Women are often harsh to each other sometimes, not just men to women. I can recall when I was a housewife looking after my child, I often felt the working women looking down on me for not working in a ‘what-is-wrong-with-you’ way, but then when I became a working mum, I often felt I couldn’t be there for my child and it also felt wrong. It’s hard for both whether you’re a homemaker or a working mum, we should understand that and try not to be too harsh and judgmental towards each other.

What has been portrayed accurately in this speach is often women who work full time outside the home end up also having a full time role in the home, and understandably being overwhelmed by it. She said women will go to work full time, and still have to make dinner, do dishes, check homework, give the bathes, grocery shop, run all the errands, run the kids around, scrub the bathroom, do the laundry, etc. She had four children, and said running a house of six was already work. Of course, there was no fast food, my mom didn’t consider ordering a pizza dinner either. Now kids are obese because it’s rare to have a home cooked meal because both parents are running around. When I was in my 20s working, I recall so many women with families running errands during their lunch break, just constantly looking frazzled. My mom was right in a lot of ways. I’m all for women having choices, but I think one of the biggest lies of feminism is “you can have it all.”

I recall as a kid my mom having Phil Donahue in the background and the yelling between working moms and stay at home moms was crazy. I assume that was during this time. Women have more choices today than they ever had. If women choose to stay at home with their kids, and she can afford that (not advocating welfare dependency) good for her. If a woman decides never to marry or have kids, good for her. If a woman wants to be a fire fighter, and can pass the same criteria as a male coworker, good for her. If a woman wants to juggle her work and family with hopefully her partner/kids dad, and they can make it work, good for them. There is no one solution for everyone. Working moms and stay at home moms do seem to shame each other, and this should stop.

Considering I live in a country with high living expenses, I can safely say that this is not entirely true. It is perfectly viable to only have one source of income and maintain a household, the problem really is how materialistic you are and how pampered you want to be. If you're fine with minimalism, in order to cope with the high expenses of frivilous side features, then you'll even end up saving more money and having a better retirement than the household making a higher gross.

MRiitta What happens if a woman chooses to dedicate her life to her career, let's assume she becomes very succesful as a stockbroker and has dozens of wealthy clients whose portfolios she is managing. And one day, when she is 52 years old and all possibilities of building a family have expired, the stock market crashes for the 2nd time. She loses her job, her career and a fair bit of her money. Even if she still has enough money to sustain her for the rest of her life, what is she going to do? She has no family, no work, nothing meaningful in her life. My point in saying this is that disasters happen and if you try and make choices by imagining the worst thing that can happen, you will never find something to do becausd anything can end very badly.

The problem is she's right but also rallies against the solution to the problem. The position of homemaker should not be underestimated. We've created that world where women work 2 full time jobs and are unhappy at both. However, she dismisses the idea that men can be homemakers too. The role is important and we have the economy to allow 1 parent to stay at home and raise the child while the other works. Having a parent there is probably the best thing for a child's development but we now look down on the role as outdated and either sexist or unmanly. We need to make it socially acceptable to stay at home and raise our children again
You make some good points, but nowadays it is economincally impossible, especially here in the UK, where rents and property prices are out of proportion to salaries, that 1 income is simply not enough, especially if there are children to support. Looking at heterosexual relationships, especially omes with children, there is an economic need for both parents to work. However, sadly, most of the time, the burden of running the home is left to the women, hence they cannot have it all, when their husbands/boyfriends do nothing or only the minimum to do their share.
Support a women's choice to work or not work. Do not sit back in judgement when the choice is made. No matter what choice you have made you have experienced that judgement if you are mother. Sad really.

The entire series is excellent. It shows what a hipocrite Phyllis was. She did a lot of damage that will take 100 years to overcome. Even today women end up with the vast majority of household chores. By dividing it well, not only are the jobs divided among the sexes, also the home duties. Nearly half of marriages end in divorce, and we have a crisis of fatherlessness in many American homes. Both of these situations cause harm to children who never consented to being born in the first place. I'm not saying the ERA is responsible for the breakdown of families (I agree with the concept of the ERA), but I am saying we should have a total and complete shutdown of sex and marriage until we can figure out what the hell is going on.

