    Congrats mate!!! Thanks for the mention! Your channel will grow a lot more yet, it's growing faster than mine did for sure! That A2090A won't clash with ZIII RAM - totally different range, its above the 24bit range basically! The issue with the PiStorm is just about timing I think - some Zorro cards like it, others don't! Oooo - that ZIP drive PCB looks handy, I was going to bodge something but will try and get one of those! Some amazing donations from Darren there =O Those PC cards will be good to try and fit into the EATX! I've got a Pentium based one to try and fix, and will try doing the same I think!

      Thanks mate, couldn't have gotten here without your help.
      I'm sure you're right about the A2090A but it also might be the case that I didn't have it configured correctly as Andi thinks he may have left it configured for an xt drive. But at least that also solves the problem of how to read out that old drive from the A590. The stuff from Darren is unbelievable to be honest, can't thank him enough. I was thinking of putting one of them into the EATX build but I need to mull it over as I might need to pull out a zorro card to make space.

    Could you imagine consumers today having to go through a sector defect list on their brand new ssd drives. This kind of low level configuration was a common thing that was like buttering bread to most people back in the 80's to 90's. I remember having to low level format a 10MB hard disk using DOS Debug commands every month in order to map out the bad sectors and if you had any in the boot partition then the drive was a write off.

      I didn't come to PCs until 1996 so by that stage all of this was already automated but, and as weird as it sounds, I've been enjoying reaching back to the systems from before then and experiencing the hurdles they put you through.

    Massive congratulations on the 10K subscribers! That's a criminally low number for such an entertaining and educational channel, but thankfully I'm subscribed, so at least I'm not at risk of any legal repercussions.
    As for what I'm interested in seeing? Well, all of it! I have a particular interest in the single board computers. I've got one of my own which I mercilessly tore from an ancient Polycom audio/video conferencing bridge. It was a massive hunk of a machine that took up a full quarter of a rack, and the SBC running it was a socket 7 pentium of some kind. I also used to have another Polycom rackmount server that was only 2U high (it was a voicemail server), which had a SBC with a socket 370 processor. Unfortunately my parents threw it away without consulting me when they moved out of the family home, along with a perfectly working 19" FD Trinitron monitor. Which is a long way of saying I'm interested in seeing the SBCs. Although perhaps you might want to work on those machines with the corrosion first, before they get any worse.

    • @CRG
      @CRG  4 місяці тому +1

      Thanks, 10k might be a small number by UA-cam standards but its a massive milestone for me and its hard to put into works how much it means to get to those 5 figures.
      The SBCs will absolutely be getting videos soon as I'm puzzled as to why they both aren't working. Just want to make a test bed of sorts, probably 3D print something, to mount the back plane on then I'll be ready to go with a video.
      The battery corrosion in the 500+ is bad but its not the worst I've seen so it can wait another month or two. Its been sitting like that probably since the 90s so another few weeks won't hurt it plus its been far to long since I did any PC related stuff. The next video is PC stuff although not the SBCs just yet.

    When you put in a disc in the ZIP drive, don't rest your fingers on the transparent plastic windows. It will get loose and fall in to the drive.
    ZIP drive plus can handle both SCSI and parallel on the same 25 pin connector.
    You can read "AutoDetect" on the cable.
    The old SCSI drive could need a start signal, but it could also be the Molex connector you used. If you look in it you can see that there is only one negative pin. Some devices need both negative to work. Keep that in mind when using that power supply.
    If you have 2 MB CHIP RAM in the Amiga 500 Plus, some games won't run till you install Fast RAM even if 2 MB should be more than enough ...

    I think the Zip100 Plus is switchable from parallel port interface to SCSI. I have dedicated SCSI Zip drives, as well as newer USB and Firewire versions. Havent had a parallel model since the mid 1990's when they were all the rage and a wonderful improvement over spanning files across stacks of floppies.

