I just did one on a 2008 Altima and I used a similar method by using my ball joint tool and a 1 1/16 socket. I did have to remove the upper control arm which took all of about 15 minutes, but it does add a little more work. The part you omitted is usually the bolt for the shock seizes to the bushing sleeve and destroys it which is the more common reason these bushings are replaced. Then you have to cut it to remove the shock which makes this entire job more interesting. I like your method much better. The problem is knowing the sizes of the parts you used. I used a little grease and the bushing slipped right in. The freezer method also works but I have never had a problem using grease.
Man I've been struggling to get the bushing of my Z for quite sometime, its been on jackstands for 3 days, and who's video I find Ma Boi JayzTwoCents, not only you had really helpful tips on hard tubing to get my build done, but also now helping me with my car. Thank you sir.
A good tip is to put a little motor oil on the threads of the bolt you are using to pull/push the bushings in and out. It should reduce the friction and reduce the likely hood of stripping the threads out.
For future reference, to press stuff in instead of greasing the surface, just throw it in the freezer an hour ahead of time and you could also throw a little heat on the receiving end(on the knuckle). Almost all aviation wheels for the Navy are pressed like that to make short order of the work.
UA-cam just recommended this from my searches on parts! LoL. I am in the process of changing my 07 G35 Coupe over to coilovers and ran into bad bushings on the rears too! Thanks for the video man. I had to pay the Z1 tax though to get replacement bushings and bolts for the rears. =( If I had seen this I'd have gotten the ones you used.
I see that tech guys and cars pretty much go hand in hand, I myself love cars too. Getting more and more excited each time I see you post a new video on this channel! ^_^
Amazing. I bought one of those Ball Joint remover tools from Harbor Freight. It came with 8 dyes and one heck of a C-Clamp. This thing has a LOT of girth to it. The other thing that impressed me about it was the way the portion that sat in the ACME Screw did a free spin and , at the same time , was very sturdy. I did a knuckle bushing replace on my 2010 Ford Flex. All the dyes that came with the tool were too big. I like what you did with that 1-1/16 socket. However , my knuckle bushing measured 47mm (roughly 1-7/8") . I took a cutoff piece of 1-1/2" black pipe , turned it on my lathe to clear the rubber grommet and had to make a couple passes on the O.D. to clear the I.D. on the knuckle. Freaking FORD !! The upper knuckle bushing connects to the upper control arm , nbd, but ....... the shoulder bolt that goes through doesn't clear the upper brake assembly bolt that is right in line (perpendicular) . Can't just remove the bolt and be done ....nnnnoooo.... have to take the caliper off .aaàarrrgggh !! Great video and a lot of helpful comments . Thank You very much.
Oh ,and that tool from H.F. was only $60 !! Maddox was the brand name of memory serves correctly. Doesn't hurt to oil the ACME Screw on the C-Clamp either as someone suggested to you in the comments. Thanks again . Great video.
I just did something very similar to my g37 rear diff bushing, with a very similarly made tool. What nightmare that was. Took a full 8 hours just to press it out, 2 clicks of the ratchet at a time due to clearance issues. This job didn't look to bad. I'm running an oem style set of coil overs, so I didn't need to replace this bushing
Awesome how to Jay! Thanks for sharing Nizzy with us. And thanks for spreading the idea that working on cars isn't scary if you think through what you are doing. Built is more fun than bought!
I didnt expect to replace my bushing with SPL when my shock started to rust. When I remove the bolt the bushing just cracked into dust. Time to get the solid one. Thanks for the video
Jay once you're done with all these suspension and bushing mods you should collab with Matt Farah and have him One Take your car, hopefully w/ you riding along as well. I know he's driven quite a few Z-cars so it could be beneficial to you and the audience to see that. Plus I just think it would be really fun to see. BTW I listened to his Smoking Tire Podcast where you guest starred; good stuff. Keep up the great work and please keep the car vlogs coming.
Just watched this so you gained plus 1 sub... a quick tip, if no-one else has mentioned it, store the new bushing in the freezer over night to get them max full cold, will help a little, nit heaps but a little is more than nothing.
Now with those bushings do you notice the shock housings rotating and/or possibly binding? I have some and mine keep rotating until they cant anymore. And they wont straighten out unless i twist them my self
I do not know much on that are of cars but what happens is you add too much lithium grease so will be a little more easy to get the bushing in? I am on the process to get my car done, of course I am getting pro help not to do it but check that I am doing right! Thanks Jay for that tutorial I did get the parts. I am still waiting that my friend gets the collars to start working.
