- I explain a simple way to figure out the number of calories on keto you should eat.
Timestamps:
0:00 How to figure out the amount of calories on keto you should eat
1:40 If you use your basal metabolic rate (BMR) you think this simple formula should work, right?
3:43 This is how to determine how many calories on keto is right for you
I frequently am asked, how many calories on keto is the right amount? I’ll explain, but first I’ll give an example of what doesn’t work despite popular wisdom.
I’ll start by giving examples of how much fat people are carrying around:
A fit woman, 140 pounds, 23 percent body fat, or 32.3 pounds of fat for a potential 113,050 calories of energy. If she’s obese, same weight but 39 percent body fat, she’ll have almost 55 pounds of fat or a potential 191,000 calories of energy.
A fit man, 170 pounds, 16 percent body fat, 27.2 pounds of fat, or just under 100,000 calories of potential energy. The same weight man who’s obese will have nearly 46 pounds of body fat or over 160,000 calories of potential energy.
If you use the basal metabolic rate (BMR), which is the number of calories your body needs simply to do its job, let’s say it’s 2,000 a day. All you have to do is eat 500 fewer calories per day and in 7 days you should lose one pound of fat since it’s 3,500 calories. Correct?
Only it doesn’t work this way! There are too many variables such as your age, your thyroid function, whether you have insulin resistance, exercise, stress, sleep quality, and so on. Or you may be eating so much dietary fat that it burns instead of your body fat, especially if you’re in ketosis (fat-burning mode). The more times you’ve dieted, the more your metabolism can slow down. And the type of calories you consume will influence your hormones.
If you have body problems like an autoimmune condition or inflammation, these are more variables affecting weight loss.
Instead of starting by a number of calories, try this instead:
Eat keto
At first, eat three meals a day but eliminate snacks
Then if you are satisfied after a meal, not hungry or stuffed, reduce to two meals a day
Gradually move to one meal a day (OMAD)
Many people meet their goals on OMAD, especially those over 40 or 50, but if you don’t then go to one meal every other day. The key is to feel satisfied. If you can consistently feel satisfied after a meal, then that is the correct amount of calories for you to eat. You can enhance things by adding better sleep, more exercise, and nutrients.
Figure out how many calories on keto is right for you in this way, and you’ll be set to go.

Did you know there’s a very simple way to determine how many calories on keto is right for you?
People: You're fat
Me: I carry a lot of potential energy
Yes, I like your way of saying it! ;c) I, also, am carrying much potential energy!
Lmao!
Me too.
@Beck W Our doctor Berg is very careful calling people Fat. Hey! I don't blame him.
👍👍 @David B - going to point this out to my DR! 😄
This man is a genius. His ability to explain complex things in the simplest way ever. I am forever grateful for your teachings Dr. Berg.
Hes a great man
Journey2Zee I agree! I learn so much from his videos!
Foreals!
He's influenced and taught and transformed the life of many. Hats off sir.
You need to be mindful what you eat. Discipline helps reach the goal. Eating every other day is another fancy way to reduce your calories! But if you don't know how much is in the meal, you willllll overeat. I lost 140 lbs and believe me, that's an unbreakable rule! It is important to be mindful of stresses as they can cause overeating, but your body can't make fat out of thin air!
Mind those calories!
I love love love that you always jump right to the point. No annoying intro telling us to subscribe or hit like. Just straight up info from beginning to end. You have no idea how much I appreciate that.
Me too. One guy eckberg spends 20 minutes to tell you the 10 best keto foods.
Girl you have so much potential........ energy
It's a lot better to hear than saying girl you are obese/fat ... LOL!!!

