  • The Death Star wasn't a great idea. It united the Rebel Alliance and gathered all of the empire's resources into one big fat target. So what should the empire have built instead of the Death Star. We look at the prices of some other cool purchases in this star wars alternative scenario.

    How about not spending a trillion credits and actually having a sustainable budget so that, you know, your Empire actually lasts a thousand years and doesn´t collapse like the USSR.

      And the best part is, Palpatine didn't learn a thing from the first death star's destruction. He started building a second, bigger death star immediately after. Such is the self-defeating nature of evil, I guess.

      Meme Man But the empire wasn’t in decline, it was doing fine. Endor was the rebellion’s last stand and they almost lost. It pretty much completely split apart after the emperor’s death rather than enter a period of decline. And the Soviet Union didn’t enter decline straight away after Stalin’s death nor did it have a massive planet-wide monopoly on production and resource acquisition the way the empire did in the galaxy. The two really are not comparable at all and I don’t think the empire was ever meant to be analogous to the Soviet Union.

    Hush, Thrawn was a military genius and one of the most capable commanders in the Imperial navy. His opinion in this matter does not count! BUILD THE GIANT DEATH-RAY SPHERES!!!!!

    • @ThePCguy17
      @ThePCguy17 7 років тому +7

      Those giant Death Ray Spheres were still so feared 30 years later that Leia said, desperately, "There's always a way to blow these things up." Because she knew that if there wasn't a way to blow it up, the resistance was finished, as both an idea and an organization. The idea of the Death Star was so scary to the rebels in Rogue One that they were tucking tail and running home when Jyn and her crew of morally gray good guys decided that a blaze of glory was a better way to die. The fact that the Death Star was destroyed so soon after its official unboxing was its actual undoing. Without that one engineer who didn't want it to succeed, the galaxy would have been ruled, quite effectively, through fear. The message of the Death Star was pretty clear. "If you rebel, you die. If you might be a rebel, we torture you until you admit who your friends are. If you're aiding the rebels and we can't prove it, we blow up your planet. Even if you're rich and influential, and a major trade hub. _No one_ is above our law."
      Then the rebels said "Fuck you, and your mother too," and got away with it, and no one believed the Empire's bluff anymore. Even when they built another Death Star with several upgrades. And they certainly weren't going to follow the guys building _another_ Death Star, but this time bigger and better. The Empire's reign of terror ended with the Death Star, and the Empire ended with Palpatine, as the power vacuum he left behind destroyed the dictatorship he'd created. But an Empire without its reign of terror is an ineffective empire, and the Death Star was an excellent way to inspire terror. Mere statistical odds tend to bore the impulsive sometimes, and those impulsive people sometimes start rebellions. Rebellions which, in a dictatorship, can become a real threat all too quickly.

      @monsieurboks 7 років тому +11

      Superweapons are always a stupid idea and a waste of resources. The Nazis dabbled in them with their "Wunderwaffe" campaign, and it only helped the allies win. The Empire would have been better off using the resources to better equip and train the Imperial Military, Navy and the Stormtrooper Corps to better crush any signs of rebellion. However, the very basis of Imperial doctrine was generating fear above all, with functionality as a secondary concern, which can be seen in the seriously flawed designs of AT-ATs and Executor class star destroyers. They may look imposing, but were in reality very impractical in real combat. This was what allowed the rebel alliance to win, as they focused on efficiency rather than terror (and had plot armour).

      For the longest time I've had an idea for an alternate version of Star Wars where one of Sheev's sisters ends up in his place as Plagueis' Sith apprentice.
      After flawlessly ousting the Jedi from Coruscant with major popular support following their "attempted coup," annexing the Separatists' Batttle Droid Armies into the Grand Army of the Republic as a result of suing for peace, and basically becoming the most beloved person in the Galaxy, she'd take one look at Tarkin's Doctrine, laugh uproariously, and inform the Moff that by simply taking a tiny fraction of that budget they could turn the Pirates against each other with bounties.

      @Kilory-Star_Wars 6 років тому +10

      1,000,000,000,000 credits? That seems pretty expensive to me, unless if a credit is worth at most 0.0000000001 (one ten BILLIONTH, or 1/10,000,000,000) of a dollar. That would make it worth at most $100 dollars, meaning that a middle-class person can build a 120 km wide planet-killing space station made of durasteel.

