Fun fact: naoto was planned to be a guy who was mistaken a lot for being a girl but was changed to a girl but the fact that people mistook her for the opposite gender still remained
Thanks, I didn't know that. It makes the beginning of the confrontation really interesting then: like the 1st draft was for the revelation to be: "Naoto has a childish view of what it means to work in/alongside law enforcement and the motivations of the people who do," and then the final draft was: "Most of that is still true, which is within Naoto's ability to control, but it's compounded by the 'just-barely-unspoken' sexism in law enforcement generally and Japan in particular, which is outside of Naoto's control." It's hard to say which is ultimately more apropos to the story's central theme of "How People View Themselves is Influence by How Their Society Views Them, Even When They Factually Know Better," as the Male Naoto could have turned into a brutal takedown of the shota stories that make up the bulk of Pop Japanese Fiction. On the other hand, Female Naoto addresses the more subtle nuances of sexism that have no easy resolutions. Laws and oversight don't necessarily correct people's preconceived biases, especially when they're reinforced by such thorough idolization of certain archetypes. Naoto's shadow even tells her that none of her personal heroes, at least within her desired profession, are women.
man, out of all the shadows, naoto's has to be my favorite. the way she speaks, and the fact that everything about the situation was well-written enough, not appearing as half-assed or overly cutesy and squishy. i like that a lot
I also like how this scene sort of confirms that to an extent, somebody doesn't have to specifically say "You're not me" in order for a Shadow to take it's true form. Chie calls out to try to prevent Naoto from saying that, but even then she already believes it fully and that's enough for Naoto's Shadow to fully take form.
Interesting that Naoto apparently had no trouble at all putting up with her Shadow when alone, but the moment other people enter the room to witness this scene, Shadow Naoto suddenly goes hard mode on her.
It probably realised “There are others in here? If they interfere I cannot commence the operation. No more fooling about: I must resort to the cold hard truth.”
I feel like that's because Naoto herself is probably quite aware of her shadow, probably a good long while before this encounter. Therefore, she's probably quite used to it and knows how to at the very least get it to shut up. But when a bunch of people that are strangers to you, are suddenly exposed to that side of you, it would freak anyone out.
I liked how up until 4:08 Naoto was trying to keep up her facade of being a male by continuing to deepen her voice until she was pushed too far by her shadow self she just throws it all to the wind.

