  • I explain a simple way to figure out the number of calories on keto you should eat.
    Timestamps:
0:00 How to figure out the amount of calories on keto you should eat
1:40 If you use your basal metabolic rate (BMR) you think this simple formula should work, right?
3:43 This is how to determine how many calories on keto is right for you
I frequently am asked, how many calories on keto is the right amount? I’ll explain, but first I’ll give an example of what doesn’t work despite popular wisdom.
I’ll start by giving examples of how much fat people are carrying around:
A fit woman, 140 pounds, 23 percent body fat, or 32.3 pounds of fat for a potential 113,050 calories of energy. If she’s obese, same weight but 39 percent body fat, she’ll have almost 55 pounds of fat or a potential 191,000 calories of energy.
A fit man, 170 pounds, 16 percent body fat, 27.2 pounds of fat, or just under 100,000 calories of potential energy. The same weight man who’s obese will have nearly 46 pounds of body fat or over 160,000 calories of potential energy.
If you use the basal metabolic rate (BMR), which is the number of calories your body needs simply to do its job, let’s say it’s 2,000 a day. All you have to do is eat 500 fewer calories per day and in 7 days you should lose one pound of fat since it’s 3,500 calories. Correct?
Only it doesn’t work this way! There are too many variables such as your age, your thyroid function, whether you have insulin resistance, exercise, stress, sleep quality, and so on. Or you may be eating so much dietary fat that it burns instead of your body fat, especially if you’re in ketosis (fat-burning mode). The more times you’ve dieted, the more your metabolism can slow down. And the type of calories you consume will influence your hormones.
If you have body problems like an autoimmune condition or inflammation, these are more variables affecting weight loss.
Instead of starting by a number of calories, try this instead:
    Eat keto
At first, eat three meals a day but eliminate snacks
Then if you are satisfied after a meal, not hungry or stuffed, reduce to two meals a day
Gradually move to one meal a day (OMAD)
Many people meet their goals on OMAD, especially those over 40 or 50, but if you don’t then go to one meal every other day. The key is to feel satisfied. If you can consistently feel satisfied after a meal, then that is the correct amount of calories for you to eat. You can enhance things by adding better sleep, more exercise, and nutrients.
Figure out how many calories on keto is right for you in this way, and you’ll be set to go.

You need to be mindful what you eat. Discipline helps reach the goal. Eating every other day is another fancy way to reduce your calories! But if you don't know how much is in the meal, you willllll overeat. I lost 140 lbs and believe me, that's an unbreakable rule! It is important to be mindful of stresses as they can cause overeating, but your body can't make fat out of thin air!
      Mind those calories!

@@oldtymer9106 how you feel will vary from person to person in the beginning depending on how carb heavy your diet was. For me, I never cared much for sweets so when I went low carb, I didn't get all the symptoms of "keto flu." Before keto, I would eat a meal and knock out cold immediately after. I slept most of the day. My brain was foggy, I was tired all the time. That all went away on keto and intermittent fasting. I had loads of energy, mental clarity. The only issue I had was insomnia on keto.

@@oldtymer9106 oh and I lost 47 pounds in two months without exercising or restricting calories. My A1C went from a 7 down to 5.8, my fatty liver improved. All my markers got better. Cholesterol went up, but that's not really a big deal.

    • @NikoBellaKhouf
      @NikoBellaKhouf 3 роки тому +3

@@AO-wg9ne well every dangerous marker went down or moved in a better direction. High cholesterol isn't dangerous. High blood sugar does the most damage to every cell in your body. Plus when you lose a lot of weight fast, it's normal for your cholesterol to shoot up high because part of the stored fat molecule is burned as fuel and the rest is cholesterol. The cholesterol part is supposed to be processed with your bile but if you don't have enough, you won't eliminate the excess cholesterol quick enough. It'll balance out eventually.

After a few months of struggling on this diet I am starting to feel the tide turn with my health. I can't wait to feel good all the time. All of my joints used to be inflamed and they aren't anymore. I had intense fatigue, sometimes feeling like my body needed to sink into the bed, I was so exhausted. Now I can feel myself starting to perk up energy-wise. My feet were painful and I'd hobble around in the morning to get them to hopefully feel better. Now one foot is pain free and the other foot has pain in only half the foot. I actually felt like lifting weights the other day. I used to enjoy doing that when I had more energy. The key change for me was embracing the green drink so I could get in more veggies every day. I have been also using the colostrum and feel that is making a difference. Thank you Dr Berg for sharing your knowledge. What a difference you are making for people like me.

@ Arijate I haven't been tracking for 15 months and my weight has fluctuated up and down the same 5lbs. If are eating foods that don't spike insulin, your body will function the way it is supposed to, even if you are eating a surplus of calories. What you should worry about is eating too FEW calories. When I started keto I UPPED my calories by 400 from what I was told to do by the fitness gurus and BMI calculators. I dropped the weight like crazy. I bet you that if I was eating carb crap and upped those same calories, I would not have dropped the pounds like that.

