    Man I love that guitar!
I have some 6ft x 2ft x 1in slabs of West Australian Jarrah (dense hard wood) that were cut, quarter sawn from a monster tree knocked down by a Cyclone back in the late 70's. Reckon it'nicely dried by now ;) It Was around 5-6ft diameter at the ground at least.
Always wanted to use it for a guitar but it's so heavy.
I love the Explorer shape and this could solve the weight issue really nicely.
Thanks for the inspiration, hope you don't mind if I pinch your concept ;)
If I ever do anything serious with the idea I'll brand an "Inspired by BigD" marker on it.

What is the reason for using the thick strips between the top and back of the guitar? Is it just to keep weight down? Or is there some other reason. I would imagine a solid piece of wood would (hehe) be pretty heavy.