Somethings weren't meant to be greased in order not to move, a little grease can help the component in but doesn't allow it to move when it's installed
Hello how's it going? I watched your video and it was very helpful because I'm going to do the same thing on my M35. But where can I get that BOLT from? What's the size and length?
I took my entire engine apart on a public parking area, fixed what was broken, put it back together and managed to do the valve timing adjustment properly. Later I failed several times trying to change my rear shock absorbers. I HATE suspension work. ^^
If you have an industrial Freezer that goes down to -80C they'd fall in basically. A normal Freezer helps a ton though is you freeze the bushing and therefore shrink it.
Jay, I didn't know you were into cars. I think I'm a second version of you. Me love Computers and Cars And all sorts of tech. Only thing missing is da funds to build a PC. I live a sad life.
benoit.... listen dude, you have no clue what your talking about. you're telling someone their wrong when your even more wrong. first of all, installing aftermarket parts isn't covered by warrantee. even if there is warrantee work to be done to a vehicle why the hell would you not do it the easiest way. do you think there are nissan reps. standing around watching everyone. the point of being flat rate is to be efficient. fix it right the first time is the rule, its the only rule.
Actually, this is exactly how a tech will do. Customer gets billed for 4-5 hours per side, tech gets it done in an hour and gets paid for the book time. This is how techs make good money doing what they do.
Hey Jay, I forgot to say why Fram filters are not the best. I had oil pressure problems with them on my Mitsubishi. I also have seen them cut apart and they are poor quality in the material department. They used to be good filters in the 80/90's, but went to hell after that. Just helping out.
hahaha oo dear. as a licensed mechanic i hope everyone watches this video, my business will rise 300% after most of the people out there attempt and then proceed to mess there cars up 3 times worse than they already were. YOU, did a good job there Jay, and some others may as well... BUT most people are HORRIBLE at fixing things and their disasters always seem to find there way to my doorstep hahaha PS i very much appreciate all your videos! Your relatively hands on approach is awesome, and i find it is best to be self taught but perhaps with some good background knowledge and a touch of skill (albeit sometimes expensive when booboo's happen) I am thoroughly surprised in our modern day that you can make a reasonable living off of youtube video production, as for me i'll stay in the trenches where i belong nice and dirty, computers is just my hobby, electronic diagnostics on cars is my forte' and of course turnin wrenches too happy wrenchin!
Hello Jay, Nice Nismo and great to know you actually track it! I actually sold my track prepped Z about a month ago and miss it everyday. Are you part of the Maxxis Corner3 Motorsports challenge page on Facebook? Also if you keep doing those solid bushings, it's going to be stiff.... hope you don't daily drive that thing. Thanks for the informative video's.
Awesome videos about the Z Jay ! I just don't agree with the grease putting in a metal bushing i learned in mechanics school not to use grease on metal on metal because it takes space and makes it harder to put in .
You are correct. Don't use grease on metal to metal, confirmed by Z1 Motorsports over the phone. Use oil. This company has a video and article that goes hand in hand with JayZtwocents www.suspension.com/blog/how-to-install-a-bushing-without-a-press/
engines and clutch work is easy just look up torque specs and you won't hurt it. it is always wise to get a shop manual for the car you are working on and i don't mean cheap ass chilton manuals get a manufacturer direct manual. it will not only save you money it will save you time as they break down the steps precisely for you. i have been working on cars since i was 12 and rebuilt my first engine at 16 for my mustang i had.
Noice job on this. If we get a 370 in the shop for this ill have to show off to the older guys and do this. I do have a question though. Was there enough room to get a C frame press from a ball joint service kit in that space? I feel like one of those might be stronger with less chance of a bolt snapping. Plus the possibility to use an impact would be nice.
DAWG!!! JAY!!!! You should get that gerry-rigged tool into a production piece! You know how much drifter and Jeep/Offroad guys would LOVE that tool? [Especially, if you make a piece that caters to most sizes (i.e. caters to more sizes than 1 1/16) ]
Dont try this on a 2012-2016 ford explorer xlt the rivets on the bolts break and then gets stuck on i tried the strongest bolts there are also the washers crush in. Make sure you push it out towards the front out and to get the new one back in you push front to back.
8:20 - 8:25 "I promise." **4 months later and still no walk around video.** Lol just kidding Jay. Sometime soon (ideally), I would like to see a breakdown video of everything you've done to the Z so far, as well as future plans for it. That'd be a really cool video.

