Vancouver's Georgia Straight Magazine listed the "best" Vancouver albums over the last 50 years and didn't list a single Destroyer album. Hard to take the magazine seriously after that. Dan Bejar is arguably Vancouver's greatest musician.
markatsvensson The editor didn't want to besmirch his name by putting him in something more mainstream. The music is more treasured when found by chance. To find it in some weekly magazine is akin to buying a Hollywood map seeking stars.
2:03 Foam Hands 5:25 Chinatown 9:31 Streets of Fire (but see banter with audience at 8:48) 11:41 European Oils 15:44 Your Blood 20:36 Savage Night at the Opera 25:11 Farrar, Stratus, and Giroux (Sea of Tears) (but see banter with audience at 24:26) 29:11 Helena
I saw him last week in North Carolina. It's one of the best shows I've ever seen (I am 51, I've seen a lot). A remarkable song writer, a captivating performer.
'Farrar, Strauss and Giroux' makes me tear up EVERY TIME. Thank you for the catharsis, Mad Spaniard. I've been listening to his first 3 albums on heavy rotation this week, and am delighted to find a live show, with beautifully shot and edited footage to boot.
It truly is a beautiful set. The pickathon 2014 performance has this same "quiet personal time with Bejar" feeling to it, and it has a bunch of songs from the early records too (to the heart of the sun..., virgin with a memory, helena, farrar... and streets of fire). Sadly it is not a public video, so you'll need the exact link to watch it, but you easily get it if you look on the destroyer subreddit.
I like that little bit in the middle of Chinatown that ended up becoming part of Solace's Bride. I remembered hearing that part when I was first listening to Poison Season and wondering why it felt familiar. Now watching this again I'm like 'ayyyyyyyyy'
There's a live solo acoustic version of Bejar playing Chinatown on UA-cam somewhere, even before Kaputt was released in 2011- it was dubbed a new song in that particular performance - and that part from Solace's Bride was already there. Cheeky.
From the first time I saw this it's been a couple year now. It took me a some time appreciating the fun band versions. Destroyer has become such a treasure to me it's amazing, really..
It took me about 12 years to really get into Destroyer, but all of a sudden, I agree. I bought some Destroyer albums in 2009 - 2011, but I didn't really get into the music until just before Christmas 2021. I first heard of Dan Bejar in 2008 / 2009, and I saw him with The New Pornographers on June 13, 2010 in Columbus, Ohio. He was off stage when not singing his own songs, or playing additional guitar.
Am I correct in that this is not the full length of the concert? I couldn't tell it being cut anywhere from watching nor listening, but I assume he performed for longer than 26 minutes. "Helena" also sounds to be from that night, since it's played without a plectrum. Amazing video though, been listening to it atleast once a week for the last month, month and a half, and spectacular musician. Can't wait for "ken" to come out and to see him in Lille.
Jack Fay I also know requests are frowned upon but I wish he would release just one more album like This Night or Streethawk. I think he writes songs that give him longer breaks to drink alcohol these days.
Destroyer is really underrated! What an amazing band.

It fits so naturally into Chinatown that I didn’t notice that. Thanks for pointing that out.

he's kind of like the coolest nicest mean condescending guy
This is so gorgeous I'm deeply appreciative time was spent to put this film together
+Charles Griffin Gibson thanks so much Charles, was a lot of fun to shoot, direct and edit, big Destroyer fan :)

Amazing! The shot frames are also so good!
What I'd give for a live acoustic album
City of Daughters...kinda?. Five Spanish Songs also has that acoustic and personal vibe in some songs
Seriously, that version of Streets of Fire is some World Heritage shit.
I'm really happy to be Mr. Bejar's namesake.
Saw this genious a couple years back. God i wish i were able to see this performance, because this sounds like nothing else. 13:30. Jesus.
love this guy godamn
OH man Destroyer is like.... Dan Bejar is like... damn! This is great! T__T .. !!!!!
These songs are perfect to play and sing alone until you suddenly fall asleep (most probably holding the guitar)
eduard lazarus
That! I’ve done that!

Is there Audio anywhere for the rest of this performance? Such a special one thank you for capturing!!
Oh no! Was it longer? I would DIE for having just a little more of this absolutely brilliant performance.

Dan taps deep.
Chinatown =)
Hippy Ted Mosby vibes in the beginning
Excellent performance!✌️❤️ Yonge street sucks. He should have been hanging out queen street west, or china town Kensington market .
OK -- he's not in National Treasure Category like Neil Young or Rush, but holy shit is he in the rearview.
@@alexhaxan I meant the comment as a compliment, as in "approaching." Also: no. He's very, very good, though.
Rush. Young. Cockburn. Destroyer! Bare naked ladies
song at 23:30?
Jack LaMotta Savage Night at the Opera
muchas gracias José
I wonder why he vowed to stop playing guitar ?
Really wish he opened better songs, the set gets ALOT better after European Oils. Still great altogether however!