I'm having trouble understanding the point. A wife has children and the couple decide she is staying home to care for the children and run the house. I've raised children and it takes a lot of time and effort. How is it unequal for a couple to choose this division of labor? Seriously. Are the children somehow unworthy of a full-time caregiver? Is it better to put the children in daycare so they are without both parents all day? I fail to see how it's unfair or unequal for either parent to choose to be a full-time caregiver to their children. Am I missing something?
Money. Most couples who have children simply can't afford to have one parent stay home. It's now an unfortunate reality that while the cost of living has gone up and up, wage increases have risen only very slowly or not at all. That's what happens when the economy is based on poorly regulated capitalism and where only the fairly well off can afford to run for office.

Yes, there are poor families where both parents are working multiple jobs. There are also middle class families that do without so one spouse can stay home with the children. When it comes to poor families, my effort is running Youth Learning Code. The program teaches youth how to code so they can mix that knowledge with their passion and pursue higher paying jobs. That then allows them to support their parents in a better lifestyle. But saying money, or the rapacious nature of corporations, is the problem is too glib. It fails to address the perception that staying home to care for children is somehow second rate. I can think of no task more important than raising children. The parent who stays home to do it, father or mother, deserves the praise and admiration of our communities.

Growing up with a mother who did literally everything (was the provider and also the housewife bc dad no longer worked but didn't lift a finger around the house), as an adult, I sometimes wish she was a full-time mom. I'd like to know if my life would be different. (She was under immense stress, the economy was in a bad shape, she was hot-headed by nature and couldn't regulate her temper at times. I agree with what she said as a man, not because gender equality won't favour men interests but some feminist ideas like she said creates lots of negativity to the woman to live and work confidently and independently. Because feminists think men take over their jobs and disallow women to express their social and political views freely, which makes them hate men. On the job part, it is the complete opposite of what feminists think because firms always want to hire a worker who could do the job well. As long as the worker could perform the job up to the employer's requirement, gender remains secondary to the employer. In fact, some industries like education have higher female to male ratio due to demand characteristics (i.e: parents regard female teachers able to nurture students as if their children). On the politics part, women have a strong presence in politics despite it is traditionally dominated by men. As a voter myself, I think a politician is still counted as a job who should represent us well and deliver relevantly good policy, voting for a man or a woman is not the only major concern. I live in a city where the head of state is a woman, who is notoriously noted as not democratically elected by the citizens but by a selected group called the election committee and delivering ineffective policies. She hasn't ever advocated woman' rights explicitly and has only been concentrating on policy areas without gender factor. Not all female politicians represent women, some only serve their interests only.
Feminism is one thing. It had a reason to exist back then. There were actual issues that needed addressing and solving. Neo-feminism on the other hand , (what they try to pass as "feminism" in our times) is a pre-designed social engineering project which exploits many feminine traits by spreading confusion, resentment and misunderstanding, for political gain. It works wonderfully, like in how it also fosters things like single mother famililes, hence parental alienation syndrome, which goes to perpetuate the vicious circle by breeding women who resent men from childhood and come primed for it.

Sometimes being a home maker is not a choice, but it is done to you, as there still are so many places that lay off or push newly wedded or pregnant women out of the workplace while men are promoted cuz they became "breadwinners". Sometimes choosing to be a home maker is a privilege, because that means you have a financial support system. Equality means that working men should also take care of their children and make home as much as working women do, and full-time working women should be paid same as full-time working man with same occupation and position so that she can also afford to support her home maker husband/partner. Neither are going well in my country as we have the biggest gender pay gap and biggest housework time gap between working f/m couple in OECD.

