My favorite thing about the game is Jimmy himself, he's willing to stand up for the little guys but is still not beyond being an ass sometimes. I also love how straightforward he is about kicking everyone's ass. Any faction: "What're you gonna do, fight me?" Jimmy: "Yes"
The thing about Bully is that everyone was a bully in Bullworth: jocks, nerds, posh kids, teachers, adults, everyone was bullying each other throughout the whole game.
@@OakkarMg210 What I meant is that the media made is look like YOU are the bully, in the game, which is quite the opposite. Jimmy is just a kid getting by.
A fact that I know is he didn’t do the mocap because there was a different actor before him. His voice can still be heard slightly if you look harder into the audio files
Do you think adults have the time spare to play every game their kids own? They have to make decisions about their kids education with the minimal information possible (what's shown) and still get it right.
Yeah ok dude lets not pretend like the parents are just dumb, ignorant and wrong in this case. The game has you complete tons of quests where the sole mission is to bully nerds lmfao.
I love the portrayal of our main protagonist in this game. Jimmy despite being smaller than any other bullies, he still has balls to stand up for himself and protect the weak as potrayed in the storyline. He's the kind of character that you don't want to get on his bad side. He's a sarcastic jerk but he is not picking the other kids. It's one of the interesting characters out of any rockstar games.
Kinda like a honey badger. Not even lions will fuck with them cause, even if the lion would win, there's a good chance the diminutive honey badger will rip its face off before it goes down.
Oddly enough, the bullies faction, even by being the first group to be Jimmy's antagonists, stayed with him even when every other faction dissented him
It's so crazy. Despite the utter cynicism of the Bully universe, it's a surprisingly optimistic story of an ultimately good (if anti-heroic) guy triumphing over a status quo built on preying on the weak and defenseless.
Only just got it recently, when I showed it to some of my friends, they wanted nothing to do with this game and took it way too seriously, been a victim of bullies myself when I was still in high school, but I love this game so far, lots of fun, now adult I just seeing this game as just a game among others, I'm just laughing it out when I play it, don't need to take it seriously gheez... Some people just take everything all too seriously nowadays...
I'm pretty sure having sexy times in the car which is censored is more controversial than knocking their heads off mortal combat style, the collective adult mind is an asylum and makes no sense
Yeah, I would expect from a title called “Bully,” the primary objective was to be the worst bully you could be and thus deserving a censored name because kids would pick up that behavior, but it seems only half this game really involves you being a bully. If anything, you’re *fighting* other bullies and aren’t forced to become one.
There is something special about this game that I can't describe, it's not flashy or have a mind blowing story or gameplay, but it will always have a special place in my heart
@@vodkawhisperer3923 maybe but not necessarily. It's also just a really good game, back when Rockstar actually did effort on their games and there was no online multiplayer to milk people out of their money like GTA5 nowadays
Being the person in a position of power but bringing balance to an unkept and abusive school social environment through uniting the school body over time through earning their respect with the chaotic and controllable freedom of an ideal movie school environment. All the bs, development, systems you can understand, and an open world that feels encouraging for the player to want to explore. Plus playing a game from the ideal protagonist understanding the world around you alongside the player you can really understand the characters and their motivations no matter how random or not thought out they are. It's charmingly simple yet interesting for the average kid in school within a fleshed out imperfect school environment.
If anything, it seems like Bully actually delves more into the psychology of bullying, showing the environmental, familial, social, personal, and many other reasons everyone in the game bullies everyone else.
as if angry moms would ever care about any of that, they see superficial violence they blame video games. This sort of mob mentality of cancelling things from their superficial appearance is at this point expected

I also love the detail of the final mission where you have to take down the leaders again, and how every leader is in their arch nemesis' building. Like you said, the nerds were at the gym because that's where the jocks were hanging out. The jocks were at the library because that's where the nerds were hanging out. The greasers were in the girls dorm because..Well they had some girl problems in the past. And the preps are in their own luxury house because they honestly only care about themselves and it shows how they think so highly of themselves compared to the other students.
