- Screaming warm ups with Lochie of Alpha Wolf. Little changes make the biggest difference. It was sick hanging and watching these guys crush on The Hell We Create tour, looking forward to more craziness.
Prior to this video Lochie had already gone through his body and tongue stretches!

Lochie had already done his body/face/neck/tongue stretches before we jumped into this quick warm up! This is also the end of the tour so the warm up is shorter than would be recommended for one offs or your at home practice 😊
You really are a genius bro. I'd love for you to do a history on how you learnt/came up with these techniques. They seem random and crazy, but the end results are always spot on
A combination of a lot of things! Physical fitness, choir and classical singing, different types of speech therapy, and lots more! And learning more every day 😁
@@ExtremeVocalInstitute I really wish non-metal heads knew how technically demanding screaming is. Keep it up and thanks for the content
Can you do a "how to scream like Graveland" segment?
Alpha Wolf may be my favorite live band. Unreal energy.
Absolutely! Their live show is so great
Agreed, Their live energy is undeniable.
Agreed
Lochie standing there like “ima just go out and do what I do.” XD Alpha Wolf is sick xD
Lochie is a beautiful human being.
I've been practicing with your Practice Makes Progress video for almost a year now, and after I'm done warming up I feel like exactly what Lochie said "You don't try very hard but the sound gets amplified".
You're great David.
just saw them in Buffalo and his live vocals were fucking insane, one of the best bands I've seen live
Dude I appreciate this so much you have no idea. It's been 4 weeks since our last show and I've been working with you for those 4 weeks last nights show the whole band was like where the f did that come from 😂 extreme vocal institute ❤
This is great. Cool to see how it all comes together! 🎸
Man, his growls sound goood!
He’s a monster! Their live show is great if you haven’t caught them yet 😁
Really appreciate all the insight into these BTS warm-up exercises 🥰🙏 it’s sooo helpful for me!!! Thanks guyz!!! 👽
This looks like wizardry! I still haven't found my fry scream yet and have pretty much given up. I'm thinking I probably have some vocal damage that's preventing me from doing it. Still, it's magical to watch you get people to do this stuff! You're the GOAT.
Same boat man it sucks.
It's taken me two years of constantly trying to make noises, to get to the point where I can do it, it's not good but it entertains me. You can do this man, don't give up. Start small and quiet, that is better than not at all. I would have it one day and then spend weeks trying to make it work again when I started learning. There are so many things I still can't comprehend yet. Constantly record yourself on your phone. In my recordings from when I started I sound like a strangled cat. You can do it, if you think there is damage go see an ENT and have it checked, after that you know where you are at. Nothing wrong with finding out because you wanna learn screaming techniques, it's all just for fun why spend you life wishing you found out or not, wishing you spent time learning.
Fry scream is a tough one. If you want faster progress, I suggest learning to false cord scream, It's a lot easier and doesn't hurt your voice as much in my opinion. Never give up, man.
@@excelfan85 Damn dude, this is how you hype someone up! Thank you for this. It's amazing how toxic the extreme metal fanbase can be and yet David and Rilee have carved out this beautiful community of amazing people.
love your vids so much positive energy in your assistance for the dino noises
thank you for watching! 🙏🏽 positive vibes all day
This Dude give us Free Lesson by watching him on UA-cam, now im get better Technique, Thanks Teacher. A Hero without an Honor🔥🤟
I need this guy in my corner.. getting pretty good at home but lack confidence to perform in front of anyone but my young sons 😂
Getting over that mental hurdle can be so tough! You’ve got this though 💪🏽
@@ExtremeVocalInstitute thanks mate 😁
Man I guess I need to start watching your videos and trying some of these exercises. I used to be able to scream no problem (though I never had the widest range). But then I didn’t scream for about ten years and now I’m trying to make heavy music again and I can’t do it at all anymore! So frustrating. I thought it’d be like riding a bike but NOPE, I guess it’s a muscle I lost and need to get back into shape.
It’s a hard thing to explain how to do so I appreciate you analyzing it so deeply and explaining it probably the closest way possible.