    Hi, I'm Darth Vader, dark lord of the Sith. Over a million loyal imperial troopers and officers tragically lost their lives when my so- the rebellion destroyed the Dea- movable orbital planetary mining platform leaving many children without fathers... and fathers without sons... ahem. With your donation of .10 imperial credits a day, young OB-1 will receive three tubes of nutrient paste a day and schooling to one day takes his fathers place and help bring order and justice to the galaxy.
    Think of it, for just tenth of a credit a day, you can make sure Ob-1 and other orphan boys like him get the food and training they need that the rebellion so callously took away.
    Now I know what your saying, "Lord Vader, 1/10 of a credit seems insignificant next to the power of a whole credit, surely there's more that can be done!" Well loyal imperial citizen, there is. For 1 credit a day, you can help establish an orphanage on Endor where these youngsters can run and play while learning important skills like how to aim and how to field dress an eWok. Think of it, for just 1 imperial credit a day, you can make the son of a slain imperial troopers life so much better and help teach vital life skills he'll need later in life.
    Finally, if you really can help, 5 imperial credits a day can make that orphanage mobile. Think of it, a orphanage that can go from system to system, shining its light down on troubled worlds and letting the people know the emperor hasn't forgotten them.
    So what do you say loyal imperial citizen, in these troubled times we can't forget the most needy amongst us, won't you donate today?

    • @ComradeTiki
      @ComradeTiki 6 років тому +5

      It only reduced their number of fieldable Star Destroyers by 20%. That's not a bad trade for building an invincible planet-killer. Heck, if Reapers showed up and tried to Mass Effect the Galactic Empire, the Death Star would have been indispensable.

    • @Benjamin1986980
      @Benjamin1986980 6 років тому +3

      Depends on the mission. First, the trillion credits number seems absurdly low given the 17k that Kenobi offered Han in the first movie. Second, given that this could have funded several patrolcraft for every system in the galaxy, it works wonders. The Empire had no targets for a planet killer except its own subjects. More practically, it could have been spent on education or local police, reducing the desire for rebellion in the first place.

    • @ae4164
      @ae4164 6 років тому

      The issue here is that the estimates of the costs of these things are taken from different sources, it's not like one group of people got together to actually flesh out the economics of everything so that it all scaled in relation to each other. The entire idea behind building the Death Star was that a superweapon that could project the Empire's force across the galaxy would be a goal they could reach quicker than having enough ships to secure every system and planet they controlled. They clearly were aware of the concept of simply buying more ships but that was not going to be an immediate solution. As ComradeTiki points out, 6000 ships may sound like a lot but the Empire was fielding something like 25,000 at the time.
      The main problem with the Death Star, aside from the fact that nobody told them that the Bad Guys always lose, is that they underestimated their own people and instead of cowering in fear at the destruction of Alderaan they were angered and the number of people joining the rebellion only grew.

      It bothers me that people always give Stormtroopers crap about their aim. Someone once caluculated the number of times they shot in the films vs number of hits, and figured they had a 13% accuracy rate. For troops i real combat that is amazing. Seriously how many shots vs hits do you see in a typical war film? Plus they were mostly shooting at people that were wearing their plot armor, and on the Death Star they were ordered to let them escape, so they wouldn't be shooting their best.

    • @haydenbarnes1665
      @haydenbarnes1665 7 років тому +9

      I'm aware of each of these points. I'm just stating that a helmet of that design really limits how much of a battlefield any trooper can see, and that can be quite disastrous for any firefight, even if you are being ordered to essentially miss on purpose.

      Not trillions, im guessing you don't even understand how many people that is... At maximum it would be a couple billion maybe not even so as the rebellion never could directly fight the empire so never truly cost them huge casualty's as they simple couldn't sustain such loses from a small organization.

    • @majorearl12
      @majorearl12 7 років тому +8

      ZENE0 n' Stuf Alderaan alone would be 3 Billion. The Trillion at the least could come from any number of losses: slaves, battles of other rebel cells, also the numerous amounts killed in space conflicts, also there is a 15 year gap after the Battle of Endor where the Rebels were reformed into the New Republic meaning more resources and manpower. At the very least a Trillion were killed in 21 years of conflict.