I didn't even know this game was considered controversial. Though the game is called Bully, it discourages bullying. People can can be so ignorant sometimes. It's especially ridiculous that they bullied Rockstar to try to get rid of it without even knowing what it was. What a sad bunch of hypocrites.
One idiot went on live television and got mad at it, then later in an interview literally admitted that they knew nothing about it, they were just told that it's a game called bully about bullying people.
This game is iconic man. The music, the characters, comedy , all hit. Such unique missions and it really put me in the world for the time I played. Definitely a big part of my childhood now
This game ironically had a rather realistic depiction of a strict school. Not all bullies have sh-tty background like Jimmy, some people are just a-holes, and most of the time, you have to actually fight back, either physically or emotionally. Some teachers/director, are either oblivious or straight join to the bullying. I think that's why old people got mad about it, because a lot of people have mix memories of their times in school/high school/college/university, either exaggerating the bad or the good times they had. I also love Jimmy, he aint the typical hero trying to make everyone friends, who doesn't even says bad words, Jimmy will defend you, then flick your forehead at the same time. It makes him more human, when he finally gets to power, it goes over his head. I'm a bit sad that Rockstar doesnt make their games as interactive as they are. In a way, Bully reminds me of Mount and Blade, on how alive the world is.
1:04:29 Thats actually a theory in the community. I know 90% of media has a "it was a dream" theory but in Bully's case, after surviving an impossible drop, everything goes perfect for jimmy, the game kinda loses cohesion and everything feels strange, and you start the last chapter: an "endless summer", where time wont pass, no one ages, and everything stays the same forever
It’s just got such a character… from the way Jimmy runs, to the map/clock, the buildings… the way the staff and teachers talk to people, it’s all just so connected to itself. I completed it again a few months back for the first time in 10+ years, I’d highly recommend it to anyone!
I love how cynical and unforgiving _Bully_ is towards parodying the American education system. I thinks that's the main reason many parents got subconsciously pissed at the game, because it highlighted their lackings when it came to raising their kids. This is an excellent game, wish Rockstar had stayed in that path instead of becoming money-hungry with the success of the GTA multiplayer.
Bully in the cover name is just a perfect disguise. You're actually changing the school of chaos to proper order with no bullying! Good to see you actually making a video of this game!
Yeah. People are stupid. There has been other titles that represent what the good guys want to stop. For example, The Lord of The Rings. It's the title, and the antagonist (Sauron).
@@matthewlambert7501 yes, but mostly he's against it if they don't deserve it. he doesn't bully random people unless you make him do it, he is just a video game protagonist after all.
"Russell can comprehend prison??" is honestly one of my favorite lines. The delivery & timing of it all. I played this game long before i knew anything about Rockstar or GTA, i just remembered enjoying the story & mechanics so much. I think i spent way too long with the side quests & yeah the ending seemed hella rushed for a game so robust but oh well, glad Jimmy & Pete got their happy ending so its fine :)
This game came out at a time when I was in school in a rough area and of course, was bullied. It was a great way to let off steam through relevant events and brought a lot of comfort after a shitty day.
@@skyral4137 What do you mean “bruh”? He or she said something very valid. This game came out at a time where I was made fun of at school too. I was an awkward, skinny and tall black girl just trying to get through school. I loved playing this game.
I still believe that jimmy being in a skeleton outfit, in that exact style, is a direct reference to johnny lawrence in the original karate kid. A movie widely known for its portrayal of “fighting back against the bully”. I like to think that this is almost even foreshadowing Gary’s betrayal, he told jimmy to wear this costume and johnny lawrence is portrayed as evil in the og kkid movies, he’s the bully, but aftee halloween, shit hits the fan, hence the betrayal. Cool little reference in my mind, even if it isn’t really.
Man this game ended up being the complete opposite of what I thought it was when I would see the game cover as a kid. I was thought you woulf go around stealing people's girlfriend's and robbing them while beating up teachers or something; turns out, its insanely well written, has surprisingly good dialogue, and even has a decent message. The fact that anyone could be mad about this is really puzzling, especially considering how many "normal" people i know who liked to casually hop on gta4 and gun down droves of civilians while avoiding the cops (shrug)
This is exactly why this game had so much controversy around it and was even banned in some countries. Because people who haven't played it thought that the game was about bullying others for fun. If every Karen who complained about the game actually sat down and completed the story, most would realise the game is actually anti-bullying.