Dang Charlie Puth is doing metal now?
Dam ur a great teacher
Christ, you're so good
🙏🏽🙏🏽
WOW
Whaaaa whaaaa wha!
You could make a groundbreaking vocal tutorial app... have you considered it?
We have online courses for exactly this!
I think I was at this show, he is wearing the same thing from in the videos I took
Lots of artists wear the same outfit on stage each night for consistency in performance videos for socials or just for ease of getting ready! This was at the Palladium in Worcester
@@ExtremeVocalInstitute lol that was a few days before the one i went to
Problem is with me. My voice gets scratchy a little and I get pretty dizzy
Beavis fire fire fire
This fry scream?
Or falsecord scream?
False cord!
Is this enough to do for normal practice as well? Or is it just for pre-show? Don't you have to do a kinda longer melodicall warm up before going at it as well?🤔😮
This is abbreviated because he’s done his stretches already and this is the end of the tour so his voice has already been “warm” from so many days in a row of use. Would not recommend for one off shows
@@ExtremeVocalInstitute Oh, ok, then I understand, but is it that if you have practiced for some days in a row you don’t have to warm up so extensively?🤔 And thank you!😀, and also THANKS ALLOT Because I have learned ALLOT ABOUT Metal Vocals through your videos!🤩🤘🏻🔥
i hear whales
Please do your research. There’s 0 evidence saying this can be done healthy in a sustainable manner. On the other hand there’s 100’s of studies showing how this kind of vocalization can cause nodules and is destructive. I wish we all could sing like this in our 60’s. This is how to literally end up hurting yourself and potentially permanently damaging the only instrument you can’t replace. Even Maynard James Keenan from tool said in a recent interview that he can’t even sing his harsh vocals anymore. going as far as to say it’s like he’s picking at a scab, hurting himself. He goes on to say that it’s basically impossible to sing that stuff at his age and having done it for years. I could go down the list to how many singers I’ve seen must change the way they sing or the key they sing in because of how unsustainable this kind of vocalization is over the years. Quit giving people the impression that they are the exception to the rule and that they can be the next Ronnie James Dio. don’t let this guy sell you on the idea that this method and style of vocalizing is sustainable over decades of time IT CANT. You must protect this one instrument that you can’t replace.
Harsh vocals can absolutely be done safely. Look at Corey Taylor for example, he lost his voice from doing them incorrectly with what is now called the “Iowa Scream” but since he changed his technique he’s been doing fine for over 20 years. Harsh vocals, if done incorrectly, can absolutely destroy your voice, but they can also be done safely. Using the proper techniques such as, not pushing, warming up your voice, and always staying hydrated are a must to stay healthy while doing it. Even Corpsegrinder from Cannibal Corpse and Nocturno from Darkthrone have been doing harsh vocals for well over 30 almost 40 years now. Constant touring can sadly be an issue for many people, performing harsh vocals almost every day for sometimes two months in a row can definitely take a toll on someone’s voice. There’s a lot of factors to take into consideration when discussing harsh vocals. Also the only research I can find on harsh vocals causing nodules is when done incorrectly such as pushing out your voice too much or straining. Everyone is also different and has a different voice. Harsh vocals is also decently niche and it’s not like there’s a lot load of research out there on it. So basically, take care of your voice, don’t over do it, and you’ll be fine
And here’s research articles discussing vocal health when using harsh vocals

@@Lowfe yea and i can name for more singers that have lost their voices due to this kind of vocalization than ones that can maintain it seriously over span of years in a healthy manner. look at burton from fear factory, or LaBrie from dream theater, or chuck from death who also said he had to change his style of screaming due to how destructive it was. Ive seen so many singers lose their voices to this than are still able to do it when theyre old.
@@Lowfe and im pretty sure Corey taylor was in kahoots with Melissa cross, a well know fraud in the music industry who uses pseudoscience to justify her detrimental shouting sessions.
@@amali9044yea and those 3 you named, weren't doing 90% of their vocals properly.
The proper learning is widely available nowadays.
Ppl are learning to not use all throat distortion from just pushing hard as you can.
