Very informative and pleasant to watch the whole video! Somewhere along the line I missed what was initially wrong with this engine requiring a rebuild. Could you enlighten me please? Thanks much!
Where would one star it’s a Eco tech all of them are junk at about 125,000 miles at least you need to do timing chains and shit on them by 160,000 miles. They’re drinking 2 quarts every 400 miles so
mine (Z22SE) is leaking some oil and it's gathering just behind the oil filter, there is a crevice there. I wonder if it's the valve gasket. But it seems bone dry.
Tbh it seems more complicated than it is as long as you know basic knowledge about engines you could tear one apart and put it back together with minimal problems with reassembly.
Love the video!! it's going to help so much! you keep referring to "the manual" for all the torque specs and info. What one do you use and where do you get it?
Awesome video! What rebuild kit did you end up using? And you said you put new connecting rods in? Where did you get those? I know there is a TSB for connecting rods bending in these (destroyed my engine) I was just curious if there is a brand you recommend for avoiding that in the future
Everything came from Rockauto. The kit was mostly Enginetech. I can't recommend this kit though. The head gasket didn't seal and the injector o-rings were too small. I would recommend Mahle for metal components and Fel-Pro for gaskets if it's available.
I was following the book and noticed it looks like you let the tensioner spring out instead of resetting it. I've noticed issues when I set it and try to to suggest the book does and set it. Would you just purchase it in sprung?
How much dose that motor weigh with out head on it doing one for my wife that the timmer chain guide broke in a million parts and a bolt was found on the bottom where the oil pain meets that 2nd main crank case trying to see if we could lift it out by hand no life thinking its about 350 400lbs at most
That's a good question, I don't know the answer to. I think bending over the car to lift something that heavy would be very difficult. A cheap engine hoist costs around $100 and would save your back.
@@waterfrommatthias5601 They are very similar engines with minor differences. What I recommend is getting a manual that shows you the torque specs and assembly sequence. Even a cheap Haynes manual should have that information. You can use this video as a visual aid if needed. But none of the parts in the description will match your 2013. Hopefully that helps
You can replace the rod bearings by removing the oil pan. It's relatively simple to do. Make sure the crankshaft journal is still good before putting on the new bearings or it will have all been for nothing. A damaged crankshaft would need to be replaced.
You'll have to remove the oil pan and the bed plate. If the engine isn't upside down, you'll have to remove the crank too or it'll want to fall out when the bed plate is removed.
This is NOT how to lap the valves at all don't do it this way. Your not breaking the glaze you are creating a matched surface so it seals and this is supposed to be a back and fourth motion with slight advancements 360 degrees circle.
I am overhauling my granddaughter's 2008 Cobalt 2.2L, this video series was perfect!!!
best 4 cylinder gm ever made
I prefer the old iron Duke 2.5

Your wrong. Them are some of the worst 4 cylinders trust me I'd know. I race em. I think the 2.2 pushrods are way better then eco techs
Thank you bro, best video ever, I feel like I have less anxiety, trying to rebuild this engine now
This was a great rebuild series. I would like to see a Ford BOSS or coyote next. Thanks for good videos
Good job walking through everything step by step.
@@floydbaker3333 Thanks! This was a fun project 🙂
One of the best and most informative videos I’ve come across. Great job and thank you sir
@@chrisogilvie2185 Thanks! Glad this video is helpful 🙂
I’m looking to change my piston rings on my 2013 terrain soon. Which rings did you use?
@@chrisogilvie2185 These were from Engine Tech. They are a decent brand. But if possible I would recommend Mahle/ Clevite or Hastings.
@@ValleyMobileAutomotive awesome thanks for the advice ! 😁
Great video! 07 hhr has a ticking sound at 230k mi, might just rebuild for fun w a turbo

Thanks JRobert! So, this Cobalt's journey starts here...

Bought my 2.4 na cobalt SS new in 2006…220,000 miles and still running strong. Only problem is the oil cooler is starting to leak.
great instructional video.
tks
this is the funniest video shop has seen..., thanks for the laughs.. sent this video to a few other shops so they can watch it🤣🤣🤣🤣
How about giving constructive criticism instead of trying to seem like you're better. Loser.
Say you a cocky pos without saying it
Video was very helpful. Did you reuse the connecting rod and main girdle bolts or did you replace them? I cannot find them anywhere
The handle is the piece you used on the first part of removing
Nice !

Mine had a pinhole in the plastic oil filter cover that let oil seep out under pressure.
Just for your information the handle is the other part you use First it slides down over it
Tbh it seems more complicated than it is as long as you know basic knowledge about engines you could tear one apart and put it back together with minimal problems with reassembly.

How do you know that the tensioner goes in that groove when you're screwing it in
Would you recommend using copper spray-a-gasket by permatex on the cylinder head gasket?
@@JustinMitchell-g6v Good question. It's not needed. Getting a quality brand gasket is all you need 👍

I cant find any 2.4 ecotec engine overhaul videos on UA-cam. Is this 2.2 ecotec rebuild applicable to rebuilding a 2.4 ecotec engine?
They look so similar; I assume the displacement is the only difference?
