It's so surreal to me to see Astaroth as a regular enemy/midboss. Sure, he has never been the big bad since his original appearance, but at least in every game except this one he's still an endgame boss.

It's easier than this is on the hard modes, but that doesn't mean DS is a kids game in the least bit, in fact most quit pretty early on. Pretty great series too, learning to master the DS games is one of the most enjoyable aspects of it and you really get to feel the reward of finally beating whatever you're trying to beat, kind of like this except in a much larger, longer and slower paced game, not to say that you don't need to make lightning fast decisions in that. I'd definitely recommend trying it out.

Capcom tends to go with more abrasive sounds for their CPS-1/YM2151 chips. I quite like it, as you can still make out a lot of sounds fairly well and imo, I honestly prefer it over the switch to PCM sound effects starting with Final Fight. Their FM sounds generally has a lot more range, quiet or loud. That being said, it sounds much better on hardware or better emulators. I noticed some hit sfx don't give that same oomfph as they usually do

The most recent major release is Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins on the PSP. There are a few other games in the series, but I'd say these 4 are the most well-known.

Games were made by much smaller teams with no assistance from outside Japan. It wasn’t like today where bigger budgets exist and translation and voice acting is done outside of Japan by dedicated teams of native speakers. The English is awkward because the Japanese developers were not native English speakers, and most were done internally by whoever on the team spoke English as a second language. Imagine trying to write Japanese dialogue, as an English speaker. We laugh at this stuff now, but it was hard.
I hated Astaroth and Firebrand every time they showed up in an Arthur game. Glad Firebrand got to kick his demonic @55 in hell, too in the Gargoyle's Quest games.
NES Ghosts n' Goblins is one of the hardest and most frustrating games that's EVER existed. Fuck that game. Lol!!! We were just kids,why did they make the game so damn hard? Smh. 😔🤪

I love Capcoms music style around this time. You hear it in Forgotten Worlds, Strider, etc. Almost lo-fi sounding with little clicks and taps.

I forgot how unreasonable some of these fights were. No surprise I never beat the arcade version, only the Sega Genesis one.

I began to enjoy this game again after I became full-grown up man.... I pretty enjoyed it when I was a kid..
I'm glad Lucifer got to be the big-bad again in the updated Playstation Ghouls and Ghosts.
As great as this game is, the sound effects in this version are like someone brushing and pinging on the game's sound chip.
