That's a great tip, Barry! Thanks for letting me know - I'll definitely try that. It sounds almost identical to a method you can do with Streptocarpus leaves. 😁
@@Grow_Up_Man55 I haven't heard of that one youre talking about before. But when I looked it up, another plant showed that was a candy cane oxalis and that made my day!!! Im a huge oxalis fan. The candy cane colors though, blow my mind!!! 🤯
Glad to be of help - however that may come about! With the Strep leaves you cut right along either side of the 'rib' down the centre, effectively cutting it out, then plant the remaining 2 halves of leaf. It works really well.
You know you can see how that particular method got on, as well as the results from the other methods, in this video: Begonia Propagation: 🎉 RESULTS! 🥳: ua-cam.com/video/TstC9ZBlRv8/v-deo.html

I have tried 'disc propagation'with rex begonia in the past. You may also know this method, in which dozens of pieces punched out from a single leaf by a cork borer are used for propagation. In my case I used a sharpened aluminium cap instead of a cork borer and sand instead of tissue paper for the media. Although impractical in some respects, such as too many plantlet, it is an enjoyable method for show.
That's a new one to me - fascinating to hear of different methods. They're a very accommodating group of plants. I'm now wondering what I'm going to do with all the young plants from the propagations I made in this video!🤣
Thanks Chad! I have to say though - since that video my sister overwatered it while I was away and it's never recovered since. Just sticks at present. I'm hoping it springs back to life once the temps go up but if not I'll need to get a replacement.
Good video Geoff! I have 2 begonia leaves going right now, one in water which I started on Feb. 27th that has some nice roots and one in potting mix using the cone method. Can't tell yet if that one took. The water method works great, I have a number of tradescantia zebrina cuttings that have rooted from that plant I bought a few weeks back. Looking forward to seeing the progress of your cuttings!
Thanks Tommy! I suppose one benefit of the water method is that it’s easier to see progress. I still haven’t got around to covering mine yet so I hope I’m not too late! If there’s a conspicuous absence of a part 2 video you’ll know they all died! 🤣
Hello, I've just found your channel and I'm absolutely going to binge watch them all! Do you have a video on what potting mix you make for your teadescantias at all?
Glad to hear it! I hope you find some value in them. As far as Tradescantia potting media - they're really not all that fussy. I just use peat-free multipurpose compost and perlite - 50/50. But you can use other mixes successfully too. The very best root growth I've ever experienced is with pure sphagnum moss. In this video I tested various media - you might find it useful: ua-cam.com/video/LfoiZOO460c/v-deo.html
Interested to see the results! I’ve tried propagating my cane begonias via cone and water methods and failed (rot). So, hopefully will pick up something I’m doing wrong.
Yeah me too. Very often it can just be a numbers game. People try one single method and fail, then conclude it never works with that method, when in reality it might have say, a 60% success rate. I'd love to test these methods 'in bulk' to find out the percentage success rates of each but alas I'd need many more plants - and perhaps a lab!🤣
Yeah I don't why people are so obsessed with water propagation 🤣 - perhaps because it's easy to do in the first instance? For me, I prefer to take out one of the steps and plant straight into media - otherwise you're simply adding another job to do.
Great video and I’m looking forward to seeing the updates. My luxurians is growing well after watching your video. But my water propagated cutting died when transferred into the soil. I hope you can do propagation video for luxurians too!
Thanks Gigi! Glad to hear your Beg. luxurians is doing well. That's always my issue with water propagated plants in that they can develop roots that prefer water! I would suggest perhaps an intermediate stage where you keep them in moss for a while before transferring to soil-based composts. Or just root them in compost in the first place!🤣
Thank you for all of this info, but it doesn’t really help if we cannot see the outcome of each. Which ones took? Which ones started rooting faster? Which ones did not do well?
It helps if you want to watch demos of the propagation methods! For the results - which I refer to in the video, in the pinned comment and in the description, you need to watch this: Begonia Propagation: 🎉 RESULTS! 🥳: ua-cam.com/video/TstC9ZBlRv8/v-deo.html
What ist that beautiful hanging plant next to your head at about 2:00? It looks 😍 gorgeous! Also I am trying to save my beautiful eyelash begonia with root rot by cutting it up. I hope it will work 😭
Providing you've got some healthy rhizome it should be fairly easy. The plant you're referring to I think is Tradescantia zebrina - here's how I made it:ua-cam.com/video/O2IwlfoatcY/v-deo.html
I did one similar to your water propagation. But I don’t like to propagate in water so I did it in soil. Much to my chagrin the plant started coming out of the top of the original leaf. Very top heavy! I would not do it this way again. I would try the leaf cutting method or something else. This is a begonia escargot.
Yeah Begonias do that with leaf cuttings - not so much with stem tip cuttings which would probably prevent that from happening. Will be interesting to see what happens with mine. I nearly bought escargot once but it's quite similar to some of the others I have.
Hi I’m writing from Singapore. I have been trying to propagate begonia Rex for 2 months thru stem cutting and leaf cutting as you demonstrated in the video. I plant the cut leaves into individual cups like you do and water them before placing them at a bright and airy corner of my car porch away from direct sun light. How after a few days the planted leaves turn black and wither. What can be the reason?
I still don't have my full results from the video, but on preliminary results I'd say the most successful are stem tip cuttings (6:45) or the leaf cutting method (5:50) for this type of Begonia.
The propagating I find easy, is the after propagating that seems to not work for me... the potting on. once potted on my indoor begonias seem to simply perish... 😪😭

Try covering them with something transparent to keep the humidity close to the leaves. I've found the wedge cuttings have a greater success rate.