I still love that unlike in past dungeons where the victim is begging their shadow to stop by the time you get to them, naoto is just like "ah, took you long enough"
Just as Kanji represents ambiguous sexuality/bisexuality, Naoto represents ambiguous gender. The thing about both of them is that it doesn’t matter what box you put them in or label them, they are what they are. Does Kanji’s sexuality change whether Naoto is male or female? No...because she’s ambiguous. It just means Kanji likes people who look and act like Naoto does lol which is both male and female at the same time. It’s very complex...and very compelling
While I agree with Kanji's sexuality being ambiguous, you do realize that Naoto's whole deal wasn't that she wants to be a man, or identifies as one. But rather, that she pretends to be one because that's the only way she is able to succeed in her workplace. Therefore, making Naoto an actual man would change her entire arc.
@@bluebird1914 Maybe I didn't make that clear, but yes, that's what I was trying to say. Naoto's story arc is about the physical expression of gender, a different discussion from Kanji's, but their stories influence each other. Naoto's arc was not about sexual attraction or inner confusion, but rather about being seen for her keen mind, and, to that end, floats between the binaries of male and female (which makes her ambiguous, because on first glance you would accept her as either male or female). Kanji represented sexual ambiguity (attraction) and Naoto represented ambiguous gender (which is entirely about outer appearance and presentation, not the inner self). TLDR I think we're on the same page :D
I like how the group was like "nooo don't say you're not me" when Naoto literally started the convo with "You wear the same face as me... It's as if you're implying we're implying we're one and the same. But the difference between me and you is..." like it's so funny that the fight didn't start right then and there
This game hits the hardest topics with it's main theme, and even though I never played the game, the anime gave me a good idea of the things this game talks about
Interesting how Naoto had such an inferiority complex over being a female in a male-oriented occupation, yet Chie is easily able to decide she wants to join the same field by becoming a police officer. Could it be because of Naoto that she doesn't see her gender as an obstacle? Man...it's a good thing Naoto was never on Tumblr...the SJWs there would have her convinced that being a female detective is a hopeless cause.
Tristan Wong be happy that you don’t know about either them or their counterparts and the childish war between both of them. No matter what you watch, one side will always feel offended and so the bullshit war keeps going on
I was waiting for this confrontation. I wanted to see how a highly intelligent person talks to their shadow. It's great the shadow is just as intelligent as Naoto herself. I thought that Naoto wouldn't immediately fall for emotional manipulation, and she doesn't at first. But the shadow, having equal intellect, knows how to build a case, how to build an argument and use that to tear down Naoto's logic so that she can get to the heart of the matter and get Naoto to reject her.
The anime had a better voice. Here its debatable whether Naoto is male or not. In the anime she has a deeper voice making a bit more believable that she is a guy.
I remember introducing my friend to persona 4 then when he sent me a picture of Naoto saying he looks cool I was like "Yeah, HE is pretty cool I guess"
Hey, I'm surprised you went with the full team. Naoto is the only boss with Kunino-Sagiri that I did with only Yu and a reflecting Persona(phys reflect for Naoto(Rangda) and lots of elemental repels for Kunino-Sagiri). Doing it with the whole team felt like more of a hassle to me. But I was playing P4, not P4G. Is the fight different here?
@@KTam853 Well, we can still use her as the model for that hypothetical scenario (although, it certainly helped that the repressed thoughts that formed Shadow Futaba were positive.)
I remember when I first played through this game with my friend. He kept insisting Naoto was a guy even when I was sure she wasn’t. After Mitsuo’s dungeon, he mentioned something about doing HER dungeon. I got him to clarify that he was talking about Naoto, then told him his mistake. He was pretty mad at himself, but I was already sure that was the case
A shame, such a good scene. Never really put it all together when I was a kid but when I played the PC re-release I was able to grasp the themes the game has
2:16 Ummm... ever read Miss Marple Naoto? Then again she's probably only grew up with Japanese detective novels which are obviously lacking in female ace detectives so it wouldn't be out of possibility.
Damn if only Naoto knew about Miss Marple. But even then, Poirot is the more famous one, and I've not seen many people that aren't big fans of crime mysteries talking about Marple's stories, so I guess not much changes at the end of the day
@@joaoassumpcao3347 It has come to my attention that there is an anime based on Poirot and Marple tales and it ran between 2003 and 2004, it is also apparently quite accurate to the source material...
The anime version was better. The voice sounded a lot more like a guy and it was a lot more sinister. This one really sounds like a girl and sound very dramatic rather than scary.
For any of those who have trouble identifying themselves in modern day society, just remember, you don't have to go through surgery or hormone treatment to change who you biologically are. Just follow Naoto's example and face yourself, accept it, and move forward.
The reason why people go through hormones and sex reassignment is to alieviate gender dysphoria though. The whole reason why trans people exist is because their brain developed one way, and their body developed another way in the womb. and frankly, it's easier to change your body than to change your brain's entire wiring and chemical composition. Being transgender is not a choice, simply put, and transgender people are alieviated from the side effects of being developed wrong in the womb through transitioning. Women and men are treated differently, and identifying as the opposite gender, while being treated as your birth gender fucks you up big time mentally. People perceive you as someone that you aren't, and it's awful. Simply put, no. Do not condone the writing of naoto. It's piss poor writing on trans people. Albiet that this game was made in the early 2000s, and trans related information was not available as readily as it is now, but that doesn't excuse the fact that it's mismanagement of a transgender character. If this were a real situation, none of naoto's issues would be solved. In fact, they would be worsened. Accepting the fact you are born female is one thing, but denying yourself a means to feel at ease with both your body and society is a complete different thing, and his shadow probably would have went haywire and killed him.
@@syliic934 It is not at all mismanagement of a transgender character, especially as Naoto is not transgender. The issues she faces are readily apparent-and none of the issues have to do with gender dysphoria or transgenderism. It is tragic that you write, "none of Naoto's issues would be solved" and that "they [her issues] would be worsened" if she accepted herself when _acceptance of herself would be (and indeed was) the _*_only_*_ detail that eliminated all of these issues_ . Please do not write "him" in reference to Naoto; she is female.
SYLIIC I think Naoto's issue is a bit different from that. This isn't about Naoto being a man in a woman's body. Naoto simply wants to be seen as man so she won't be belittled by those around her for being a woman. She also believes that she can never truly be the detective she wants to be as a woman. She is a woman at heart but it's pressure from others and herself that's making her not want to be one. These issues, while similar, don't fall under the same umbrella. Especially as Naoto is not transgender. "You were never male to begin with." The operation, while alluding to transgender procedures, actually refers to Naoto's 'disguise'. She wears male clothing and compresses her chest. She hasn't actually become a man. Further evidence exists in the Dancing games that this is what Naoto wants, as she's wearing clothing that makes her feminine figure more pronounced than before. She is now very comfortable in her own body. That's not to say if you truly feel that are a man or a woman and you are not that you shouldn't go through such a procedure or that pressure should prevent you from doing what you believe is right for you. It's just this is not Naoto's issue. In a way, it's the reverse. Pressure isn't making Naoto remain a woman, it's making her want to be seen as a man in spite of what she might really want.
Parker Peters Naoto didn’t suffer from gender dysphoria, she was just influenced by media into thinking good detectives have to be men. Do not compare her issue with transgenderism.

