I think it's because it's easier to walk somewhere you know than it is to dial a sequence of numbers that you've never had to use before. It said they'd been there before so probably walked until it looked familiar. But I wasn't there so I don't know that's just my opinion

OK the beginning of the story, the sister dumps her kids at ops house while op on vacation with her boyfriend.
