Let me know which one you prefer Or if you haven't had these yet, which one you're looking forward to!
David, I posted a comment earlier today and now don't see it among the others. I may have violated some rule on UA-cam? My post was probably taken down due to me having included my personal email address. I'm not sure how to communicate with you off UA-cam. You may have to clue me in.
Thanks
Dana
Hey Dana! I got your email so we'll work it out through there! Thanks a ton!
Rare Breed is the most underrated bourbon that’s been on shelves for years. The color, flavor and balance are the Glock of bourbon standards
Hey Cleverhonky! I couldn't agree with you more. If this had a different label on it (buffalo trace anything), it would be allocated like Stagg or Blanton's. I haven't thought of comparing this to the Glock, but I can't argue with that comparison! Thanks a ton for spending your precious time watching my video! Greatly appreciate your view and your comment! Cheers!
@@WhiskeyBank Cheers and if you have a review on Kentucky Owl let me know.
More often than not, it's Barrel Proof day! Love both for different reasons a must stock.
Hello Jason! I agree, both are a must on my shelf as I always have at least one and most likely a back up as well. I myself is also a proof hound and love high proof bourbons! My unicorn is the JD Coy Hill, but haven't even been able to obtain it and probably never will, but that's ok as there will always be good whiskey coming out. Thank you so much for the view and the comment! Cheers!
Nice work in this. Good descriptions. I prefer Rare Breed between these two.
Hey Caleb! Thank you for your kind words! There are days I like JD a little more, but mostly I reach for the Rare Breed as it seems I already need to get a back up bottle as it's more than half gone. I'll try to do more battle videos like this as it is interesting to see how they compare side by side instead of just one at a time. Thank you so much for the view and the comment! Greatly appreciated! Cheers!
Try adding water to jack. Proof it down to match the rare breed alcohol content. May open up and change things a bit. Love both.
Hey Charlie! That is a great suggestion and I will try that and compare it side by side again with Rare Breed to see if it'll change things. They both are fantastic the way they are and I love having a pour of either one. Thanks a bunch for the view and the comment! Much appreciated! Cheers!
Last month I got my 1st Rare Breed and love it. Just got the JD SBBP last week haven't cracked it yet, looking fwd to it so thanks for doing a side-by-side.
I'll be honest with you, you'll probably enjoy both tremendously! From my memory, when I had the Rare Breed and JD SiB BP back to back, the classic notes of caramel, brown sugar, baking spices, and slight citrus, and sweet oak finish from the Rare Breed was just a little more pleasing than the banana split, cinnamon spice, and sweet caramel finish of the JD.
Once you try the JD SiB BP, let me know which one you enjoy more and why!
Thanks a ton for your view and comment! Greatly appreciate it and cheers~
Rare Breed wins so often that it’s strange to see it lose. Great comparison and video.
I know! Rare Breed is a beast that everyone (including me at times 😆) take for granted. Let's hope it remains tasty with a great price for a long time!
Have a wonderful day and cheers ~
I prefer the rye spice and the lower barrel proof of the Rare Breed. Wild turkey flavor profile is my favorite. The Jack Daniels 10 and 12 are fantastic. The higher age mutes the overwhelming banana note. As far as shelf JD I prefer the single barrel rye. Looking forward to finding the new barrel proof JD rye.
Hey Michael! I was able to finally obtain the JD 10 & 12 in June so I'll find out myself once I do the review of both of them in the coming weeks! I heard about the age mellowing out the banana as a "part" of the flavor profile instead of being THE flavor profile, so I'm very excited!! I hope to get a bottle of the JD SiB BP Rye soon as well so I can, not only do a review video, but compare it to some of the better ryes I have. Thanks a ton for the view and the comment! Much appreciated! Cheers!
I've never agreed with an entire comparison review as much as this one! Both great pours, just like you I need to be in the mood for that banana when it comes to JD but, imo, Rare Breed is the best value bourbon on the market for that composition of notes with the bitter cocoa finish. New sub here! Great review.
Hey BustaSnape! I'm glad your palate matched mine as I was starting to think I was the only one who thought the banana was a little "strong". It might have just been our "single barrels" so I'll see if it's the same on the next one as well as I'll keep buying both the JD and the Rare Breed. Thanks a ton for the view, comment, and the sub!! I truly appreciate it! Cheers!
Both are great pours but if I had to choose I would take the Rare Breed! It’s so well rounded and a anytime pour!