Unfortunately Dr Berg has too many videos and most of his links don't work anymore. Maintenance is a big task for an online presence 😃. Calculator is one of those things...
@@gus_smith thats because thats all they can base it on.
So glad you addressed this and can’t wait for the keto calculator!
I always said that I have enough calories to power me to the moon and back. Well Dr. Berg proved it
"Fly me to the moon..." you're a song how cute:)
No cursed words, no drama, concise..... this is good.
My brother asked me how I lost so much weight so fast...
I told him all I eat now is fat!
With the way you going with this sounded like a google add😄at first i thought “oh there u go another google add🤦🏻♂️”,then i realized it’s a legit comment
I haven't gone keto yet. How does it feel? How do you feel?
@@oldtymer9106 how you feel will vary from person to person in the beginning depending on how carb heavy your diet was. For me, I never cared much for sweets so when I went low carb, I didn't get all the symptoms of "keto flu." Before keto, I would eat a meal and knock out cold immediately after. I slept most of the day. My brain was foggy, I was tired all the time. That all went away on keto and intermittent fasting. I had loads of energy, mental clarity. The only issue I had was insomnia on keto.
@@oldtymer9106 oh and I lost 47 pounds in two months without exercising or restricting calories. My A1C went from a 7 down to 5.8, my fatty liver improved. All my markers got better. Cholesterol went up, but that's not really a big deal.
@@AO-wg9ne well every dangerous marker went down or moved in a better direction. High cholesterol isn't dangerous. High blood sugar does the most damage to every cell in your body. Plus when you lose a lot of weight fast, it's normal for your cholesterol to shoot up high because part of the stored fat molecule is burned as fuel and the rest is cholesterol. The cholesterol part is supposed to be processed with your bile but if you don't have enough, you won't eliminate the excess cholesterol quick enough. It'll balance out eventually.
After a few months of struggling on this diet I am starting to feel the tide turn with my health. I can't wait to feel good all the time. All of my joints used to be inflamed and they aren't anymore. I had intense fatigue, sometimes feeling like my body needed to sink into the bed, I was so exhausted. Now I can feel myself starting to perk up energy-wise. My feet were painful and I'd hobble around in the morning to get them to hopefully feel better. Now one foot is pain free and the other foot has pain in only half the foot. I actually felt like lifting weights the other day. I used to enjoy doing that when I had more energy. The key change for me was embracing the green drink so I could get in more veggies every day. I have been also using the colostrum and feel that is making a difference. Thank you Dr Berg for sharing your knowledge. What a difference you are making for people like me.
Another great video taking a complex question and making it easy to understand. I started keto a few weeks ago after a ketoacidosis event (Type 1 Diabetic) and have moved to OMAD. After a few days, it now seems normal - no hunger during the fasting periods and lots of energy! Thanks so much for making keto easy to understand!
I'm so glad I found this channel.
Love including the consideration to sleep and stress. People so often forget these essential elements that can be optimised!
I love your thumbnails! They always keep me interested!
I really like these consolidated information videos, especially for newbies to keto/if/omad. Wish I could "like" this twice. Can't wait for the calculator and to see you at the Summit next week!!!
Got it. Keto/IF and don't count calories. Couldn't get any simpler.
Eat whole foods no labels to read.
NOOO if you’re in a calorie surplus even on keto how would you lose weight
@@creamofthecrop5868 Yes, but if you are not in a calorific surplus you WILL! Try eating OMEOD and walking every meal time instead of eating. You will lose weight. Fat poundage. No calorie counting.
@ Arijate I haven't been tracking for 15 months and my weight has fluctuated up and down the same 5lbs. If are eating foods that don't spike insulin, your body will function the way it is supposed to, even if you are eating a surplus of calories. What you should worry about is eating too FEW calories. When I started keto I UPPED my calories by 400 from what I was told to do by the fitness gurus and BMI calculators. I dropped the weight like crazy. I bet you that if I was eating carb crap and upped those same calories, I would not have dropped the pounds like that.