@@BL00DYME55 Reviewing before playing or watching a media source materialis a negative aspect of reviewing, as it prevents you from getting the context you NEED to understand the source material's message.
@@BL00DYME55 Not like this same sort of thing didn't happen before. Go look at the laughable ideas and controversy around "Night Trap" in 1993. Though, please mind, it *WAS* in 1993. Many adults didn't play video games then, the industry was still very young. I'll give those in 1993 somewhat more of a pass, but not a huge one for lack of thorough investigation.
17:23 Sadly that’s not the case, if you take too long without sleeping Jimmy will actually pass out from exhaustion. If that happens you could get robbed in your sleep…every single time this happened to me my shoes were stolen. They nabbed my Yeezys in my sleep.
19:32 - Fun fact: if you keep grabbing Russell every few seconds, even though he’ll push you away, it resets the charge timer. You can go the whole fight without having him charge at you this way.
What I love about the game, especially the final fight despite being kinda easy, is how Gary and Jimmy contrast each other. Jimmy on the outside looks and acts lile a typical ,well, bully. But he's actively against it, never picks on the smaller kids and is trying his best to bring some order to the school even if his methods are questionable. Whereas Gary is the *REAL* namesake of the game, despite *looking* like a prim and proper student for the most part. He's the worst kind of bully, in fact. The kind that manipulates and has others do his dirty work *for him* while he seems innocent by comparison, all the while pitting people against each other for the kicks. Even his motives are born out of pure narcissism and a need to prove he's smarter than everyone. And *that* was ultimately his downfall. Unlike Jimmy who ,over the course of the game ,becomes tough as nails to keep the school from falling apart, Gary never changed, never improved. He just laughed at how much chaos he was causing from the shadows, until Jimmy brought him out into the light and exposed him for the sociopath he actually is.
The nice thing about the fight with Gary, in my opinion, was the fact that it was easy. Most of the fights Gary running off like.a coward until you confront him, and just get a chance to kick his smug little ass.
Gary = Israel, the Colonial Project & Apartheid Regime that also serves to wreak havoc in West Asia. (look up Lavon-Affair or USS Liberty lol) A near perfect description.
Incredible protagonist, beautiful OST, a cynical and mysterious story, a good sized map filled with loads of Easter eggs and activities, tons of side missions, lots of achievements, 3-4 different houses to live in, and so much more is why this game is such an underrated gem. Played it for so long ever since I bought it when I was 10, still own it on PC and Xbox 360, I'll never stop playing.
When I was in middle school for two years, I was bullied for those two years straight. It was awful, while it never got physical until it stopped in high school, but while I was trying to report the bullies to the counselors they would tell me that they will do something to stop it. Yet they never done a thing. For over two years, me and my mom struggled with the school system since those years and nothing came to action. When I entered into high school, nearly half of my classes were occupied with the worst one. It wasn’t until in the middle of the first semester, I got my self into a fight with the bully who tormented me since middle school. Even though I got myself a three day suspension, a cracked nose, and was grounded by my mom for the fight, the school listen what we said and were separated from him to opposite sides of the school. Ever since then, I couldn’t care less what any school official would say whenever they wanted to meet with me due to having an IEP and would often wouldn’t see them at all. I remember talking to my aunt about when she said when her son was bullied both ms and hs and how the school system did nothing and I told her about what happened to me and she wasn’t surprised about it for she worked within public schools. I helped my cousin where I can and I consider him a brother to me. Bully shows off the school system of what GTA shows off about society and I really enjoyed the game. And if I would give advise to anyone, never start a fight, but always finish the fight. Edit: didn’t expect to get this response over a bully video. Thanks a lot for you madlads for responding. Now that I have finished high school, I’m glad that I’m out of that hellscape. While starting adulthood has its own problems, at least I’m better off now than I was before.
