I swear, one of these days someone is going to mention "Menards" to me and I will use this in some manner in conversation. The problem is, there are no Menards anywhere near me so it's not likely to come up in conversation anytime soon.

      @@electronerd These things really aren't all that expensive to produce, not even the higher end ones, they just shove a bunch of other tech in them (and a better screen, screens are expensive) and that runs the price up. Plus with how old the tech is now I'm not surprised at all to see one this cheap. Then the software development and marketing of the devices really ramps up the cost. But the hardware itself? Pretty cheap to make.

      @SianaGearz 3 роки тому +8

      Uhhhh so apart from the COMPLETE ELECTRONICS you wanna say. Liligo is an ESP32 and this is MediaTek, one of those feature phone all-in-one chips.
      I bought an identical MediaTek watch for $6 from China a few years ago because i knew Bunnie Huang was reverse engineering a similar chip, so i was hoping there would be some progress, but while i was tinkering with it, it died. Or was accidentally deaded by me. More like a long chain of accidents, including someone (not me) sitting down on it and then a long chain of attempted repairs (by me) which each broke it a little more. An actually open-source watch would be a huge head start, but there's no way i can afford a $30 device like that.

      @@SianaGearz haha fair point! The entire design of it other than the main board is identical though...
      I took a chance when ordering them because it wasn't clear whether the screen was an always-on energy efficient display or not... It is not (and in hindsight if it wasn't specified I should have assumed it wouldn't be...)
      Now I don't know what to do with them... They didn't come with usable firmware so unless I make my own or some community project forms around it, it's useless to me...

      Makes me wonder though, there's an abundance of cheap Nokia clone LCDs - monochrome, 84x48 and 96x68 varieties. Phones used to run them always-on and would still last a week and a half. Why isn't someone making a mass market smartwatch based on those?

    • @vicnet
      @vicnet 3 роки тому +2

      @@SianaGearz They do come pre-flashed with some demo code, but most of it is just a mock-up so other than telling the time it doesn't do anything useful. I haven't checked the status of the official repo in a while but I doubt I'll revisit them.
      Pebble was kinda "the" king of the always-on smartwatch before they got bought and killed by Fitbit. Now there's some Chinese brands like Amazfit that make always-on e-ink smartwatches but the idea of an open-source one really appealed to me...
      Ah well, good lesson in avoiding impulse purchases I guess... They didn't cost me much but I do feel bad every time I see them in my drawer 😂

As far as i can tell, they solder the antenna wire to the PCB before they try to install it into the enclosure, but they sometimes glue the antenna into the armband, so you can be out of luck.

    The chip inside of the headphones could very well be the same one that they use in a lot of other cheap Bluetooth devices. I have torn apart a Bluetooth robot and selfie trigger from Five Below, and there was a single chip inside with the same SMD package.

    Menards, for a few straight years from 2015 through at least 2017 sold a totally unbranded projector with built in DVD player on Black Friday for around $30, and I managed to buy one. It's cheaply built as expected, and the projection quality isn't that great. But, it's region free, can play MP4 files off a USB drive or SD card, and has a hidden feature... NES emulation. I was able to get a ROM of SMB to start, but the emulation was pretty bad and the particular projector that Menards sold that day covered up the two USB ports needed for game controllers.

    You laugh at that little handheld gaming console but my 4 year old is in LOVE with that. It fits his hands perfectly and the fact that it has so many games makes it perfect for long car trips. He only gets video games on car rides and about a few hours a week and he prefers that over my old gameboy DS. It's usually between that and the AT games sega handheld.
    All said, if anyone's looking for gift ideas for a 4/5 year old, keep that little machine in mind. It also has survived quite a few drops.

    do you think it would be possible to figure out the pinouts on those test pads for that NOAC?
    I'm assuming those test pads can be wired directly to the pins on a cartridge, and the screen doesn't look like it's using composite, so it would potentially be a very nice portable nes mod with a new 3D printed body

    Menards is great when you want Harbor Freight quality at near-Home Depot prices, with no chance of ever finding replacement parts.

    I'm astonished that for 12$ it has a proper removable battery, all the 100-200 dollar android powered smartwatches with fancy round OLED screens that I've ever taken apart use a flimsy ribbon cable for the battery, and on some it's even soldered directly to the main board!

    I had a smartwatch like this, $8 directly from china, just to tear it down too. Same melody on start, same OS, but a smaller display. It was a glorified bluetooth headset with tacked-on features, required a dubious app to make it run, the batttery lasted half a day, and the timekeeping was WAY off. I didnt expect anything for $8 though. Amazing that they could even produce and ship this item for a profit. Your watch was much higher quality, and even had a removable battery and SIM slot.

    1:57 I'm very sure that the unbranded version of that would just show a generic "Welcome" at that point instead of the Sylvania logo.
    4:46 I feel as though Sylvania is just licencing out their logo or just slapping it on whatever cheap items they find on alibaba.com that they think would sell.
    5:19 My dad tried the unbranded version of that, and it only supports 2G service.
    13:49 I detect an NES on a chip setup with an integrated bootleg cartridge.

    I've gotten one of these, they're all over alibaba, wish, etc. That sticker, when you removed the back cover, is actually covering up your speaker (and the grill is supposed to go over the speaker). I'm guessing someone just randomly slapped the sticker in, or due to the speaker actually being ridiculously loud, as a means to muffle the sound.

    I guess for an elderly person who does not like smart phones, or want to carry a phone on them period, then this could be a cheap solution long as it has 3G for something like AT&T's Cricket Wireless service just to have something on them in case of emergency.

    I bought those same earbuds. The "Roam" name is accurate, so long as you don't roam more than 5 feet from your sound source.
    Dropped one in a full sink (accidentally, honest!), dried it out, and it still worked fine.
    I no longer use them. Went back to wired ones that sound better.

    Oh god I can't believe it. Sylvania basically rebranded and/or reconfigured an existing smart watch design using the same MediaTek processor. I have one of my own. They're apparently somewhat hackable, but I haven't for the life of me been able to reflash it.