Hello Nick! Welcome back 4!! Rare Breed's picture should be in the dictionary next to the word "bourbon" as it is the standard that all bourbons need to live up to! Complex, balanced, yet so so delicious! I am very appreciative of all your views and comments and am humbled you are willing to spend your precious time watching me drink and talk about whiskey. Thank you so much and cheers!
@@WhiskeyBank I’m on my 7th month of my journey and I’m all in on all video knowledge, history, and opinions. My son is a restaurant manager and bartender so I’ve had many samples before I buy, however counting some backups I have about 140 bottles:)
@@nickp5511 that is very nice! I'm sure you have tried some rare bottles as well, what is your favorite or most unique whiskey you had so far from the 140 or so?
@@WhiskeyBank I don’t get any Btac, Wild Turkey master’s keep, Heaven Hill 17yr, Staggs, Hardin’s Creek, Michters 10yr, etc. That being said I have had my sons Michters 10 rye, and his Pappy 15 and both are very good. I do have a Russell’s Reserve 13 that’s very good and a Redbreast 21 that’s really nice and a Knob Creek 18yr that I enjoy. How about you?
@@nickp5511 for me, old forester single barrel barrel strength bourbons. Great bottle. Haven't had a bad bottle yet.
Great review- Subbed !
Hi Retrolee! Thank you for the kind words and the sub! It really helps out my channel and gives me a pep in my steps! Thanks as well for the view and the comment! Greatly appreciated and cheers!
Just found your channel. Very cool. Love me some Rare Breed!
Rare Breed is a classic bourbon that should be the picture in the dictionary under the definition of "Bourbon" 😆. It will be a bottle that will always be on my shelf somewhere!
Thank you so much for your view and comment! Greatly appreciate it and cheers~
Glad I do not have to choose between them. Like them both.
Hey Dave! Welcome back! Same here! There is a reason I purchased both and did this video as I enjoy both tremendously. I don't know if you had a chance to see the Sagamore 8 Year review video, but if not, please see till the end and email me at whiskeybank23@gmail.com. Hope to hear from you soon!
I have tried the rare breed but lately i've been more into the sweet, coffee, darker taste. I picked up JD Barrel Proof today from KL. Hopefully I'll like it more than the rare breed. I think I can get the rare breed cheaper than the JD actually.
Hey Sean! There are days where I prefer the JD Barrel Proof due to the sweeter fruit note (banana for me). But I keep going back to the Rare Breed more as I just love that classic bourbon taste 😆.
I greatly appreciate you always viewing and commenting on my videos as you did a lot this week 😀! Thank you so much and cheers~
JD SiB BP store/distiller picks are amazing
Hello Joey! I heard they are amazing, but unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to get one as they sell out very quickly in my area. If I ever get one, I'll revisit this battle and see how it fares! Thanks a ton for the view and the comment! Cheers!
Haven't had the JD SB, but I love Rare Breed so much I'd be prejudiced anyway.
Hello ConserVet! From my memory, I actually thought JD SiB BS would win the palate/finish, but maybe the matchup wasn't great or it was just my mood that evening, but Rare Breed was just a tad better. I'm sure I'll go back to it later and I might have a different opinion. But all I know is that you can't go wrong either way. You should try the JD SiB BS when you get a chance! Thanks a ton for your view and comment! I greatly appreciate it! Cheers!
Before conducting my own blind between these bottles i would have picked JD as my preferred BP. However, after the blind it turns out rare breed had the edge. I found it to have a bit more complexity in flavor profile. I will blind them again as i have a closed JD that may taste a bit diff as it is a SB.
Hello Jonathan! The Rare Breed just seemed more "solid" while JD has a higher ceiling. I'm sure there are some JD single barrels that would taste like the best bourbon in the world while some that are just ok. The rare breed is just solid all the time. But let me know the results of the second blind~ thanks again for everything and cheers!
They are both great. I prefer the Jack Daniel as it seems sweeter to me and I am a sucker for sweet whiskey. Here in Michigan, the Wild Turkey is about 20 dollars cheaper than the Jack.
Hey Tim! You can't go wrong with either and I do enjoy the Jack Daniel's many nights as well 🤣. The price difference is noticeable in Michigan and if that was the case here, I would buy Rare Breed many times more than JD 😆. Luckily for me, they are about the same here.
