that's great for a beginner but as you move up, you need to play different at all times until you play like a beginner with a pro level skill set: loose, fast and always dynamic
Local 1/2 or 1/3 doesn't matter the opening size 3x or 10 x, if they have something they want to sew a flop with, they call. Either get no calls or 4 calls regardless of sizing. Omc even flat ak qq kk, wait for a safe flop and bet big. Very easy to exploit.
I found that a $6 open is usually too small in my local $1/2 casino cash game. 3x works fine online but in live games everyone wants to see the flop. Other than that great info Jonathan!
That is so true...generally a $10 to even $15 is standard opening raise...because of this these tables player much bigger than online tables where 3x is a standard raise.
I thought that way too. My local $1/$2 the open is generally $10-$12. I used to always open $12 + $2 for each limper up to 2 limiters, or $3 per limper if 3+ ($16 open after 2 limpers, $24 open for 4 limpers) HOWEVER, a few months ago I wanted to test my theory. I player two sessions back to back, one with the above strategy and the other with a starting side of $7. I did the same calculation for limpers, but I went from 6BBs to 3.5 BBs and I found I got basically the same amount of folds vs calls. Been about 3 months since I implemented the strategy and I see almost no difference in the calls vs folds, but now I get more postflop play which is where I want to be.
@@cjwhite8542 The tradeoff in some of those games is you can open for 30 and get 2+ callers. If you know you're getting calls, you want as much money possible in the pot w/premiums. Guess it depends how you want to play it.

My second question concerns playing live. I haven’t played live in a few years mostly play online (10 - 20 hours a week). When you play online you always see how much money is in the pot and that affects my bet sizing. When playing live I often don’t track exactly how much money is in the pot. I’m guessing that is important information and is something to track in the hands you are playing. Thanks again for all you content, TK
In the Toledo and Detroit area. Most players are either tight or loose. You never mentioned he probably could of had 2 pair on the board instead of the nuts. Against the nuts, ill consider it very unlikely from big blind position. Plus him just calling, instead of a 3 bet tells you his hand very likely weak. Poker is a game of Probability. Cards and styles alike. Also I would raised the 88's to $15 try get ppl to fold marginal hands so you're more likely up against AK AQ, Q10, K10, and which would give you the win. Force them to play a certain style, then exploit 💯 Also, if he had the nuts the player would 3 bet, he would also atleast bet the draws. Unless you're up against the ultra passive player (calling station) I find them the scariest to play.

Your chances to hit a flush with an off suit hand is about 1% where as a suited hand gives you about 4%...doesn’t seem like a huge difference but if you put it into context you’re about 4 times more likely to hit a flush
Very good video. The bit about static ranges is dead-on. So many players have identical ranges from every position and that makes them beyond easy to read, range and exploit. On the hand with the 88 on 9/8/5/4 with 2 flush draws (13:30) - the turn bet needs to be larger if you want to set up a reasonably sized river shove. You'll want to overbet many rivers, with both your nutted hands and missed draws. On the hand with flopped quad 7's, IMO the best street to get value is the flop so I really don't like the check here. I'd bet small with my entire range and build the pot, getting called by all pairs, all gutshots, all J's and probably many A-high and even KQ with any backdoor flush draws. You hope the villain picks up perceived equity on the turn and set up a big hand. If he doesn't pick up something decent, you aren't getting much more out of the hand anyway.
The key issue I find is if you open 3x BB, at least at the tables I play literally 80% of players will call and you have no idea where you stand in the pot
I'm a bit confused - at15:02 you say he probably doesn't have a random QJ and then at 17:02 you say if he shoves he's either going to have QJ or a flush
I feel in the example with the 88, I would likely re raise vs a turn CR. If for example, the BB CR to 70 and we call, the pot would be $171 with $115 stacks left. The BB would then have really one of two choices- shove or check the river. If he was on a missed draw and he checks, we're not getting more money from him. If he shoves, the problem is that on a lot of rivers, we are not going to know if we should call off or not. There is a good chance we will make an incorrect fold or call. The Ten club is a good example of this. did he out draw us or is he just repping a hand that beats us? I don't see many players at this level CRing a naked top pair without a draw starting at 100bb deep so making the 3! saves us from missing value on the river or making an error on the river.