i was once like you before, i had a bully who keeps harassing me during high school, told my teacher about it, nothing was done. i even escalated the matter to the principal, and guess what, the bully still gets to attend class as normal so that he can keep harassing me more. one day when i was ready to head down to the cafeteria for break time, my bully came out to confront me. the both of us spewing insults at each other before he started to attack me. however, i managed to gained the upper hand and threw him down on the floor. i then proceeded to beat the hell outta him until he told me to stop, but i kept going. eventually i got caught and was immediately sent to the principal's office. the principal told me that expelling me was the only right thing she could do. i rebutted her statement with this: "if you guys aren't willing to do anything about it, then i have no choice but to take matters into my own hands. i have reported this case of bullying many times and nothing was done about it. you are giving me the impression that bullying is okay but standing up to them isn't. if you were to be me in this case, what would you do?" and that is the time i told myself that i should not rely on others to fight my battles, rather that i learn to stand up for myself. and no, i do not condone violence against bullies, but if no one is willing to help you, then it is up to you to decide whether you want to let it slide or end it here and now.
@@Aceriex Damn, I'm sorry it ended up being like that, did you end up getting expelled? I remember something similar happened to me but I just ended up ignoring it my entire life until I eventually finished highschool, I didn't really get into fights because the people who bullied me only had throat and nothing else, so I eventually let it slide. Although when I was a kid, there was this bully who punched and beat one of my friends, I tried to get him off of him but ended up getting punched myself, so, much like you, I ended up beating the shit out of him until I broke his nose and almost asphyxiated him. I believe in general, unless it's an extremely strict school, and even then, the educational system just doesn't care about bullies. And when people who finally defend themselves against bullies end up always being the ones getting caught. Adult life might not be a piece of cake, but honestly, it's light years better than teen/early adult life.
The fact we never got a sequel to this masterpiece with a new story is a crime. This game was incredible, and is still great to this day. I wouldn’t have minded the ability to have more boxing challenges though
@@Mentelgen-1337 I vaguely remember hearing of a sequel that was in the works. I didn't think of it much, and the last I thought of it might have been in 2008... Good grief...

It doesn't ruin his character wither as hes still pretty much just spoiling the shit oht of one specific kid again, but at least someone who looks out for the little guys this time lmao. Great way to end all the bs that school put jimmy through lol
I just wish Rockstar would’ve inserted Gary more in the story than just the beginning and End. I want to see Gary backstabbing me, not hear about it from characters after i just got their trust doing missions. But i get it, Gary being the master manipulator pulling the strings was the twist in the end
PLus it speaks to what a coward Gary ultiamtely is. He's so scared of you he refuses to face you until he has no other options, which is ultimately what ends him, as he feared.
a lot of people complained about his boss fight being too easy but I think that was the whole point. Gary fought with his brains and wit, muscle wasn't his strong suit. Sure he could fuck you up when he kept himself out of reach (he did it for almost the entire story and even the first half of his boss fight), but the moment you get into a one on one fist fight with him he goes down easy because Jimmy was flat out stronger and a better fighter.
Something bully nails is simply its identity. There's no question about Bully's identity as a game. The music score always fits the situation quite well if it be the various clique fighting themes, or the various mission themes. The world while nothing groundbreaking when compared to other rockstar titles, is crammed full of a certain character that you can't overlook. Each part of Bullworth feels like something you can find in small north-eastern coast towns. (Since this game for some reason really screams.. Conneticut or Massachusettes for some reason. Maybe its what the developers were going for, maybe not. Regardless it screams that New England type look)
oh they definitely were going for that. Not to mention they aimed to make the game feel sort of 'timeless' to a degree; yeah certain aspects of it could become outdated but at the same time it had this sort of feel and tone that never really goes out of style, it always feels welcome and familiar no matter what. Kinda like beloved 80s teen flicks like the Breakfast Club or Ferris Buller's Day Off.
