  • Building The Wilkinson Modern T Style Guitar Kit Part 4 of 4 - Complete Assembly & How Does It Sound?
    This is video is Part 4 of a 4, documenting how I built a StewMac.com, Wilkinson Modern Telecaster Style guitar kit. This video covers the final assembly, including installing pickups, controls… everything necessary to play. And also how the finished guitar sounds. I play it and Spencer Ahuna, owner of Big Island Guitars, plays it and compares it to his 1971 Fender Telecaster.
    Below are links to the kit and some of the luthier tools I purchased:

    Pretty cool. It's sounding like a Tele for sure, even when played thru that digital floor thing. It's got me thinking about building one of these myself. Great video!

      You should Jonathan! Everything in the kit is so well made, with attention to detail, especially the neck. The Wilkinson components, especially the pickups, were outstanding. I was considering getting the less expensive kit and buying better pickups and components, but the cost would have been more than the Wilkinson upgraded kit. So I took a chance and am very happy with the tone. The directions were a little lacking, but hopefully, my other videos will help. Mainly it was figuring out the neck pickup and installing the ground wire under the bridge. I just had to take things apart and put back together, no big deal. I am going to research the modern tele neck pickups and see if I can convert to something that is easier to adjust, without taking the pickguard off. Although, it sounds so good now, I may not mess with it. Thanks for watching, and best wishes on your own build, if you decide to go for it.

    Only issue I had was the copper grounding foil was touching the output jack connector wire. Took a while to figure out why it was shorting out guitar. Next time going to use shielding paint. Happy with the finished Tele. Watching your video in advance Steve helped.

      That's probably a good idea. FYI - I found a DIY link to make your own shielding paint out of dry graphite lubricant thatl I want to try out. ua-cam.com/video/fhxjzbxmDxA/v-deo.html. Your Tele turned out nice!

    Aloha, Steven. Thanks for the videos on this build. I’m on Oahu, and I’m doing the same kit right now, except I have the maple neck. I thought it was so funny because I am doing it in a very similar fashion. BLO neck and stained body so I can see the grain. I had the same issue with the wipe-on finish so I’m going to a spray as well. Awesome, job on the details in the videos, thanks again.

      Aloha Steelichi9, thanks! Make sure to send photos and share how it sounds. If you have access to a garage or spece to spray, that would be best. I didn't (sprayed outside) and I had to sand a lot. It still turned out pretty well. Have fun!

    Looks and sounds great! It was fun to hear the shop owner play it along side the 71 fender. I think you will agree this is a great kit and great value. I wish the instructions had been clearer, as I was a first time builder and made some rookie mistakes. I actually prefer playing this build to my Baja tele.

    • @StevenParente
      @StevenParente  4 роки тому +1

      Right on Bob! It is a great kit. I also made a couple of rookie mistakes, but I pointed them out. Hopefully other builders can avoid them. It plays very nicely, as you've pointed out and the Wilkinson pickups did very well when compared to the 71 Strat. I think I might figure out how to make the neck pickup adjustable, without having to take the pickup guard off. Maybe I'll do a video on that, when I figure it out. Thanks for all your input and photos. And for watching!

      Steven Parente one of the crucial mistakes I made was on installing the bolt on neck. The 6th string os close to the edge of the fretboard where the neck meets the body. It’s still very playable, but because the guitar came out so great, I may pay 299 for a Mexican fender neck, which you can buy directly from fender.

    That 60 cycle hum is still there. I would suggest a ground between both pots and or a hot rails type of pickup. Nice job on the build

    Great inspiration Steve, thanks for taking the time and effort to shoot/edit this for everyone.
    I have been looking at a StewMac wilk kit for some time, but was waiting to find...someone like you, who put together this step-by-step. I was ready to pull the trigger...right up until the moment I noticed the over-routing in the bridge pickup slot. The bridge plate doesn't QUITE cover it, and sadly, for an anal retentive detail freak like me...it's a show stopper. I just couldn't go through all that effort...labour of love if you will, to see that manufacturing error...poor QC? a Friday body? Who knows, and for most folks it would be a "meh" ..a sort of "well Dave, you know...for the money"...but I'll need to send them a kite with assurances.
    Again, looks and sounds GREAT! Keep up the good work and keep the videos coming :-)

    • @StevenParente
      @StevenParente  3 роки тому

      Thanks Dave. It's what I love to do! If you were planning on not having a pick guard, which would look very cool, the slight over routing could definitely be a problem. My main concern with any guitar is the neck. If the neck is good, the guitar can be really nice. Components are important as well and the Wilkinson Pickups are outstanding. I was blown away and so was Spencer. He told me he started taking in Fender Telecasters because of my build. And he has a few now and records certain types of tracks with them. He's mainly a Strat guy, but finds the Tele's cut through he mix. I like the pick guard on a telecaster for contrast, so it wasn't an issue for me. In fact, I've been getting into leather work and have been thinking about a leather pick guard. Check this link out. facebook.com/photo?fbid=10222006857218986&set=a.2293214128302 Troy West is an amazing leather craftsman and although he went WAY beyond the pick guard, I think I could carve a nice leather pick guard. Thanks for watching and be sure to send me updates on your builds! There's a good Facebook called "Partscaster Guitars and Kits". which you might enjoy.

      @@StevenParente Thanks for the feedback Steve :-) ....I certainly would expect teenie-but-fixable flaws in the basic kit, the Wilk is $700 after taxes here in Canada, so flaws are disappointing. the temptation to opt for a solid used Tele and strip/refinish and pimp it may be a better option...OR, win the lottery and buy a C&C machine and lathe...already have the router lol.

    • @StevenParente
      @StevenParente  3 роки тому

      @@davej3736 Yes! A C&C machine would be really nice. There's a local company, one man shop, making custom guitars using local woods. He has a C&C. They turn out beautiful, but Jeremiah still puts in a lot of work. I'm saving up for one of his. Check out TigerLuv guitars. tigerluv.com

      Aloha Mark. Yeah, those little screws are touchy and it's hard to find small screws and springs for guitars at your local hardware store. Sometimes your local luthier/guitar shop will help.
