As someone who's played and followed this game since early in alpha it's actually kind of surreal to hear NL reading reviews about it lol. KP is an absolute gem if you can play an eroge. It's top tier for what it's going for. Also: while kind of true? about the "assault".... nothing can ever happen to Karryn unless her desires are high enough. She'll definitely protest, and be very prudish early on, but the desire bars don't lie, she's into it on some level (infact early on, almost nothing *can* happen, it's a slow burn corruption game). *shrug* it's uh... a weird subject lmao.
... I mean.... ahaha. I haven't reviewed an eroge, but I have played this on and off during it's development and have way too much knowledge and such about it. It's almost impossible to just casually talk about it with someone who doesn't play H games. The amount of ???? and WHAT LOL kind of scrolling in the twitch chat kind of proves it i guess.

An exceptionally polished blend of JRPG, Prostitution Sim, and prison Management Sim with some sandbox gameplay. Thematically it's reminiscent of Third Crisis, but is more tightly conceived. No uncensor patch is necessary. Can be completed on easy in about 12 hrs. The gameplay falls afoul of the inherent problem of the genre(s), but mostly sidesteps them through excellent execution and novel mechanics JRPGs tend to make really lazy and poorly chosen vehicles for hentai. There's usually massive ludonarrative dissonance (What does fantasy combat have to do with sex? Why does the game insist on me deliberately losing combat to show me the lewds?). This game tries to address this by integrating lewd mechanics (desire meters, stripping, sexual assaults vs regular attacks, etc) into the combat at a very fundamental level. This doesn't really fix the underlying problems, but it does take the rough edges off a bit. The combat's engaging, and doesn't really get frustrating to the point where you'd consider it a negative - although the difficulty ramp-up is very uneven on even just regular difficulty level and can lead to some frankly unfair fights if you don't meet the (hidden) level requirements. It is a bit convoluted and confusing though - with "Stamina" working both as HP and a resource to spend on specific attacks, but then you can maybe replenish it using another resource "energy" (kinda sorta analogous to mana, but not really) after you've run out, but then you run out of that if you can't outheal the incoming damage. At that point, you lose the physical combat, but then go into a sexual combat with your stamina bar replenished, which seems to be a race to get your assailants off before they get you off. At which point you sort of win, but not properly win, even though you lost the combat? There's two rooms full of people at the start whose only purpose is for each of them to explain one element of the gameplay, and it *still* doesn't make explicit what the fail states, if any, are. I've got very little idea what the different states of having your clothes pulled off actually do mechanically, is it damage reduction? Is it a temporary shield against some types of assault? Both? The Desire meters trigger debuffs, but also trigger H-events, but also sometimes buff you too? Lots of vital information (enemy's HP values and attack strengths; difficulty of any given encounter; the sex-combat mechanics; loads of prison management values, etc, etc) is simply not made available to you. It's amazing something so confused seems to actually play so entertainingly. The obtuseness of some of the gameplay mechanics and thus the metagame can be a real turn-off once the novelty of the game's presentation wears off There are loads of counter-intuitive design decisions which force the player to learn by trial-and-error things which should be explicit. The Prostitution Sim elements are fine, and as slickly executed as the rest of the game, but aren't any deeper than the standard fare for that genre The waitressing job's a bit of a drag - it goes on forever, the difficulty ramps up really quickly, it expects you to repeat it regularly to maintain the perks the bar provides you in the Management part of the game and the currency rewards are just enough to justify doing it, but not enough to feel like it's a productive use of your time. Unlike combat, there's no "run away" option, so it gets unavoidably rapey very fast. This is probably my biggest irritation with the game in general: It falls into the typical trap of the genre, in that by denying the main character agency in order to apply non-consensual tropes to her, it also denies the player a lot of agency in how you want to build your own narrative via gameplay For example, if you want the main character to lose her virginity to a specific antagonist, you're probably out of luck. There's no way to realistically engineer it, so it's probably just going to happen to some rando in some unwinnable fight down the line when the respective desire meter tops out against over-levelled opponents and the combat just doesn't go your way. I mean, I guess that's kinda ludonarrative synergy in that it's out of both the main character's and your control? But it's not exactly interesting story-telling. You end up with the active gameplay (combat) being in direct opposition to the passive experience of moral corruption and degradation, which makes for a generally awkward experience. The narrative established by sandbox gameplay is very much pulling in the opposite direction to the plotting given to you. The progression system's a real mess "Edicts" are shared between your main character (so percentage stat boosts, unlocking new combat skills, unlocking equipment, etc, etc) and the prison itself. You're limited to ~2 per day (depending on difficulty, starting perks, etc) each of which requires varying levels of currency to unlock. Because of how the game seems to scale the challenges it presents to you, you always feel like skimping on your character's combat perks is going to screw you over; and the game noob-traps you into diversifying your stat builds - when, counter to how combat is presented (rock-paper-scissors; certain skills being required to overcome some enemies' special abilities, etc), it actually wants you to specialise into over-levelling just one. There's a ridiculous number of skill trees which are all incredibly important to pursue, but which are fighting