      Okay, I'm tired of people getting this wrong. Stormtrooper's aim and armor doesn't suck.
      In our day, the best bullet proof armor can prevent a bullet from entering someone's body, but they usually get knocked unconscious.
      Stormtrooper armor can prevent a laser from entering a stormtrooper's body, but they usually get knocked unconscious.
      Rebel armor doesn't do much, they die a little bit more than they do just get knocked unconscious.

    technically for the cost the death star we also could have just bought a few dozen or so more practical super weapons....like more super turbo lasers for eclipse class star destroyers. Or just bought a SSD for every Sector. Then given them super turbo lasers. Seriously, Palpatine was a moron for not supporting the eclipse project more heavily and literally building a small flotilla of ships each able to one-shot any other ship in the galaxy and likely wipe any non-planetwide population center off the face of a world in a single blast.

      SovekOnivris Yeah, the eclipse could rock up, defile a planet, and then leave it as a permanent reminder to any who remain alive on the planet and anyone else watching just what the empire is capable of. If I recall correctly, the material cost for the first Death Star is equivalent to about 20-30 million Star Destroyers or a few hundred thousand Executor-class Super Star Destroyers, based on the volume. But according to A New Hope, the Imperial Stafleet was already incredibly massive and powerful, having almost twice the firepower of the first Death Star, indicating that the Starfleet had far more than the official number of 25.000 Star Destroyers.

      They could have built around 3.3 million Tie Defenders, probably substantially more, considering that building so many would likely allow them to make production much cheaper, as the price is for the prototype design. I think they *should* have done was put about 10% of the funding into new star destroyers, due to how they themselves are incredibly powerful but even if enemies to muster the power and forces to defeat one, they have thousands more still. Then another 15-25% should go to victory class destroyers, as I think they are very versatile and would be highly effective in going to the unknown regions to explore and expand. Then put the rest into improving the quality of things they already have, a large portion could be used to mass produce shielded tie fighters, and further training for stormtroopers or other military forces.

      The only part of the Death Star that was really advanced though was the weapon, which was a groundbreaking innovation. The rest of it was old tech repurposed. Hell, the Geonosians started the construction of the outer shell of DS1. Even the hyperdrive was basic, just scaled up. That simplicity saves a LOT of money.
      A top of the line ISD was significantly more technologically advanced. And it's those advances that cost money, because R&D is expensive as hell.
      Say you invent a new weapons guidance system for an ISD. You have to fund research, testing, manufacture, field testing, mass production, retrofitting older ships (which may neccessitate an overhaul of their computer systems to handle the new weapos guidance programs), and altering the plans for new ships, which is also very expensive, especially of you have a contract with someone to produce the part you have just replaced, so you have to pay a hefty penalty to cancel the contract. You then have to train old and new crew in how to use the new system.
      The fact that only the weapons system was new on the Death Atar dramatically undercuts most of those costs.

    Had the Empire not expended cost on the Tarkin/Krennic Death Star, the Empire would have fielded far more Star Destroyers than the original 25k in service of the Imperial Navy. If pragmatic masterminds like Thrawn were involved in a grand strategy to redesign the Imperial military, the Empire would increase production on smaller ships to patrol areas where an Imperial-Class ISD isn't needed. Smaller ships like a Vindicator-Class, along with upgraded Victory and Venator ISDs, would have been produced in higher numbers.
    Also, the Empire would have also taken the time to improve the quality of their fightercraft. This means finally replacing the original TIEs with TIE Interceptors with shields as the primary fightercraft of the Imperial Starfighter Corps while TIE Defenders and Avengers to the most elite of fighter squadrons. Recycling the original TIE body to the Imperial Army for more TIE crawlers and Century tanks would be a very pragmatic and efficient use of resources. The Army, in addition to more TIE style tanks, they would have received more walkers, and acquire better equipment (and even a variant of the Stormtrooper armor) for their front line units. The same goes to the Stormtrooper Corps: better armor and equipment such as improved personal deflector shields and life support systems. Elite stormtrooper special force units would have advanced versions of the stormtrooper armor with specialized equipment for their area of expertise, much like the old Clone Commando units of the Old Republic.
    I think had the Empire actually began paying more for quality and efficiency while putting very competent commanders to supervise this massive upgrading (and training/investing potential officers and soldiers), the Rebellion would have ended very quickly.