I just want to point out, after unfortunately much real-life experience with a couple people with personalities exactly like Gary, his behavior here is not delusion; he's not insane (at least in the way you mean) and he didn't start rumors about himself. It's that he honestly thinks everyone, you included, really actually are secretly plotting against him. He assumes you've been spreading rumors about him automatically. No evidence needed. Why? Because it's what he would do! It's hardcoded human nature to believe that most people are like oneself, and since he's a lying, manipulative, entitled asshole plotting and backstabbing, he honestly thinks everyone else is the same way. In his mind he's just protecting himself and giving others what they deserve. In people with these types of narcissistic, borderline sociopathic personality disorders, these tendencies of assuming shared behavior and motivations eg; that the world is out to get him, are often exaggerated in their natures to the point of paranoia. Whether by luck or by actual research, R* did a good job portraying this. Granted it's an over the top performance because it's a non-serious videogame, but still.
@@cjeromet1971 Though Stalin (and most dictators) do have similar personality traits, the purges were mainly to justify the continued existence of the State and it's brutal methods and laws. With those systems of government, there always has to be some enemy; some threat big and continuous enough to require the police state. Without that, the people might start thinking that maybe we didn't need the constant surveillance, spying, oppressive laws, and massive State bureaucracy... Sadly even our Western "free", "democratic" governments still engage in minor, less obvious versions of this behavior today. You can see it in the constant drafting of new laws, prisons packed with minor drug offenders and other 'victimless crimes', and the perpetual justification of terrorists every time the state wants to take more of your freedoms and rights away, or engage in more spying, or whatever else. Stalin's purges were just this methodology taken to the extreme -- but any government of sufficient size (and the inevitable corruption) after a while exists only to perpetuate itself and gain power, and do so there must always be enemies to justify things, real or invented. Lol sorry I didn't intend to write a thesis on this. Anyway to tie it all together, it should thus also come as no surprise that folks of similar personality to Gary often gravitate toward positions of power and authority: government, police, you name it. Most well-adjusted decent people see government, police, and use-of-force as necessary evils and methods of last resort, respectively. They participate in them because someone must, but only to the minimum necessary. The Garys of the world however see them as handy excuses to bully others and power trip. Cops do it openly and directly, politicians hide behind a facade of words and public image, while delegating the backstabbing to someone else, but the same psychological forces are at play. And that's why policing and politics are in the state they're in, because such are the majority of people in those professions. And now that I've bored the hell out of everyone, I'll shut up.
Fun fact: in the fight with Edgar, if you lose , there was a cutscene where Jimmy drown in the acid while Edgar laugh and insult him . Obviously , the developers cut It cuz It was creepy for a game like this
Man, they nailed the family/child dynamic. My mother is basically a carbon copy of Jimmy’s mum. I also became an abhorrent little asshole to literally everyone, for the longest time, because of it.

I think its stupid that the teachers get mad at you for wearing something like a leather jacket yet the greasers are allowed to wear leather and Jean jackets and the teachers just let them go.
Ironically I feel it’s kinda more realistic. I didn’t go to a fancy pants boarding school but I did go to a relatively reputable uniform school. The rules were hella biased and most often some kids could wear literally whatever they wanted and never get in trouble while other kids would get a shitshow thrown at them by the adults for not having the school’s emblem patch sewn onto the uniform pants. It all depended on your reputation and status, both in school and outside school (aka how much money your parents had)

I loved this game as a teen. I thought it had you play as a bully initially too (which I guess is partially true) but it really was the opposite. And had such a tight, fleshed out world for the time that still runs circles around some modern AAA titles. Still waiting on a Bully 2 FeelsStrongMan.jpg
Something I do want to say, while the teachers don't like their jobs or care about the students, I don't think the same holds for Crabapple. He's incredibly inept, gullible, short-tempered, and stubborn, but I think he does genuinely care about the kids he's charged with educating and keeping safe. He's just very bad at it.

bully sequel cancelled. because rockstar couldnt figure out how to implement online multiplay and endless microtransactions. the company is all about that today, not about making games.
the only micro transactions in rockstars games recently have been buying mf shark cards, which is literally just a waste considering grinding heists you can make a load of money quick anyways. i don’t see how you consider that “endless micro transactions”. this isn’t fortnite pal.

