For my first game, I tried to make a small RPG. I spent ages trying to figure out how to get my character to move properly, how to manage items, inventories and so on, only to realise that the project was a horrible idea. I wish I had started with the Unity learn projects. You get to make something super early on and it doesn't require you to be a programmer to make the games. Was fun seeing Jake get into making games. It feels like he enjoyed it too!
my first attempt was an open world VR RPG with motion gesture spells... i scrapped it after a week. my my third project was the first one that was actually manageable.
@@nikoheino3927 My first game was a Open World Multiplayer with Persistent Servers, Basebuilding, bigger inventory system than in many known games, modular weapons, vehicles etc. And what can i say im 1600 hours in, and im very happy. The only thing that sucks a bit is the constant rewrite but apart from that my game already grew massive. If theres enough dedication then you won't scrap it.
@@DarkSession6208 what engine are you using? if you use unreal engine 5, then hats off to you. while the engine is insanely capable, its a monstrous task to learn, so doing something so complex at the beginning is pretty much out of the question. also did you have ANY prior knowledge of programming, or 3d modeling, art, anything like that? as those skills are highly transferrable. but also, those systems arent THAT complex in the end, base building probably being the hardest depending on how much control you want to give the player. inventory is just a bunch of data being held or transferred. still thats an insane project, im glad youre doing well with it, but my point is that my idea was simply not possible, map size was 2000km2, high-poly, a ton of bosses, a ton of quests, player driven economy, and the type of gesture driven magic system wouldve required an insane level of programming/math knowledge. not just drawing gestures, but also triangulate positions where to fire it based off of many elements, such as headset orientation, controller positions and enemy positions, while accounting for the gesture they just did as it would mess with the controller positions. even after learning for well over 2000 hours, i couldnt even REMOTELY pull of even that gesture magic system. i also wanted fully drstructible (but regenerative terrain). and these dont even scratch the surface of the things i wanted to make in it. i wouldve burned out instantly if i continued. i do this 8+ hours everyday, so if im making 0 progress, it wouldnt be fun.
@@nikoheino3927 Im indeed using Unreal, when i began two years ago i was a hobbyist 3D Modeler / UI Designer / made multiple 5 star workshop mods with over 40k downloads each etc. But apart from that i had 0 coding knowledge. I can say with 100% confidence that the hardest part is AI and a client predicted server authoriative performance efficient inventory system. Mine is even user preferrable a 2D widget or a 3D widget in the world with a 3D Model behind it and all that stuff. If i say inventory system i dont mean the inventory when you open a button, i mean a inventory system that includes traders, persistent world storage, saving, group member access, interaction etc. because all that stuff is coupled to the inventory system. Its by far the largest part of my game, without the inventory all thats left in most games would be vehicles, shooting, basebuilding and AI. I probably worked 600h on it. Basebuilding on the other hand is super easy, even with clan member access to certain doors, to boxes, with snapping a pie building menu etc. Fully networked obviously. The rat tail behind it again is a inventory system because all your building blocks inherit from the inventory, all that crafting stuff etc. The basebuilding took me not even 2 weeks to fully implement and make it so modular that i just need to import a model and rest is data driven so i can create new things with a single click and assign how it should behave, if it can be destroy, if yes by who, etc. But all i can say is most stuff people teach in tutorials is utter bs, its 10000% teached wrong and won't work in a real multiplayer game. Best advise i can give is to never watch ANY youtube tutorial again and just use google or chatgpt. Let your brain work for you and not other people. Today i also did the mistake to look up a equipment tutorial because i forgot how i implemented drag and drop and how i was checking if something can go into a slot, so i thought i could scrap it and rewrite in a more efficent way. When i saw what people teach even my janked approach was 20x more efficient, easier to read than theirs, but im still not happy and want to get the last bit of performance, it all btw starts with people teaching to use wrong variables which are way too heavy in a networked environment, in other words they don't even know what they are doing. And i mean 20.000+ sub channels and also those with 100.000+... they all suck. The only good channels where there are technical engineers and experts behind are often under 10k subs and you never heard about them, but you spot them if you have such a specific problem that is deep into development that nobody else talks or teaches about it, thats when you know hes not a blender. Apart from that don't use GAS or Gas Companion that people praise all the time, its a trap for beginners and intermediates, people that think GAS is the best thing since sliced bread also don't know what they are talking about, you are better off making your own ability system, it has too many limitation for a real game, but most people that think its great are making a walking simulator and not a game, and yes the amount of those people is 90% of the community. For really heavy logic/math stuff i can only advise to use GOOD marketplace plugins. So for the stuff thats super complex to do, or just takes too much time to make from scratch. Better to use something that someone with 10 years of coding experience made over 2-9 months, than you trying to recreate it in 3 weeks, fail and waste 3 weeks. And even if you attempt it, well nice there goes multiple months for a half assed solution instead of using the good practice, efficient, industry standard solution provided by a expert for a bit of money. A example is : Dynamic Pie Menu Terminal Ballistics (god its so performance optimized) PRAS And that 140$ Vehicle plugin that i forgot the name, its fully networked and has a ton of exposed variables and code so you can build off it really easy. ALSV4 is also a idiotic beginner trap, theres too much people downloading and using stuff they don't need for their game, and even worse they don't understand how it works but think they can just tick a couple boxes and create new functions with it ... thats just never the case, you need to fully rework from the ground up or rip out features and add yours together.

Devices won't be able to support Mana Valley and porting it will require a lot of changes. Unfortunately as a solo dev it's too much work to tackle alone. If the game does well on PC porting to other platforms might become a possibility. In what way do you think mobile gaming is underrated?