    Congratulations on 10k, Glen. Great job, man. You really are one of the great, it has really been a learning experience watching your videos and I do find myself rewatching them from time to time. So I also decided to become a patron of yours (using my actual name) as a sort of thanks. I have already watched this once but I wanted to watch again because I just had to comment on some of the donations. But before that again, congratulations on hitting 5 digits.
    I need to start watching Gadget's channel more. I know there is also a clone of the Innovation SSI-2001, a SID card for the ISA slot. The 8-Bit Guy had a clone on his channel many years ago but I haven't been able myself to find one, maybe someone else knows. Not many games support this card but Ultima VI is one of them; BattleTech: The Crescent Hawk's Revenge is another if I am not mistaken.
    You know, I have had two thoughts: You had that Commodore case about which you once speculated if you could mod it to fit an Amiga motherboard. Ever since you build the 2000 EATX I thought you had scrapped that idea but now with the A2090 SCSI controller that idea came back to me. I'm pretty sure it's not it though so I am waiting with excitement about this new project.
    I had no idea that the Amiga parallel port wasn't 100% the same as on the PC. So now I might need one of those boards myself for an experiment I'd like to try on that platform.
    I really love the socket 370 Pentium IIIs. So if it's really only the caps keeping your board from working then by all means try and recap it, I would definitely be interested in seeing that. :)
    That TF360 is beautiful. But for me it'd be a purchase in stages as the price of 68060s is absolutely bonkers.
    I have grown an affection for vintage SBCs. I have managed to find a few but they are Pentium 1 and newer. ISA ones are a lot more expensive in my experience. I have however, yet to see one that didn't have onboard VGA so these two boards of yours are very interesting to see. And again also something I am looking forward to see on the channel in the future. I think the PS2 port on that bracket is a keyboard port and not a mouse port but I'm not sure as I know that some backplanes have an AT keyboard connector.
    The Sinclair QL is a beautiful machine. I was watching a Jay Miner interview or talk he had and he mentioned that at one point someone wanted to put a 68008 in the Amiga as the 68000 was a bit more expensive. Obviously that did not happen and the price of the 68000 went way down but it does make you wonder what if the QL had a 68000 and maybe crucially a 3.5" floppy disk drive instead of microdrives. I don't think it would outperform either the Amiga nor the ST but it is possible it would have the cheapest 16 bit personal computer and could have seen some people going for it. That would have been an interesting scenario. I also had no idea that accelerators for the QL were a thing so going from a 68008 to a 68020 will surely make the machine fly. Well, it will be faster for sure. There are QL emulators for the Amiga like QDos4Amiga just in case you want to experiment with that too. I found an old website which sold a CD with a lot of QL emulators but all the links seem to be dead so I don't know if that CD is still available.
    That Resound 2 sound card is great. It's by TexElec and TexElec has a lot of interesting cards. I believe you got a PS/2 in your motherlode many years ago. If you still have it, then TexElec sells MCA sound cards for that machine.
    Oh, that Just CPC 128K is indeed a clone of the CPC 6128! That is an awesome board.
    OK, this was way longer that I meant it to be, congratulations again, Glen. And to borrow from a certain podcast: and now I will shut up.

