The absolute audacity of the BBC having a video about casual sexism that includes clips about equal pay when only last year one of their own news anchors had to sue them for equal pay!
BBC has racist hiring practices too, they even display it openly like they havent got a clue
So, they aren't allowed to show a dramatization of historical issues if the issues still exist?? How does that work, exactly? No shows about sexism, racism, poverty, homelessness..... Boy, things are gonna get pretty dull.

The BBC is not a monolith, the executives controlling pay and hiring aren’t the same people producing programming or running their UA-cam channel. If you worked in an organisation with institutionalised sexism wouldn’t you want to use the money and influence of that organisation to champion equality?
My grandmother is currently 93 and obtained a degree in chemistry. She remains one of the smartest women I know. Unfortunately she was not able to get a job in her field because she was a woman. She taught school for many years. I’m sure that she touched many young lives but being prevented for doing what she truly loved because of her gender....that’s a lesson that has stayed with me.

She got her degree just about the time WWII broke out, when men were sent to battle and women took their places in industry. It’s a shame they bypassed her.

Oh my god yes! I feel silly saying this as I wasn't even around in that era, but growing up in the 00's and 10's whenever we were in a big group of us like at school or a party or a festival or something, so often it was always guys domineering the conversation and if you tried to contribute you just got blanked. It didn't matter how funny, intelligent or insightful what you had to say was. And then you were the one who would be called "boring", "stuck up", "stupid", when well wow, maybe if that's the treatment you got every time you spoke, maybe naturally you would reconcile into yourself a bit more?
You had to try so much harder to be funny, interesting, intelligent just to get your voice heard. Otherwise you were just a stupid, stuck-up girl. Whereas guys could make any slapdash comment and it was all like "whe-eeyyyy!"
It's paid off in a way now, because years of that means I can drive most guys under the table with my humour and intelligence now, but it was awful at the time, especially because at the time , I was young and unaware, so just felt like everything was my fault and I had to try harder
I was reflecting on this last night weirdly enough before I even watched this. Funny, its only really sunk in recently how misogynistic it all was, I just always felt like it was my fault before.....

I found that this would be worse if you were more stereotypically girly/feminine. It was a bit of a joke cos I was kinda more into the alternative scene music wise, but I was still pretty girly, and like if a girl wearing hoodies with about a million facial piercings said the exact same thing as me it would received so much better than with me 🙄 probably the whole "cool girl" thing and hatred of things feminine.
I also ended up going to more "cool" parties in my later years at school, (the above was more in my early adulthood) , and I was so shocked how many of these girls who had like really high status and I considered really popular just sat there like these pretty wallflowers. They were girls like this in other years groups and that who I legit never heard speak, but still had that high status and stuff. 🙄 Not to be rude to them, I just found in interesting and sort of sad that it was more probably the social culture that did it to them.
Let me be clear, there is NOTHING wrong with being shy or quiet. But the fact that like some of the most popular girls in school were like that acting like that? I just found it odd.

I think sexism was actually really awful in the noughties and early 0000's. It was different. But it was still there.

Your comment reminded me of a few months ago I was working in a store (during the pandemic so we the staff had masks on) and a bloke I served said loudly about me "SEE, SOME OF THE STAFF HERE DO SMILE" (I was smiling because I felt I had to for some reason, despite wearing the mask.) He then told me he complained to a manager the last time he shopped there about "the miserable old cow" who served him last time. He complained because a woman didn't smile at him when she was wearing a mask working long hours throughout a pandemic. Most of the staff there were women, would've been interesting to see if a male member of staff hadn't smiled at him if he would've had the same reaction.

This is great but I'd love to see something like this set in the present day, with the same kind of scenes. I think most people would agree that things have been bad in previous decades but these settings give a sense of it happening 'way back then', as if it's all fixed now. Happens a lot with racism on tv too. It's like they're worried the viewers will feel attacked if they hold a mirror up to them.

The show is telling how the women’s rights movement happened and how Phyllis Schlaffly was able to change the course of American politics into the thing it is today. If you watch the show it also ends in present day showing how nothing has actually changed in the women’s rights front/racism front because of Phyllis’ lifelong career and mission spent to derail it.

What strikes me as ironic is that Phyllis was facing the same issues as the "libbers" she opposed; she approached it from a "conservative" viewpoint. Seriously, the same issues!
I started working in offices after college in the mid 1970's. Suffered all types of sexual harassment from that time til the the 1990's. It was better, but still happening.