What a cheap propaganda technique. If this show was more honest, both sides would be fairly respresented as what they are, without commentary. The music and frowning are negative commentary on what's being said, and the show doesn't give the same harshly negative coloring to the other side's speeches. If I was producing a show like this, I'd want it to be so truthful that both sides come away thinking they were fairly represented, and if they take offense it's only offense that the truth was shown. It's a shame the creators of this show missed an opportunity to better help viewers understand both sides of the conflict by fairly showing the merits. Whether or not you disagree with her, Schlafly was so successful because her arguments were appealing and reasonable. This scene attempts to show that, but undermines it in an attempt to dissuade the viewer from sympathizing with what Schlafly is saying. They didn't have the courage to show what could have been a rousing speech, so they had to add doubt and negativity over her words. I don't want to see either side given such treatment. Their words should stand on their own and the audience can decide whose ideas fit with their values. I wish the creators of this show had been confident enough in their feminism to allow an honest portrayal of the other side, without all the frowning and doubt and gloomy music over what were historically successful speeches that pleased most of the audience. If you're honest and confident that your ideas are better, you should be able to show that they're better than the real ideas of your opposition. Not an artificially weakened straw-man representation of your opposition.

They cut to her sister (the frowning lady) because of a private conversation they had had earlier in the series about her sister's own life and perceived failings (she was in her 40's, unmarried and without children and had basically devoted her life to taking care of philys's kids but felt pathetic and unhappy). In this scene, as phylis is criticizing Gloria Steinem she almost repeats word for word the conversation but in a negative dismissive way... ergo her sister's reaction. Women are often harsh to each other sometimes, not just men to women. I can recall when I was a housewife looking after my child, I often felt the working women looking down on me for not working in a ‘what-is-wrong-with-you’ way, but then when I became a working mum, I often felt I couldn’t be there for my child and it also felt wrong. It’s hard for both whether you’re a homemaker or a working mum, we should understand that and try not to be too harsh and judgmental towards each other.

And have one child down the line. But the expectations to succeed and take care of my mom financially is too significant to set aside.

Tamara West I recall my mom telling me (in the 80s when I was a kid) that she always thought the women burning their bras were crazy. She said women will go to work full time, and still have to make dinner, do dishes, check homework, give the bathes, grocery shop, run all the errands, run the kids around, scrub the bathroom, do the laundry, etc. She had four children, and said running a house of six was already work. Of course, there was no fast food, my mom didn’t consider ordering a pizza dinner either. Now kids are obese because it’s rare to have a home cooked meal because both parents are running around. When I was in my 20s working, I recall so many women with families running errands during their lunch break, just constantly looking frazzled. My mom was right in a lot of ways. I’m all for women having choices, but I think one of the biggest lies of feminism is “you can have it all.”

I recall as a kid my mom having Phil Donahue in the background and the yelling between working moms and stay at home moms was crazy. I assume that was during this time. Women have more choices today than they ever had. If women choose to stay at home with their kids, and she can afford that (not advocating welfare dependency) good for her. If a woman decides never to marry or have kids, good for her. If a woman wants to be a fire fighter, and can pass the same criteria as a male coworker, good for her. If a woman wants to juggle her work and family with hopefully her partner/kids dad, and they can make it work, good for them. There is no one solution for everyone. Working moms and stay at home moms do seem to shame each other, and this should stop.

Considering I live in a country with high living expenses, I can safely say that this is not entirely true. It is perfectly viable to only have one source of income and maintain a household, the problem really is how materialistic you are and how pampered you want to be. If you're fine with minimalism, in order to cope with the high expenses of frivilous side features, then you'll even end up saving more money and having a better retirement than the household making a higher gross.

Even if she still has enough money to sustain her for the rest of her life, what is she going to do? She has no family, no work, nothing meaningful in her life. The problem is she's right but also rallies against the solution to the problem. The position of homemaker should not be underestimated. We've created that world where women work 2 full time jobs and are unhappy at both.
However, she dismisses the idea that men can be homemakers too. The role is important and we have the economy to allow 1 parent to stay at home and raise the child while the other works. Having a parent there is probably the best thing for a child's development but we now look down on the role as outdated and either sexist or unmanly. You make some good points, but nowadays it is economincally impossible, especially here in the UK, where rents and property prices are out of proportion to salaries, that 1 income is simply not enough, especially if there are children to support. Looking at heterosexual relationships, especially omes with children, there is an economic need for both parents to work. However, sadly, most of the time, the burden of running the home is left to the women, hence they cannot have it all, when their husbands/boyfriends do nothing or only the minimum to do their share.
Support a women's choice to work or not work. Do not sit back in judgement when the choice is made. No matter what choice you have made you have experienced that judgement if you are mother. Sad really.

