Space Harrier was cool because the arcade version ran on 2x Motorola 68000CPUs with a Z80 operating as the sound controller. So backporting it to something with roughly the performance of the sound controller was a good feat...
I'll say this much about David Murray- he did the thing I asked if you could do for fun, the thing about putting an analog joystick on a C64 and proving it would work with an Atari 2600 the same way if anyone were crazy enough to write a game to take advantage of it. Though he just adapted a game port controller to the joy port and never implemented the up and down directions as extra buttons. That was super cool to see a proof.
The FREDDIE chip can be easily replaced by a bunch of 74HCT logic chips. There is a PCB with a footprint of DIL40 which has all the needed chips (SMD version obviously) on it. Of course, you may also use GAL/CPLD, as the equations are known.
Aside from the understandably limited color, it's easily the smoothest, best sounding and closest to arcade gameplay that I've seen from a pre 32X port.

I still have my XE from when I was a kid. I still have it in its original box. The box isn't in the best condition. I am missing the PSU, I just bought one on eBay after watching your video
I used an XEGS as a donor for a dual POKEY mod on my 130XE. It was an odd machine; a friend of mine had one, and I think it came with Missile Command built in and subLOGIC Flight Simulator 2 as a pack-in cartridge, both of which felt like weird choices; MC is terrible without a trackball, and FS2 was... let's be charitable, and just say it was not a particularly well optimised port. I don't recall ever playing a game that used the gun, but interestingly it did work like a light pen - LPENH and LPENV (memory locations 565 and 565) contain the coordinates.