On the quad 7s you said checking the flop makes your hand look weak or really strong. If they read it as weak isn’t that something we’re wanting from our opponent?

I can give you a lot of examples but the main idea is to understand where i played bad poker??? Another day was at PokerStars. In this day i lost a lot of money because of the kicker. I had KJ and the vilan gains with AJ. 52 cards and I lost because i had a good hand (top pair) but I lost because the kicker. And this happened everytime I disput a hand. Very strange things or very strange bad luck!!!!
Exactly. There is never a clear cut answer. Everyone just had to play their own comfortable style and have a good sense of their opponent and the hand. A board like this in the video is very scary especially if they go all-in or raise alot. Flush or straight crushes you here and as we all know anything can happen in poker. If they check it after the river then your alot safer. I would probably just check and go to showdown with a really good feeling that I'll win or I may raise a little depending on how the game us going or the opponent.
Is that bad getting eight callers with 88? when you get the set, the implied odds and chances to stack someone greatly increases. We can say the same about Ax suited making the flush, or when you make a KJT straight with AQ vs some player with Q9. What if they squeeze? if you're going to fold your hand, you lose less money with a smaller squeeze. If you are calling, you have better implied odds. If you reraising for value, well... you are probably getting a bigger pot with more chips against a squeeze vs multiple callers.

As always thanks for your insight. I have 2 different questions (one for online and one for live). One thing I took out of this video is to change your hand range based on position. Obviously this makes sense and I need to “grow” in this area. I generally play NL 10 6 handed. I don’t use a HUD but I’m sure my VPIP is too high (improving in this area). I often find little to no aggression at some of these tables, in those cases I often don’t consider position and raise from any position (KQ off, A 10 off, etc) until I get resisitence and start getting 3 bets. On a tight table is it ok to not consider position as much with opening raises until you start getting 3 bet?
Are the raises the same for live casino play? Because in live casino I have noticed there are way more players usually in pots as there are less hands per hour, so the standard I see there is 8$ raise preflop rather than 6
Definitely true. No one drove to a casino and sat down after waiting around for an open table to fold to $6. Most people will see flops unless there’s a large 3bet if they’ve decided to play the hand already.
I have noticed that certain "groups" of people fall in to certain tendencies. I do mean race, image and age. At least here at the local casino/charity rooms I can get a decent read on somebody based on race/ethnicity. Arabs=loose and aggressive very likely to tilt or go on huge runs. Blacks= tighter less likely to punt their stack off. I know in out PC culture this may sound unacceptable but its interesting data.

The thing about "exploiting your opponents weakness". This is not a fist fight. Anyone can beat you with 2 cards. You gotta respect your opponents, look for opportunities to bluff. And if you are card dead nothing will help
If you are card dead, and your opponents assume you are only playing the nuts, your cards matter much less. Of course, anyone can win any individual hand, but poker is a long-run game.

Hello Jonathan, for example i had AJ of hearts and i raised. One player call. The flop comes A 10 A. I made all in and i lost against A K unsuited. Is this possible? Just unlucky, dude. Like most other people, we would've gotten in good with that. Unless there was tells for example the person is very tight and never played a hand for almost an hour and called your raises, I would tread lightly. How you win if you have the best possible hand on the flop lets say its flush with an ace the best possible flush and somehow this other dude gets full house on the river and no matter how much you raise he calls like he is 100 % sure he will get his full house and what happens I go with almost all of my stack in that pot and he calls and he gets full house and he wins . I have a question. I've been very interested on poker lately and have watched all I can on poker here on UA-cam. After getting a better understanding of different strategies I've notice a huge difference in my game. But the sad thing is that its illegal to play poker in my state so I've been playing none cash games but every session I've been way up usually 3x my buy in. But I'm not sure if thats very comparable to real cash games? I do play it as if it was real money though I do know other players do not. Should I expect much harder games in my first cash games if my state ever gets out of the stone age? I honesty feel like I could dominate games if I could actually gamble. I absolutely love the idea of making a living sitting at my pc doing something I enjoy
@@mattm3492 try ignition / bovada. The only downside is players are anonymous so it can be hard to get a read on people, but, it's still useful for practicing bet sizing and fun.