for very very limited resources. This is a real pain, as you have to spend money to get the income-generating perks with which to make money - so even if you prioritise the prison's economics, you still feel like you're constantly trailing behind the curve. A lot of the prison management sums don't seem to add up properly The "ledger" page doesn't seem to accurately reflect your incoming cash vs outgoing, as you're constantly short-changed when you start the day with less currency than the status page tells you you're due. The level of "control" in the prison seems to constantly be going down despite you not pursuing any policies that might deplete it; and because shoring up Control almost always involves expenditure, you never really feel like you can afford to invest in it no matter how monomaniacally you prioritise generating cash. There's a ticking-clock element in that stability in the prison deteriorates over time, which is a constant source of anxiety. The difficulty ramp-up is omnipresent and because it's so unclear what the fail states do and how you can juggle them, you end up being bewildered at how to tackle the million things the game thinks it is essential you get on top of simultaneously. The H-content is good, but very non-con with hints of NTR clichés. Depending on how you play (not throwing, for example), it's possible to end up teasing yourself with the rate of pacing and the slow progress of moral decline. This ramps up the sexiness surprisingly effectively (although possibly unintentionally). The way the game tracks the moral degredation serves pretty well as a narrative device (and indeed a ludonarrative device) and is probably the most valuable addition to the genre this game makes; but unfortunately its not quite satisfactory as a replacement for plotting. The game's actual plotting is very meh and generic. The game's probably a high watermark for erotic JRPGs So in that respect it's worth getting if the genres discussed above appeal to you and the game is on steep discount. The price is a bit excessive for what you get, even with the launch reduction of 20%. However, if you're more interested in innovative modern eroge, ones that are more interested in exploring sex than using it as furniture in an unrelated idiom , then this is probably not going to hit the spot.
@@TheLibraryofLetourneau that's pretty much the alicesoft modus operandi, where the games are super lighthearted comedy until they slowly build to something more serious. @@rkraccoons i'd like to get into them because i like h content with great stories but it's pretty time consuming for me, i mostly read and work on doujins but those are usually one-shots
@@TheLibraryofLetourneau Yeah, the whole series would be a time sink since Rance as an IP predates the Simpsons, that's how old it is. But it might be worth the time as it's not too much of a stretch to say we probably wouldn't have a lot of the modern hits without its impact: lots of the authors who rose to fame in the light novel boom of the mid 2010's cite Rance as one of their inspirations. It's not simply a coincidence so many of their protagonists are self-centered brown haired adventurers with a penchant for green in their primary outfit color, set in world with overt RPG game mechanics that everyone in the setting can clearly see and mundanely interact with.
The game was in early access outside of Steam for over two years, so it's not actually that weird. That's also how that one other reviewer could have "over 200 hours of playtime in alphas"
Huh, I've actually played Karryn's Prison. It's one of the better examples of a fun game meshed with hentai elements. Lot of them tend to be sort of half assed in the game department. Stuff like Hunie Pop comes to mind where they just use a slightly altered version of simple games like bejeweled. Lot of other games use other simple games such as matching ones to space out lewd content. Karryn doesn't do that, so that's nice. Doubt anyone here is looking for recommendations, but for a more strategy oriented game Sengoku Rance is quite fun. You also don't need to play the other games to play it.

How can I find these videos?
@@willowdrakon Man this little comment sent me down. Apparently the video in northernlion that had the worst RPG was deleted ("Sexy Xbox Live Indie Games 2")
But someone with the channel called "Stewart Isme" reuploaded it. The thumbnail is a shitty 3d model of a lady eating a hotdog.
If you still can't find it, HMU And I'll try to send you the link.
@@esseubot
You still got that link?
@@AdmiralSloth I have it, I thought I answered the comment, maybe comments with a yt link are immediatly removed? You can just search for "sexy xbox live games with northernlion" and it should be re-uploaded as one of the first results. I'll also try to send a comment with just the link after this anyway.
lmao the comment "this is not super auto pets"
very happy to now know the context behind seeing karryn's prison in chat
10:09 "did griffin mcelroy write this" BRO 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
hoooooly
The edits are insane! Also this is too funny.
Oh boy that line skip at 12:20 !
That Ace42 review was actually really well written. I'm impressed how seriously they took it
syllables per second started rivalling rap god somewhr in there
As someone who's played and followed this game since early in alpha it's actually kind of surreal to hear NL reading reviews about it lol.
Holy cow we got an expert in the comment section
Hello last reviewer
... I mean....
Bro as someone who's spoken to people who worked on the game it's a little surreal as well. I know one of the games I'm writing for considered some of the same voice talent
although not sexual assault i guess it's technically sexual harassment since the inmates will just start jerking off in front of her even when her desires are low.
these are the bits he should be posting on main imo
sadly these segments are only preserved by archivist channels like Bootleg NLSS and those usually get lost in the ether unless you look for them so doing my best to highlight them
@@TheLibraryofLetourneau honestly dude I've been watching for so long at this point I must have thought to myself 'holy shit this man is a genius' or 'wtf is this madman doing' just before he clutches the win or just had to be astonished at how sharp his fricking mind is hundreds of times.