One of the best shows I've ever seen, exceptional casting and acting all round telling a very interesting and somewhat important story.
If you don't know why this show exists, you're part of the reason it does.
Miss. This show exists to deceive the mass public. 90% of it is lies. If you believe that Hollywood could actually do a factual series about a successful conservative women who beat a bunch of rabid liberal/socialists you are naive. Don’t give into groupthink find out the truth for yourself

Honestly, no it isn't. I retired recently, however in the last probably 30 years of my working life I did not see examples of this behaviour. In the 70's and 80's yes, but after that it was a different environment.
@@workman122 I can't tell you how many times it's happened to me in real life. And I'm still working.
It depends on the place but my last work environment was shocking, I'd be explaining something and guys just literally wouldn't listen to me. Interrupting me before they've managed to grasp what I was actually saying. We had so many technical glitches and machinery not working (out of my control, it was a shocking warehouse) and the amount of times a guy was like "what have YOU done wrong?" "What are YOU struggling with?"
A silver lining is if you're more attractive this will happen to you more often, (days I did my make up and looked nice where so much worse for this), so take it as some sort of sick compliment. Although I would rather it didn't happen at all
I'm a bit more aware of this stuff now so I can handle it a bit more, but when you're young obviously you take it personally and think it's your fault 🙄 erghhh

You forget that Americans pronounce most English words incorrectly as they are lazy and refuse to learn the proper English way of saying the word. Take A-L-U-M-I-N-I-U-M for example, you can not say the word, you pronounce it incorrectly. So you change how the word is spelt to suit your pronunciation. Very lazy!! As for the way Americans pronounce "Edinburgh", the capitol of Scotland, it makes me cringe every time I here an American use the word.

I just love how people believe the fight for equality is over, especially seeing as the finale of this very tv show highlighted that because of the actions portrayed throughout the show some states in the US didn't ratify the equal rights amendment until the latter half of the 2010s.

Asking someone to smile is not sexism. HE was smiling.

If you paid attention, it wasn't what they asked or said that mattered, but meaning behind their words.
Men asking women to "smile" takes away any sense of individuality they have as a person; the man doesnt want her to be happy but thinks she's prettier with a smile or he feels like she is happy at him by smiling since a smile means happiness. If a man asked another man to smile, it would be odd or simply rude because why the hell should someone smile for someone else unless, say, for pictures?
In the context of the man asking her if she wanted to start a business, it was the husband that was sexist in that situation by immediately jumping to saying no and taking away his wife's voice or opinion. The other man was simply giving a compliment that the woman seemed happy at, but her husband jumped in to answer FOR her, rather than let her talk for herself.
The husband questioning who would pay for law school is sexist as he, in that time, COULD have not let her use any of their family's money. In his mind it was only HIS money, and she would need his permission to use it. The wife had no financial freedom and was financially controlled by her husband.
All of these situations are sexist because it centres on the man of the situation keeping control away from the wife and doesn't treat her like a person. If she was a man, they would let her answer for herself, let her use money how she wished, not demand she smile just to make them happy or comfortable.

Who really has power in the family when the woman is the only one who is seen as competent around children? Fathers were not even allowed to be present at the births of their own child until recent times, that's the low status men have always been held in within the family.

the sexism in that scene is not about that question, but in the way her husband replied. look again, what he is implying is that since she is a woman, she is not allowed to even think about having her own business and therefore being financially indipendent.

This is so "heartbreaking". I was only Four when this happened so I didn't fully understand it. I remember reading about Shirley Chisholm being the First African American Woman in Congress (although she is the daughter of Caribbean Parents). She'd be so proud to hear about Kamala Harris.

Is it success to compliment someone on their work and success they use their skill to create an independent self-owned business as a woman entrepreneur? That's not sexist or patriarchal.
And we all know that men are encouraged to frown and look grumpy on TV talk shows. Just turn on to a major network at night and it's nothing but frowns, right? All those gloomy, frowning TV hosts looking sad and not wanting to have fun.
Plenty of the other clips do depict men being insensitive jerks and even showing chauvinist anti-woman prejudice. But the political bent of the show is clear when the Women's Libbers are not once shown as being frustrating. Even if you're on their side, they could test one's patience as well as any casually sexist male boss. There was plenty of intolerance, extremism, sexism, and prejudice on both sides of this debate. Plenty of women who really _weren't_ for the freedom for women, but only wanted women to be like them and disparaged anyone who freely choose something else. There were _vicious_ divisions among feminists about sex, the value of men, homosexuality, transgenderism, pornography, marriage, violence, political philosophy, authoritarianism, socialism, the proper role of government in resolving the issues of their movement, and many other issues. But sure, the really annoying things women involved in gender politics back then faced were men telling women to smile more, complimenting them on their domestic skills, and encouraging them to start their own businesses and become financially independent.
In real life, no matter who you are it tends to be positively received when someone admires your smile, your cooking, or encourages you in business. They're compliments. Women faced greater challenges and restrictions than being complimented too much. To depict mere compliments as insidious oppression is to depict women as weak and privileged to not have significant problems.
Phyllis Schlafly would never have admitted to being upset that someone said her baking skill was professional quality and could be used to launch a successful business. Who wouldn't want to be told that about their baking? Perhaps some of the truly frustrating more radical feminist women who disparaged any traditionally feminine or domestic skills like baking and were proud to be incompetent in the kitchen. Though baking is really traditionally neither masculine nor feminine in association, especially among professional bakers. People who actually bake, men and women alike, want people to enjoy their baking. That's why they serve it. It's good to learn that people enjoy your baking.
Most of these clips are not abuse or even harassment, although most are uncomfortable and some demeaning. People nowadays still make one another uncomfortable all the time, but we do generally avoid doing so in these particular ways which we now recognize as to be avoided.