Thank you dr berg!! i lost 1.7 kilo and 5 cm from my belly in 10 days only 😭 i don't believe it!!! I'm so happy 🙏🙏 you are the best doctor ever! Thank you again ♡♡
Thank u Dr berg
U have helped me a lot
Within 1 week of intermittent fasting I have started to lose weight. My biggest concern was my early morning fasting blood glucose. It has been around 130 for last 2 years. I was labelled pre diabetic.
I did everything, but I failed. Until last week when I tried intermittent fasting and omad. I was fearful and skeptical. But to my surprise my fasting blood sugar has come down to 78. I feel about 10 years younger. Can continue this for my whole life. Lots of prayers and love for you Dr berg.
Your explanation really helped me understand “burning calories” I never truly knew what that meant until now, thank you for that
Ty Dr. Berg. Great information and I’m loving your interactive white board. 😃

What a great idea!
Great video! Sticking with a well balanced keto approach is best! Keto isn’t a license to eat whatever, whenever!
Perfect 😊!
took me a year to realize that lol, u lose weight at first eating low carb but after a while calories or the amount of food u eat will determine weight loss.
what do you consider a well balanced keto approach ?
And Keto also isn't necessary whatsoever in absolutely anyway shape or form to lose weight or even be healthy. In fact, I'd argue life is better when you can eat everything in moderation rather than totally deprive yourself from the beauty the world has to offer.
If you can't eat however much you want or whenever you want on keto, it makes keto absolutely utterly and 100% useless because the only thing that'll ever persuade me to go keto is if I am allowed to eat as much tasty fatty foods (like heavy cream) as I want. Otherwise, I can still lose weight simply by following a calorie deficit while also being able to eat whatever I want (in the correct portion).
The keto trade-off simply is not worth it to me or many other people. Why bother going keto and depriving yourself from many tasty foods, when you (even on keto) can't eat the foods you are allowed to eat, as much as you want, right? Well guess what, that applies for a standard diet too, except you can eat whatever you want (in the correct portion unlike on keto) and still lose weight like on keto.
So thanks for proving keto is just basically useless and pointless and provides 0 advantage over a standard balanced diet consisting of calorie deficit.
Can't wait for the calculator! My husband and I have been doing keto off and on (mostly on) for a more than a few months now and we love the way it makes us feel. He doesn't have a gallbladder and I have hypothyroid, so it's a little slower going for me, but I'm ok with that. Never a calorie counted and many pounds/inches slowly lost for us both. Trying to avoid saggy skin from rapid loss. We are satisfied at every meal instead of having expanding foods like bread/pasta/potatoes to push us past. We notice the difference on cheat days and they are farther and fewer between now. We eat whole foods mostly and I enjoy cooking a lot more. Thank you Dr. Berg for all of your info!
Doc -- GREAT job on this video. I've watched over 50 videos or more from you and your friendly contemporaries concerning IF, Keto, weight loss, diet, etc: Thomas Delauer, Dr. Jason Fung, etc. ....and this is one of the best videos thus far.

You're sharing such awesome and educating content..Thank you making our lives better and because this is free, I would say you are working for a social cause..Kudos!
Great vid, Dr. Berg! Am 68, female, Keto since Oct. 2018, lost 'about' 30lbs but stalled since Apr. 2019! BK has averaged 1.5 and BG is now averaging 95 (before Keto it was always over 100). Looking at this circle and based on symptoms, I probably am also dealing with IR, hypothyroid, stress, insomnia, history of yo-yo diets, who knows what else. Clothes are loose and I feel better overall so even if I don't lose more I'll still be happy and Keto on for life and health! :D

Looking forward to the calculator, Dr. Berg. Thanks for everything you do!
I used to count calories and it was dreadfully stressful. I am not counting calories and I feel free. I look at the calories of something before eating and I estimate in my head. I’ve went years and years with counting calories during every single diet I’ve done.
Now I’m focused more on just feeling satisfied with how I feel and I eat only when I am hungry. I was at 145 when I started like a week ago and I’m at 137 now and feel amazing. I have in ketosis the whole time. I’m trying to make it to full on ketosis. I am at the moderate 4.0 on my ketosis strips.
I have been putting in more fats but keeping an eye on calories. I have no idea how much calories I’m eating but I know it’s not too much or too little. But I love what I’m doing by not counting calories because I get too overwhelmed frustrated when I do count.
Do what is best for you.