Hey Jay, ASE Master certified auto tech here. What you came up with there is exactly how I would have done it if I had the same tools. Nice work!
When I found out you did cars too and not just computers I subbed immediately.

Great video.
Just did the exact same thing on my G35; works flawlessly. Thanks for the vid.
Before I was PC Enthusiast , Now I’m a car enthusiast 370z . 😂 Jayz all the way ❤
I'm a PC gaming fan and I'm having problems with my car lately, so it's very impressive to find you doing this stuff too lol
Thanks alot, just did both my rear knuckes using your video! Did take me like 4 hrs but Im happy with results! 👌🏽👍🏼👌🏽👍🏼
I love these videos jay!
I have to do some suspension work for the first time and these videos give me the confidence to get on it.
It's cool to see so many people that like tech AND cars. Maybe some day I'll have a car and computer as cool as yours.
You should have put that new bushing into the freezer for the night......would have slid in alot easier.
Really my bottom bushing is fighting me I’m going to try this
Wow, I did not know you did car stuff as well! I have to do this bushing repair soon, haha!
I'm not into cars and just watch your PC channel, but this was actually very interesting and I watched the whole lot!
I just did something very similar to my g37 rear diff bushing, with a very similarly made tool. What nightmare that was. Didn't realize you had a car channel! Sick!
Saved me so much time didn’t think of using a nut and bolt to pull it out
I didnt expect to replace my bushing with SPL when my shock started to rust. When I remove the bolt the bushing just cracked into dust. Time to get the solid one. Thanks for the video

You sir, are the reason I am now trying to get a 370Z. Hopefully next summer.
That was a brilliant improvised tool Jay!
Just watched this so you gained plus 1 sub... a quick tip, if no-one else has mentioned it, store the new bushing in the freezer over night to get them max full cold, will help a little, nit heaps but a little is more than nothing.
Working smart not working hard, I love it Jay. Such a smart solution.
Love these videos, keep up the awesome work!
Any comments on how the car handled before vs. after these bushings were replaced?
Did you come up with that tool on your own? Pure genius.
So you have a link for those bushings ?
Great video! Any idea if these bushings are the same size as my 2012 M37?
Can you list the parts you used and where to get them? Thanks
Love the videos Jay! Came from watching Nizzy on Tj's channel and now I'm here! Getting a Z myself soon so I just love watching these videos!
impact driver? would that have helped made it easier ..wondering ?
Now with those bushings do you notice the shock housings rotating and/or possibly binding? I have some and mine keep rotating until they cant anymore. And they wont straighten out unless i twist them my self
Excellent and just in time I found this video since I have to do them on a g35
Your very good tips still working to this day . Thanks
I'm happy to see that I'm not the only nerd/mechanic. Master tech buy trade, computer guy for fun.
Thanks for helping me save money.👍🏾
you rock I like how you think outside the box and I thought u only worked on computers
Is that a teaser for wideband o2 I see in the background?
glad i saw this. great ideal. didnt know you were into cars.
What size of bolt you used
Really enjoying the Nizzy videos :P It's the car version of Skunkworks! :D
really love the car channel
Ok, its official, I dont think Jay has released a video yet without a dirty reference in it.
Oh! And do you think that shocket would work on the front bushing?
Time for an Air Compressor and some impact tools Jay! Also, if you do this again? FREEZE the bushing, and heat the receiver...
+WreckDiver99 good comment, its what i was gonna say. Even just freezing the busing would have helped. Still, nice video jay.

