I always say, if you can't afford to #playauthentic, then build it yourself! Nice job.
And Texas Toast says "If you're so smart, you build it yourself". You're both right! :-) (I'm probably paraphrasing)
There is no better feeling in a world than looking at a project and saying, "I made this."
That’s came out awesome. I love how the natural color and wood grain pops. Also appreciate that you used wood instead of plastic for the back panel.
Inspiring! More satisfaction comes from making your own guitar than just buying something off the shelf!
I've got a nice piece of flamed mango for a couple necks. It is a very nice wood, somewhat affordable and easy to find figured. It is sustainable too.
One of the Japanese companies that produce Les Paul copies, could be Tokai, Burny, or Edwards, I can't remember, produce a mango topped guitar. It is beautiful.
Q: What did the guitar Luther say to the wood working supplier?
A: I'm seeing a pattern here.
Great video!
So you can see into the chambered areas from the head and tail area? That's wild!
Beautiful work Big D! Thank you!
Freaking Masterpiece!!! Just Beautiful!!! SKILLZ
I only had a one-word reaction to all the work that went into that: Jeezus!
Cool ! Awesome idea the weight releave is done. Looks great.
Sooo beautiful!
Wow that is a beauty.
Wow incredible!
This time I will use woodprix to make it.
Sweet! A quality build isn't easy..
Nice I'd love to build my own Explorer the way I'd want it I miss my 1998 Gothic series!
It must be wonderful to have the skill and experience and workshop to be able to make these fabulous bespoke instruments.
I would love to be able to do the same, fantastic!
Thanks for posting.
That guitar looks gorgeous! great video!
Giving you the love buddy!
Turned out really nice, Pam
Great stuff!
Nice work. Good looking wood.
Very nice build! Thanks for sharing your craftsmanship!
Very impressive. A great deal of knowledge and talent involved in this project. Came out beautiful.
That is absolutely beautiful! Wow, I love the look of the wood and the fretboard. Just gorgeous! Great work!!!
Very nice.
Beautiful Job
Id like to see your method of finding correct neck body joint angles using various bridges
Nice!😊
Excellent work Derek!
Incredible build!
Thats a beauty right there!🤘
That was supposed to be my coffin. Give it back.
Stunning! I wanna do what you do!
Nice
Pretty sweet looking guitar and workmanship, a couple of things you did puzzled me, so it would have been cool to have a voice over explanation, but I can pretty much piece it together. Nice playing too!
I have longer full vids with the voice over in the description. ua-cam.com/play/PLvHM0_cyyFLwoRUQooi9x7s3Jh44Ns3nz.html
Nice job!
Sweet!!! Nice work! :-)
BigDGuitars , WOW That's One Beautiful Guitar How Can I Get Me One Built " . 👍🤟🎸 Thanks TroyFrost / Troyster 😎 CoolRiffs 😎 Cool 🎸 🤘🤘 🤘
If you learn nothing else from UA-camrs building guitars, always remember.... you can NEVER have enough clamps.... clamps for days.
I'd like to try the guitar
Man I love that guitar!
I have some 6ft x 2ft x 1in slabs of West Australian Jarrah (dense hard wood) that were cut, quarter sawn from a monster tree knocked down by a Cyclone back in the late 70's. Reckon it'nicely dried by now ;) It Was around 5-6ft diameter at the ground at least.
Always wanted to use it for a guitar but it's so heavy.
I love the Explorer shape and this could solve the weight issue really nicely.
Thanks for the inspiration, hope you don't mind if I pinch your concept ;)
If I ever do anything serious with the idea I'll brand an "Inspired by BigD" marker on it.
All the best.
@@bigdguitars just trying to work out how I can carve the struts to go from around 50mm centre to round 20mm at the extreme edges () all the way through so curved back and top but not compound curve.
Interesting challenge.
Cheers mate.
Boiler Up! I like the hat! You in Indiana?
I watched the series - this is a nice summation. Damn what a beauty - and your construction method is so cool. Now that you've had it for a few months, how does it sound? Is it what you hoped it would be? Cheers!
Big D: nice build dude!!! Coupla comments..... the music is really good...
I got that same HD ridgid spindle sander, don't like it...at all
I still scared of my router table... do things with the handheld or the cnc...
beautiful piece man...how many hours do you think??
Really sweet! Would surely liked to have also seen neck/body alignment, bridge adjustment and setup on this. Not sure why you chose to leave it out of the video?
I don't setup guitars till after a month of them understring pressure. This guitar I was worried about.
This is a beautiful guitar and looks well made but allow me to ask you how this isn't a violation of Gibson's trademarks 2053805 and or 1567052 if and or when you offer it for sale? Just curious and playing devil's advocate as I'd like to have a custom 7 string Iceman shaped guitar built.
The more I see you use tru oil the more I want to put it on a guitar ;-)
Awesome! When you route the angled neck pocket do you have to plane the top of the guitar to the same angle so the fingerboard is flush to the body when gluing?
go to 10:12 in the video you can see how I made the jig. I also routed the top at the same angle so its flat.
@@bigdguitars wow that went so fast almost missed it. Thanks for the help, I'm making an explorer right now and your videos are always so inspiring!
I know you probably get way too many comments to be able to read them all. But I will try anyway. What size of round over bit did you use to carve the back of the neck
i thought at the end part of the reveal would be the riff being played was recorded on that build..
looks Killer! what's the price on something like this?
What is the reason for using the thick strips between the top and back of the guitar? Is it just to keep weight down? Or is there some other reason. I would imagine a solid piece of wood would (hehe) be pretty heavy.
beautiful explorer, but something is missing ....
JAMES HETFIELD WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU BUILDING AN EXPLORER GUITAR....
How long does it take you
Where can I have the plan ?
For Sale?
Where do you get the template/cut out things from? Also is that Justin Johnson I hear?
Had it been a solid body i would have ask how much something like that would have cost me...
I didn't have enough wood for a solid body and I didn't want to pancake up a body
@@bigdguitars Tone Vents!
Damn D that is spectacular. Good on you for being able to use the coconut / palm wood for a fret board. I have some eating ware made out of that stuff I got when I was in Asia. I would not want to work with that stuff, but really gorgeous and completely different from anything else.
@@bigdguitars
Still look great dude...
That mango wood has king of instired me on how a guitar would sould with a mahogany back and mango top and rock maple neck...
Really think that the mango looks great...
You rock dude. \m/
Keep the videos comming... Really inspirering work ;)
@@jeffallen3382
I'm getting inspiret to try and make something out of mango my self xD
Just a heads up, youtube is awful with the content id and some music conglomerate may strike down your video even for that short riff at the end.
I remember this from before. what ever happen to it ?
the vidoe's fell flat for some reason. the build go zero attention. I don't know why.
@@bigdguitars that is VERY strange as i figured it would sell / draw more attention !!
How much for that one?
pickes up an explorers. plays metallica it’s what you do
w
My eyes hurt from trying to follow all this information with the speed the video was going.
I have a 5 part series of this in the description where I have the video's slowed down.
@@bigdguitars So the deja vu was real! I already seen it but im gonna check it out again anyway. You make great video's man! (if its not in super speed haha)
Глаза устали. Все рябит((
The music got so monotonous I had to turn it off. The sound of the machines would have been so much better.
Gibson's gonna sue ya!
Weight releived explorer? Noooooooooooo
Very nice guitar and superb craftsmanship! What product did you use to seal the wood?
Please never play Enter Sandman on a neck pickup ever again.
Sweet guitar. Really nice job