Makes more sense to me now that I have been doing keto for a while. Pieces of the puzzle are starting to fit into place.
I need to learn more about hormones. I'm like a faulty thermostat. I'm cold one minute and literally hot the next. I'm past menopause and I never had hot flashes when I was going through natural menopause. I'm not on any HRT now or ever before. These symptoms are very annoying. I take supplements but often feel like I'm running in circles.

Very thankful for all of your knowledge!
100000 calories thats such a cool number to think about. thanks! I would have never thought the math out like that!
I did an elimination diet for several weeks and discovered that my body doesn't do well with vegetables except for fermented ones. I had good success with keto, but still had a lot of health issues. So my next step after Keto/IF/OMAD was a more carnivore diet. I can hardly keep up with the health benefits! I have no more heartburn at all; my digestion is perfect- no more constipation; ALL bloating has subsided; my skin is clearer, more youthful, and heals from wounds faster; more significant weightloss; BETTER SLEEP; and it completed the healing of (or nearly healed) many of the other ailments that I couldn't quite accomplish fully with only keto- such as chronic inflammation, back pain, heavy periods, fibroids, energy, agility, stamina, PCOS, insulin resistance (and probably diabetes), and high blood pressure. Any time I eat vegetables now (that aren't fermented) my body rejects it in some way. Not sure why some people have issues with this and some don't, but I am grateful to finally be healthy.
Spring Hellams I
Thanks for your comment. I think I’ll try this. I haven’t been losing weight even though I do OMAD, which is mainly a meal of veg and protein. I might just get rid of the veggies for a while. Thanks

I'm glad you talked about this. Many say we should not count calories. I totally disagree. You should at least know your needs first to know how to follow your diet. Thank you!
I love Dr. Berg after listening to all the other keto quacks I came back to him. I am now losing weight, feeling the best I ever have and have tons of energy. If you aren’t losing go back and listen to all of his lectures again your missing something, I know I was but I’m not anymore!
This is very good. I was thinking in these same lines, was aiming for this kind of calculation. Dr Berg, you provide a great public good.
By the math, there is around 3500 calories per pound. That's great information to know.
First time I've commented on any of your videos; very informative.
Thank you for your hard work.
I was diagnosed type 2 diabetic with an A1C of 11.1. In the first 3 months I reduce my A1C to a 5.8 and also lost 16 pounds. To date I have lost 38 lb and will have my next A1C mid September.
Again thank you for your videos.
I would recommend lectures by Dr David lusting. I agree with him when he says diabetis 2 should be renamed to "processed food disease disorder" because most of the time it's a dietary disease. Great work, you are on your way to curing yourself. I've been eating moderate carbs and high fat for years and my a1c is about 4.3.
You still on the keto? How it worked out over past 3 years
Thank you for this and all of your videos, they are very helpful. I was worried about eating too little since I started LCHF. I feel full when I eat about 900 - 1100 calories a day, separated in two meals. I also do IF. Haven't lost any weight yet, but I've only done it for a month and I have IR and hormonal imbalance. I will stick to this regime because I feel great, not bloated, no acid reflux or cravings. Now you've encouraged me to listen to my body and not force myself to eat more or drink 8 glasses of water.
Hi Jovana I was worried about the same eating too low carbs ,did you figure it out ?
@@techko7 Hi Stefka! I've been on and off the keto diet for a while now due to bad discipline. While on the regimen I learned to listen to my body and eat until I feel satiated. I usually manage to get around 1500 calories but sometimes (usually around the second week of restarting keto) I can barely eat anything. I found that to be normal and short-lasting as my appetite usually comes back about a week later. I keep the ratio of 5 to 10% carbs, 20 to 25% protein, and around 75% fat. This works for me as I managed to lose about 10 kg (it would be much more if I had the willpower :D) so I hope that it will work for you too. Good luck on your low-carb journey!

