They took the player insert character and turned him into the beautiful weirdo and one of the series’ funniest characters. It’s so good, there’s a reason he’s rarely called “protagonist” over Yu and I think this series had a lot to do with that. The dub does a good job of accentuating his charismatic weirdness lol.
I just love how whoever localized the script of this anime clearly did not care of beating around the bush, in the game Chie and Yosuke only told kanji he looked "strange" next to Naoto, but in the anime they straight up told him he's Gay.
There are some in the game Specifically Yu's dialogue being Directly linked with the more Funny options When he got bit by Teddie at one point you can choose "I think I might Cry" In the anime this dialogue option goes into....... "I might be dying..........." Followed by Chie saying "No you're not" 😑
In game so many of the jokes and situation are sexual, super low hanging fruit. The anime is way funnier. Even just the anime style makes up for a lot of these stupid jokes, the way I’ll face myself unironically Starts playing when Kanji’s Shadow appears and half the party just wants to kill him and get it over with it’s so funny. Also the galactic punt for “ I don’t want to be the comic relief!” It’s hilarious(especially considering how gross the situation is frankly).

@Ryka I haven't watched persona 5 anime but playing the game I would think it would be less about friendship and more about heist plan and twist and turns, like in my head focusing just how smart and calculating the group and team leader are could get great result (bonus if you use some of James bond kind of music) Long story short less funny and more plot focused would help imo
The Persona 4 Anime and the Golden Edition were just excellent. They not only expanded upon Yu's character but they also added in extra comedy, addressed the social links and brought something new to enjoy that you didn't see in the video game. That is how you do an adaptation so it's familiar but you also get something unique so it can slightly separate itself form the video game.
AGREE, tbh P4 probably in my opinion have a lot of the best Spin-off and well as a fan I love the balance of Slice of life and the dark moments in it! People say it's not the best cause it ain't dark like the rest but for me it equally is but it just lao knows how to execute the good moments really well! P4 animation added so much fun and interesting stuff to the scenes. Whereas with p5 it just seems they by the books did exactly what was on screen in the games.
When I first got into Persona 4 I started with the P4G Golden game on the PS Vita. Than from there I went straight to the Persona 4 Anime. And I laughed so hard at how Hilarious this Anime is. I got me my friend into Anime. And he couldn't stop laughing at how good and funny Persona 4 is. I have such fond memories of this series. I can't stop bragging about how hilarious P4 is. Good times I had with this Anime and the video games.

The Persona series is the only series I love whether its in Japanese or English, in games or in animes... But I wished P5 the Animation was great as P4 the Animation, even P4 the Golden Animation was better
