The transition to menopause has historically lacked comprehensive discussion and is often perceived as an abrupt occurrence without recourse. Our guest today has emerged as a vocal advocate, shedding light on the journey from perimenopause to menopause and providing empowering strategies for women navigating this transformative phase.
Today, on the Dhru Purohit Show, Dhru sits down with menopause expert Dr. Mary Claire Haver. Dr. Haver guides us through the myths and misconceptions surrounding perimenopause and menopause. She sheds light on the misguided research and beliefs that contributed to a lack of awareness about this transition for women and the challenges women face during this time. She also shares her top tips for navigating this period, including hormone replacement therapy, supplements, and lifestyle changes. This episode is a must-list for women of any age!
Dr. Mary Claire Haver is board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a Certified Culinary Medicine Specialist. In 2021 she opened Mary Claire Wellness, a clinic dedicated to caring for the menopausal patient. She developed the best-selling book and program called The Galveston Diet, a three-pronged lifestyle plan that encourages fuel refocusing, intermittent fasting, and anti-inflammatory nutrition to manage hormonal symptoms, stabilize weight, and revitalize the body as it ages to provide benefits that will last a lifetime.

I also believe Floride had something to do with it. Hitler put this in the water supply. The chemical is not from natural sources, it is byproduct from the manufacturing of aluminum. The natural Floride from the ground is different. I was on well water under 19. I started seeing changes in my body from the time I lived in the city on municipal water supplies, yet could get a doctor to d out the cause. I am 70 now and filter all my even bath water from Floride and other toxins. I had to do my research for years to find answers to this and other questions. Until I find a functional physician, I will get no answers. Because of my age now , I'm just expendable to the medical profession.

My mum got diabetes and then we think had early dementia. Was admitted to hospital with covid and due to her early dementia, this helped them make the decision to ‘help her along her way’ - aged 69!! So basically that hrt study which stopped her going on hrt, effectively could have killed her!! I’ve just started peri menopause and with the family risk of dementia, I’ve started hrt reluctantly. After much research in the past few weeks, I’m 100% confident that it’s the right decision.

I'm a Dr. Haver fangirl! Now that the news is out about HRT being beneficial, I wish our health(sick)care and insurance industries would get onboard. Also, our employers need to start providing menopause workplace benefits by offering reduced-hours schedules, expanded sick leave that could be used for perimenopuase or menopause symptoms, increased or more flexible paid time off, and more opportunities for employees to work from home.

A few weeks on estrogen...heartburn almost completely gone, no palpations! I was losing my mind over feeling like crap. My mum's going through menopause right now and she’s personally not interested in HRT unless as a last resort, so we’ve been looking for supplements to help manage some of the symptoms. One thing we’ve found that has helped with symptoms like hot-flashes, joint pain, and weight gain is Tongkat Ali. She’s been on the same standardized hot-water Tongkat Ali root extract that I’ve also been taking for a few months now and she tells me her quality of life has improved a lot, especially for the hot flashes which she says has been the most disruptive symptom for her. I recommended this to her because it’s helped me with my own energy, fatigue, and stress levels, and I’m just so glad it’s helped.

Samer here! My mum is cautious about using non-natural products, so we began exploring Tongkat Ali in early 2018. Through our extensive research, we discovered Akarali - Tongkat Ali. I take Tongkat as well; it's a great product. It is considered Malaysian Ginseng apparently. It is also a testosterone precursor & testosterone booster. Women also become very testosterone deficient when going through menopause and post menopause. It's funny that a lot of the focus is still on Estrogen predominantly, because we actually have a sharp drop in Progesterone. Testosterone.as well as Estradiol from the ovaries when we enter menopause. After that for the rest of our lives, the ovaries have shut down and produce virtually almost zero testosterone, Progesterone & Estradiol. Our fat cells do produce Estrone though (which is a weaker form of Estrogen) but not the best kind to have as it can play a probable role in developing cancers later on if a post menopausal woman is overweight/obese.

I can not express how grateful I am to this Dr. You give us hope! I do have a really important question though- How is hormone therapy bringing down high cholesterol if high cholesterol and other cardiovascular issues are contraindicated for hormone therapy? I am 45 and my dad had 2 heart attacks by 50 and my only brother had bypass surgery at 30. I know there to be a genetic predisposition and I have always had high cholesterol even when I was 110 lbs and was a competitive figure skater. I heard that hormone therapy was one of the best things for this kind of genetic situation. Now I worry if I have some heart disease(which I think it would be hard to find anyone over the age of 50 in American that doesn't have some degree of plague, high cholesterol, etc) than hormone therapy is going to make it worse. How do we know where the line is?

