The Marine Corps has a number of qualifications for starting at E-2 (Eagle Scout, for example). Throw a meritorious promotion on that and POOF, E-3. Thaaaaaaat's why they're called Recruit now and not Private, because not all of them are truly privates. E always wondered; did graduating an E-3 make any difference? Other than a personal honor, did it make a difference in their tours? Did it take them longer to make E-4?
So all the marines that are graduating are wearing the tan top and blue pants. When do they get their black coat and blue pants like the ones standing up front?
Usually the ones wearing the dress blues during graduation day are the platoon guidons. I believe they are also the honor graduates of the platoon I think. Also one guidon will be the company honor graduate and is usually advanced to a Lcpl.
+xXD1MZXx your correct, the only ones that wears the full dress blues are the guidons for each platoon! Actually the choice of uniform is left up the choice of the Commanding General's discretion! SEMPER FI

Oh holy cow. Those in full dress blues are GUIDES. For graduation, the honor grads are the guides. The little red flags they carry are guidons. The rest of them are in dress blue C (or charlies). Dress blue D is with the short sleeve shirt. Marines during the summer months normally wear the camouflage uniform with sleeves rolled up and sometimes wear service C (green pants and short sleeve shirt). The song that the band is playing is also the same song that the Texas A&M marching band plays during a parade or during a halftime show. Did anyone notice that?

Generally the guide of each platoon is put up for a meritorious board towards the end of bootcamp. They compete against the other platoon guides. Since most platoon guides are already contract PFC's they will get Lance Corporal right out of bootcamp.