I only have one major complaint about this game, and it's the fact that, other than the nerds, none of the factions got fleshed out. I remember Algie, Earnest, Fatty, Beatrice... I remember close to nothing about the other factions. Hell, I'm not even sure which of the jocks was the faction leader!
Jocks IS the most bland faction. But other cliques had some fleshed out character, tbh. I can remember each cliques' bosses. Johnny, Greasers, obsessed with love and a bit not right in the head, paranoid. Derby, rich brat, striking platinum blonde, is in an incestous engagement with Pinky, his cousin, spoiled and manipulative, prideful. Several other members of cliques like Norton, Trent, Gordon, Kirby, etc, etc.
Jock was the most underdeloped faction which is a shame since its my favourite cliche. I honestly wouldn't have mind if they cut out the townie faction all together and instead used that chapter on jocks.
I like the theory that Jimmy died falling off the tower with Gary. Like you said, it's like he's dreaming, and then he enters the "Endless summer" which sounds like a name for the afterlife.
But its said in the intro jimmys going to be there atleast a year for his mom and new step dads cruise and you get a post card from them and hes dropped off not long before holloween which isnt super far from summer so jimmy just has several months of less stressful time before his parents come back but i do like the death theory because it a classic rockstar conspiracy
21:50 this is one of the main things fetch quests should be used for in my opinion. they can be disliked when they get overused but a fetch quest does just force you to explore specific areas in a quick way which doesn't dilute the memory of what you saw with other more prominent things like combat, which in my personal opinion can get tedious in this game
Such a gem of a game, they just don't make games like these anymore the attention to detail and content it had was mind boggling, this game will always remain dearly in my heart it also helps that i played the games while im a high schooler so the nostalgia just makes everything 10x better
This game is literally my happy place. I remember playing this game religiously on the ps2 sitting criss cross on the floor after school and struggling with certain parts because I was a stupid fucking kid but going back and playing it as an adult a few times over never gets old to me. The story, the game play, the open world concept and side missions. This game is a true cult classic. I would buy a sequel or a remake without even thinking twice.
53:50 I was about to disagree here but now that I think about it, I’m sure why that mission felt short is because I never really got caught doing that mission and when I did, I had the go kart unlocked which I used RELIGIOUSLY to move around. The trip back and forth felt so god damn fast lol
Honestly when i played this game the first time i couldn't believe the sheer amount of creativity went into creating it. This was Rockstar's peek, i mean you dont see really AAA games anymore having such an interesting theme, being so interactive and thought out. I actually liked this game more than any GTA game by the time, and i miss the kind of commitment R* had back in the days behind every project of theirs.
Always loved this game. Haven't played the scholarship edition, so I've never played the new classes, but goes down as one of my favorite games. Also, Gary's pills are real, but he just has ADHD. So no excuse for the psychopathy.
you're not missing too much; apart from some extra mini games the new classes are just fluff to pad the game out. The only useful one is geography which marks the locations of all the various collectibles on your map to help with treasure hunting; apart from that, all you get are weird outfits that make everyone laugh at you as you walk by and prevent you from kissing girls. Great for comedic purposes, sucky for everything else. The missions suffer the same problem to a lesser degree; the 'bad santa' arc is a lot of fun that definitely adds a bit of flair to the winter chapter (I mean you get to smash up Santa's workshop and beat the crap out of his elves in one mission, what's not to like?) but aside from that one high point the rest of the missions are rather boring and forgettable. The graphics upgrade is nice but personally I don't think it makes a HUGE difference, I'll let you decide on that one. Overall, I'd say Scholarship edition is okay. I mean it's still the masterpiece that is bully, plays way better than a certain remaster of another game that we are never to speak of (*cough* definitive trilogy *cough*); but there really isn't much difference between the original and scholarship edition at least not in any major capacity; the additions don't add much but they don't hurt the integrity of the game either. It all comes down to whether or not you think a little extra content is worth the price tag attached to the updated version of the game.

