● Description
Almost 1 year ago I started learning game development in Unity. That means I had to learn c#, how to make game assets, and a billion other things. I've made 5 games so far: a 2d hack and slash game, a voice-controlled platformer, a tower builder for androids, a 3d RPG gladiators game, and a 3d puzzle game. How did I do all of that? Well, youtube is full of great game dev videos, and... ok ok, it was brackeys.
● About
Digging deep, huh? I am an indie game developer and self-taught(don't know much) programmer and artist. I make videos about games I make in Unity's game engine, drawing game assets, and everything related to games in general. If you are an epic gamer yourself you should join my journey and be a part of it!

Check my new video where I made a Metroidvania using Microsoft Paint only ua-cam.com/video/Rz-Sk9gJmhg/v-deo.html ! It’s pretty EPIC.
It was long wait time
dog
Disappointed that you didn't use paint to write code.
I have zero experience in making games but can I join to help you develop one?

Gidezilla is C# better then C++
Quite a lot of progress for 1 year, congrats and keep learning!
Lol so surreal, you are one of the guys I was watching till 4 a.m when I was starting out. Thanks, and keep making them great videos!
Yeah, a Lot for one year.
u
Hey code monkey your great teacher
Yohh congrats he noticed you.
You might learned the coding and making of games but you already posessed great amounts of art skill which REALLY helps out ALOT
I wanted to say exactly that !!
It's like he already had like 45% of game development down.. Most people need to learn programming, working in the engine, 3D modeling or Pixel art, Animation and Sound design.
Being able to make game ready art is a HUGE head start compared to others.
@@Devonaxx
I thought so, too.
Overall i'm a beginner at game development, but i at least have a bit of coding experience.
Learning and working/coding in Unity is fun, but i always have in mind to learn pixel art, animation, sounds and get overwhelmed so quickly
that i get frustrated and my progress slows down extremely. I know there are lot of nice free assets out there for starters, but...
I guess, like so often in my life, i have to learn to take things step by step 😅
and he made 5/6 game in that timespam, while not having a single background in game development ,nah i ain't believing it
YES!@@deogracias3650
@@DevonaxxI started to learn about this world a few days ago I used to study economics now I decide to learn this and I’m pretty sure is going to take me a few years 😢
Great editing brother. Had my attention the entire time!
Glad you've enjoyed it! So nice to hear that the effort is not going unnoticed!
Exactly! I usually have trouble focusing but this guy kept me hooked! Great work, really.
this video is really good, editing, voice over, creativity everything in every sense
Th4nX
even your early games made more from boredom than interest are impressive... you learned so much game dev in a year, makes me feel more motivated to start in earnest.
Woah, truly got surprised to see this channel with 2.5k subs. The editing and content was spectacular! Earned a sub from me! Excited to see what other content you’ll be coming out with!
He got 2 K more subs in one week
Already 5k
16.9 and I'm still surprised it is that little.
20k
Remove the dot. That's how much he have now. Insane.
I'm most impressed by your animations honestly, very nice
I know right? I would not expect this kind of animation from a guy learning on his own wtf
That was some epic progress in a year! Looking forward to what you do next :)
Quitting and starting again is all part of the process. Fantastic progress and great quality video.
Excited for your new content and growth, wish you the best of luck in your career!
Happy to see the video blowup and more and more game dev related videos surfacing. Hell yeah keep this going, but dont grind yourself to death xD
I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL! This is one of few things I have notifications turned on for, getting excited over every upload. Please, never stop making content.
Dude! Super inspring to see this. I am much like you, I just picked up Unity for funsies and I wanted to learn more C# skills for my current job. I am not sure if this is a future hobby of mine but in the meantime while I am learning I will be enjoying your videos over the subject! Cheers!
So did u learn
Very fun video, your hard work and creativity is starting to pay off. Keep learning! Good job!
Such a well thought-out and edited video haha. Great stuff man.
As someone who is only a few months into learning game development this made me hopeful for my journey, but also triggered some anxiety with how much I have left to learn. Thanks for the video! Ever onwards we go!
Just remember you don't have to learn everything and certainly not right away. Unity has a lot of tools, doesn't mean to understand them all, only if you need them.
How is it going ? 😁
@Mateusz it's been going well! I ended up joining my first ever game jam with an artist friend and we made our very first short, horror, narrative driven game together through Unreal Engine 4. The amount of coding and engine use I had to learn in just over two weeks was a lot, but I feel richer in skills for it! Ever onward to the next project! 😁
@@KingCoreyBearAndd a year has gone , how is it going?
@kibe003 See my above reply, but as of late I have been focusing on other creative endeavors. Game dev is definitely something I will get back to though soon enough! 😁
I barely leave a comment, your narration is so smooth and fun to listen, really amazing. And I just begin learning game development, hoping to make another 'LoL' someday lol.
Your humor is epic. I got here randomly for the second, or third time and I am again completely hooked. That's how content should always be. Keep it up!
Amazing! You learnt a lot about game development in a year. Your resume would look so amazing!
I also started to learn unity 1 year ago with some courses, but I didn't achieve that kind of progress. I will be so happy to hear how u actually learned all those things.
