I did a 28 day water fast years ago. I was amazed at how heightened my senses were…especially my sense of smell. I couldn’t drink from styrofoam cups because the chemical smell was so strong. My son’s bedroom suddenly smelled like a high school locker room and my wife’s breath was almost unbearable. I’ll never forget taking a drink of açaí juice on day 29. It was like I was drinking some magical elixir. And yes, I lost quite a bit of weight.
You explained this experience so well. I can relate to much of this but not so much the sense of smell as I didn't fast that long. My sense of smell is pretty good anyway I think. That first drink after a three day dry fast was like a divine liquid handed to me in a gold chalice direct from God himself.
Hi! When you say 28 days, do you mean 28 days not eating for a period of time each day, or not eating at all? 😄 (Sorry for my ignorance on the subject, I've just started searching about it)
Wow! I used to eat constantly and binge on junk food every night. I would have thought you were crazy if you suggested fasting. Then a friend convinced me to just try the 24 hours fast (one meal in a day). Surprisingly it was quite easy. I did have some hunger pangs late in the evening but just quenched it with some warm herb tea. Now I do it often and it doesn't bother me at all. Other than an occasional piece of dark chocolate, I've totally lost interest in junk food. It's really amazing how it works. And yes I'm losing weight faster than I ever thought possible.
I am always appreciative of a whole month of fasting in Islam with only eating in a certain time window! It resets your body and is key to understanding how it is for those less fortunate to go without food for days! a win win situation ❤

We also have to understand that obesity is not normally caused by what we eat or whether or not we work out. Obesity is first and foremost about resolving trauma (see German New Medicine). When it's not about trauma, it's about stress in general, and/or it is about having a sedentary lifestyle. Fasting can certainly help, but we have to make sure we're also doing something about our emotional health and wellbeing.
If you’re suggesting that people who a traumatic event and that leads them to gain weight, that’s ridiculous. If you’re suggesting that somebody has a traumatic event that leads them to be stuck in a rut and because they can’t get out of their own way, they gain weight, that makes much more sense. Which one is it?

I think it’s more healthy to do it the way you native people have been doing. I don’t think it’s as healthy to obsess over daily or weekly 24 hour fast. I’ve always been very lean and healthy, had tons of energy because I was a runner and focused on my workouts, then my fasting length. But ever since I started following Dr. Mindy and other guru on UA-cam, I started implementing these weekly 24 hour or 30 hour fast followed by daily 16 to 20 hour fasts thought I was losing weight but I actually lost muscle. My metabolism slowed way down, and I have put on more weight in six months focusing on fasting than I have in 10 years. My workouts have suffered. I don’t have the energy or the strength to have. My grandfather was a doctor and he talked about fasting maybe once a month for 24 to 48 hours. so I think it’s beneficial every now and then to do a reset but I don’t think that this focus on daily fasting is healthy especially for women