This is a very well done video but the whole thing about the jocks wanting to kick around the nerds got me thinking. Never before did a game that has stereotypes or any form of media that had stereotypes managed to entrain me so much The characters and gameplay are so enjoyable And the message of the game is something that is worth giving to a young child to play It might help them learn, it should help them learn
10 months later, yeah i think stereotypes are cool, as long as their used in a similar way to how they are in bully, just a simple shortcut to properly construct a characters personality instead of just making that stereotype the ENTIRE personality.
This was the most fun I've ever had in my miserable ass life. I don't imagine I'll ever buy another console unless they make a sequel to this, and you can't play it without it.
Yeah I wait at least 3 years after a new console comes out to buy one so I know what games are on it to see if it’s worth the money. I’ve only got a PS3, Xbox 360 and PS4. I’m going to waiting a year to buy a PS5 games aren’t what they used to be back in the golden years of gaming throughout 2001-2018
The Japanese version is only subbed not dubbed, I was greatly disappointed. Although the bullying situation in Japan plays out differently so this game wouldn't showcase that too well; in Japan it's more collectivistic in it's approach, and the problem continues even into adulthood more-so then how it here in the west.
I really liked the part where Pete said he felt really happy hanging out Jimmy and Gary. I guess that’s why the ending was very meh for me because we never saw any interaction with just the three of them
I love Bully, which is why its flaws are so upsetting to me, because I can feel how they prevent the game from being even better. My three big gripes with Bully are as follows: 1) The reputation system and the plot as a whole would’ve worked better in a less linear story. Every single npc is so lovingly crafted to be an individual, it’s a shame the linearity of the game ends up wasting their potential and turning them into set dressing, and you aren’t given more opportunity and agency to explore and build relationships with characters and cliques of your choosing. Furthermore, it would be fun to be able to fail or even sabotage quests without being forced to restart the mission, and have that sabotage or failure become a canon event in that playthrough (unless you reload). For instance, it’s actually possible in game to fail the mission The Candidate by shooting Earnest’s speakers, and I would’ve loved if I could’ve used that as a way to gain Jock respect and lose Nerd respect. More player choice would also help spice up the honestly slightly mediocre gameplay of fighting and fetch-quests. 2) Gary also felt like very wasted potential in the story. There exist trailers and unused cutscenes that imply he was originally meant to stay your friend for much more of the game rather than quickly betraying you at the end of chapter one, and I think that would’ve made his manipulation and betrayal hold much more weight. As it stands, in the final game, he’s kinda just spoken of in passing, another npc walking around campus, occasionally showing up in the background of cutscenes. He’s weirdly enigmatic, not in a cool way, but in a shallow and underdeveloped way: he magically convinces people to do his dirty work and believe his rumors, even though he’s written and acted to be a bad liar, and most everyone from Pinky to Algie knows he’s a sociopath not to be trusted. I also found that Peter Vack’s voice acting for Gary ranged from fucking perfect, like whenever he’s tormenting Petey, especially about the swim team, to slightly cringy and phoned in, like whenever he’s monologuing or when he does his deep and slow little chuckle. 3) I never liked the ending for how lucky and matter-of-fact it felt. Having Gary get in trouble because Crabblesnitch just so happened to hear his whole monologue made it feel extremely flimsy, fragile, and unearned. An easy fix would have been to have Jimmy or a friend have a powerful tape recorder in their pocket while chasing Gary to record his evil monologue to show to Crabblesnitch later, and it would thusly feel so much more rightful and rewarding when he gets punished. It’s also disappointing you never get to see the hurt on Gary’s face when he realizes he’s failed; it would have been so cathartic and so earned for us to finally see him feel the weight of his karma. A couple other things about the ending: - How the hell did Gary get all the cliques to riot and fight each other? And what did doing so accomplish for the story? - Why does Johnny go back to hating you like everyone else even after you just SAVED HIS ASS FROM A FUCKING ASYLUM? - Why is everyone cheering for Jimmy in the final cutscene? How did they suddenly start loving him again? Did they learn about Gary’s evil schemes? If so, how did they find out so fast? And then there’s the technical critiques: It’s a shame so many things like bike tricks and a second story for the boys’ dorm had to be cut due to budget restraints and deadlines. Funhouse Fun was originally meant to center around using the funhouse controls to torment the Jocks, the dialogue for which is actually left over in the game files, but aside from that one moment where you trigger the grim reaper statues to hit them, it ended up being another simple beat-’em-up and escort mission. Had Rockstar and the PS2 been able to pull it off, it would’ve been nice if Bullworth Academy had more student npcs, so they didn’t have to reuse the same ones all over the map. Also that mission where you take compromising photos of Mandy without question and then a couple missions later go around destroying the posters of those photos which makes her like you while hiding the fact that it was you who took the photos in the first place always felt really gross.