      @Ganstaz003 Рік тому

And Keto also isn't necessary whatsoever in absolutely anyway shape or form to lose weight or even be healthy. In fact, I'd argue life is better when you can eat everything in moderation rather than totally deprive yourself from the beauty the world has to offer.
If you can't eat however much you want or whenever you want on keto, it makes keto absolutely utterly and 100% useless because the only thing that'll ever persuade me to go keto is if I am allowed to eat as much tasty fatty foods (like heavy cream) as I want. Otherwise, I can still lose weight simply by following a calorie deficit while also being able to eat whatever I want (in the correct portion).
The keto trade-off simply is not worth it to me or many other people. Why bother going keto and depriving yourself from many tasty foods, when you (even on keto) can't eat the foods you are allowed to eat, as much as you want, right? Well guess what, that applies for a standard diet too, except you can eat whatever you want (in the correct portion unlike on keto) and still lose weight like on keto.
So thanks for proving keto is just basically useless and pointless and provides 0 advantage over a standard balanced diet consisting of calorie deficit.

He doesn't have a gallbladder and I have hypothyroid, so it's a little slower going for me, but I'm ok with that. Never a calorie counted and many pounds/inches slowly lost for us both. Trying to avoid saggy skin from rapid loss. We are satisfied at every meal instead of having expanding foods like bread/pasta/potatoes to push us past. We notice the difference on cheat days and they are farther and fewer between now. We eat whole foods mostly and I enjoy cooking a lot more. Thank you Dr. Berg for all of your info!

I used to count calories and it was dreadfully stressful. I am not counting calories and I feel free. I look at the calories of something before eating and I estimate in my head. I’ve went years and years with counting calories during every single diet I’ve done.
Now I’m focused more on just feeling satisfied with how I feel and I eat only when I am hungry. I was at 145 when I started like a week ago and I’m at 137 now and feel amazing. I have in ketosis the whole time. I’m trying to make it to full on ketosis. I am at the moderate 4.0 on my ketosis strips.
I have been putting in more fats but keeping an eye on calories. I have no idea how much calories I’m eating but I know it’s not too much or too little. But I love what I’m doing by not counting calories because I get too overwhelmed frustrated when I do count.
Do what is best for you.

I did an elimination diet for several weeks and discovered that my body doesn't do well with vegetables except for fermented ones. I had good success with keto, but still had a lot of health issues. So my next step after Keto/IF/OMAD was a more carnivore diet. I can hardly keep up with the health benefits! I have no more heartburn at all; my digestion is perfect- no more constipation; ALL bloating has subsided; my skin is clearer, more youthful, and heals from wounds faster; more significant weightloss; BETTER SLEEP; and it completed the healing of (or nearly healed) many of the other ailments that I couldn't quite accomplish fully with only keto- such as chronic inflammation, back pain, heavy periods, fibroids, energy, agility, stamina, PCOS, insulin resistance (and probably diabetes), and high blood pressure. Any time I eat vegetables now (that aren't fermented) my body rejects it in some way. Not sure why some people have issues with this and some don't, but I am grateful to finally be healthy.

I usually manage to get around 1500 calories but sometimes (usually around the second week of restarting keto) I can barely eat anything. I found that to be normal and short-lasting as my appetite usually comes back about a week later. I keep the ratio of 5 to 10% carbs, 20 to 25% protein, and around 75% fat. This works for me as I managed to lose about 10 kg (it would be much more if I had the willpower :D) so I hope that it will work for you too. Good luck on your low-carb journey!

I guess we are all different. I'm frustrated I can't do a 7 or 14 day fast due to a medical condition:( anyway, my point for replying is that you risk limiting your nutrient intake when you do one meal vs two or three smaller meals. You may have an underlying condition preventing fat loss or you haven't faught your platue long enough. Finally, I personally would give priority over my nutrient intake anyday vs a inrelivent number from a scale which takes me to another point. Are you using a scale? Your body comp may be changing. I.e 100 + 25 fat or 110+ 15 fat will both show 125 on the scale. The scale is a tool but not a reliable one so don't depend on it. Wanna hear something shocking? You mentally think you are stalling when physiologically you aren't. I bet you didn't think of that, don't stop doing what you are doing, keep taking care of your health. Have a good life.

I’m not going for an end weight goal, but I do have a body fat % goal of under 15%.
One challenge I’ve had with my overall weight loss has been loss of lean muscle mass and loose hanging skin. I’m now 5 months into a strength training regimen of 4-5 days a week and wow, what a difference this makes in what I see in the mirror. The scale hasn’t reflected much change, but it’s clear that my body fat percentage has dropped by quite a few points, and I know that adding more lean muscle mass also helps to burn more body fat.
I feel that people like myself that have a lot of weight to lose would greatly benefit from adding strength training to their plans...

3.5 years on Keto ..now doing OMAD and a 48 hour fast twice a month..I'm happy with the weight loss actually 100 Lbs in the first year and all the loose skin I was so sure would be there to remind me that i was once fat is SLOWLY going away ..I've thought real hard for over a year now that if i would do OMEOD [one meal every other day] this would help speed things up but I'm so scared to screw things up..Im today 40 hours into my 48 hour fast Glucose is 63 and Ketones at 5.4 I will end my fast with a bike ride or a 30 min HIIT's ...Should I leave good enough alone ? or push the envelope ? At 5'8" I was 268 lbs in Jan of 2016 today I'm 164 Lbs still have love handles and loose skin in my stomach area I never believed the BMI charts on the internet but I guess I really should be around 150 Lbs Not sure if i will ever get there but It wont be for not trying I told my self in 2016 I will give it my all for 5 years to try to get to 10% body fat...I'm 70 % of the way there and still have almost a year and 4 month to go so I'm not in a desperate situation but I'm wanting to do the OMEOD .