      Generation Tech Which is a very likely possibility, too. The problems the Old Republic's government were mired with endless bureaucracy and corruption, and that's not even counting Palpatine's plans and machinations during the Clone Wars.
      As much as my more pragmatic view of "what if" the Empire didn't expend on the Death Star sounds nice, the problem is the fact the Empire isn't pragmatic at all. System Moffs and various directors would be jockeying for a blank check on whatever projects they want. You have ambitious men like Krennic or Grand Admirals Pitta or Batch vying for black projects, like some obscure (and too specialized) fightercraft to an extensively modified Executor Class Super Dreadnought.

    Look at the Battle of Stalingrad in WW2 where the German Army used a rail gun which required an entire battalion to operate.
    Experts have said that gun probably won the battle for the Russians as those German troops could have been used better in direct combat.

    Even in the new canon, the Death Star as a folly is brought up. General Tagge left the Death Star before it was destroyed and wonders later "how many super star destroyers could we have built for the cost of Tarkin's folly". Of course it does not stop the Empire from ignoring that and building a new battle station.

    Might I suggest say a dozen or so Eclipse class dreadnaughts? Each of those rivalling the Executer but with a neat superlaser in the prow. Anything a death star can do the Eclipse can do for a fraction of the cost.

    I created alternative designs for this with a Naval Academy friend which would have been far cheaper it was a set of rings with a inner core which houses the main reactors and enough firepower and shields to assure destroying it was almost impossible with the idea it would have a permanent fleet attached to it. It would be just good enough to move and faster and fire the main weapon and protect itself from attacks and demand a fifth the manpower and we guessed 40% the resources including a decent force of star destroyers as an escort. And it would have been as a task force far more flexible. Just gut it of the massive support system and keep it simple and it would have be a lot better in the long run for the Empire. But I would have pumped half of that money to cheap health care, job training programs and created a small business loan program for citizens of the Empire on lower populated world and say its a gift from the Emperor as long as a world is peaceful and not aligned with the rebels talk about good PR to no join the enemy and side with them?

  • @Zanfib32
    @Zanfib32 6 років тому +1

    One thing worth noting, is that a Death Star was (in theory if not in practice) impervious to attack from any number of smaller vessels. If you are a tyrant concerned that his military may attempt to conduct a coup to replace you, it is much easier to keep the crew of a single unstoppable battle-station loyal then the crews of thousands of conventional warships.
    Also, the numbers for the Death Stars cost seem a little strange to me. The total mass of the Death Star is comparable to millions of Stardestroyers, so it seems strange the you can only get a few thousand for the same price.

    The Arquitens-class light cruiser has a price of 4 million credits, so they could have gotten 250,000 of those ships in exchange for the Death Star.
    As for one of my favorites, the upgraded child of the Arquitens light cruiser, the Arquitens command cruiser, which costed 5 million credits, the Empire could have bought 200,000 of them.

      I assume you are talking about TIE Defenders, which cost five times as much, but are way, way, way, more useful that their usual trash. (They could have built 3.3 million TIE Defenders, or around 16.7 million flying deathtraps, err, TIE/LNs, which is the standard variant. That does mean that their Corvettes are absurdly cheap, as well as being quite useful, so why they didn't make more is beyond me.)

    How about spending those credits on welfare, education, infrastructure, public works, sporting events, entertainment industry, propaganda, transporation, nationalized industry, business incentives, social safety net, job hirings, scientific research, medical care, and law enforcement?
    Imagine an Empire run competently in such a way that nobody really cares if its evil or not since they're all just happy to live comfortably in a state that takes care of them cradle to grave.
    Citizen 1: Hey, you heard about the Rebels?
    Citizen 2: Fuck those guys. The Empire put my kids through college for free, the Empire pays my salary, the Empire took care of my aunt's scoliosis when we didn't have money to pay, an Imperial lawye won my workers' rights violation lawsuit after I was injured in an industrial exercise, the Empire's interstellar transport monopoly made it affordable for my family to go on vacation to Dantooine, the Empire has cut crime to a quarter of what it used to be, the Empire's medical labs invented implants that let my blind friend see for the first time in her life, and they even busted a Rebel cell that was planning on bombing the Clone Wars Victory Day parade -- the Rebels claim they're fighting for us, but all they do is kill us -- what do they have against the Empire that gives us such great lives and takes care of us in a way that the Republic just never did? Long live the Empire!
    Citizen 1: Damn right.