The entire series is excellent. It shows what a hipocrite Phyllis was. She did a lot of damage that will take 100 years to overcome. Even today women end up with the vast majority of household chores. Men do all kinds of complicated jobs and use various complex computers and yet claim they don’t know how to use a washing machine or an iron, or cook anything except on a charcoal grill.

By dividing it well, not only are the jobs divided among the sexes, also the home duties. Nearly half of marriages end in divorce, and we have a crisis of fatherlessness in many American homes. Both of these situations cause harm to children who never consented to being born in the first place.
I'm not saying the ERA is responsible for the breakdown of families (I agree with the concept of the ERA), but I am saying we should have a total and complete shutdown of sex and marriage until we can figure out what the hell is going on.

I'm having trouble understanding the point. A wife has children and the couple decide she is staying home to care for the children and run the house. I've raised children and it takes a lot of time and effort. How is it unequal for a couple to choose this division of labor? Seriously. Are the children somehow unworthy of a full-time caregiver? Is it better to put the children in daycare so they are without both parents all day? I fail to see how it's unfair or unequal for either parent to choose to be a full-time caregiver to their children. Am I missing something?
Money. Most couples who have children simply can't afford to have one parent stay home. It's now an unfortunate reality that while the cost of living has gone up and up, wage increases have risen only very slowly or not at all. That's what happens when the economy is based on poorly regulated capitalism and where only the fairly well off can afford to run for office.
@@scibear9944 I agree the capitalism is poorly regulated. The government is essentially run by corporate interests. I disagree with the idea that income is the problem. Yes, there are poor families where both parents are working multiple jobs. There are also middle class families that do without so one spouse can stay home with the children. When it comes to poor families, my effort is running Youth Learning Code. The program teaches youth how to code so they can mix that knowledge with their passion and pursue higher paying jobs. That then allows them to support their parents in a better lifestyle.
But saying money, or the rapacious nature of corporations, is the problem is too glib. It fails to address the perception that staying home to care for children is somehow second rate. I can think of no task more important than raising children. The parent who stays home to do it, father or mother, deserves the praise and admiration of our communities.

Growing up with a mother who did literally everything (was the provider and also the housewife bc dad no longer worked but didn't lift a finger around the house), as an adult, I sometimes wish she was a full-time mom. I'd like to know if my life would be different. (She was under immense stress, the economy was in a bad shape, she was hot-headed by nature and couldn't regulate her temper at times. Caused me a big trauma that one time she lost it.)

I agree with everything she said. As time has gone on, this speech has become more and more accurate. Just look at the rising depression among modern women, the decreasing birthrate, the collapse of the family and mental health of children. This was spot on.
Birth rates have decreased because people have decided to not have as many children. It’s a phenomenon seen in every country: as their GDP and education goes up, birthrates fall from 5-7 to 1-2.

