Declan rice took up the same position at every corner. Man utd never marked him because they were stacking zonal at the front post. Arsenal noticed and in the 2nd half they started putting players as blockers between utd defenders and rice so he had space. Paid off in the 96th min. Credit tifo

@jamesmccaul2945 when has this ever been a rule? There's always been blockers in every team sport. They are not fouling them, they are holding them, they are just forcing them back by making runs into the 6 yard when the ball is played.

Viera is always impactful coming from the bench. But if its starting a match ill start havertz over him for physicality and height
I was the same. I thought he was too weak without the technical ability to make up for it. I didn't think he was anywhere near the level.

Yes, it would have made a lot more sense to have Fabio Vieira and Reiss Nelson in the box during corners. Two of the smallest and weakest players in the Arsenal side, instead of Declan Rice. Great insight and analysis. Numpty.
We're just 4 games in, Rice is going to get better.... and Hazertz can't actually get much worse so by default he gets better, or plays less and less.

However, Arteta is very adamant, he shoehorned Willian for one full season despite signs that he wasn't doing good. That's my only reservation on Havertz.😢
I think Arteta gave Willian about 8-10 games and then he was benched - for Saka (who never looked back!).

For Man United’s goal Rice wasn’t in that position cos he pressed high and it led to Arsenal getting the ball so I think he did what he’s supposed to do, Havertz just gave the ball away badly

I remember fans slating Odegaard because we didn't get Maddison, then it was Ben White because we loaned out Saliba, , then us keeping Xhaka, and then it was Fabio Vieira last season. Great player, who is changing his game at the age of 24 and doing it at such a rapid pace. He will get better in the final third, that final ball is not there, maybe as he nurtures that chemistry with his peers his vision will improve as he will know which positions they like to take up in different phases of the game.
Southgate must be loving this. This also improves his squads offensive ability as the duo of Rice and Bellingham might become unplayable (already difficult to play against).
Declan is the Xhaka upgrade, not Havertz. Let White play RB, let Partey stay at the 6. That's the magic formula
Get Partey next to him with Odegaard in front and Arsenal will be hard to break

good analysis, but incomplete. Teaching transitions between phases properly tells the story about both Declan Rice and Kai Havertz, but staying on topic just look at the pass map you brought up to see what I mean. Declan has strong pass map numbers in the traditional 6 area in phase 1 and 2 of the build up from defensive third to middle third because he joins the center backs and plays alongside Zinchenko in a double pivot early. Then when Arsenal progress the ball and play past the pressure the Argentinian box midfield rotates into a diamond and so Declan moves into #8 positions--he very clearly rotates into the left 8 position almost exclusively. He can do this because Arsenal typically will target their wingers as a release and Rice personally has endless stamina and so he offers front footed #8 play with #6 recovery. The real story is that Arteta has changed to a diamond midfield to play higher and he can do that with Declan being able to transition between 2 positions (#6 and #8) in both defensive and attacking phases. On another note, Rice not being in the traditional #6 is NOT why Arsenal gave up that goal exclusively as they are taught rotations based on queues where other players are going. In this situation right backs and left backs will typically invert. So why did they do this? It is game to game. ETH had Man United clearly defending in a low block and time wasting all game; such is the fear that Arsenal create nowadays evidently - as if Man United's expensive assembly of players should be playing like they are peak Blackburn and Sam Allardyce is their gaffer. So Arteta's system is designed to put an extra attacker higher when Arsenal face low blocks and that is what they are doing. White or Zinchenko should have been inverting here, I would have to look at the tape to understand why they are not. Rice is where he is supposed to be.

To be fair he was. He isn’t as great defensively as they make him out to be, he will make a tackle occasionally or make a pass, but by and large he’s massively overrated.

I used to buy FourFourTwo 20 years ago. That and EDGE magazine were the top tier magazines back when I was still buying magazines.
Rice would often get forward for West Ham and pop up in wide areas on the pitch. I don't think putting Rice on the back post was any evolution for him as a player. He can carry the ball from deep, take on a player, get past AND play the ball. But I guess once he does that for Arsenal, it'll be another side of his game that Arteta got out of him!
Let's all just pretend that Rice didn't cost over £100m and had all this in his locker already.

If Arsenal want the best out of Rice and Partey they need to be in a joint pivot of a 4-2-1-3. Havertz clearly doesn’t quite cut it yet so he should be an understudy for Ødegaard plus if Zinchenko inverts it’ll be a 3-3-1-3 similar to the Ajax model and if we can play like that plus the usual 4-3-3 I reckon we could win a big title this year (if everybody) stays injury free from now on

Ben White was at fault for United's goal.....all he had to do was time the pass and lunge in to stop it going through to Rashford. There wasn't even any real pace on the ball and it wasn't a one touch pass.

I stopped listening when you said he is a premium upgrade on Thomas Partey. When fully fit Partey is still the best in the world. He receives under pressure and skilfully turn away and play incisive passes. Rice is more mobile and not as injury prone hence why he is being used there.

You are over analysing a random moment in the game. Arsenal got a corner in the last minute of the game so they sent all their big, physically imposing players that can jump and head q ball forward, Rice being one of them. It wasn't planned or premeditated. It just happened. The real question is why did the mugs at Manchester United leave Rice alone at the backpost?😂
Go look at every arsenal corner in the game. Rice was on the back post for all of them, mostly unmarked. In the second half, you'll see players act as blockers to stop players from getting to Rice. It was genuinely 100% a calculated move.

but that means you are playing with two inverted fullbacks (Timber,Zinchenko) except Zinchenko cant really play as a LCB in a 3 when the RB inverts.
you have to remember that united were playing with 4th and 5th choice cb's which were being held and that rices' shot was deflected into the net. to me arsenal yesterday were as good as they are going to be this year whereas united have so much room for improvement. and on the offside goal it could have gone either way and you would be making a different video