No reason to worry. Poker requires an extraordinary amount of luck, followed by extraordinary amount of discipline. Most people who play are degenerate gamblers and don't have of prayer of being winners long-term. Go to any poker room in the country and pay attention 80% of the people leaving are leaving with less money than they came 15% git lucky to be winning and 5% actually have the tools and luck to win.
Another examples: I held 5 6 suited at cash games . The flop cames 9 5 6 . I was very happy. I bet mores than 50 € and I received a call from one player. The turn comes a 3 and I bet another big amount of money. The vilan calls!!! And the River comes another 9. I check for precaution the other play check and shows J 9 and win a pot of 200 euros. This is unbelievable!!! Another example: I held 8 8 and I raise for 15 € . One player paid my bet and the flop comes 8 3 J . I go all in with a set of 8. I bet about 150€ and the other plays called with Q 8 and I lost because the Turn brings a Queen, and the River brings another Queen. I lost a lot of money because someone transformed a pair into a full house. This his a robery, don’t you think?
Interesting hands and good analysis. But why do you repeat yourself so often? Giving the same message once in other words seems OK. But repeating and repeating seven times the same message makes no sense to me. If I didn't understand or want to hear again what you were saying: I rewind! And hearing the same message over and over and over and over and over again makes me wonder why you do that. PS: telling that you want to get more money in the pot, having the nuts, followed by checking is not very consistent. .

Another example I have 10 5 suited and the flop brings me two pairs. I thought that I was winning, but no. The other player had J 5 and wins !!!

You lost because he had AK over your AJ. You both matched on the A but he beat you with the K as its higher than a J

How you win if you have the best possible hand on the flop lets say its flush with an ace the best possible flush and somehow this other dude gets full house on the river and no matter how much you raise he calls like he is 100 % sure he will get his full house and what happens I go with almost all of my stack in that pot and he calls and he gets full house and he wins . This happened to me way too much . I cant believe it .how is it possible ??

I have a question. I've been very interested on poker lately and have watched all I can on poker here on UA-cam. After getting a better understanding of different strategies I've notice a huge difference in my game. But the sad thing is that its illegal to play poker in my state so I've been playing none cash games but every session I've been way up usually 3x my buy in. But I'm not sure if thats very comparable to real cash games? I do play it as if it was real money though I do know other players do not. Should I expect much harder games in my first cash games if my state ever gets out of the stone age? I honesty feel like I could dominate games if I could actually gamble. I absolutely love the idea of making a living sitting at my pc doing something I enjoy

play money is nothing like real money. completely different game in every way.
@@mattm3492 try ignition / bovada. The only downside is players are anonymous so it can be hard to get a read on people, but, it's still useful for practicing bet sizing and fun.

No reason to worry. Poker requires an extraordinary amount of luck, followed by extraordinary amount of discipline. Most people who play are degenerate gamblers and don't have of prayer of being winners long-term. Another examples: I held 5 6 suited at cash games . The flop cames 9 5 6 . I was very happy. I bet mores than 50 € and I received a call from one player. The turn comes a 3 and I bet another big amount of money. The vilan calls!!! And the River comes another 9. I check for precaution the other play check and shows J 9 and win a pot of 200 euros. This is unbelievable!!! Another example: I held 8 8 and I raise for 15 € . One player paid my bet and the flop comes 8 3 J . I go all in with a set of 8. I bet about 150€ and the other plays called with Q 8 and I lost because the Turn brings a Queen, and the River brings another Queen. I lost a lot of money because someone transformed a pair into a full house. This his a robery, don’t you think?

But why do you repeat yourself so often? Giving the same message once in other words seems OK. But repeating and repeating seven times the same message makes no sense to me. If I didn't understand or want to hear again what you were saying: I rewind! And hearing the same message over and over and over and over and over again makes me wonder why you do that.
PS: telling that you want to get more money in the pot, having the nuts, followed by checking is not very consistent.