This channel is a blessing for me, i also want to get into game development but i'm too scared to fail, also don't have much time because of school, but my dream is to make games. I already have concepts but don't know how to put them into reality. What this channel is saying for me is courage and that i could actually learn from experience instead of waiting.
Hay me too, may be we can discuss further?
lol you're going to fail over and over again so you should get over that fear. Failing is how you learn. You should pick a simple and easy project and try to complete it quickly. Learn from mistakes and pick a slightly more difficult one and keep repeating the process.
After completing many mini projects you will be able to then have a go at making one of the big game concepts you dreamed of initially.
@@chickenmadness1732 Such a simple and obvious plan... Really thank you, i will put into work, thanks a lot
Hey man! really cool thank you for showing us your journey. I'm almost in the same situation as you are right now, bored but not drunk and want to learn programming. Cool stuff, very inspiring!
Man, I couldn't believe this was all in the course of a year. Awesome progress!
This video was actually amazing! I was so engaged I literally couldn't click off. You definitely deserve to have more subscribers!
i watch ur vids @DevBanana
I started making game yday (second attempt here too, 1 year ago I tried and failed) and I'm so happy when I heard that what I'm going through is normal. Its really hard to stick to something nowadays and when you said something about making game simple so you don't quit I really felt that lmao.
Anyways good luck on making GTA 6 in 2023 mate!
Good luck on not quiting!
i am also really struggling to get back into developing games
Wellllll little update, I failed lol.
BUT! I started coding and found out about CS50 which is really great and I see myself coming back to Game Development with more experience in future!
Main reason for quitting in the first place would be that I felt like I was copy pasting everything and not having any clue what it means, instead of making things myself, now when I got more into coding I at least I understand what I'm doing, even if it's copy paste I understand it.
@@mrdurma9859 tip: after you finish a tutorial, try to replicate the game without the tutorial, and watch the tutorial for any parts you couldn't do, repeat this process until you can do all or most of the game without the tutorial
@@mrdurma9859
Sounds interesting and i just saw it's also free. Is it coding in general or a specific language?
And how long does it approximately take?
Excellent videos!! Somehow both inspiring and hilarious! Love your stuff can’t wait to see more!
You've developed a really strong skill set bro! Thanks for sharing your journey!
Man you are underrated you deserve more
dang, one of the most interesting game dev progress videos🔥
100% correct
Great progress! Fantastic video! Bravo!
Nice video, good luck with your adventure!

subbed. I got the people I'm subbed to set to private, so you'll have to believe me...
You already know how to :)
Deal, btw thanks for making the title accurate literally every other video is like 6:01. Anyways great video continue the great work
subbed, if my name isnt in your next game, I will be seeing my laywers.
I'm a computer science student and you just gave me enough motivation to code. Thanks bro.
awesome progress, keep it going bro
I'm glad i found this channel, entertaining and useful. Well done man! :D
I gotta say I loved the pixel art games the most😄!
I started making pixel art games because I loved your pixel art games.
Please keep making them😆👍they are amazing🔥🔥🔥
Same I was overwhelmed too until I saw brackeys channel! And I made my first game one week ago, ball runner, and learned everything from brackeys. I will start developing my next game. Brackeys has helped me alot’
i learned nothing from this video, but since i feel bored often quickly when playing games lately, u caught me with that and it inspired me a bit. i don't think i'll make any progress near that level but i want to realize 2 concepts i have for quite a while now. a card game and a tbs. if they ever turn to reality, consider yourself as a part of the responsible forces behind it. thanks. gl and cu.
Dude, respect you !!!
You motivate me, to continue to learn the programming, thanks for this.
One day, I hope, to achieve such a result as you, and maybe even more.
This was a really interesting video! I've been toying around with the idea of making my own game after seeing Toby Fox and Eric Barone do it on their own, but I've always feared the learning process when I probably should have been excited for it.
On a side note, are you Dutch or Belgian? A lot of my favourite content creators have a similar accent to yours and I've taken note of how many content creators there are from these countries.
Makes me wonder if certain culturally facilitated living standards leads to more content creators.
Thanks! No, I am from Baltics :)
@@Giedzilla what is you’re lol rank.
Great progress, congrats!
I'm learning Unity and C# for a while now, still beginner though, but i always slow down because i'm intimidated of what i still have and want to learn, from pixel art to animations to sound...
Sure, there are a lot of nice and free assets out there, but it was always my problem that i want all at once...which of course is impossible so i get frustrated and my progress slows down again...
Can you give us an update? I really want to know if you are still learning all the things and if so - how far you have come :)
@@L0v0lup
Sure i can, but sadly for a while now i couldn't do much because of personal problems like depression, anxiety etc. But i hope that someday this will be ok again and i can continue.
Loved swords and sandals as a kid! This video is very inspirational, very impressive progress!
Great video, mate. It also pretty much describes my situation. Some of my early Unity games suck and now I want to make another one again after watching this video, but sadly just don't have the time. Anw, I will wait for the Ms Paint-made video games.
I made one already! Check the channel :)
Really humorous and inspiring. Great stuff!