I've been following Doctor Mindy for almost exactly 4 years now, and this may be one of the most succinctly helpful videos I've watched of her yet! I can't wait to dig deeper into 48 and 72 hour fasts, as I just completed my first intentional 42 hour fast and could have done 48 but chose not to at this particular time. If I had seen this video before I broke that fast, I most definitely would have extended to 48 hours, but I'm definitely doing it before the end of this month of September!🎉
Oh gosh, I remember transition all too well, even though 30 yrs ago!! . I went thru menopause early & my male Dr told me I couldn't be going thru menopause, I was too young. I relocated during this time & experiencing poor stress reaction, crying, "no brain", hot flashes. When I found a new Dr, she was flabbergasted that no test had been run & menopause was written all over me. It was a miserable time for me & such a poor reflection on me at work, I had no idea why I was so emotional. Your guidance is so valuable & your direction would have helped me so much!!
im at 42 hours of my 72 hours fasting . Since ive been maintaining intermittent fasting so its easy for me to fast but i wanted to go for 72 hours once a month, and I feel great 😅
I just did a 75hours fasting and I could keep going without any issues. I am beyond surprised of how easy was for me going my first time on fasting for longer than 16hours. I only had to take one electrolyte at the 50th hours and then another one at a 69hour. Felt amazing the whole time
YES! YES! YES! Thank you Dr Mindy 🙏🏻 Have been following you and introduced fasting into my life 3 years ago, primarily for cognitive impairment during menopause. Fasting does indeed work miracles, with the addition of eliminating gluten and sugar! I have fallen off track over the last few months and since Christmas my brain and body have crashed into some kind of heavy fatigue including vertigo. This has convinced me more than ever that those “treats” “occasionally” can and do throw you off track and cause devastating effects. It’s just not worth it! I once heard somewhere that “nothing tastes as good as healthy feels!” And I truly believe this. Excited to learn more from you in regards to the brain and holding off dementia 🙏🏻❤️
I've been doing this I lost 10lbs I'm removing lunch so I have breakfast at around 10am and then eat again at 4 pm. Drinking tea and water in between. My hours at work changed recently and I started having lunch again and I noticed my weight was going up fast, so I had to figure out how to change my IF to fit my new schedule. Weekends are my cheat days but I have noticed I get full a lot faster than before so I try not to over do it.
I’ve been doing one 24hr to 30hr fast per week followed by daily 16-20hr fasts. at the beginning, I was losing weight, so I thought. But I was actually losing muscle. And then I think that the fasting slowed my metabolism down so much so that I’ve actually put on weight doing this fasting. And I eat pretty healthy. The most fattening things I eat are avocados, nut butter, and raw almonds and raw walnuts. But I’ve put on a significant amount of weight since I started focusing on fasting more than exercise. I was way leaner, had more energy and looked and felt better when I was just doing 12 to 16 hour fast Well having more energy to go for a long run and do hit training. I’m afraid to stop fasting the way I have been doing because I’ve seen other women who were very lean. Once they stop doing intermittent fasting it takes them a year to get their metabolism back again.

Been slipping off my IF commitment since I started trying to lift weights a lot more - experimenting with eating in a bigger window - like 12 hours open for food. This video just re-inspired me about the brain clarity and keto feeling and the gut biome - I know this was aimed more at women, but so glad I listened. Going to reinvigorate and reset a bunch of things in my body this week and moving forward. Btw, I am now 3.5 yrs into IF and regular exercise - it's completely changed my life as a 40+ male. Besides being stronger, healthier, feeling better, my mental state has changed, and whereas I used to be prediabetic hba1c, I am now a 4.2 and also don't have mood swings. My past relationships would've likely benefited from a less moody me.

For losing 33 lbs, in addition to fasting I’m very conscious about my portion control, walk or workout every other day and most of all, when you go out for shopping, cut down on all sugar and carb products. Say no for cereals, candies, soft drinks, chocolates, slurpy , ice creams and pasta. In short, the main thing is “ Discipline “
Eat chia seeds for a power house of Fiber addition into your day and simply walking 10 mins after you eat is extremely beneficial on keeping insulin in check
@@surlespasdondinewith fasting the body switches metabollically to me able to use stored fat for fuel. Which actually keeps hunger at bay - as opposed to just cutting down. Plus making mew brain cells and clearing out "junk". This is what fasting is all about.
For people who have hormonal imbalance calorie deficit can cause the body to store fat. The deficit tells the body that it's under stress so it builds cortisol. This isn't true for everyone but be mindful.

I do a long term fasting before. Usually around 48-72 hour, but there was a time that I pushed it to about 156 hour fast. I try to do this every few years now if I can. Although I have a home electrolyte water with salt, potassium, and magnesium. No snacks at all or coffee. Only the electrolyte water during fast. My refeeds during fast breaks are junk though. I made sure I was measuring my capabilities and how my body's needs changed. It would be cool to see what the chemical changes happened inside too. I'm currently doing a 42-64 hour fast for about a month. With the same system I used before.
Excellent presentation and interview. An important matter that doesn't get sufficient attention is the balance between fasting and activity levels, especially intense exercise. I've had the best results maintaining a good level of day-to-day activity, ending fasts with intense workouts, followed by intense, healthy pig-outs until the rebuilding and re-fueling phase is is done. And it's important to count intense daily activities such as shoveling heavy snow as workouts. I also make it a point to treat them as workouts, warming up, then "attacking" them in high intensity interval fashion, and easing down.

