    Sometimes the problem is the owner of the car not doing oil changes or any maintenance at all.

    It looks like you caught this before the valves bent but now that it's running again, were you able to keep the sludge from gumming up the tensioner and the timing chain oiler nozzle again?

    Is there any way to clean out an engine like this? Any kinda oils that can reverse some of the effects of not proper oil changes? My sister car has no compression, took off valve cover, looks like a varnish convention in there. I think the timing is off, the chain has slipped, it is loose at certain points in rotation. I'm hoping there is a way to realign the sprokets. Thinking the only way to find TDC is put a stick in cylinder 1 and rotate until it is at highest point, then take off tensioner to loosen chain and see if I can move the top two valve shafts back to alignment. I'm not going to open up the engine down below, too big a job for me.

    I have the same issue on my 2007 Vue. The car was running before teardown. I have the cover off the front, and the cam cover removed. I can't seem to get the cams oriented to the key location on the crank per instructions. Could this be due to the fixed guide being broken?

    There is a oiler that sprays oil on the chain, if it is the wrong size ( older 2.2 ) and not keeping oil changed, that may attribute to a sloppy chain. I bought a chain kit and spray oiler was a little bigger orifice. Funny thing the chain and tensioner was just fine, shoes were fine, I was a bit nervous with over 100K miles on the 04 and decided to replace chain. I currently have a 2.2 with 247K miles, really has me nervous, but is very quiet. My cars are an 03 Cavalier 247K miles and an 04 Cavalier with now 150K Very very curious how the innards look with this kind of mileage. Thinking this summer will pull the 247K motor and do a rebuild. Other than the chain scaring me these seem like a very good motors.

    Over half of you dont know anything about engines lol. Losing oil pressure just isnt cause by an incorrect install of a filter lol. That sludge is the #1 cause right there. Blocking all the oil passage ways and oil squirters to getting oil to the components. And use full synthetic oil and CHANGE it every 6000 miles, or conventional oil then change it every 3000. Ecotec's are good lil motors people just dont know how to take care of their sht

      Colton Curry I just changed the oil in my girl's car it's funny that you said something like this the oil filter has a tiny nipple on the end of it when you stick it back into it's place. I was having trouble put the new filter in when I realized that the nipple had broke off and had to pull it out with a pair of pliers so I'm guessing something like that might have caused build up in the motor. She is having the same problems with the timing chain it doesn't look like the timing chain kit cost much but who knows on how labor is going to be

    I got an 06 Saturn Vue 2.2 ecotec there is really no strange ticking maybe just a little bit but it whines so I took off the top cover where the spark plugs and everything go there 10 mm bolts and I can see the roller rockers the cams the oil is spouting real good the valve springs and all that look real good it almost sounds like it's either coming from the bottom like one of the cassettes down at the bottom of the engine when I rev it it doesn't have its full power and I have heard some people say that they can jump time but I would think that if it jumped time a tooth or more you wouldn't have 180 something pounds of compression per cylinder compression is magnificent so I'm thinking that either a year is one making the noise hence causing the low power or it's something in one of them cuz that's at the bottom of the engine that I can't see I'm just going to replace the whole timing chain gears and cassettes

    This engine is used to race NHRA. It's a very good engine. But it requires maintenance like very other engine. People don't change their oil, replace the water pumps or timing chain tensioner. It's preventive maintenance. Get the GM sport compact performance build book.

    New timing chain kit($130) comes with all guides and new tensioner. And head gasket kit($125) comes with all seals and gaskets from block up. New head bolts($80) and cam gear bolts($25) since they are try. Since you have the head off, new water pump($40), machine,clean,pressure test head($150), plugs, coolant and fresh oil&filter($65) and that's using quality name brand parts. Prices are half using generic no name ebay parts.