Thanks a ton for your view and comment! Truly appreciate it and cheers ~
Same here in PA. $50 bottle vs $70+ bottle... And Rare Breed is easier to find. And I agree, it's better than my bottle of JDSBSBP... but the Jack IS a single barrel... so wouldn't surprise me to find one I preferred... but $20+ more to gamble... nah... I'll take the turkey.
JD at least 15 more than RB in my area. But they're both in my top 5 rotation. Prefer blending the JD SBBP with 1910. Brings the proof closer to the RB as well. Cheers
Hey Mark! I never thought to blend the JD SiB BP with 1910. I just picked up a 1910 today so I'll actually give that a try. Is there a certain amount to blend (50/50?) and how long do you let it sit for? I'm actually very curious. Thanks for the view and the comment! Cheers!
@WhiskeyBank I've done 50/50 allot but recently tried 75% SBBP 25% 1910 and liked that even more.
@WhiskeyBank Stuff and Whiskey do a blend with SBBP, 1910, WRDO. Evenly call it the banana pancake mix😄 I prefer 1910 over WRDO so haven't bought any in awhile even though it's wonderful in its own right.
@@mlinder2000 I'll try your blend first and than try the stuff and whiskey one as well. Both sound delicious! Thanks for the suggestion!
I have the JD and I really like it, hold it for special days, I just got the RB and I'm adding it to rotation on the next empty bottle, I'm glad I found this video and can't wait to open the RB
Hey Robert! You'll absolutely enjoy the Rare Breed! Both Rare Breed and JD are wonderful bottles, but Rare Breed was something I felt I would go for it more consistently than JD, when compared side by side. RB wasn't flashy, but it just had everything I wanted in a bourbon. Thanks a million for the view and the comment! Much appreciated and cheers!
You’ll love it. Tastes like cherry covered in chocolate.
Unfortunately, you will Rare Breed before JD BBP. JD is becoming an unicorn along with the Rye.
Hey Rodney! You are right, the JD SiB Barrel Proof is becoming harder and harder to find as it seems they are savings some of the better barrels for the special releases and/or JD 10/12s. Also, the people are realizing how good this bottle is and buying it up as well. The Barrel Proof Rye is a unicorn, but hopefully it gets better as time goes by. Thanks a ton for the view and the comment! Cheers!
I would like to see the Russell's Single Barrel (Red Label) vs. the these two. Cheers...
That would be a great battle and one I should do someday!
Nice video, I have had both but I thought the Jack Daniels Barrel Proof blew Rare Breed away! Maybe I like the higher proof point, but I think I liked the flavor profile better. For the 62 bucks I paid for my bottle, I will be looking for another one soon.
Hey Fred! Jack Daniel's is a great pour and trust me, I have received plenty of comments letting me know they prefer the JD Single Barrel Barrel Strength 😆. It was a hard choice as I like them both and drink both of them often (sometimes too often 🤣), but the "standard" profile of the Rare Breed just seems to win out more than the fruit/banana profile of the Jack Daniel's by a hair 😄.
Thank you so much for your view and comment! Greatly appreciate it and cheers~
Thank you for your feedback, I can appreciate your opinion and have purchased several bottles of rare breed because I love bourbon and that is a good one too. I think I was pleasantly surprised on how much I liked that Jack Daniels Barrel Proof. Most important, thank you for a great video! Cheers to you my friend!!
Is the Jack chilled filtered ? Both bottles are bloody awesome.
Hey Mark! From my understanding, the JD Single Barrel Barrel Proofs are non-chill filtered. Now, due to their "charcoal filtering" to be Tennessee whiskey, maybe it can't say it's non-chill filtered? Either way, it's a great pour and one that can't be underestimated!
Thank you so much for your view and comment! Greatly appreciate it and cheers~
I’ll pick the wild turkey cos I can get the jack easily.
Hello Kuen! Both Rare Breed and JD Barrel Strength have been getting harder and harder to find on the shelves these days due to their popularity. It also seems since both are releasing high aged whiskeys (10, 12, and 13 years), they are saving some of those barrels for those special releases, which leave less for the WT Rare Breed and JD Barrel Strength. I hope both become shelf available again so anybody who wants to can get their hands on these fantastic bottles. Thanks a bunch for the view and comment! Cheers!
The lower Rye in the JD mash bill makes it my pick.
Hey Scott! That certainly is a good point and JD is a wonderful bottle! I will always have both on my shelf at all times ~ but looking back at my "pour rate" it does seem like I still go to the rare breed more often than the JD. I'll have to track this more scientifically 🤣.