During the eating window you could try consuming more calorie dense foods. Eat more in a short time interval. So at the end of the day, u r still reaching ur maintenance level calories, and hence wont lose any weight.
As someone with Hashimotos I have been made aware and in my case can attest it is true, fasting or going extremely low carbohydrates will cause reverse T3 to kick in which a mimic of T3 but works in the complete opposite way. 😂instead of converting T4 to energy which is what T3 does, reverse T3 stops the energy conversion, makes you feel tired, lacking energy and of course this can cause a slow and steady weight gain. I still do low carbohydrates, but instead of 20g maximum I aim for 30 - 35. Still pretty low but that bit extra works to give me the energy I need when T3 is messing with me and I use it to exercise as hard as I can😮 my diet is strict, no sugar no processed food, animal, protein and fats snd only organic rice or gluten free oats in tiny amounts to up the carbs. And I only eat raspberries and cucumbers 😊

Interesting! What do you think 10 year olds are stressed about?

Wow this is what my native ppl done for centuries already. It’s called sundancing it’s a four day fast once a year to reset our body and to connect .
@@HH-gv8mx We are born to fast. Our ancestors fasted. Fasting does not slow the metabolism. There’s tons of scientific studies that show this. What time do you eat?
Same. And lifting at the gym.
I do th same so that I can eat dinner with family or go 9ut for dinner with friends. My eating window is 6pm to 9pm. Wanting to control blood sugar and this is most effective
@@eileenbertsch5641 You should adapt this to your lifestyle. I dont mind going to my job while fasting. If you workout, I would eat then go to gym after 1-2 hour then eat another time when back home, to maximize energy during workout and keeping as much gains as possible by eating good source of proteins afterwards.

YES! YES! YES!
Thank you Dr Mindy 🙏🏻
Have been following you and introduced fasting into my life 3 years ago, primarily for cognitive impairment during menopause.
@@HH-gv8mx if you're losing muscle then you should do some weight lifting, pushups sit-ups etc. I'm not a workout person but I'm at the point where I think this will be beneficial for me along with my fasting.
Yes I started focusing more on longer fasts, which slowed my metabolism down a lot. Didn’t have the energy to go for long runs which kept me lean. Started fasting longer, ate more nut butters and fats like avocados, more weight trading .. gained 9lbs. Feel heavy and like my weight won’t budge. 😔 @@randomreviews1461
Just completed the Master Cleanse… easing back into eating slowly-- feeling great.
Just finished audiobook Fast Like a Girl, I’ve been fasting for a week and did a 24hr fast not thinking I should have eased into it over a few weeks, I felt the ketone high, I’m hooked…it was much easier than I thought it would be. Thank you Dr. Mindy for sharing Lanny’s story and reminding us we have to do the work to reap the benefits!!!

OMAD & no carbs/sugars
Eat chia seeds for a power house of Fiber addition into your day and simply walking 10 mins after you eat is extremely beneficial on keeping insulin in check
Cut out added sugar

For people who have hormonal imbalance calorie deficit can cause the body to store fat. The deficit tells the body that it's under stress so it builds cortisol. This isn't true for everyone but be mindful.
it's true but it's temporary for most people and works itself out in just 1-2 weeks. Keep fasting, friends!

Geniuinly asking! And i have tried to find this answer, but say for you 72 hour fast , how does your body know the difference between starvation and fasting? It depends on what you eat once you break your fast.

I've been tolerating a 36-hour fast once per week very well. I fast from Thursday evenings until Saturday mornings (begin after supper Thursday). So like 7:30 p.m. Thursday to 7:30 a.m. Saturday. I typically have little to no hunger all day Friday because I eat very low carb--no blood sugar spikes. If I do feel some grumbling in my tummy, I'll have a cup of hot green tea (plain). Otherwise, just water.