That damn cry, I mean shit, even her shadow makes me want to protect her, best girl confirmed
I like how the group was like "nooo don't say you're not me" when Naoto literally started the convo with "You wear the same face as me... It's as if you're implying we're implying we're one and the same. But the difference between me and you is..." like it's so funny that the fight didn't start right then and there
I love the way Naoto says "Iiiiii am a shadowwww."
4:09 Naoto's true voice coming through.
11:54 *Shadow Yukiko crying in the background*
Also HUGE sick burn on societal prejudice there. That one hit way closer to home than I would've liked.
Andrew Smith also 11:03 *Shadow Kanji crying in the background*
+Dragon Ball Gap what does it mean???
+Dragon Ball Gap ooh, so "crying in the background" is some kind of proverb..
Yosua Nabara Shadow Yukiko "Cried on the background" because Naoto wanted to do EXACTLY what she opposed to with all her strength
+Mr. TeM yeah i get that, its just at first i thought the shadow is literaly crying..
I like Naoto's story here.
This game hits the hardest topics with it's main theme, and even though I never played the game, the anime gave me a good idea of the things this game talks about
Shadow naoto : you’re a girl !
Kanji : I’m not gay...*I’M NOT GAY GUYS !*
Reading this with their voices in mind has made this comment even funnier.
Clap, clap. Give a round of applause for this is a moment of celebration.
SOUND THE HORN
The shadow sounds like the mom from my life as a teenage robot
The Magic Blade XJ9 with that weird but funny accent
The Magic Blade Fuck, I miss that show.
Naoto Shirogane is not just my Favourite Persona Character, but also one of my favourite Video Game characters.
"Are you sick of yourselves too?"
I'd rather not go through any procedures if you're the one conducting it.
Here comes the men in black
Interesting how Naoto had such an inferiority complex over being a female in a male-oriented occupation, yet Chie is easily able to decide she wants to join the same field by becoming a police officer. Could it be because of Naoto that she doesn't see her gender as an obstacle?
Man...it's a good thing Naoto was never on Tumblr...the SJWs there would have her convinced that being a female detective is a hopeless cause.
What's an SJW?

@@kleinn7659 oh ok thx
FireMinstrel I think it has to do more with her age sence that was brought up more than gender
Tristan Wong be happy that you don’t know about either them or their counterparts and the childish war between both of them. No matter what you watch, one side will always feel offended and so the bullshit war keeps going on
3:08 Everybody's reaction, "WHAT THE FUUUU...?!?!?"
4:30 - Kanji may have a crush on you, but never insult a man who can punch his own Shadow 😂
I love her so much. And kanji so in love with her

better than guy that simping with a robot
lol Chie's persona is a sith
firepokemon2014 you should see her ultimate persona, she looks like Chie's original persona but has a black and white colour scheme
Red Kyber crystals are conduits for the Dark Side...
Well she did accept her true self, even the dark side (;
I wish every boss fight ended with them hugging their shadows. I just think that'd be really sweet.
I'm glad that the original P4 anime gone the extra mile and give us one with Yukiko's Shadow.
The anime had a better voice. Here its debatable whether Naoto is male or not. In the anime she has a deeper voice making a bit more believable that she is a guy.
Shaney Zamora and in the anime I had nightmares from shadow Naoto :)
yeah
She turned into Dr N Gin!!!
OH MY GOD lol
OMG XD
Or Buzz Lightyear with guns
Crash Bandicoot Reference? Crash Bandicoot reference.
N Gine.

