  • Learn how simple it is to replace control arm & trailing arm bushings, or knuckle bushings(as shown in this video) by using the DIY press tool shown in this video. It will make removing old, worn, noisy bushings an easy task. Parts for this control arm & trailing arm bushing tool can be purchased at your local hardware store or home improvement store for under $20. This tool can also be modified for different size bushings by using larger pipe and different size sockets. You can also use this tool for other applications. Save a lot of money by replacing the bushing yourself, instead of paying a machine shop to do the job. Enjoy!

ATTENTION: In the video I referred to the suspension part with the faulty bushing as the "Trailing Arm", that was incorrect. I was replacing the KNUCKLE BUSHING. Thanks for watching!

Thank you so much. I am stuck in a downward spiral toward a complete dead end, but this bushing compression tool may save the diy project. I was "simply" intending to change the rear wheel bearing in my GMC Terrain, until I snapped off two of the four bolts holding the WB to the knuckle. That led to a decision to remove the knuckle, and thus the need to remove two control arm bushings. You have given the weekend, wannabe thorough mechanic hope!

Out of at least 5 videos and 3 or 4 writeups on how to do this without specialty tools, your video is the one that made the most sense to me, lol. I mean, everyone else did/said something similar but what clicked for me was having that socket the right size to slide through the arm/into that fitting. Thanks so much man. I think the spiders in my garage now know how to curse :P

The only suggestion I would offer is to use anti-seize for the inside of the opening. It will help if you have to remove it and won't absorb or attract water like soap does.

I have the same problem finding anything to press in my suspension bushings that go to the strut so I haven't fooled with them. I have bearing press kit like autozone has but nothing that will work. I gotta say I'm glad it worked. I was thinking of trying to make something similar but hadn't gotten around to it yet but now I know if will work and have a better idea of what to do I think I'll probably do it soon.

Hello , I,ve been doing this for years on old land - rovers , you are doing very well with this , but can I make a few points please : you have a relatively new vehicle here , on an old vehicle , these bell out hard right into the housing ( hole ) , & I have ripped the thread off of a 9/16 UNF hardened steel bolt trying to get them out this way , cranking with 2 sockets & ratchets , the bigger the bush is , the tighter they are in , a moderate smear of copper grease on both , the inside of the hole , & the outside of the bush , helps a lot to locate these bushes , & helps to prevent corrosion jamming them in hard for the next time you have to change it . It,s not a bad idea to copper - grease the through - bolt as well . Also , ensure you have all burrs carefully removed out of " the hole " without enlarging it before squeezing the new one in . This might sound like nit - picking but it all helps snatch success out of the jaws of failure . Good job from an old - timer ! ( use copper grease , not mineral grease as that will destroy your new rubber component )
