That's great to know. I was struck by what a wonderful and memorable character she created here. Still, Beau was foolish for switching to young Jennifer. Goldy had the whole package, so why switch? But then, there wouldn't be this fun Columbo episode.
This was the only Columbo episode that Peter Falk directed. He soon found that directing himself was a lot of work.
Can you imagine the arguments he got into with the star?
He almost quit for not directing.
@@bobheck8326 I hate it when actors get big egos thinking they can handle other aspects of the film production just because they have acquired some fame in being an actor and then blackmailing the producers to get the directors chair. Whilst I looked his portrayal as Columbo, I wasn't a huge fan of him beind the camera. Read up on what he did with during the filming of the episode "Dead Weight". The guest star Eddie Albert told Falk, "I always wanted to meet you, I always wanted to work with you, but you're a real ...".
Not only was it a lot of work, he was clearly not very good at it but he had no business in threatening to quit over not getting the director's chair and then screwing it up and calling it quits because he couldn't handle the pressure.
I can think of worse episodes. Did a good job imo
I love how the guy just hopps in the back of the policetruck in the end. Like "welp, lets get this over with, I played I lost, bring me jail, will ya?"

This is my favorite episode from Season 1 Peter Falk's directorial debut "Blueprint for murder"
I've seen this episode so many times but I never noticed the six shooter on the car door handle until now.
The car is swapped out and the door handles are missing in a couple scenes. Not in this clip, it jumped at me in the full episode.
the traffic cop is frightening, with scar in the face and somber mannerism. he got it all.
I've watched a lot of these videos, and that's the first time I've noticed myself feeling tense.

I might be wrong but I think it’s the same actor who plays the bad guy in ‘Scanners’ a sci-fi horror flick from this era. Had a very menacing look to him. [Edit] - Michael Ironside is the one I’m thinking of.
As I recall this was the first episode that REALLY got me hooked. So clever. So very very clever.
One of very few episodes where we didn't see the actual murder.

Kind of a Jean Smart vibe. She's prettier than the younger Mrs. Williamson.
Into about 32 minutes of the episode, Columbo tells the architect/suspect that when looking into the flight logs from LA, they found no "Williamson" on any flights to which the architect proposes that given Williamson's vast holdings around the world, he may have often flown out of the country under a assumed name. Assumed name? Really? Even back in the day of Columbo, the name on the passport had to match the name on the ticket, and it was illegal to hold multiple passports with different names, so that was a pretty lame exchange in the story. Shame on the screenwriters!!!
Also, how in the world is the job site for a major skyscraper left with no after hours security so the architect can just drive on site with a body in his trunk? No contractor could get insurance without a secure site after work hours and the site belongs to the contractor, not the architect. I nice idea for a story, but not very well researched for the plot line.
Forrest Tucker had a big personality, it's somewhat unfortunate his role in Columbo was rather limited.

I like both country and classic music so it would not be unusual for me to listen to either one in the car.
But in this episode the murdered mans first wife, Goldie, tells Columbo country music was all he ever listened to.

At 2:50 analytical deception detection expert Peter Hyatt would've been on to him just like columbo. He only needed to say yes he's missing but had to extend it unnecessarily. Allowing suspicion.
All the killer had to do was not do what he did. He walked right into getting caught! Not very clever of him whatsoever.
Such is the case of most Columbo murderers, really.
They almost never put up a fight, and have a chat as they're being arrested. Far fetched, but easy on the eyes!
At first, I had the same thought, but these guys were not violent criminals. They were trying very hard to cover their crime, only to be pursued fiercely and doggedly by Columbo, and when they finally got caught, they were just resigned without fighting back. What's far-fetched, IMO, is the speed that Columbo caught them .. but that is for the benefit of us, the audience.
When Columbo suspects violence from his target, he brings backup. In this case he brought overwhelming force, the group at the construction site and two more police cars full.
Do you think all people put up a fight when they are arrested? Now that's far-fetched.

They went for 60 minutes but they had to condense them to under 10 minutes by taking out unnecessary and repetitive content because the old TVs couldn’t hold anything over 10 minutes.
The mondo Columbus shows are very short always less than 10 minutes because of the primitive mondo TVs they had back then. The old old old TVs could not hold more than 10 minutes of show as they used CRT Catholic Ray Tubs technology and non Dylan Mulvaney CLT or Claw Technology. No harm no fowl. They tried Dylan Mulvaney to shorten the shows advertising and tried to produce a non racist TV set with Motorola involvement with flypaper control and Dylan Mulvaney CEO.

Goldie Williamson might be one of the best supporting Columbo characters ever. She steals each scene she's in.
Love her. She’d be my favorite ex-wife too. Heck, she might not even be an ex. She was a pistol and a hoot and respectfully, much more intertesting, substantive, and discerning than the much younger “newer” Mrs. Williamson. Love how Goldie calls Columbo “lover”. “Jennifer gives him youth, for the rest he comes to me”.

At 3:50 I disagree - the new wife is definitely not “twice as pretty” And I’d say she looks maybe 10 years not half as younger. Loved the elegance and grace of the first wife’s character for saying it though:)
I always liked to watch Columbo, who always caught the murderers. He was called only to those cases in which murder was supposed. The show was very imaginative and goog to watch.

Janis Page who co-starred with Doris Day in Doris' first film Romance On The High Seas and later in Please Don't Eat The Daisies. She played Lou Grants girlfriend in a couple of episodes of Mary Tyler Moore show. Wonderfully talented actress. ❤
For those interested and curious in regards to the classical music that's being played in this episode, it's Brahms' Piano Concerto No 2, 2nd movement. That concerto as a whole is just an amazing piece of work both pianistically and orchestrally. 🎹🎻🙂🎶🎵
Aha, someone else caught that. Funny that the radio station always played that movement when the murderer was in the car. btw, that was NOT Van Cliburn playing it. His style really stands out and that version seemed a bit lackluster by comparison. I've been listening to VC's performance on vinyl since the '60s with Fritz Reiner & the Chicago symphony. (RCE Re Seal series) Lost mine in a fire but have it on CD now. The first movement therin is breathtaking.

Back then it was easy to leave a car at the airport anonymously. At Detroit Metropolitan Airport they would find cars in the lot with a dead body in the trunk sitting for 2 weeks.

It seems inconceivable that police never searched the ranch. Also, why was Columbo called in for what was originally a missing person investigation? It was established in earlier episodes that he is only brought in when there's a body.
That’s what’s I said too and if the culprit played it cool and left the body where it was he would’ve had Columbo beat I believe only connection was the music
I think Columbo had him under surveillance once he established him as the main suspect.. He had to get the body from where he had it hidden before they started construction of the building, so he could bury the body underneath it.
The ex did claim he was dead. And the rest is fiction...

In that case if it was a real world investigation, the detective in charge would check the last time the car had a service and whether the mechanic who serviced it, or the last person who washed it changed the radio station. I Don't think a court would buy a factory setting unless every car of that model had their radios set to country music by default. In any case it wouldn't have mattered as Columbo caught the murderer red handed trying to dispose of the body.
This plot only works if we overlook the fact that the police don't search the place the victim was last seen alive. The stables where he kept his horses. Searching that barn would have cost a lot less than tearing up that concrete pylon. If I was Columbo's boss I would have given him a right ear bashing for that. Problem is if they find the body in the barn then there is no way for Columbo to pin the murder on the architect since there is no evidence at all that he did it. The car radio tuned to a classical channel instead of a country one wouldn't cut it in a court.