    • @CRG
      @CRG  4 місяці тому +1

      Thank you for the support both here any on patreon, it genuinely means a lot to me.
      I know I bang on about Gadgets videos a lot but they are such a treasure trove of information and you'll also not meet a nicer guy so yes I highly recommend his content. A SID card in an ISA slot sounds interesting, I don't remember that one from The 8-bit guy but I must look it out.
      That old commodore case is still kicking around and still has its heavily corroded motherboard in there. I was thinking about it a few nights ago and wondering if I should pull it out and give it a bath in vinegar and IPA just to see how bad it really it. I did consider that case for the EATX but that board is way to big to fit in it. It wasn't the plan for the A2090A but you are making me think. I'll certainly consider it but I'd need to get the measuring tape out.
      As for the parallel port, I also had no idea it was missing some signals but if you like, Andi sent me a spare set of boards so drop me a PM over on patron or discord and I'll send them onto you.
      The socket 370 board, for all it is I'll order the caps and we can certainly try it. Will be hilarious if that brings it back though after being screwed to my wall for a couple of years. I will need to try and find the jumper configuration for it though, I'm fairly sure I pulled a few off it at one point.
      The 360 is something I've been after for the longest time and I'm so grateful to get one but yes the price of an 060 is getting silly now. I'll probably just go for another LC or EC chip.
      The 2 SBCs will be featuring in videos very soon as I've been wanting to get back into PC stuff and these have absolutely peeked my interested. Why are they not working!
      The QL is indeed a beautiful machine but I really don't know the first thing about it. It will be featuring in videos at some point but I do need to do a lot of homework first. It is really interesting to see the 68008 chip but then the accelerator with the 32bit 68020 chip on there. At this stage though I'm not even sure what software makes use of the accelerator. A 3.5" floppy drive I'm sure would have helped the QL massively but from what I've seen the UI of it is still perhaps more stuck in the 8 bit computing world. As I say though I still need to do a lot of homework on the subject before trying to put out a video.
      The Resound 2 is an awesome looking card and I'm intending on putting it into the current project box. The PS/2 is unfortunately away now but that's good to know for the future should I ever get another MCA machine.
      The CPC128k / 6128 clone is another one of those things I need to read up on and I need to think of a home for it. Any suggestions?
      I don't mind the long comments, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch the video and write the comment but I too now have been writing for a while so I think I'll shut up now also 😅

The obvious one is the next line "is this the friend you were telling me about" but the more I think about it and with the 10k subs special in mind I think I'll say that the reason I put this stuff here, the reason I have this channel is to share my love for these machines and you might say to save these moments in time so they aren't washed away like tears in the rain.

    The MESR-100, while certainly functional, isn't best suited for in-circuit measurements or testing SMD caps due to it's short leads/alligator clips. Does a fine job out of circuit through, long as you hold your zero. Those (VRM?) caps you tested in circuit might've been giving a false reading as they may be connected to the neighboring caps in parallel, or the otherwise circuit itself could be introducing inaccuracies. I however really like the MESR-100 and keep it around as it gives dynamic, real-time measurements which can be useful at times. Just make sure you discharge any caps prior.
    If you ever decide to treat yourself, the Peak Atlas ESR70 Gold is phenomenal. Make sure you get the needle test probes.

    • @CRG
      @CRG  4 місяці тому +1

      I'll keep that in mind, thanks. Not hard to pull caps like the one I showed for testing and considering its bulged I'd be fairly confident its bad anyway so probably needs to come out. Will be interesting to see if all that board needed is the caps replacing.

    That's not PC Chips, it's Chips And Technologies, a company which specialised in PC chipsets and bus interface chips which was acquired by Intel in the late 1990s. They were a second source for some of the support chips in microchannel PS/2 systems.

    About the hard drive, and it bothers me for such a long time: why on Earth do drive manufacturers think that NOT writing the capacity on the drive is a good idea? And when they somehow DO write on them in the later times, it is the smallest font size hidden in the middle of other text. The drives do have a type number sticker which corresponds the capacity, but you have to get Google or a magnifier to know...

    • @CRG

    Ref the old Amiga drive. Do you have an XT PC card? If so then maybe image using DD in linux. Linux can mount Amiga partitions, bit also DD’ed images will mount with Zulu SCSI. I used Ubuntu to image my old Amiga IDE drive and now have all partitions mounted on on my A4000 using a Zulu SCSI.

    for imaging. get it connected to a computer running linux and use dd to image the drive. then you can use that image in uae and extract the data. or maybe even mount it in linux if it has one of the more common filesystems like ffs.