Glad you’ve enjoyed it!
closing the league client on repeat, relatable LMAO
Hell yeah man keep up these videos ,would love to see more
Omg your editing is hilarious 🤣 this is great and just subscribed! I plan to make a channel for my game dev journey too and this is so inspiring 🔥💕
0:37 all hail brackeys youtube channel
As a 15yr this inspired me to continue learning about game development thanks you random UA-cam person
You’re welcome random citizen!
What?! Amazing dude!! I would love a more in depth particle slash pixel art kind tutorial from you. Totally subscribing
Bro your editing style and script is awesome!
Dude...youre so fucking underrated..i hope you reach 10 M by the Next year! Keep the good job up
Haha, if I can still make good videos by then
so good!
Feel exactly like this
nice progress, thank you for sharing :)
I study coding for almost a year and i am pretty excited and curious about those 2D games, is actually coding a big part of making such games? or it is more like an addition in whole process? What would You say about that after year experience. Anyone can share opinion as well :D
Tol wla ako alam sa coding pero gusto ko maging programmer or developer, anong advice mo?

Bro, I am absolutely LOVING your humour in this video 😂 Great video and congrats!
Love this Video! It inspires me to start learning Game Development. I've been primarily into web development :)
The discord disconnect noise made my stomach drop in fear -_-
same
I always lacks in confidence of myself. I always wanted to make a game, something meaningful. And yet, I never brought myself to create a game, I fears that I don't have the skills to make one, I don't know how to draw, and barely passed my programming courses in University. After watching your video, I felt like I want to give it a try, despite it will mostly end up a utter trash. Thank you.
Bro, most games end up utter trash.
I remember i got HOOKED when i created my first AI in Unreal Engine. So i made a city with different AI's(People) doing different things, and reacting, attacking , cursing, shooting, fishing, driving, etc etc. So i totally grasped the idea of AI and know most of how it works. Put me into Textures, i've NO IDEA what's going on. Anyway, my point is, start from something, as this is a big road, and you will eventually start walking the road casually. Don't focus on 10 different things at once, and DO NOT get the idea that you can create an entire game, that takes way longer than you think.
Small steps till we get there bud. Best of luck
Thank you for the effort, you put in!
Wow this video is very inspiring, i also start from designing 3D outfits but my curiosity lead's me to test and expand my knowledge about game developing. Thank you so much 🧡
Him: *drawing epic pixel art and said I am bad at drawing*
Me: *crying*
I said I am NOT TERRIBLE at drawing, not that I am bad at it
Hilarious Video, great job!
Dude, this was a great vid. Loved the hack-and-slash first game! I'll send you mine when it's done :)
Hi! This was inspirational. I have a question. Could you comment about “how you approached learning?” Did you focus on code first? Do you recommend it? In my experience learning “how to learn” something is an overlooked skill. Looks like you nailed it. 😎
I love how he liked ur comment but completely ignored your questions 😂
Do you have a background in digital art? Because the visuals are very impressive if you just started.
I used to draw “a bit” as a kid
@@Giedzilla well thats still impressive. Good job
You are a real inspiration! thank you for making this
Really great video, enjoyed it a lot!
Ah yes. The beginnings of game dev is so fun. But when you're about to make a long term game, the work becomes very repetitive that you question yourself everyday why sre you still doing it.
Yep, that’s why some of quite simple games takes long to make - not interested in them anymore :(
Game development is a skill that you can learn within two months of starting the language. Using a GUI application to assist will increase that by at least triple and then (from my experience) creating assets will take months or years to learn.
Game Dev is easy, asset Dev is hard af
WOW, you are good, I was hooked the whole 6 min
nice work man
Gl in your games :3
and your life :D
I have a question, did you have any programming background when you started Unity? I'm a programmer student and It's one of my dreams to make an actual fun game, but somehow I still find it very difficult to not give up on learning game development
I did not. Started learning from zero xd
@@Giedzilla Wow! now I want to start learning game dev once again. Thank you and I'm definitely gonna binge watch your videos to fuel up my motivation xD
Still wating for the league of legends rip off so i can aswell reach that rank
this is very interesting nice work!!!
Very interesting video since I Just fell into this wormhole called Unity maybe a month ago and its really funny seeing we had the exact same approach and thought process about it starting out.
Im at the watch Tutorials and re-write whatever letters they type phase, without any idea of what Im actually doing. Which i guess is the most frustrating aspect of this learning process.
Its so much to learn with the coding bit if you never touched ANY programming what so ever, im basically hoping it will some day click fundamentally so i can see code and be able to identify what it all does. Be able to conceptualize it all. But fun stuff!
Jesus Saves, John 3:16 amen 🙏🏾
Amazing share here! Great progress indeed 👌 And great video too! 🙂
I've recently began my journey and you are a huge inspiration. I am also working on a laptop. I'm a big fan of pixel art however I could never figure it out, so I went the 3D route. Your versatility is amazing, I look forward to future videos.
Best of luck! Yeah I do a lot of things, but they are mediocre, it could be nice to have at least one skill I could do amazingly well xd
Nice Work Dude Keep it up Your Going to go far With