Hello how's it going? I watched your video and it was very helpful because I'm going to do the same thing on my M35. But where can I get that BOLT from? What's the size and length?
what size was the receiving cup you used
i rebuilt the motor in my 94 chevy 1500 in my moms kitchen a long while back
What brand bushing are those I’m have the same problem on my q50 please help
I took my entire engine apart on a public parking area, fixed what was broken, put it back together and managed to do the valve timing adjustment properly. Later I failed several times trying to change my rear shock absorbers. I HATE suspension work. ^^
that was ME texting you! YOU STOP it! You're killing my business by showing people how to do this stuff!!! ;) Just kidding! Great job MacGuyver!!!
+The Adventures of Scott and ... Thats what Im here for :P
+Cars and Vlogs with JayzTwoCents I think I like this channel more then your main channel and I've only watched 2 videos on it so far
Jay, I didn't know you were a SIM!
Way to level up your Handiness Skill
(Ratchet in Fast Forward = Nostalgia )
lucky I have a hoist... what sucks is that I have to replace all my bushings. done my clutch and many other things already. not easy to do :P
No pneumatic tools Jay? Subbed you here too, even though I'm a mechanic, love your other channel...
If you have an industrial Freezer that goes down to -80C they'd fall in basically. A normal Freezer helps a ton though is you freeze the bushing and therefore shrink it.

where did you get that long bolt?
are the bushings on the 350z the same size? thanks
where can i find these tools
Freeze the bushing and heat the nuckle, makes things way easyer.
What camera are you using ? It looks insanely good !
What's the name of tha bushing? The new one you put
mechanics don't use that method because their air tools won't fit.. ;P
+Josh Ford Sure they will. That's why I have swivel sockets and such.
?

kind of surprised you aren't using a snap on set.
Out of all the videos I watched this made the most since..I hope this works on my G35
excellent choice of bgm in this video jay!
mind telling me the name and artist?
hahaha oo dear. as a licensed mechanic i hope everyone watches this video, my business will rise 300% after most of the people out there attempt and then proceed to mess there cars up 3 times worse than they already were. happy wrenchin!
You could have tried throwing it in the freezer while you got the stock one out... oh well
it would heat up really fast
The freezer trick is an old one that mechanics used. You would be amazed what a few thousands difference makes.
Hello Jay, Nice Nismo and great to know you actually track it! I actually sold my track prepped Z about a month ago and miss it everyday. Are you part of the Maxxis Corner3 Motorsports challenge page on Facebook?

Is this visit worth a single entry on the occasion giveaway Mr. Bushing?
Can you do mine on my 2005 g35???
These videos make me so jealous. No rust at all. That job for me would have been that plus 30min to an hour of letting it soak in penetrating oil.
Awesome videos about the Z Jay ! I just don't agree with the grease putting in a metal bushing i learned in mechanics school not to use grease on metal on metal because it takes space and makes it harder to put in .

You should have put the bushing in the freezer for a while so it shrunk, would have gone in much easier
Upload one of the pics of Nizzy from the garage with josh and nick as your profile pic
6:01 watercool it!
What is the bolt size ( length and diameter)?
You like doing suspension work? Care to replace the front suspension on my rustbucket?
j/k :P
You make me want a Nissan, not necessarily a Z lol but still
Jay.... you smart.
DAWG!!!

Sometime soon (ideally), I would like to see a breakdown video of everything you've done to the Z so far, as well as future plans for it. That'd be a really cool video.
Impact gun dude!
+John Emery Probably to much friction, most likely brake the bolt head off or something, you saw how the nut fused with a washer..
Ye, was gonna say ye might wanna add another washer.
Was lookin a little sketchy for a second xD
Why make a separate channel for this?