I love your approach to video essays. You go over the objectivity of a game while sprinkling in your own opinions or humor. Brilliant content. Makes me feel like I played the game
My favorite thing about the game is Jimmy himself, he's willing to stand up for the little guys but is still not beyond being an ass sometimes.
I also love how straightforward he is about kicking everyone's ass.

Why is this a less cosmically threatful version of Joker and Akechi from persona 5

While starting adulthood has its own problems, at least I’m better off now than I was before.
i was once like you before, i had a bully who keeps harassing me during high school, told my teacher about it, nothing was done. i even escalated the matter to the principal, and guess what, the bully still gets to attend class as normal so that he can keep harassing me more.
one day when i was ready to head down to the cafeteria for break time, my bully came out to confront me. the both of us spewing insults at each other before he started to attack me. however, i managed to gained the upper hand and threw him down on the floor. i then proceeded to beat the hell outta him until he told me to stop, but i kept going. eventually i got caught and was immediately sent to the principal's office.
the principal told me that expelling me was the only right thing she could do. i rebutted her statement with this: "if you guys aren't willing to do anything about it, then i have no choice but to take matters into my own hands. i have reported this case of bullying many times and nothing was done about it. you are giving me the impression that bullying is okay but standing up to them isn't. if you were to be me in this case, what would you do?"
and that is the time i told myself that i should not rely on others to fight my battles, rather that i learn to stand up for myself. and no, i do not condone violence against bullies, but if no one is willing to help you, then it is up to you to decide whether you want to let it slide or end it here and now.
I’m a boxer so they wouldn’t be able to take me down, especially wrestlers because I’m not stupid enough to let them get ahold of my legs or just me.
@@kenyalmb good for you Gordon.
Adult life might not be a piece of cake, but honestly, it's light years better than teen/early adult life.
i got lucky cos my parents begged the principal to give me another chance, and the principal reluctantly let me go with a warning.
The fact we never got a sequel to this masterpiece with a new story is a crime. This game was incredible, and is still great to this day. I wouldn’t have minded the ability to have more boxing challenges though

Sure he could fuck you up when he kept himself out of reach (he did it for almost the entire story and even the first half of his boss fight), but the moment you get into a one on one fist fight with him he goes down easy because Jimmy was flat out stronger and a better fighter.
i wouls have enjoyed that being added to the story. his background being elaborated on would have been interesting.
Yep that is how they operate anyways, behind the scenes... 😐
Kinda like beloved 80s teen flicks like the Breakfast Club or Ferris Buller's Day Off.
i feel like it reminds me a little of New Jersey, but I'm no expert
This game actually does take place in the New England region of the US. My guess would be West Haven.
But does it also for some reason really scream that New England type look for some reason?
I heard somewhere it's supposed to be New Hampshire
Love this comment!
“I'd rather betray the world than let the world betray me.”
its like stalin and his purges.
Wow yeah right ON!
Fun fact: in the fight with Edgar, if you lose , there was a cutscene where Jimmy drown in the acid while Edgar laugh and insult him . Obviously , the developers cut It cuz It was creepy for a game like this

@@dominicmarazita6058 This game is really supposed to be a combination of the past like 6 decades of American culture in one weird timeline.
My three big gripes with Bully are as follows:
1) The reputation system and the plot as a whole would’ve worked better in a less linear story.
A couple other things about the ending:
- How the hell did Gary get all the cliques to riot and fight each other?
