How to remove security tags & how they work

  • Today, let's see how to remove security tags from clothes or other items in case they accidentally left them on in the shop. Let's also see how do they work. They are called security tags, ink tags, electronic article surveillance (EAS), anti theft tags or inventory control tags and they are used to stop people from shoplifting (stealing stings from shops). They are supposed to be removed by the cashier, but occasionally they forget to do it and then you have to remove them yourself. There are numerous techniques, some of them include brute force and may cause injury or damage the item, but the easiest way is of course using a strong neodymium magnet.

For anyone here that is looking to separate hard drive magnets from brackets cleanly and in one piece - soak the bracket and magnet in acetone overnight. This dissolves the adhesive and allows you to *CAREFULLY* remove the magnet from the metal bracket.

Thanks for the tutorial man, just bought a very expensive shirt online that came to the US all the way from Europe and one of these tags was on it. I knew it had to be something simple like magnets so clerks at the stores would not have a difficult process removing them, but didn’t know the method used and didn’t want to play around finding out in fear there was ink inside it; but this simple trick worked. Thankfully I keep a strong magnet on the fridge.

  • @mysock351C

The three ball-bearings in the cage/collar is basically a linear one-way roller clutch. As long as the angle is shallow enough, the force needed to overcome the friction will increase faster than the pulling force, basically acting as a wedge in the reverse direction. This also means you have to be careful when pushing it in on clothing (or anything compressible) with a magnet not strong enough to overcome the spring since the balls can actually lock the cage in place and make it almost impossible to remove.

Forget the technique I'm watching it for his accent and the way he talks at this point 😂😂

I had something similar holding my duvet cover in place and lost the magnet it came with. I tried a few of the suggestions here on YT. I thought my magnet was not strong enough but the key is to push in and then pull away! Thanks!

Steal the tag in-store and plant it on an unsuspecting person. Much more fun.

They should make those more secure. That technology is old enough. As usual nice and explanatory video

Once I had that problem. Cutting the plastic bulge section off with a disc grinder works fine :)
    I didn't have a magnet suitable