I agree with what she said as a man, not because gender equality won't favour men interests but some feminist ideas like she said creates lots of negativity to the woman to live and work confidently and independently. Because feminists think men take over their jobs and disallow women to express their social and political views freely, which makes them hate men.
On the job part, it is the complete opposite of what feminists think because firms always want to hire a worker who could do the job well. As long as the worker could perform the job up to the employer's requirement, gender remains secondary to the employer. In fact, some industries like education have higher female to male ratio due to demand characteristics (i.e: parents regard female teachers able to nurture students as if their children).
On the politics part, women have a strong presence in politics despite it is traditionally dominated by men. As a voter myself, I think a politician is still counted as a job who should represent us well and deliver relevantly good policy, voting for a man or a woman is not the only major concern. I live in a city where the head of state is a woman, who is notoriously noted as not democratically elected by the citizens but by a selected group called the election committee and delivering ineffective policies. She hasn't ever advocated woman' rights explicitly and has only been concentrating on policy areas without gender factor. Not all female politicians represent women, some only serve their interests only.
Feminism is one thing. It had a reason to exist back then. There were actual issues that needed addressing and solving.
Neo-feminism on the other hand , (what they try to pass as "feminism" in our times) is a pre-designed social engineering project which exploits many feminine traits by spreading confusion, resentment and misunderstanding, for political gain.

Sometimes being a home maker is not a choice, but it is done to you, as there still are so many places that lay off or push newly wedded or pregnant women out of the workplace while men are promoted cuz they became "breadwinners". Sometimes choosing to be a home maker is a privilege, because that means you have a financial support system. Equality means that working men should also take care of their children and make home as much as working women do, and full-time working women should be paid same as full-time working man with same occupation and position so that she can also afford to support her home maker husband/partner. Neither are going well in my country as we have the biggest gender pay gap and biggest housework time gap between working f/m couple in OECD.

freemayo It’s more complicated than that. Most people want to raise a family and it’s generally expected that men are the breadwinners while the women look after the kids. So therefore most men would want to start a family with someone who’s able to take good care of the kids while they work. Parental leave is so brief for men that they’ll have to get back into work sooner than women. It’s a societal issue and it’s hard for people to change so easily.

Yibro Nobody wants children who are not well taken care of. Caregivers and extended family can be very good at taking care of children though. What bothers me is the lack of choice. fmla in my country provides 12 weeks of paid leave. So many people are forced to go back to work before they may want to out of necessity. Longer leave would help families at all income levels make the best decision for themselves.
They put discordant, ominous music over the climax of her speech and repeatedly cut to the few frowns in the audience to cue viewers into they're supposed to think about what Schlafly is saying. What a cheap propaganda technique. If this show was more honest, both sides would be fairly respresented as what they are, without commentary. The music and frowning are negative commentary on what's being said, and the show doesn't give the same harshly negative coloring to the other side's speeches.
If I was producing a show like this, I'd want it to be so truthful that both sides come away thinking they were fairly represented, and if they take offense it's only offense that the truth was shown.
It's a shame the creators of this show missed an opportunity to better help viewers understand both sides of the conflict by fairly showing the merits. Whether or not you disagree with her, Schlafly was so successful because her arguments were appealing and reasonable. This scene attempts to show that, but undermines it in an attempt to dissuade the viewer from sympathizing with what Schlafly is saying. They didn't have the courage to show what could have been a rousing speech, so they had to add doubt and negativity over her words. I don't want to see either side given such treatment. Their words should stand on their own and the audience can decide whose ideas fit with their values.
I wish the creators of this show had been confident enough in their feminism to allow an honest portrayal of the other side, without all the frowning and doubt and gloomy music over what were historically successful speeches that pleased most of the audience. If you're honest and confident that your ideas are better, you should be able to show that they're better than the real ideas of your opposition. Not an artificially weakened straw-man representation of your opposition.
Yes! You put exactly what I was thinking into better words. She had some valid arguments, but they made sure to let the audience know that she was "wrong" by the music and audience reactions.
You are wrong in your assumptions. All the crowd in that luncheon was in favor of her views. They cut to her sister (the frowning lady) because of a private conversation they had had earlier in the series about her sister's own life and perceived failings (she was in her 40's, unmarried and without children and had basically devoted her life to taking care of philys's kids but felt pathetic and unhappy). In this scene, as phylis is criticizing Gloria Steinem she almost repeats word for word the conversation but in a negative dismissive way... ergo her sister's reaction. That's the only reason those cuts to her face appear. All the other ladies were complete crazy conservatives as her and agreed zealously with her views.
Satire or not, this is actually comprehensive and valid despite the bias.
