It may be a situation of the least headache, if you can prove you tried to give him a chance and he messes it up it could be easier to fight against forced custody if he pursues it later in the legal route.

Any parent that willingly signs away his/her rights should not get second chances or redos. They should know the implications of parental termination and if they are suddenly having regrets too bad so sad, but they are not owed anything with the child. And even if OP decided to let her ex back into her son's life, she needs to make it a prerequisite that he needs to pay all of the back child support before he's allow any sort of visitation. Can't play if you don't pay.
Protecting your child from future abandonment is the _right_ thing to do. No parent is better than a bad one, take things slow and let Travis's actions speak.
Kicked you out at 7 months, signed away his rights, didn't speak to you for over a year, and then wants to waltz back in? Isn't a good man to be the father of your child. Find someone better who can mentor your son later in life, he still needs a father figure, but Travis isn't the right one for that.

When people show you who they really are, believe them. Just give a verbal warning and if you can record it the better then report it to the authorities and from there it's easy to get a restraining order. Set clear boundaries with those around you about the situation. Your child is the most important thing, and you must protect them.

Buddy had the opportunity to see his son right up until he signed his rights away - which was at least a week later. If you didn't take advantage of the time before you signed your rights away, that's your problem.

Decisions have consequences. I got my girlfriend pregnant when I was 16 and my parents didn't want to support me. I respected her decision. The only grandparents my daughters have today are my best friend's parents.

In my opinion everyone sucks at some point in this story. Op shouldn't have forced him to change his ways and im betting if they saved money when Op had to leave due to pregnancy they would have had extra savings. Travis shouldn't have done what he did so 4.5/5 buttholes but Op gets 2/5 buttholes. And Travis' parents get 4/5 buttholes they sound very manipulative.
It depends if his living conditions was deplorable and Op was truly helping him to change it, I see nothing wrong, but we don't exactly know for sure if she just see his way of living not up to her taste or it was ok. But the guy is the biggest ah yet.

It doesn't excuse how he treated her but it is a form of abuse. I don't think it was intentional on her behalf and I'm sure if he brought it up at the time, she would have stopped, but it still happened and he compartmentalised it and decided that she was controlling and abusive.
