  • Tommy Duquette, FightCamp trainer and Co-Founder, demonstrates a step-by-step tutorial on how to block a punch in boxing. Blocking punches is one of the best ways to prevent getting hit, as it redirects the momentum of the opposition away from you and into the air or into themselves. This video teaches how to use basic block techniques to protect yourself in a sparring match.

I have learned and even used these blocks in sparring and training. It's nice to have this video from someone knowledgeable to confirm what I knew.

to everyone who really wants to prolong their boxing career (and what's more important - their life), please train the high guard properly! you need to learn to hold the arms in such way so that they would barely move even under the heaviest of punches. to do this, you have to actually go out and practice getting hit at your closed on guard (of course, gradually - from the weakest to the strongest punches). check out what a small guy Brian Castano was able to do with a large tall freak Charlo thanks to the properly trained defense

@@737simviator I'm not speaking about sparring, devote a part of your training routine specifically to this exercise: you hold the guard tight and your partner throws punches at this guard. eventually you would be comfortable enough to block weak and mediocre punches. after that, you can proceed with the heavier blows. it's just a part of learning, like any other training routine

A good idea for the low block might also be to roll with the punch, meaning backing up your body so the impact will be lessened instead of meeting it head-on, I've seen pro boxers do this in matches. Could be a possible alternative!

my struggle has always been im very slow in processing whats coming at me, my reflexes are fast in terms of seeing something coming, but slow in processing what is coming!.....so im the guy who'd try to catch a hook, or "answer the telephone" block a jab.

    • @wyattthacker3679

It sounds like it's just your reflexes that need work. Reflexes refer to combination of seeing, processing and reacting, in that order. The faster the order, the faster your reflexes.
Try not to think too much for your processing step. As someone who may enjoy thinking and imagining in general, this can surely be a challenge to just "not think" - in fact it doesn't even sound possible most of the time.
