crowds hurl rock & roll records and electric guitars into huge bonfires...
Jonathan Chance, the rebel leader of an underground movement to bring back rock & roll, has made Kilroy the symbol of his cause.
Meanwhile, Kilroy has spent a number of years in prison. With no hope of release, he is subjected to the humiliation of mind control via the MMM cable network.
In an attempt to contact Kilroy, Jonathan jams the airwaves of the MMM network, replacing a mind control session with outlawed footage of a Kilroy concert.
Inspired by Jonathan's message, Kilroy plots his escape. Late one night, he makes a daring attempt to free himself by overpowering a Roboto guard.
Disguised as a Roboto, Kilroy moves freely throughout the city leaving graffiti-coded messages for Jonathan.
Jonathan discovers the "rock code" which leads him to the old Paradise Theatre, now the site of Dr Righteous' Museum of Rock Pathology.
There he sees the last Kilroy concert mechanically depicted by Kilroy look-alike robots as the violent end of rock & roll...
And there, he and Kilroy meet for the first time...

Your are right , this did sound like song from a Broadway show , I thought for sure back then that it was. It was something that Styx just wanted to do I guess , but nobody liked it, as great a band that thru were, and as great a singer as Dennis DeYoung was . But guess what, decades later now in 2024, companies are planning and developing robots for company and private use in the next few years. That was the 80’s, but this is 2024, what we knew as the future back then.. (“ The year 2000” they used to say😄)

This song pretty much did it for all of us… this was the end for the rock band Styx. I didn’t dislike it and it was actually kind of a cool song but it just wasn’t the Styx we all knew. But it was definitely a huge part of the 80’s.

A lot of people didn’t care for Styx singing this song. I liked it myself though. The rest of the group thought that the unofficial head of the group was taking the band too far into another direction with this song.

Broadway is EXACTLY what this was meant to be. The lead singer convinced the rest of the band to take this direction, story with sets, etc. There's even footage on YT of the musical. Sadly, it tanked and broke the band up.

This song and album are the reason for the hate part of the love/hate relationship with the band. They were just loved before this even though most of their hits were ballads. Their rock song Renegade is actually used by the Pittsburgh Steelers during games to pump up the crowd when they need a big defensive stop. For some reason, it actually works a lot of the time. Dennis DeYoung, who was a founding member, just completely wet the bed with this whole album and making it and the tour some big concept thing. The album didn't sell and because of the big play aspect of the stage show, they lost a lot of money on the tour. It was the end of Styx.

  • @ccrider327591

OK. There's absolutely no controversy for me. I saw Styx on tour for the "Kilroy was here" album. You said it was like a "Broadway play" and you are correct. The whole album was a concept album that told a story about a dystopian future. The guys literally acted out this story and played the music from start to finish. Literally one of the best concerts of my life. Sadly "Mr Roboto" became some sort of "turning point" to some of the fans because of it's popish sound and what some mistakenly thought was a joke or "fluff". I have to assume they never saw the show that I saw. It definitely wasn't a joke or fluff in any way. It was a small part of a much bigger production and storyline. And to this day, it's still disliked, unfortunately. There's a ton of drama that followed.

There was a song in the 1960's by Jagger and Evans using basically
the same premise. Predicting the current 2024 world we live in.
Why was this one reviled and destroyed Styx don't know?
I though the whole album was alright. Bought the cassette at
the local mall at FYE after drinking an Orange Julius. The 80's
were a different era for sure.

This was a concept album about it a robot named Kilroy. And they did the concerts where the bad members acted out a story in between songs. It was more like a broadway production. The band hated this completely. They want it be a rock band and they were Doing this theatrical bs.
That being said this is a very catchy song. Totally get why it was hit.

Machines to dehumanize if that's not telling the future, I don't know what is cuz if you'll look around you'll see a lot of us that are oblivious of human emotions. Well maybe not emotions but pretty much video instead of help I guess for a lack of a better thought. But again, I thought this was a pretty good album myself. I bought it for this song but when I listen to it I also liked. Don't let it end and heavy metal cuz heavy metal is similar to what's going on now with books instead of music but at one point in time that was music as well. Specifically rock and roll. Aim tomorrow at kiss and band similar to them

The reason Mr. Roboto broke the band is that Tommy Shaw and some of the other members wanted to be in a rock band. Dennis DeYoung whose songs were more popular wanted to take the band in a different direction. Not only by doing more commercial ballads but even going more concept album oriented.
On top of that he wanted to get into video much like The Who had done with their Rock Musical "Tommy" or Pink Floyd's The Wall. The other bandmates just weren't having it.
Which is why for years after forcing Dennis out of the band due to health reasons they refused playing this song live in concert. It just left a bad taste in their mouths. Even though it was there most requested hit. 😢