I’m very frustrated because so many doctors I’ve seen don’t take into consideration that many women have other health conditions or disabilities that definitely affect our menopausal health. Im a 52 year old woman who was born with mild cerebral palsy and then, was diagnosed with epilepsy at 15 …within a year after getting my first period. The seizures were complex partial. I had my children when I was 24 and 26. During these couple years my seizures decreased and my children aren’t disabled in any way. As I started perimenopause my seizures increased and changed to simple partial seizures. Now, that I haven’t had a period for over a year my epilepsy has gone from about a dozen seizures down to 5-6 seizures per month. So, menopause is completely different for every single woman. This video was helpful in many ways showing not to treat it as a normal blanket part of health care.

Agree. The loss of estrogen negatively affects the structure and function of all body organs. The #1 killer of women is heart disease not breast cancer. Loss of estrogen is the #1 reason for heart disease in women, not even considering an increase in Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis, and genitourinary issues. We don’t need antidepressants, we need estrogen!

I learned about CornishX chickens as I entered menopause. They are bred to be estrogen sensitive (also white turkeys and some salmon), so if they are fed soy (estrogen), They gain weight extremely fast with less feed. I started using flax seed (also estrogenic) in my smoothies around the same time. I was so hungry and gained weight. Then, I looked at myself and my female relatives. All large breasts and at menopause, they got huge. Turns out, we are estrogen dominant. Then I learned that about 2 years prior to entering menopause, progesterone drops, throwing off the all important estrogen/progesterone balance. So that's why we get even more E dominant. I tried some OTC progesterone cream and felt much better. I learned that any carbs set off my cravings, so I try to stay away,. But just like any addiction, just one dose will set off the cravings again. When I crossed menopause - almost no symptoms. A few mild hot flashes, missed one period, had one heavy one, then never again. That was at 58. Easy, maybe because of my estrogen dominance. Women (and doctors) should know that, if they are estrogen dominant, it's a whole other ball game. And it's about the E/P ratio, not absolute amounts.

Fortunately she was still quite strong and has the "bones of a dinosaur", as her doctor once said. God created our bodies to work and I think making sure you eat well, supplement vitamins that you need and lesson your stress. I had a very stressful job two years before cancer and I ate well, I think stress really screws up your body.

@@br4653 Guess what? Women taking estrogen fair better if/when diagnosed with breast cancer than those who aren’t. I’ve always done self-breast exams & have gotten my annual mammograms so I’m not worried. I entered menopause at 57. I eat healthy, maintain a healthy weight, do weight-bearing as well as aerobic exercise & I take vitamin supplements. Still, at age 58 a Dexa scan showed I have osteopenia. I started HRT/MHT right before my 60th birthday. (I would have started earlier had I known that the benefits far outweigh the risks.) More recent evidence has shown that HRT/MHT is protective against a multitude of health conditions: bone loss, cardiovascular disease, colon cancer, etc. I’ll take my chances.

I always suspected the Health Insurance industry is behind the negligence of women, just to save money not paying for treatments. At work they offered additional health insurance to pay for cancer treatments (if you get it) I was shocked that most Health Insurances refuses to pay for some proven treatments. And the Health Ins coverage decisions are made by people with No Medical education. My father broke his leg and laid in the hospital for 2 days waiting for the health Ins approve his surgery. insurance was hoping we would not wait and pay out of pocket for the surgery, but we could not afford it, he worked 35 years all the while paying for health insurance and the one time he needed it, they made him wait suffering for 2 days for surgery. This is New York USA.

I’m having bad headaches and I exercise and am taking good care of myself. I do have a lot of stress right now in life, but wanted to know if with missing an ovary and fallopian tube, will I go into menopause earlier or are there things that I need to take Earlier? How will it affect me as I am again getting this weight gain happening that I can’t control and I exercise and run and lift weights and eat well. I’m a nutritionist but yet I can’t control it and then I have bad migraines this year. Thank you around my cycle. Appreciate your help.

FWIW, I had to get a benign cyst removed from my right ovary almost exactly a year ago tomorrow. I did a lot of research to see if I should get my tubes removed bc it dramatically reduces the chances of ovarian cancer but after doing a lot of research, I learned that there is a possibility that my hormones would decline/be compromised by doing this so I chose to keep my tubes (given that I have a reduced risk, don't have family history or blood tests raising any alarm bells for ovarian cancer).
