I stumbled upon this video in my endeavor to fix my Red Bull Rex Begonia. I recently bought her from a nursery but she has a bad mealy bug infestation. Ive tried just about everything to get rid of them, but the plant is so lucious with leaves, i cant get to all of them.
Today, im going to take cuttings and clean them off, then attempt every method i can find to prop these guys. Im going to try every method that you mentioned in this video, but im very excited to try this one. The cut vein method seems very hit or miss and so does the rolling method. I dont have any greenhouse climate areas in my house, so relying on humidity propagating wont work for me. BUT water props have been so successful. Ill come back with results in a few months 😊😊

@@paultheplantparent2702 23 hour update: I can already see little micro roots popping in from the cut point. When i was scavenging through the plant, i found a tiny little healthy baby that has really nice roots and 6 little leaves coming out. Im going to attempt a FULL water prop with this one. So excited for the results 😍.

3 week update: Roots are about an inch long now and some are getting that nice mature root coloration. No secondary roots yet so i will not be putting them in soil, but id say within the next 2 weeks I'll be moving them to soil. In reality, im just waiting for the root system to be as large as the foliage on the prop cuttings. Im a firm believer in waiting for a good root system because the second you get that sucker in soil, they shoot out new growth like crazy since they have a great foundation.
Crazy to think that 3 weeks ago, i was nervous to grow props from single leaf begonia cuttings and now im ordering whole packs of tissue cultures 😂😂😂 the plant world is truly amazing 💚

I've never had any luck propagating any plant. I'm now trying Rex begonia is I have them in tupperware with leaf cuttings pressed into soil with a small hole cut in the top. I have one with just the curled-up leaf and then one with the leaf and stem stuck in the soil. For some reason my cuttings never ever work no matter what I do. Ive tried roses, violets, and now the begonia but they always just seem to turn mushy and die on me. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong 😢

I had never tried sticking the leaf in water to propagate until I saw you video. I have done the canes though. What I’ve done in the past with Rex leaves is cut them up and stick them in soil, keep semi moist and lots of humidity. I also did rhizomes that way. I do have roots on the rex leaves I’ve started since watching your video! I’m really glad I saw your video because sticking the leaves in water is so much easier than the soil version! I have another question. Have you ever stuck leaves from a rhizomatous begonia in water to root or have you only stuck the rhizome in water? Wow , I had no idea this could be done so easily with Begonias so thank you! I love water propagating but for the oxygen I always drop a round air stone into the bottom to run an air pump with and it makes all those millions of tiny tiny bubbles like in a fish tank, giving the roots and the plant plenty of oxygen in the water and it also I think it helps boost and speed up the routing process as well. You might want to try that out just a thought. 😁