You don't have to eat 1 meal, you can break them down into smaller meals as long as you eat in a 4-6 hour window. You are still fasting at least 18 hours.
@@fan1008 True, your right. I've been Keto IF for over a year now, & I did 16/8 for the first few months, then upped it to 20/4 gently, but hit my first stall about 5 weeks ago, so then went OMAD. @@maxibake9323 I must be a freak because I want all in. I did a 24 hour fast out the gate then I switched to 18:6 day 2 and Ive been doing that almost everyday for the past 3.5 years. I guess we are all different. I'm frustrated I can't do a 7 or 14 day fast due to a medical condition:( anyway, my point for replying is that you risk limiting your nutrient intake when you do one meal vs two or three smaller meals. You may have an underlying condition preventing fat loss or you haven't faught your platue long enough. Finally, I personally would give priority over my nutrient intake anyday vs a inrelivent number from a scale which takes me to another point. Are you using a scale? Your body comp may be changing. I.e 100 + 25 fat or 110+ 15 fat will both show 125 on the scale. The scale is a tool but not a reliable one so don't depend on it. Wanna hear something shocking? You mentally think you are stalling when physiologically you aren't. I bet you didn't think of that, don't stop doing what you are doing, keep taking care of your health. Have a good life.

Hi, Could you share your experience with the Gall Bladder formula?
Monish Pawar it helped so much with digestion after my meals. Sometimes 1 was enough other times I needed 2. I had no belching or burping that occurred after meals. The small belches were consistent indicators my body was not producing enough bile. Also the itching in my hands and feet that occurred after meals went away.. those are also symptoms of low bile production.
@@RC-ib4vh thanks RC. That is motivating to know as a success story. How long did you take the GB formula? or do you continue to take it on an ongoing basis?

Thank you from Mexico, Dr. Berg YOU ARE THE BEST!
I've been on keto 15 months and from the start loved it. I am 64 y/o, tall, slim, healthy, active, Australian female. The small amount of comfortable fat I had went very fast and now I barely even want to eat but do eat for fuel. I did eat more during the first 6 months than now. I never liked food much anyway but before keto my body hated regular carby food. Now, my body shape is as youthful and light as ever!
I certainly am way too tired for a person that carries that much potential energy lol
POTENTIAL energy: you CAN use it BUT it will only get used if you either starve yourself on carbs gaining all the weight back right after you stop starving yourself// do fasting the right way (intermittend or prolonged) or a low carb diet (keto) and use that fat for energy because your body can actually use the POTENTIAL energy (fat)
Great info! Thank you!
Dr. Berg, you are simply THE BEST!!! You present things to clearly and concisely and give us the tools we need to succeed!!!! You ask us to think for ourselves!!!!
I hate counting calories 🤔
Just do an approximation
Or just eat until you are satiated. (As long as you're eating healthy Keto.)
Jason Hurst that’s what I’m doing. And it’s working just fine
Then don’t count. I’m not. Eat when you’re hungry and make sure you are eating a lot of good healthy fats and keep protein moderate and carbs low. Just estimate. You don’t need to full on count. It’s frustrating and a waste of time.
@@underthestarsoverthemoon4259 Same here. Keto is an eating plan; NOT rocket science. It doesn't need to be so complicated.
Thanks to Dr. Berg and other Kito advisors on UA-cam, I’ve worked up to: a Keto diet, 2 meals a day and a 45 hour fast per week. It’s a life changer!
UPDATE: I’ve changed from Keto to eating a healthy carbs (ex. A small portion of whole grain rice) and whole natural (unprocessed) food diet. I am still fasting 36-48 hours per week plus 2 or 3 longer fasts in the year. My morning smoothie (high fruit content) is now once or twice a week. Found it’s healthier to actually eat a small amount of whole fruits and berries. Plus switch coffee to green tea occasionally.
Wow that's amazing. I am new and just starting Keto. And I have been researching and would love to get up to something like what your doing. Please update us.
@@itiswell Thanks!

