I had a virus last March. During that time I could not stand to eat anything except eggs. I was really sick. In three weeks, I lost 18 lbs. Not a good way to loose weight. But, I have had gastric paresis for seven or 8 years. My gut reset during this virus. I no longer have to avoid salads, and lentils. I’m no longer on meds for this gut problem. I slowly introduced these food back into my diet. I put 15 pounds back on. Four days ago I started on the intermittent fasting. I’m going 16-18 hours before eating. So happy I came across Dr. Mindy. It’s great to have some info to help me on This journey. I’m 78, and want to stay healthy.

That’s how I felt at the beginning until I started gaining weight from doing longer fast. I had less energy to work out properly. I was way more lean, had more energy, looked and felt better when I focused on my workouts, more than focusing on fasting. In the past six months fasting became an obsession. And I’ve gained more, my weight has fluctuated more in that six months than I have in 10 years.. fasting can really mess metabolism up, especially if you are over the age of 40.

I did a 28 day water fast years ago. I was amazed at how heightened my senses were…especially my sense of smell. I couldn’t drink from styrofoam cups because the chemical smell was so strong. My son’s bedroom suddenly smelled like a high school locker room and my wife’s breath was almost unbearable. I’ll never forget taking a drink of açaí juice on day 29. It was like I was drinking some magical elixir. And yes, I lost quite a bit of weight.

Wow! I used to eat constantly and binge on junk food every night. I would have thought you were crazy if you suggested fasting. Then a friend convinced me to just try the 24 hours fast (one meal in a day). Surprisingly it was quite easy. I did have some hunger pangs late in the evening but just quenched it with some warm herb tea. Now I do it often and it doesn't bother me at all. Other than an occasional piece of dark chocolate, I've totally lost interest in junk food. It's really amazing how it works. And yes I'm losing weight faster than I ever thought possible.

We also have to understand that obesity is not normally caused by what we eat or whether or not we work out. Obesity is first and foremost about resolving trauma (see German New Medicine). When it's not about trauma, it's about stress in general, and/or it is about having a sedentary lifestyle. Fasting can certainly help, but we have to make sure we're also doing something about our emotional health and wellbeing.

I think it’s more healthy to do it the way you native people have been doing. I don’t think it’s as healthy to obsess over daily or weekly 24 hour fast. I’ve always been very lean and healthy, had tons of energy because I was a runner and focused on my workouts, then my fasting length. But ever since I started following Dr. Mindy and other guru on UA-cam, I started implementing these weekly 24 hour or 30 hour fast followed by daily 16 to 20 hour fasts thought I was losing weight but I actually lost muscle. My metabolism slowed way down, and I have put on more weight in six months focusing on fasting than I have in 10 years. My workouts have suffered. I don’t have the energy or the strength to have. My grandfather was a doctor and he talked about fasting maybe once a month for 24 to 48 hours. so I think it’s beneficial every now and then to do a reset but I don’t think that this focus on daily fasting is healthy especially for women

I’ve been doing one 24hr to 30hr fast per week followed by daily 16-20hr fasts. at the beginning, I was losing weight, so I thought. But I was actually losing muscle. And then I think that the fasting slowed my metabolism down so much so that I’ve actually put on weight doing this fasting. And I eat pretty healthy. The most fattening things I eat are avocados, nut butter, and raw almonds and raw walnuts. But I’ve put on a significant amount of weight since I started focusing on fasting more than exercise. I was way leaner, had more energy and looked and felt better when I was just doing 12 to 16 hour fast Well having more energy to go for a long run and do hit training. I’m afraid to stop fasting the way I have been doing because I’ve seen other women who were very lean. This video just re-inspired me about the brain clarity and keto feeling and the gut biome - I know this was aimed more at women, but so glad I listened. Going to reinvigorate and reset a bunch of things in my body this week and moving forward. Btw, I am now 3.5 yrs into IF and regular exercise - it's completely changed my life as a 40+ male. Besides being stronger, healthier, feeling better, my mental state has changed, and whereas I used to be prediabetic hba1c, I am now a 4.2 and also don't have mood swings. My past relationships would've likely benefited from a less moody me.

For losing 33 lbs, in addition to fasting I’m very conscious about my portion control, walk or workout every other day and most of all, when you go out for shopping, cut down on all sugar and carb products. Say no for cereals, candies, soft drinks, chocolates, slurpy , ice creams and pasta. In short, the main thing is “ Discipline “

Although I have a home electrolyte water with salt, potassium, and magnesium. No snacks at all or coffee. Only the electrolyte water during fast. My refeeds during fast breaks are junk though.
I made sure I was measuring my capabilities and how my body's needs changed. It would be cool to see what the chemical changes happened inside too.

Excellent presentation and interview. An important matter that doesn't get sufficient attention is the balance between fasting and activity levels, especially intense exercise. I've had the best results maintaining a good level of day-to-day activity, ending fasts with intense workouts, followed by intense, healthy pig-outs until the rebuilding and re-fueling phase is is done. And it's important to count intense daily activities such as shoveling heavy snow as workouts. I also make it a point to treat them as workouts, warming up, then "attacking" them in high intensity interval fashion, and easing down.

As someone with Hashimotos I have been made aware and in my case can attest it is true, fasting or going extremely low carbohydrates will cause reverse T3 to kick in which a mimic of T3 but works in the complete opposite way. 😂instead of converting T4 to energy which is what T3 does, reverse T3 stops the energy conversion, makes you feel tired, lacking energy and of course this can cause a slow and steady weight gain. I still do low carbohydrates, but instead of 20g maximum I aim for 30 - 35. Still pretty low but that bit extra works to give me the energy I need when T3 is messing with me and I use it to exercise as hard as I can😮 my diet is strict, no sugar no processed food, animal, protein and fats snd only organic rice or gluten free oats in tiny amounts to up the carbs. And I only eat raspberries and cucumbers 😊