Not to mention his ability to do comedy on so many levels.
What I'm trying to say I guess is thank you, I don't have the fortitude to do the same but it's good someone is. But it'll never do NL justice those who haven't gone through his back catalogue or have started friggin ages ago will have missed so many just 'NL' moments 🙁
"Let's pass this one onto Jerma." Deffinitely one of the funniest things I ever heard.
NL might have increased that game's exposure by a lot! Eggshell hat for Karryn when?
soooo truee, he should get one when he eventually does a playthrough on stream but doesn't actually show the game so it's just a black screen with his face cam for 3 hours
The gameplay falls afoul of the inherent problem of the genre(s), but mostly sidesteps them through excellent execution and novel mechanics
JRPGs tend to make really lazy and poorly chosen vehicles for hentai.
The obtuseness of some of the gameplay mechanics and thus the metagame can be a real turn-off once the novelty of the game's presentation wears off
There are loads of counter-intuitive design decisions which force the player to learn by trial-and-error things which should be explicit.
The Prostitution Sim elements are fine, and as slickly executed as the rest of the game, but aren't any deeper than the standard fare for that genre
The waitressing job's a bit of a drag - it goes on forever, the difficulty ramps up really quickly, it expects you to repeat it regularly to maintain the perks the bar provides you in the Management part of the game and the currency rewards are just enough to justify doing it, but not enough to feel like it's a productive use of your time. Unlike combat, there's no "run away" option, so it gets unavoidably rapey very fast.
This is probably my biggest irritation with the game in general: It falls into the typical trap of the genre, in that by denying the main character agency in order to apply non-consensual tropes to her, it also denies the player a lot of agency in how you want to build your own narrative via gameplay
For example, if you want the main character to lose her virginity to a specific antagonist, you're probably out of luck.
The progression system's a real mess
"Edicts" are shared between your main character (so percentage stat boosts, unlocking new combat skills, unlocking equipment, etc, etc) and the prison itself.
A lot of the prison management sums don't seem to add up properly
The "ledger" page doesn't seem to accurately reflect your incoming cash vs outgoing, as you're constantly short-changed when you start the day with less currency than the status page tells you you're due.
The game's probably a high watermark for erotic JRPGs
So in that respect it's worth getting if the genres discussed above appeal to you and the game is on steep discount. The price is a bit excessive for what you get, even with the launch reduction of 20%.
However, if you're more interested in innovative modern eroge, ones that are more interested in exploring sex than using it as furniture in an unrelated idiom , then this is probably not going to hit the spot.
You, my man, get the like, comment and subscribe all the youtubers crave
NGL, I kinda want to play it now.
try the free demo and let us know if it's any good!
lol the classical music on the last one was a nice touch
Okay but milk outside a bag of milk... Is actually good, same with the first game
Idk why but good h games tend to go hard. Its a shame you can't reccomend series like Rance to anyone you know, even online.
don't know about the game but the rance animation is pretty tame except for that extra episode which got super dark
@@TheLibraryofLetourneau that's pretty much the alicesoft modus operandi, where the games are super lighthearted comedy until they slowly build to something more serious. It should be noted how great the lore and worldbuilding is too, the final game in the series (Rance X) has the longest script of any video game ever.
@@rkraccoons i'd like to get into them because i like h content with great stories but it's pretty time consuming for me, i mostly read and work on doujins but those are usually one-shots
I tried Rance once, too many R-word shit.
So worth it to watch to the end
2:01 "unlike other VNs, this one subverts your expectations and is not a dirty sexual VN"
I think the classical music is really fitting, these are individuals of the highest class
The funniest part is that the essay review was written at 0.2 hours of playtime. 09:28
The game was in early access outside of Steam for over two years, so it's not actually that weird. That's also how that one other reviewer could have "over 200 hours of playtime in alphas"
@@Daizz alpha player here, game was already insanely popular in these circles even before the steam release.
This man could read ingredient labels on kids' cereals and I'd laugh.

Thanks NL for introducing us to this masterpiece. Also that one guy with 95 hours logged in fucking killed me 💀
My dumbass thought the classical music was someone's ringtone in the office.
@user-ts2ir4hc5r True.
7:06 why do I hear Guts' theme
they definitely have a point about the bar minigame.
Damn that indepth review got me considering. 😂
this vid is the reason i bought this game lol(its VERY good)
niceee
Omfg that last one IS legendary.
this is why i dont leave reviews on these even after markin the game Private
Anyone with that prof pic will try to slide “ludonarrative dissonance” into any conversation about a game
100 hours of deep narrative? NEVER. 100 hours of mind numbing pets? YES PLEASE! Thats my Egg.