Wow, that sounds even better and I'm sure very sustainable and satisfying. Thank you again for replying with an update and continued success on your healthy lifestyle.
@@itiswell Thanks. Good luck in yours as well. : )
Wonderful, as always. 👍🏻
i was thinking about this yesterday and i looked it up today and you made a video. nice
Years of dieting (30 years) on very low calorie diets (500 cal a day,) plus hypothyroidism, and i am sure i have very high insulin resistance, has ruined my metabolism and hormones. I have fluctuated 25 lbs every 6 to 8 months since I was 16. Now I am doing one meal every other day and when I break the fast it is on keto foods. The progress is very slow and I need to incorporate weight training.
Maybe this time i can fix the damage of the previous years, get healthy to lose the weight, and keep it off for good.
Learning so much Dr. Berg
Thx
Throw in sprinting and it'll lower your insulin more than anything.
Your body just got really efficient in holding onto things, once you up your Nutrients to an insane level and consume them first thing after Fasting (when Cell doors are open), your body will quickly learn that famine is over and heal its pathway mechanism (the metabolism). If all the nutrients are present on a daily basis your "metabolism" will correct itself and be as efficient as when you were young. Nothing is ruined :) Give it an oil change and it'll run as good as new.
Good luck. I wish you all the best!!! Concentrate on getting healthy by eating healthy foods and losing weight will follow.
@@lillypod1337 thank you! I'm in the same boat, been keto for two months and chubby as ever. I've been exercising also. I need a meal plan.
@@chriswraver1192
will do, thx!
In 2 weeks, on the keto diet omad, with 1 48 hour fast I have lost 20lbs. It wasn't difficult. (I have a lot to lose)
Way to go!
Really Great Video! Thanks Doctor Berg !!!
An excellent video. Really well explained. You really are doing important work doctor.

I am laughing that tears started coming out
Dr Berg, I’m more than 2 years into my body transformation journey using a lot of your advice and methods. 46YO male, 6’3” starting weight of 300 and down 100 pounds so far.
I’m not going for an end weight goal, but I do have a body fat % goal of under 15%.
One challenge I’ve had with my overall weight loss has been loss of lean muscle mass and loose hanging skin. I’m now 5 months into a strength training regimen of 4-5 days a week and wow, what a difference this makes in what I see in the mirror. The scale hasn’t reflected much change, but it’s clear that my body fat percentage has dropped by quite a few points, and I know that adding more lean muscle mass also helps to burn more body fat.
I feel that people like myself that have a lot of weight to lose would greatly benefit from adding strength training to their plans...
Fantastic video. Have you any ideas on how to improve issues with a Cup and spill stomach deformity ?... thank you 🙏👍🏻🙏
Dr Berg : Hey, where are you heading?
Me : Oh just carrying my fats to the store.
3.5 years on Keto ..now doing OMAD and a 48 hour fast twice a month..I'm happy with the weight loss actually 100 Lbs in the first year and all the loose skin I was so sure would be there to remind me that i was once fat is SLOWLY going away ..I've thought real hard for over a year now that if i would do OMEOD [one meal every other day] this would help speed things up but I'm so scared to screw things up..Im today 40 hours into my 48 hour fast Glucose is 63 and Ketones at 5.4 I will end my fast with a bike ride or a 30 min HIIT's ...Should I leave good enough alone ? or push the envelope ? At 5'8" I was 268 lbs in Jan of 2016 today I'm 164 Lbs still have love handles and loose skin in my stomach area I never believed the BMI charts on the internet but I guess I really should be around 150 Lbs Not sure if i will ever get there but It wont be for not trying I told my self in 2016 I will give it my all for 5 years to try to get to 10% body fat...I'm 70 % of the way there and still have almost a year and 4 month to go so I'm not in a desperate situation but I'm wanting to do the OMEOD .
Eloy Garcia you’re an inspiration!!!!!!
Thank you for the information as always makes perfect sense...
Great information!!! Thanks 😀