I remember introducing my friend to persona 4 then when he sent me a picture of Naoto saying he looks cool I was like
"Yeah, HE is pretty cool I guess"
16:33 the way yu sits straight down lmao
Easily one of the better fights in the game simply because she doesn’t take forever to defeat.
Am I the only one who thinks it's slightly amusing how Chie keeps bouncing around during battle?
If she doesn’t keep limber, she can’t Galactic Punt Golden Hands into the sun in battle now, can she?
her beta Battle idle animation is showed in game intro of p4 Vannila
yep i guess thats her beta Combat idle animation

I just realized naoto never says the "You're not me!" line

Fuck what da game said
18:19 The mood isn't the only thing you've killed, Adachi.
Is the fight different here?
its a lot easier in p4 golden
I'm curious as to what would happen if a person just up and accepted their shadow. Would the boss fight never happen?
Probably, yeah
Thomas Martinez yes
Kuro shii but Futaba is in persona 5 so it doesn’t work the same
@@KTam853 Well, we can still use her as the model for that hypothetical scenario (although, it certainly helped that the repressed thoughts that formed Shadow Futaba were positive.)
Doesn’t yu accept himself right away? Or he had nothing to hid to start with?
14:08 I am thou, thou art I. Thou have accepted thy true self. I am Sukuna-Hikona, god of medicine.
Teddie's summon attacks are so cute!!!
Naoto and Kanji's shadow hits hard for me really
Coming here just to see chie in her non-stop-moving battle animation
and cute naoto-
I remember when I first played through this game with my friend.
Liked the video for the costumes they re wearing! Men In Black
I was thinking Turks but that works too lol.
+-discontinued- Final fantasy 7 reference? They're the secret service either way
+-discontinued- I'm going to say none of the above. I was asking if it was a reference to final fantasy 7.
Shadow Naoto - serious and killer INSPECTOR GADGET !!!

When Kanji realized he wasn't gay,
He didn't realize that there are now girls who might be.

Imagine the controversy this would have been if the game was released nowadays.
Yeah because it fucking sucks
A shame, such a good scene. Never really put it all together when I was a kid but when I played the PC re-release I was able to grasp the themes the game has
Gender doesn’t matter it never has and it never will.
The only way to ever be happy is to learn to accept yourself.
This game has the right idea.
Everybody gangsta till the Men in Black fight Shadow Naoto
Man astro boy sure looks different from how l remember him
I KNEW IT HIS VOICE SOUNDED TOO FEMININE
*Pastel Pastries* her*
Her voice.
I already spoiled it for myself before even playing the boss. 😛.
Shadow Naoto: female Inspector Gadget...
No way. Gadget is a moron(even though that's why the show is so funny). If anything, Shadow Naoto is more like an evil Penny.
Shadow naoto is such a child
That's... kinda the point
Just furthers the point!
Man Naoto’s shadow really has to work for it.
Here come the mib
Sukona hikona: smol
Sukona hikona's sword: bigger than the chance Yu is a chad
2:16 Ummm... ever read Miss Marple Naoto?
Then again she's probably only grew up with Japanese detective novels which are obviously lacking in female ace detectives so it wouldn't be out of possibility.
they were classic novels, novels where female detectives were rare.
@@lily_the_bird Ummm could you reread your sentence please? It is way to vague for me to give a proper answer.
Shaney Zamora I think her sounding like a girl really proves the point though since the shadow is trying to get Naoto to accept that she is a girl.
I hated her anime voice.
The anime was better simply because the entire bloody thing went up in nuclear fire. Everything else is secondary.
In the Anime Narukami is op. He summoned Beelzebub (a lvl +70 persona) not at the finish of the game.
Cant believe she wears full on riot gear in the anime
Why is this the most relatable shadow in the game fuck being alone
a love the music in this game 😸
Who doesn't?
I do like how shadow naoto looks like a toy, playing again into the whole child wanting to grow up thing
Although her shadow still got the best of naoto, i like the fact that naoto was the one who had been more composture with all that conversation
Please do not act like you care, Parker Peters.
SYLIIC
I think Naoto's issue is a bit different from that.
"You were never male to begin with."
The operation, while alluding to transgender procedures, actually refers to Naoto's 'disguise'.
Shadow Naoto keeps making Joker Robot noises.
how can you be an ideal man when you are not a male to begin with?