    Did you watch the timing chain slapping against the upper bracket while it was running? If so, how did you run the engine with the valve cover removed? Doesn't the valve cover hold the plug coils?
    Also, a good idea would be to check the balance shaft tensioner for gunk and the chain oiler nozzle to make sure it's not plugged. Mine was plugged and my engine had much less gunk than that one. I did an engine oil flush when I bought it at 170K and that didn't clear the plugged oil nozzle. My chain and plastic parts were OK but I'm always concerned with lack of oil changes causing the plastic parts to get brittle.

    its a common complaint but I have owned 3 cars with this engine. One car reached 300,000 and it was electrical issues that made me get rid of it. My neighbor also has a 2,2 DOHC with over 300,000 and running strong. Maybe it was replaced before he got it . My saturn L200 i have now runs good but doesnt idle as smooth as it should even with tuneup and fuel filter OE replaced and regular advanced full synthetic oil changes. I also often put lucas tune up in a bottle or upper cylinder lubricant before fill up. Makes a noticeable difference in gas mileage and car runs smoother when I use it. It runs fine and I have a 40 min commute to work all highway. So it is a very dependable car. No leaks or engine light. Because of the long commute to work I change oil once a month with quality oil and oil filter. I also regularly check oil fluid levels a few times a week. But still doesnt idle as smooth as i would like. feels like it is missing slightly. It has 129,000 on it now. Wonder if i should pay the 1200 to replace timing chain it just in case

    I've got to add my two cents worth. I have a 03 Ecotec Cavalier with I SHIT YOU NOT!!!!!! 248,000 miles. Just got back from a visit to our Daughters in WA. about 1100 mile trip. Is the original chain shoes and tensioner. Yeah I can't believe it myself. Engine change is planned in another month, before this high miler blows. Water pump original, alternator was original. I did change alternator before we went on our trip, still working fine as I installed into our "spare" Cavalier. Brushers are really worn down. Phew really scratching my head on this engine.

    I'm working on a 2004 Saturn l300 that will crank but not start. After eliminating a lot of other stuff. The only thing left is to check the timing I think.... Can the timing cause the car to not start? Please tell me reasons why if you can. Thanks.

    • @Lovetolivetruely
      @Lovetolivetruely 6 років тому

      Shao Lor thanks for your reply... I'll do the leak down test, which is about the only test I haven't done. I took off the valve covers and the chain seems like it's okay but I haven't taken off the timing cover.

    • @Lovetolivetruely
      @Lovetolivetruely 6 років тому

      Shao Lor Sorry no reply for a while but had to put the car on hold. I removed the timing cover yesterday to take a look at the chain it seems intact but I didn't remove the valve cover but will remove it in the morning... I need to know if the cams could be out of line as well or possibly the timing jumped how to reset them . I'll know more about what's going on with the chain and it's positions on the sprockets but for now I'm wondering about making sure the cams are properly aligned if nothing's wrong with the chain. I'm thinking there are some bad valves in cylinder 4 because of the very low compression compared to the other cylinders. I'll check the thingy you mentioned in an earlier comment.

      You can buy the whole kit. I did the timing chain and guides, the balance shaft and guides, water pump as the old water pump had a nasty plastic impeller, the thermostat. L61 GDI Holden (OPEL ASTRA) and the serpentine belt. As the car was 10yo when I purchased it and I suspect it was not serviced that well. Once you start pulling these engines apart you might as well goto town. I also replaced all the cooling hoses as they were from 2007. Saved myself AUD $2000. Parts for these are still easy to find but in a years to come this might not be the case.

    most likely the timing chain tensioner went slack when it lost oil pressure

    • @jollyrogers100
      @jollyrogers100 7 років тому

      The tensioner use spring force, not oil pressure.

    • @zoobydoo2518
      @zoobydoo2518 7 років тому +1

      Actually uses both. Spring force to keep things under control for starting then oil pressure takes over. Spring force is minimal so a bit of chain slack happens during starting at some parts of the revolution when the valve springs push the cams towards each other.
      See You tube " Ecotech timing chain tensioners old and new"
      Tensioner also has a ratchet action to prevent the chain from going slack enough to jump time...or so they say. When the chain goes slack long enough the chain slap breaks the upper part of the fixed guide and sometime breaks the bolt off or strips the threads in the head.
      There is a good, quick fix for a broken upper bolt. See UA-cam "Timing chain bolt fix"

    Looks like you need to run some kerosene threw that engine! Maybe a few times!!! Go figure, I ran into this video again & my decision stands on the kerosene but, I would have considered using kerosene with the old timing set up in place & of course, remove the oil pan to ensure that no plastic is in the oil pan & also to clear as much sludge as possible. fill it full of kerosene, fire it just for a sec, or even disable the ignition so that it cannot start & just cycle the kerosene then, id do several oil changes, one directly after the other!!! Also, If one wants that car to last & to clean out that sludge, Bump up the quality of oil & the frequency of oil changes! EVERY 1K MILES FOR THE NEXT 10K SHOULD HELP A BIT! SHOULD...