Thank you so much for your view and comment! Super appreciate it and cheers ~
굿
감사합니다! 😊
My experience: tried Rare Breed, loved it, told everyone i know that likes bourbon how great it was, moved to Rare Breed Rye, loved it as well, next found Jack Daniels Single Barrel Barrel Proof. Keep in mind i wasnt a fan of Jack Daniels when i bought it, i was blown away by it, tonight did a side by side and Rare Breed couldnt compete. Rare Breed felt thinner in comparison and less complex. The notes on the Jack Daniels Barrel Proof really got me, hit all the sweet spots that i like personally. Jack Daniels SBBP changed my whole perception of the brand in a big way. Now to find another one or the Barrel Proof Rye.
Hey Chris! I agree with you Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof is a wonderful bottle and will be on my shelf at all times! For me, the "classic" bourbon notes of the Rare Breed won that night as I know I'll go back to it over and over again without fail. But if I did it tonight, JD might win 🤣.
This was a match up I enjoyed tremendously and do from time to time personally.
Thanks a ton for your view and very insightful comment! Greatly appreciate it and Merry Christmas! Cheers~
RB
Hey Les! Rare Breed is an amazing bottle and pound for pound, probably one of the best bourbons out there, while JD Single Barrel isn't too far behind. Thanks a ton for the view and the comment! Cheers!
JD is most unique and it’s getting hard to get it…however RB is the best bourbon / value…
Your absolutely correct! JD has that unique fruit punch that is not easy to get from any other whiskey. Only thing that comes close would be Old Foresters at times. But the Rare Breed is that classic bourbon that is just so good all the time and coming in at $55 in my area, it is a super value! Thanks a million for your view and comment! It is super appreciated and cheers~
Just means more JD for the restuvus that really need to be in the mood for the orange bitter notes to go buy that RB. Even JD SM7 mouthfeel is generally more viscous and preferable creating a longer finish, JDSB same, and SBBP hellsyeah baby!!!
Hey McKyle! JD Barrel proof is a wonderful pour and if I made the same video tonight, would probably win 😆. I love all of the Jack Daniel's lineup these days and I can't get enough of them 😂.
Thank you so much for your view and comment! Greatly appreciate it and cheers ~

Im going with JD
Hey Eduardo! Welcome back! I can't blame you as the Jack Daniel's single barrel is fantastic whiskey! Maybe it was the food I had before or just my mood that night, but Rare Breed was just a tad better at that moment. I'm sure there will be many nights I will be enjoying the JD and think I made the wrong decision. Thanks a ton for the view and the comment!! Cheers!
When winter is coming by tradition here in the south I go with a affordable higher rye bourbon like Wild Turke 101. When your nose is stopped up nothing beats a cherry, vanilla bomb like a Recolla cough drop!
JD wins for me. Both are great, but JD has more of a rich decadence to it.
Hey Jason! JD is a great bottle and I can't blame anyone who prefers it over the Rare Breed. For me that day (if I remember correctly), the standard bourbon notes of caramel, brown sugar, cinnamon spices, and sweet oak won the day for me over the JD. But I drink both bottles regularly and will always have both on my shelf at all times!
Thanks a ton for your view and comment! Greatly appreciate it and cheers~
Rare Breed!
Hey Christine! Rare Breed is a good one and a bourbon that is just classic bourbon that I go back to again and again and again!
Thank you so much for your view and comment! Greatly appreciate it and cheers~
YW!!
Jack Daniels, not really that close for me!
Hey JD! Jack Daniel's Barrel Proof is a wonderful pour and can't blame you if you like it more than the Rare Breed! 😆 This is the beauty of bourbons as it is in the eye of the beholder (or the palate of the drinker? 🤣).
Thanks a million for watching and have a fantastic day!
Jd all the way.
JD single barrel barrel proof whiskey is a good one and one bottle I'll always have on my shelf! But that day, Rare Breed won but it could easily be the JD tonight 😆.
Thank you so much for your view and comment! Greatly appreciate it and cheers ~
JD SBBP ALL DAY!!!!!
JD SiB BP is a fantastic bottle and one I will always have on my shelf! But Rare Breed was just better that night and is also a bottle I will have on my shelf. I will probably have more than one of both LOL. Can't go wrong with either!
Thank you so much for your view and comment! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving and cheers~