This is sexism, yes. But some of it is also just a failure to connect with another human being, especially on a basic level. Of course women want to make the same as their male co-workers. Anyone would want that. I don't even view half this shit as male vs. female. It's just basic human wants and needs that everyone shares.
This was 45+ years ago. Are we not allowed to grow? If someone fails once, do you remind him every day of his failures without recognizing his successes? I love the premise and the story but to imply that nothing has changed is wrong.

To some extent I agree with you! I do think that our culture has vastly improved since the 70s and women enjoy greater freedom and expression than before. But I still do think these shows need to exist, not necessarily to scold the scold of the present but to face and reveal the kind of discrimination in the past and prevent the same things from happening in the future.
A similar example might be adaptations about slavery in the US. We are, in no doubt, past slavery (I.e. any sane person will recognize the rights of a black individual, keyword being sane person), however, these adaptations are still important in order to be able to understand of the depth and nuances of the inequities of the past.
But I would like to hear your thoughts on this! You seem like a sensible and agreeable person!
Replies here fail to understand the comment. It does not say that sexism have totally gone away but what this film failed to portray is the little successes we have achieved a long the way. For example, before it was difficult for a woman to hold office or own a company, today this is not true anymore for some countries. It is equally important to keep reminding of the uncorrected mistakes as it is to celebrate successes.

We appreciate men who empower women and treat them as equal partners in various fields as long as physical strength is not the limiting factor that is.

The solution might be to have a lot more men born gay. Genetic biologists are studying all that. Another approach to consider is allowing women to carry concealed weapons, while reducing the penalty for homicide by a female defending herself from male sexism to a simple citation-level misdemeanor. In the interim, we should drop the Mr, Miss, Mrs and Ms, and replace it with Mx. Lass and Lad similarly replaced with Lax. So many ideas, so little time (to fix all this in time for the next PC outrage, still in gestation, as yet unborn)!

Yes, this is clips from a real show called Mrs. America. I have no idea if any of the characters are based on real people or not. But it is set in 1970's U.S.A. And my understanding is that the plot is focused on both the women who were fight for equal women's rights, as well as the women who fighting against those causes. Yes, there were actually some women who were against those things.
Yes, it's based on true events of women activists who tried to get the ERA ratified in 38 states and those who did not want it ratified.

Honestly i dont think saying ,,dont forget to smile" when you go on TV to someone is sexist. If I, a male, was invited to TV I would be told the same, its not about the gender. Its about smiling on TV, nothing more.

I understand it seems that way. However. People rarely ask a man who is high up on the corporate ladder, even a man who baked muffins, if he ever thought about opening a bakery. But people ask it of women all the time, no matter how successful they are. It implies that women are more suited to kitchen activities and that the woman's ability to make tasty baked goods should be a more important focus to her than her actual skills and ambitions.
It's also not a compliment to tell a woman you aren't dating that, say, she has beautiful legs. Or that she's so pretty when she smiles. Both LOOK like compliments but actually they are condescending and/or objectifying, and therefore sexist.

I’ve heard it said to men many times, and it’s no coincidence that many men actually are chefs and opened restaurants. Some of them even claim on their menu that the whole business started after they were complimented. Perhaps women should just stop taking everything as “sexist” - how’s that for a thought?
By the way you don’t get to dictate what is a compliment or what is not. Telling someone they have a pretty smile, or beautiful eyes IS a compliment and that is why it “looks” like one. It’s the one thinking it objectifies the person who has the problem here. Somehow, it’s ok to compliment someone on his or her intellectual abilities but not on his or her physical features? What kind of logic is that? I don’t need to date someone to appreciate their beauty: I didn’t date the Mona Lisa, yet I appreciate her smile. Likewise I didn’t date Botticelli’s Venus. It’s an insult to my freedom of expression to limit me in this way: we’re not talking about vulgar and crude remarks here, we’re taking about an innocuous compliment about someone’s smile (and I’m not referring to the particular scene shown in the clip). Some girls have complimented me in the past and they were not dating me. I didn’t report them to the compliment brigade and maintained a good platonic relationship. There is no way I am succumbing to this craziness that some people want to impose on others at all costs.
